Fluke wins 2013 IDEA Award for 805 Vibration Meter product design
Everett, Washington, USA – For the second year in a row, the Industrial Designers Society
of America (IDSA) has honoured the industrial design team at Fluke Corporation with an
International Design Excellence Award (IDEA®), the premier international competition honouring
design excellence in products, eco-design, interaction design, packaging, strategy, research,
and concepts. The Fluke team won a Bronze Award in the Commercial and Industrial Products
category for its work on the Fluke 805 Vibration Meter.
The 805 Vibration Meter is an easy-to-use tool for technicians performing preventative
bearing inspections. The user simply presses the sensor tip against the motor housing. The 805
teaches the user how to get an accurate reading by calculating how hard it is being pressed
against a motor. When the user applies the correct force, a ring around the handle lights up:
green for “ready to measure” and red for “try again.”
“Precision vibration analysis is a science requiring complex equipment and know-how,
so the challenge in designing the 805 was to create a handheld tool that dramatically simplifies
the measurement process,” said Matthew Marzynski, industrial design manager for Fluke Corp.
“By designing an interface that makes measurement taking and interpreting the results easy, we
created a product that anyone on the maintenance crew can use successfully,” added Marzynski.

LEGO Group reveals design of “The LEGO House”
Copenhagen, Denmark – The LEGO Group has
revealed the design of the experience centre “The
LEGO House”. The centre, which will be built in
Denmark, illustrates the systematic creativity of
LEGO bricks and is expected to attract 250,000
visitors annually.
When the LEGO House opens in 2016
visitors to the house in Billund, Denmark will enter
a building that resembles gigantic LEGO bricks
combined and stacked in a creative way to create
an imaginative experience both outside and inside.
In the experience center guests can expect hours
full of active fun while at the same time engaging
in an educational and inspirational experience –

explained: “The LEGO House will show the past,
present and future of the LEGO idea and I am certain it will be a fantastic place, where LEGO fans of all ages and their families and friends
will get a wide range of unique LEGO experiences. It is our belief that LEGO play fosters innovative thinking, and the LEGO House gives us
an opportunity to make it very tangible what LEGO play offers and how it stimulates children’s creativity and learning.”
The project has been under way for more than a year and today the design of the house was revealed. “Architect firm BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) has designed a building that encapsulates what LEGO play and LEGO values are all about,” said
Hans Peter Folmann, Marketing responsible for the LEGO House and added: “The creative use of the LEGO brick shape is a true visualisation
of the systematic creativity that is at the core of LEGO play, so we believe that this is the right look for the LEGO House. And it simply looks
amazing.”
The LEGO House will be approximately 30 metres tall, and there will be public access to several rooftop gardens from the outside.
The building will offer visitors a total of 7,600 square metres of exhibition areas, a café, a unique LEGO store and a large public square.
“It is our wish that the LEGO House is used by both visitors and the citizens of Billund; the birthplace and home town of the LEGO
Group. For this reason a large part of the building – 1,900 square metres - will be a covered square with free access for the public, and we
hope it will be a natural gathering point for people living in Billund as well as visitors. We do not know what specific activities will be in
the house,” said Hans Peter Folmann and added: “We are very ambitious with the LEGO House – It is our hope and mission that a visit to the
LEGO House will be an experience you will never forget, no matter if you are a long time fan or just want to know more about what LEGO
play stands for.”
Construction of the building is expected to begin in early 2014 and the LEGO House will be inaugurated in 2016. n

Go-ahead given for “UK’s greenest building”
London, UK – Norwich councillors have given the go-ahead for a new low carbon exemplar building for the University of East Anglia within
the Norwich Research Park (NRP).
BDP’s engineers are working on the NRP Enterprise Centre which will push the boundaries of the university’s already established
approach to developing energy efficient buildings. Working with Architype, the project will be the UK’s first commercial building to achieve
a BREEAM Outstanding rating, and be Passivhaus certified.
Half of the building will provide lettable floor space for SME start up businesses including offices, meeting rooms and hot desks,
with the rest housing teaching and learning facilities for the University.
The project is on target to be a ‘carbon sink’, through maximising the use of local materials and construction. It will not only provide
a low embodied carbon building but help stimulate the local economy and traditional skills. Timber will come from Thetford Forest, straw
for the innovative prefabricated thatch panels from Norfolk and building materials such as rammed chalk, heather and flint will all be locally
sourced and fabricated.

CTBUH names best tall buildings for 2013
Chicago, USA – Highly distinctive towers in Canada, China, the UK
and UAE have been named the best tall buildings in the world for
2013 by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH.
The four regional winners include The Bow in Calgary, Canada
(Americas); CCTV Headquarters in Beijing, China (Asia & Australia);
The Shard, London (Europe); Sowwah Square, Abu Dhabi, United
Arab Emirates (Middle East & Africa).
An overall winner for the “Best Tall Building Worldwide” will
be named from the four regional winners at the CTBUH 12th Annual
Awards Ceremony and Dinner at the Illinois Institute of Technology,
November 7, in the iconic Crown Hall, designed by Mies van der Rohe.
The 10-Year and Innovation awards will be announced separately
prior to the ceremony.
The Council received more than 60 entries from around the
world for the Best Tall Building awards.
“The winners and finalists include some of the most striking
buildings on the global landscape,” said Jeanne Gang, awards jury
chair and principal of Studio Gang Architects. “They represent
resolutions to a huge range of contemporary issues, from energy
consumption to integration with the urban realm on the ground,”
added Gang.
The CTBUH Best Tall Building Awards are an independent
review of new projects, judged by a panel of industry executives.
Projects are recognised for making an extraordinary contribution
to the advancement of tall buildings and the urban environment,
and for achieving sustainability at the broadest level.
This year the CTBUH Board of Trustees awarded the Lynn S.
Beedle Lifetime Achievement Award to Henry Cobb, founding partner
of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners. His list of tall-building achievements
includes Hancock Place in Boston and the Library (US Bank) Tower
in Los Angeles. Past winners of the Lynn S. Beedle Award, include
Helmut Jahn, Lord Norman Foster, Cesar Pelli, William Pedersen and
Adrian Smith.
“Henry Cobb has demonstrated
phenomenal leadership throughout his
career, particularly on Hancock Place,” said
CTBUH chairman Timothy Johnson.
“Cobb’s leadership in smoothing
out the difficulties around Hancock Place
set the standard for future retrofits and
advocated for positive changes to building
codes around tall buildings,” added Johnson.

Entries open in two million dollar sustainable construction competition
Zurich, Switzerland – The Holcim Awards is
one of the most significant competitions in its
field in terms of reputation and international
scope. The fourth cycle of the competition
offering a total of USD 2 million in prize money
is now open for entries. The competition seeks
leading projects from industry professionals
and bold ideas from the “Next Generation”
that contribute to sustainability within
a rc h i te c t u re, b u i l d i n g, c i v i l e n gi n e e r i n g,
l a n d s c a p e a n d u r b a n d e s i g n , a s we l l a s
construc tion mater ials and technologies.

The Holcim Awards (main category)
is open to architects, planners, engineers, project owners, builders and construction firms that showcase sustainable responses to
technological, environmental, socio-economic and cultural issues with contemporary building and construction. Projects must have
reached an advanced stage of design, have a high probability of execution, and may not have started construction before 1 July 2013.
The competition also seeks visionary projects and bold ideas for the “Next Generation” (young professionals and students
category). All authors must be aged between 18 and 30 years of age: (date of birth between July 2, 1982 and March 24, 1996), and
the project may not have started construction before July 1, 2013.
Organised by the Swiss-based Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction the competition is conducted in parallel in five
regions of the world in 2013/14 followed by a global phase in 2015. Regional winners will be announced at Holcim Awards ceremonies
in late 2014 in Moscow (for region Europe), Toronto (North America), Medellín (Latin America), Beirut (Africa Middle East) and Jakarta
(Asia Pacific).
Streamlined online entry process
Taking part in the competition has been streamlined by an
interactive online entry form. Entries must be made in English
using the web-based form to provide information on authors,
a project summary and response to the “target issues” for
sustainable construction, technical details, as well as project

Internationally renowned architects and academics in juries
Independent jury panels of experts evaluate all entries against
the five “target issues” for sustainable construction, which cover
economic, social and environmental performance as well as
contextual/aesthetic impact, and innovation/transferability. The
juries are headed by Jean-Philippe Vassal (for region Europe),
Toshiko Mori (North America), Bruno Stagno (Latin America),
Howayda Al-Harithy (Africa Middle East) and Rahul Mehrotra

SICIS to open a showroom in Beijing
Milan, Italy – In October 2013, SICIS will be inaugurating a showroom, in Beijing, China. The
Italian maison is delighted to announce an agreement signed with the distributor for the market
in Beijing, Di Lusso Gaopin (Beijing) Design Co. Ltd.
The showroom, situated on the third floor of a building in the heart of Beijing, extends
over a 600 square metres single-level area. Its rooms will present the magical universe of mosaic
art as interpreted by one of the world leading manufacturers, Sicis, and the most sophisticated
design works.
The showroom is split into two areas. The first recreates the noble and refined mood
of an elegant home, with marble floors, delicate floral mosaics on the walls, and Sicis Next
Art furnishings. Sculptured chairs, enriched with inlaid mosaics, add colour and light to the
environment, and alternate with brand new furnishings, skilfully matched with mirrors, tables
and lamps. The second exhibition area is made up of libraries of mosaics in marble, glass and
other materials, elegantly displayed to meet the most demanding needs of architects, designers
and private customers.
An elegant mosaic floor depicting a large dragon on a background of red, black and gold,
purposely designed for the Beijing concept store, pays tribute to Chinese culture and celebrates
the union between Italian mosaics and Chinese decorative art. The space also features a series
of mosaic surfaces embellished by gold details, iridescent geometric designs and oriental fans.
In the Beijing showroom, the evocative power of mosaics leads to a unique sensory
experience that perfectly portrays the complex world of Sicis. This exclusive paradigm, dictated by
a mixture between ancient Chinese elegance and all-Italian quality and know-how, provides the

Grimshaw wins competition to design iconic museum in Istanbul
London, UK – After a competitive selection process Grimshaw is
delighted to announce that it has been selected by the Vehbi Koç
Foundation to design Koç Contemporary, a new contemporary
art museum in Istanbul. The Vehbi Koç Foundation is a unique
organisation, which has made an extraordinary and sustained
contribution to the cultural and social life of Istanbul and Turkey.
The new project has been conceived to fulfil the Foundation’s
vision of showcasing the growing Koç collection to the broadest
possible audience and to place these works in a national, regional
and international context of contemporary artists. The Museum is
due to be open to the public in 2016. Grimshaw’s winning proposal
was selected from a long-list of 20 world-renowned entries.

area of Istanbul, which is undergoing rapid redevelopment and fast
becoming one of the most dynamic districts in Europe. Grimshaw’s
design will create a building which is an extension of this vibrant
public realm where the boundary between inside and out is blurred
and where passing pedestrians are tempted through exciting public
spaces, which are rich in activity and surprise. The creation of Koç
Contemporary will result in a landmark building entirely derived
from its context with the mosaic tiled forms of traditional Ottoman
architecture providing the inspiration for the design’s materials
concept.
Working in a multi disciplinary team of Thornton Thomasetti,
Max Fordham, Neill Woodger Acoustics, lighting specialists Jason
Bruges, the Grimshaw-led design will function as a civic icon, visitor
attraction, a location for study, as well as a place to conserve,
preserve and restore. Resolving the conflicts between the needs
of the visitor and the needs of the collection were crucial to the
competition-winning scheme. Grimshaw’s design will embrace the
collection in all its diversity; its works on paper, paintings, video,
media installations, performance art and music events are integral
to the design of the visitor spaces.
Speaking of the project win, Kirsten Lees, Partner in Charge
of the design, commented: “Koç Contemporary is a hugely exciting
and ambitious project that will have a significant impact not only on
the role of contemporary art in Istanbul, to educate and exchange
ideas, but on the regeneration of a rich and diverse area of the city.
The inter-relationship between architecture, place and the collections
informed our proposals to enrich the visitor experience. The brief
provided a remarkable opportunity for integrating a wide range of
activities, events and disciplines in a single complex. We are honoured
to be a part of designing such a vital cultural landmark.” n

Archifest 2013 explores the theme of “Small is Beautiful”
Singapore – Archifest, Singapore’s
annual architecture festival organised
by Singapore Institute of Architects
(SIA), will take place from 27 September
2013 to 13 October 2013 at Dhoby
Ghaut Green.
In its seventh year, Archifest
2013 will explore a brand new theme
“Small is Beautiful”. Based on this
theme, Archifest 2013 will use the city
as a laboratory and frame Singapore as
an urban ecosystem beyond singular
architectural projects. It will explore and celebrate projects, design
studios, communities, businesses and ideas that might be small by
choice and circumstance but are large in ambition and impact.
The festival will also invite visitors and guests to pause and
notice the small, humble and respectful things around us that make
living in the city wonderful.
With a refreshing new theme for the festival this year, more
partners and collaborators will be encouraged to participate in
Singapore’s only architecture festival. New target audience for this
year’s festival programming includes the little ones – Children and
their Family. There will be newly launched workshops and activities
catered from toddlers to tertiary students in the School of Urban
Ideas, including 3D Printing workshops, walks in the city and more
to cultivate an early appreciation of our city’s vibrant architecture
and design.
Other Archifest highlights include the zero-waste Festival
Pavilion, anchoring the festival in new location Dhoby Ghaut Green
as the key venue. The annual Archifest Conference will take place
on 1 October 2013 at a new venue – Raffles City Convention Centre
to coincide with the SIA Design Awards Presentation Ceremony.
Confirmed speakers for the Archifest Conference include keynote
speaker Yoshiharu Tsukamoto from Tokyo-based Atelier BowWow, Manfred Yuen from Groundwork Architecture + Urbanism
(Hong Kong) and Singaporean architects Chang Yong Ter and
Colin Seah.
Much loved activities are brought back this year, such as
the highly popular series of specially curated Architours routes
to discover the city, and a line-up of independently organised
Festival Fringe events; including an urban prototyping project
involving Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD),
and Creative Mornings sessions where the creative communities
in Singapore will gather at the Pavilion for a morning of inspiring,
sharing and networking as well as exhibitions and talks.
In conjunction with SIA’s 50th Anniversary this year,
Archifest 2013 will also celebrate the SIA Design Awards
Presentation Ceremony on the 1st of October 2013. The SIA Design
Awards Presentation Ceremony will recognise outstanding projects
in the 13th SIA Architectural Design Awards and 1st SIA-Rigel
Bathroom Design Awards. The winners of the awards will also
present their design philosophy and concept for the projects.
Fringe events for this year’s festival will feature new
partners and exciting projects such as the collaboration with the
Embassy of Israel to present Israel’s Story Gardens: Where words
come alive. This exhibition will spotlight the City of Holon; also
known as a Children’s City and will open on Children’s Day on 4
October in Central Library.
Another Fringe event that hopes to make an impact in our
city is the urban intervention and prototyping project involving
the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) and
Macpherson Community titled “Our City”. Also, expect to see film
screenings, photography exhibitions and more as part of the
festival Fringe.
Finally, closing the festival will be the Urban Picnic, which
will take place on 12 October 2013. The Archifest Pavilion at Dhoby
Ghaut Green will be transformed into a beautiful picnic spot in the
city and will also feature Singapore’s first ever Experience Market
with performances by local creative collective Basically <bold>
to entertain picnickers. Conceptualised as an alternative retail
and F&B experience, the Experience Market involves the customer
in more than just a product transaction, but also in its creation
and production. The market will also feature experiences-forsale; with creative individuals from Singapore and collaborators
from neighboring countries offering intangible experiences such
as unconventional tips and newfound skills uniquely revolving

Interview With Festival Director Adib Jalal
Q: What does your role as a Festival
Director entail and why do you enjoy it?
As a festival director, my job is to set
the broad strokes of the festival and set
a vision and direction for the rest of the
team to work towards. There’s also a lot of
talking to the team and festival partners
to ensure that all the pieces work together
towards creating a great platform where
ideas for the city can thrive.
The role also means that I dip my fingers
into every aspect of the festival, some
more than others. This covers a lot of
things from content development,
building relationships with programme
and festival partners, design, copywriting
and more.

Q: In what ways is Archifest 2013
different from last year’s event?
While last year saw a big change in the
format of Archifest, this year is all about
refining and building on top of it.
It is very enjoyable because I get to have
conversations with a wide range of people
who are interested in the city from CEOs
to students and independent creatives
to mid-level managers. Being involved
in every aspect of a festival also means
that the creative process is extremely rich
and varied where I am constantly learning
new things! But mostly, it is enjoyable
because I get to create something that
truly activates the city.
This year, the Pavilion will see even more
interesting programming such as the
Pop-Up Library at the Pavilion that we are
creating in collaboration with National
Library Board. This Library will feature
books selected by 50 Singapore creative
personalities from not just architecture but
other fields such as graphic design and we
hope this Pop-Up Library could activate
Dhoby Ghaut Green as a public recreational
space in the city.
Q: What are some of the key directions
for Archifest 2013?
If last year’s festival sees the city through
a telescope by “Rethinking Singapore”,
then this year is about looking at it
through the microscope by exploring
the theme “Small is Beautiful”. With this
theme, you will see that most of our
programmes try to highlight everything
that is small by choice and circumstance
but are large in ambition and impact. We

Green Building Councils
Emirates Green Building Council launches first EGBC Awards in 8 categories to honour excellence in
sustainability initiatives
Dubai, UAE – Emirates Green Building Council (EmiratesGBC),
an independent forum aimed at conserving the environment
by strengthening and promoting green building practices, has
announced the inaugural EGBC Awards to honour excellence in
sustainable built environments and to recognise innovative ideas
that contribute to a ‘green’ construction sector in the UAE and the
Middle East and North Africa region.
The first EGBC Awards will be presented in eight categories
with seven honours for organisations that demonstrate clear
implementation of sustainable design, construction and operation
of buildings or structures. One award, the Dr Owainati Student
Award, will be presented to university students for innovative and
inspiring ideas that will contribute to sustainable development in
the construction and building industry.
Adnan Sharafi, EmiratesGBC Chairman, said: “Across the
Middle East and North Africa region, the construction sector
is placing greater emphasis on sustainability, in line with the
development goals of governments that focus on the environment
and efficient use of energy resources. This is particularly reflected
in the ‘green economy for sustainable development’ strategy
announced by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al
Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.”
The inaugural EGBC Awards will be presented in the following
categories: Operational Green Building Award; Carbon Savings/
Reduction Programme of the Year Award; Green Building System
Award; Green Building Material/Product Award; Green Building
Research Award; Training Initiative of the Year Award; Refurbishment
of the Year Award; and the Dr Owainati Student Award.
The awards effectively cover every aspect of green building
development – from design consideration for new buildings to
retrofitting older buildings as well as new research on environmentfriendly buildings. “With buildings accounting for a large component
of energy use as well as greenhouse gas emissions, incorporating
sustainable building practices is imperative for reducing the
ecological footprint and promoting energy use efficiency. EGBC
Awards will therefore honour best practices across the industry
supply chain,” explained Mr. Sharafi. Submissions for the awards

winners will be announced at the second annual EmiratesGBC

Green Star for Mauritius
Mauritius – GBCM in collaboration with the Green Building Councils of Australia and South Africa has finalised the customisation of the
Green Star SA rating tool for use in Mauritius. After two years of discussions and hard work with GBC Australia and GBC South Africa, a local
context report was prepared and approved, this document will allow the GBCSA to certify office buildings in Mauritius using a bespoke
version of the Green Star SA tool. Mauritian office projects can register through the GBCSA website for certification since July this year.
GBCSA will work closely with the GBCM throughout the certification process of green building projects so that Mauritian professionals
develop the capacity to certify buildings themselves in the nearby future.
Green Schools
Global Coalition for Green Schools
GBCM will join the Global Coalition for Green Schools. The Coalition is dedicated to celebrating and learning from the diversity of schools
across the globe that are committed to conserving resources, enhancing the well-being of its students and educating environmentally
literate graduates. Members of the Coalition will participate in a number of initiatives throughout the year, including Green Apple Day of
Service and The Global Coalition for Green Schools Annual Summit.
The Coalition is a partnership between the Center for Green Schools and the World Green Building Council (WGBC), and will be
launched in October 2013 at the World GBC Congress in Cape Town, South Africa. The Coalition will equip communities with the resources
and support they need to transform their schools.

World Green Building Week
This year’s World Green Building Week will take place from 16 to 20 September 2013. The Event which unites communities from across the
globe is already in its fourth year and this year’s theme is “Greener Buildings, Better Places, Healthier People”.
The theme points out the value of green buildings to people. Green Buildings feature amongst others higher productivity for office
workers, improved learning outcomes for students, healthier workplaces, or better homes. Also this year GBCM will take part with a series
of events in Mauritius to celebrate World Green Building Week; more details are available on GBCM’s website (www.gbcm.mu).
Green Apple Day of Service
Another important upcoming event is the Green Apple Day of Service on 28th September. This annual event gives individuals, companies
and organisations the opportunity to transform schools into healthy, safe, cost-efficient and productive learning places where students
have clean and healthy air to breathe, and where energy and resources are conserved.
The Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is the organisation behind the Green Apple movement
and GBCM is bringing this initiative to Mauritius. GBCM works closely with the Ministry of Education and will bring students, teachers, parents, elected officials and more together
to participate in local service projects to support healthy, sustainable schools (www.mygreenapple.com). n

reen Health City is an ecologically sustainable development
designed to support and promote the condition of physical
and emotional human health. Situated in China’s Hainan
Province in Boao Lecheng on the Wanquan River, five island
districts bring together world-class medical facilities, employ new
