Dr. Simon Mahon, Director of MMIC Design Mimix Broadband, Inc. AWR, THE INNOVATION LEADER IN HF EDA Built by microwave designers for microwave designers, AWR software solutions are used to design the critical RF and microwave portions of products such as cellular phones and smartphones, cellular base station transceivers, satellite communications systems, and defense systems for electronic warfare, radar, and communications. Engineers also use AWR software in the design of wireless-enabled products that incorporate WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, cable and fiber-optic networks, and hundreds of other applications that use wireless technology to “unwire” their systems. In addition, AWR provides unparalleled customer support, ensuring that customers’ software investments are leveraged to their fullest extent. PRODUCTS AWR’s software products target integrated circuits (ICs), multi-chip modules (MCMs), and printed circuit boards (PCBs) within electronic circuits and systems in the wireless, high-frequency wire-line, and electro-optical markets (applications operating above the 1 GHz frequency range). These solutions include a complete and integrated suite of EDA tools to streamline the design process from concept through simulation to final physical implementation. Chuck Campbell, Fellow TriQuint Semiconductor MICROWAVE OFFICE DESIGN SUITE Microwave OfficeTM design suite, AWR’s flagship product, was developed by MMIC designer and AWR founder Dr. Joseph Pekarek because available tools were inadequate for efficient MMIC design. Microwave Office encompasses all the tools required for high-frequency IC (MIC, MMIC), RF printed circuit board (PCB), and module (MCM, SiP) design. Its ability to make complex tasks within microwave design more straightforward and intuitive combined with very high levels of precision and speed makes Microwave Office the industry’s fastest growing RF/ microwave design platform. Its seamlessly-integrated functions include linear and non-linear circuit simulators, electromagnetic (EM) analysis tools, schematic and layout, statistical design capability, and parametric cell libraries with built-in design-rule check (DRC). The cornerstone of the AWR design flow is its Unified Data Model (UDM), a unique, single, object-oriented database synchronized at its core, within the database, not through multiple layers of software and translators. Whether designs are being driven from the schematic, simulation, or layout, the Microwave Office design platform provides everything needed to take an idea from concept MMIC power amplifier layout in Microwave Office. through simulation and directly to physical implementation—all in one platform. AWR’s software tools are continually enhanced with next-generation technologies to ensure they represent the state-of-the-art in user-productivity. AWR innovations include APLAC® harmonic balance simulation technology, ACE automated circuit extraction technology, Intelligent Net (iNet) technology, AXIEM 3D planar EM technology, and patent-pending Multi-Rate Harmonic Balance (MRHB) technology, to name a few. ANALOG OFFICE Based on the success of Microwave Office, sister product Analog Office® focuses on providing a complete and comprehensive design environment for high-frequency silicon processes. Because Analog Office shares AWR’s unique single design environment, it enables users to control and seamlessly integrate best-in-class tools to capture, synthesize, simulate, optimize, layout, extract, and verify RFIC designs from system to final tape-out. Just like Microwave Office, Analog Office software streamlines the design process, increases productivity, and shortens time-to-market. With support for SiGe, BiCMOS and RF CMOS processes, Analog Office is widely used in the design of wireless communications devices ranging from cellular phones and smartphones to a host of other wireless-enabled devices. Ring oscillator layout in Analog Office. VSS gives us a deeper understanding of system aspects. Its flexibility and open platform means parameter optimization can quickly and easily be done. With VSS we were able to successfully realize our system. Lars Pettersson, Research Engineer Acreo AB VISUAL SYSTEM SIMULATOR Simulating and evaluating the performance of complete communications subsystem requires tools that are dedicated to this unique environment. AWR’s VSS is just such a software environment. It allows engineers to design the best system architecture and optimize it through selection of the components most suited to produce the desired performance. Users of VSS begin at the behavioral level, progress to the component level in conjunction with Microwave Office or Analog Office design suites, as well as use actual device measurements to validate the final design. The result is reduced cost by eliminating rework and ensuring that components are not over-specified and unnecessarily expensive. VSS supports every communication standard in use throughout the wireless industry, including UMTS (from GSM through LTE), CDMA2000, DVB-H/DVB-T, WiMAX, IEEE 802.11 (WiFi), and Bluetooth. It also lets users modify the characteristics of these standards to create custom waveforms, which is valuable in the design of defense communications systems and waveforms proprietary to a specific organization. EM TECHNOLOGY As wireless-enabled devices offer more and more features, designers are faced with the daunting challenge of integrating them all within an unyielding footprint. So AWR has had the foresight to develop a tool that enables high-frequency electromagnetic (EM) simulation to be factored into the design flow from the beginning and not just for back-end verification. AXIEM is specifically for 3D planar applications like RF printed circuit boards (PCBs) and modules, antenna and antenna arrays, and low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC), monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC), and RFIC designs. ANALYST™ is powerful, parallelized 3D FEM EM simulation and analysis software that is seamlessly integrated within the AWR Design Environment™ so you can move from circuit concept to full 3D EM verification with a single mouse click. Dane earned his BSEE in 1983 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and began his career as a microwave circuit designer at General Dynamics. In 1998 Dane joined AWR, first as vice president of engineering, and then as executive vice president. In 2006 he was appointed CEO and has led the company to many consecutive years of growth and profitability. Dane Collins CEO Working on the development of advanced MMICs at Hughes Aircraft in the early 1990s, Dr. Pekarek was frustrated by the inadequacy of many of the leading highfrequency EDA tools available at the time. In 1994 he returned to school to earn his Ph.D. and simultaneously launched AWR with the intent of developing a completely new approach to designing high-frequency circuits. Dr. Pekarek earned his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, his M.S. in Electrical Engineering from California State University, Northridge, with a specialization in electromagnetics and microwave circuits, and his Ph.D. in Numerical Electromagnetics from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) with minors in Scientific Computing and Artificial Intelligence. Dr. Pekarek holds a patent for a coplanar waveguide quadrature coupler he developed while at Hughes Aircraft Company. In 2005 he was named IEEE MTT-S Outstanding Young Engineer of the Year in recognition of his Joe Pekarek Founder/CTO innovation in software design and his outstanding achievement in entrepreneurship. Ted Miracco combines engineering expertise with extensive sales and marketing experience at several leading EDA companies, including EEsof, Inc. and Cadence Design Systems. He joined AWR in 1997, and has been a key force driving the company’s success in sales and marketing. Ted is currently focused on AWR’s corporate strategy, including worldwide sales, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate marketing. Ted holds a B.A. degree from Carnegie Mellon University with double majors in electrical and computer engineering. He also minored in and taught economics.
