Board Members
Our guest band for September is the Evening Jazz Band from
Modesto Junior College. The band is made up of college
students, music teachers and jazz musicians from the Modesto
area. Directed by Dan Maas, MDJS member and piano player,
the band has prepared traditional jazz and swing charts to
inspire toe tapping and dancing. The Evening Jazz Band has
performed at music festivals in Berkley and Columbia to rave
reviews by professional musicians such as Mic Gillette, Paul
Kontos, and Marv McFadden.
Jazz Jubilee in Mammoth Lakes

The 19th annual Jazz Jubilee was held in Mammoth Lakes July 12th
through 15th. Though not exactly easy to get to from Modesto,
Mammoth Lakes is a beautiful setting for jazz. Fresh air, redwood
trees, jazz music, what more could you ask for?
Organizers of the festival offer a Jazz Camp for young musicians, much
the same as Sacramento’s youth jazz camp. The young musicians
perform at the festival, and are
presented with certificates of
participation during one of the sets.

soloing, and overall sound. The fact that this band has stayed together, as opposed to other youth
bands, is a testament to their enjoyment of the music and each other. Keep an eye out for this
band, they’re fun.
The festival suffered a huge financial blow this year. The company that had supplied tents and
awnings for the festival went out of business. The new company raised the rate for the rentals by
about $30,000. Not to admit defeat, the festival organizers came up with a solution, auctioning off
dinner with a band leader, or member of a band. Competition abounded as each auctionee
attempted to avoid the embarrassment of being auctioned for a lesser amount than others.

Casserly showed off his trombone playing skills in a
festival pick-up trio called “PB&J”. Jimmy Lawlor,
from the Midiri Brothers Sexted, was on drums and
Paul Reid from Cornet Chop Suey played piano. It
was difficult to tell who was having more fun
during the set, the musicians on stage or the
audience.
Casserly also played trombone for Jerry Epperson’s
tribute to famed baritone saxophonist Jerry
Mulligan.

player, organized a fitting tribute to the man who
influenced Epperson’s music. Festival organizer Ken Coulter played drums, and Eve Evans played
piano and sang. Blue Street Jazz Band’s reed player, Nathan Kentner, played briefly, but
unfortunately had to leave to play another set. One highlight, thrown in by Epperson was when at
the end of a tune, he turned his bari sax toward Casserly, who stuck his elbow down the bell to
extend the range of the sax another half step.
At one point in a set by Titan Hot Seven, we were taught what a Polish roll off is. Leader Jeff
Barnhart asked drummer Danny Coots to give us a Polish roll off to start Bourbon Street Parade.
It’s difficult to describe in print, but the Polish roll off has ten beats instead of the usual eight. I
guess the Poles need an extra two beats to get ready.
Fans who follow bands on the festival circuit are very lucky to be
able to talk to and get to know the musicians. I was talking to
Cornet Chop Suey drummer John Gillick after their last set. A fan
came up to John to ask him what kind of drumsticks he uses.
John not only told him, but gave his fan a set of his sticks. From
his reaction, you would have thought John gave him a bar of
gold.
The Mammoth Lakes Jazz Jubilee is worthy of your consideration
when planning your festival schedule, or vacation, for next year.

suffered a hand injury and his fingers were
bandaged. Half way through the set Darrell
Fernandez, of the guest band Fulton Street, came
on stage and helped out with some bass.
