Calvary Chapel Surfing Association a ministry of Calvary chapel Pacific Coast NEWSLETTER SUMMER SURF SERIES June 2016 Jake FISHMAN takes two Divisions as Nick NEIGHBORS, Matthew BLACKBURN, Makayla MOSS and Todd ALDERSON also Take Firsts Goldenwest Street, H.B. CONTEST NOTES: Calvary Chapel Surfing Association opened its 32st year of competitive surfing with our postponed June 11th contest at Goldenwest Street, held a week later due to conditions. The week wait made it an excellent beginning to the summer season. BOYS DIVISION: In the Boys division, right from the start, Matthew Blackburn surfed and scored well in all his heats, including the final scoring a 7.1 on one of his waves and taking first with 35.4 points. Taking second with 26.5 was T.J. Blue - who took first and seconds in his other heats. Brayden Gratzer took third place with 24 points, who was a favorite going in with firsts in all of his other heats. Jace McNerney scored 16.6 and took fourth in the final. Equal fifths went to Nathan Bradbury and Sean Betts, while equal sevenths went to Gunner Gehl and Joey Proodian. JUNIORS DIVISION: This division is always known for some great competition, and today was no exception. Kicking off the summer season, Nick Neighbors had a perfect day, taking first in all of his heats and scoring 32.8 in the final to take first place. Also surfing very well was, Kyle Rumsey who earned second place with 30.7 points. In third place for the day was Jullian Williams, visiting from Hawaii, scored 29.3 points, and surfed well all day long. Fourth place went to Matthew Blackburn (who took first in Boys) scoring 28.2 points. Equal fifths went to Christian Alderson and Brayden Gratzer, while equal sevenths went to Ari Maranda and Jeffery Proodian. MENS DIVISION: It was a very competitive day as the men brought their “A” game. in the final it was just over two point that separated the leaders. Scoring 40.8 with one of those waves scoring a 8.5, Jake Fishman took first place. Randy Harp was just behind him with 38.7 points and took second place. Coming in third with 32.9 was Gavin Haughey, who took firsts in all of his previous heats of the day. Equal fifths went to Todd Alderson and Chris Harsh, while equal sevenths went to Kyle O’Bryan and Ian Tachell. WOMENS DIVISION: It was a good day for waves, but some of the heats had a lot to pick from as others had only a few. The surfers made the most of . them and scoring 20.7 in her heat was Makayla Moss. She surfed her first CCSA and it seems to fit her quite well. Taking second place with 15 points was Alicia Bond. who surf in our High School Team event this winter. Third place 8.3 was Serena Prince, who seemed to be looking for the right wave, but it didn’t come where she was, along with Rachel Wood who took fourth also surfing in her first CCSA event. A great day of surfing for the women’s division nonetheless. LONG BOARD DIVISION: It was a good start, but many were not able to make the rescheduled event, (hope to see them all in July). Much competition was seen as the competitors hit the water, and coming out in first with 28.8 points was Jake Fishman, who also took the men’s final. Making the best of the afternoon conditions that all of them faced. Second place with 23.5 was Jorge Barba, who took first in the semis with a great heat. Larry Casas took third place with 21.9 surfing to seconds in both his others heats. Just a few points off in fourth was Howard Keliinoi (HK) with 21.4 points. Fifth place went to Tristan Edmonds as sixth place went to Tony Barona. MASTERS DIVISION: A great start to the 2016 contest series as Todd Alderson scored 36.5 in the final with his top wave scoring a 7.5, earning him first place. Taking second with 30.3 points was Robby Vogl, who also had a great day of surfing. Scoring 22.3 and receiving third was Gavin Haughey (who took third in men’s). Fourth went to Andrew Hodson with 20.8 points, all of them doing well with the windy afternoon conditions. Fifth place went to Gary Tachell as sixth place went to Jason Miller. Unseen, Yet Loved Mart DeHaan Like others in the blogging community, I’d never met the man known to us as Bruce. Yet when his wife posted a note to the group to let us know that her husband had died, a string of responses from distant places showed we all knew we had lost a friend. Bruce had often opened his heart to us. He talked freely about his concern for others and what was important to him. Many of us felt like we knew him. We would miss the gentle wisdom that came from his years in law enforcement and his faith in Christ. “Though you have not seen [Christ], you love him” (1 Peter 1:8) first New Testament letter the apostle Peter wrote to readers scattered throughout the Roman Empire, “Though you have not seen [Christ], you love him” (1 Pet. 1:8). Peter, as a personal friend of Jesus, was writing to people who had only heard about the One who had given them reason for so much hope in the middle of their troubles. Yet, as a part of the larger community of believers, they loved Him. They knew that at the price of His own life, He had brought them into the everlasting family of God. In recalling our online conversations with Bruce, I gained a renewed appreciation for words written by a first-century witness of Jesus.
