PASSION ON THE PITCH AND IN THE STANDS!
It’s been an action-packed few weeks
for Franco Foda and his charges. The
Red Devils got their season off to a good
start with a 3-3 come-from-behind home
draw against Union Berlin on Matchday
1, followed by a 2-1 win over Aalen in
the league and a comfortable 3-1 victory
in their DFB Cup first round tie against
Rostock. Now, the Red Devils are eager to
keep their season up and running when
they host TSV 1860 Munich at the Betzenberg on Sunday, August 26, 2012.
Foda and his men came painfully close to
picking up three points in their season
opener against 1. FC Union Berlin. After clawing back from a two-goal deficit,
Hendrick Zuck put the Red Devils in front,
but they were denied victory in the dying
seconds as the match finished 3-3. The
coaching staff, players and fans were a bit
devastated after conceding the late equalizer, but Foda praised his team’s great
fighting spirit and the players as well as

Franco Foda, what do you think of your
team’s performances in the first three
official matches of the season?
You have to look at each game individually. The Berlin game was a game of two
halves. We didn’t push forward enough in
the first half and fell behind early after the
restart, but we stormed back and turned a
two-goal deficit into a 3-2 lead. The late
equalizer was a bit devastating, but we
showed passion and great fighting spirit.
The 3-3 draw with Union Berlin was followed by a win over Aalen …
Yes, and I am certainly pleased with the
win. We deserved to win though we needed
ferous support from the stands. “The fans
kept cheering us on even when we were
trailing by two goals. That was incredible,”
Tobi Sippel said after the game.
Four days later, the Red Devils claimed a
well-deserved 2-1 away win over newlypromoted VfR Aalen thanks to a brace from
Albert Bunjaku. In Foda’s third competitive game in charge, the Red Devils booked
their place in the second round of the DFB
Cup by beating FC Hansa Rostock 3-1 away
from home as goals from Ariel Borysiuk,
Hendrick Zuck and Kostas Fortounis secured the win at the DKB Arena in Rostock.

strong start to the season and keep the
momentum going when they host TSV
1860 Munich at the Fritz Walter Stadium on
Matchday 3. Foda and his men have been
working hard and diligently on the training
ground all week. Mimoun Azaouagh and
Kwame Nsor have resumed team training
again and are slowly nearing full fitness.
Also Rodnei is on the road to recovery
and is expected to resume training soon.
Mathias Abel sustained a laceration to his
forehead last Sunday but is expected to be
fit in time for the game against the Lions.
After missing the Rostock game with ankle
joint problems, Alexander Bugera is hoping to return to action on Sunday.
Fans and players alike are primed for the
clash with the Lions and eager to turn the
Betzenberg into a caldron on Sunday.

and we did not allow any opportunity for a
counter-attack from Aalen. Nevertheless,
we know that there is still a lot of hard
work to do.
FCK advanced to the second round of the
DFB Cup, but Rostock came agonizingly
close to finding an equalizer in the dying
minutes…
How hard will it be to get the right result
against the Lions?
We could have spared ourselves much
stress in the closing stages of the game,
but we advanced to the next round and
that’s all that counts.
The Lions are well organized in defense
and have quality up front too. However,
we need to trust in ourselves, our abilities,
and our quality. We want to win; and - with
the support we receive from our great fans
- we can win this game.

TSV 1860 Munich was once the city's biggest club, winning the Bundesliga in
1966, three years before their local rivals
FC Bayern Munich won the title and began
to dominate German soccer. The Lions also
played in the 1965 European Cup Winners'
Cup final, losing to West Ham United.
After about a decade in the top division,
including a brief Champions League appearance in the 1999-2000 season, they
dropped down to the second division in
2004. Just when it looked as if TSV 1860
Munich would be disallowed from professional soccer, Jordanian businessman
Hasan Abdullah Mohamed Ismaik bought
up 49 per cent of the club’s voting rights
for a total sum of €18 million to become
the first Arab investor in the Bundesliga
in May 2011. A strong second half of the
2011-12 season saw head coach Maurer
and his men finish in a respectable sixth
place; and now, the Lions are hungry for
more. Following the departures of attackers Kevin Volland and Stefan Aigner,
promising young forward Moritz Stoppelkamp and journeyman striker Ismael
Blanco have been added to the squad.
The Lions have further bolstered their
ranks by signing Poland international defender Grzegorz Wojtkowiak and Grigoris
Makos, a Greek international midfielder.
1860 Munich head coach Maurer and his
men got their season off to a good start,
defeating Bundesliga newbie Regensburg
1-0 before drawing 2-2 with Dresden and
beating FC Hennef 05 6-0 in the first
round of the DFB Cup. However, headto-head statistics bode well for FCK.
The Lions only managed to pick up five
wins in 24 games at the Fritz Walter Stadium to date. 1860 fans would love to
forget their team’s last trip to the Betzenberg as FCK beat 1860 Munich 4-0 on
March 29, 2010.
‘I STILL ENJOY CLOSE TIES WITH FCK‘
Hello Daniel, having emerged through
the youth ranks at FCK, you got your
first taste of senior soccer in the Red
Devils’ game against FC Bayern Munich
in December 2005. You are still FCK’s
youngest player to score a goal in the
Bundesliga at 18 years and 28 days. Are
you still in touch with anyone at the
club?
isfied and happy. I have found my place
and I feel very comfortable at 1860 Munich. First of all, I want to stay healthy. I
hope my journey is not over yet and I can
continue my professional development.
I still enjoy close ties with FCK. I made my
Bundesliga debut for FCK and had a great
time at the Betzenberg. Most of the lads
have moved on, but I am still interested
in how the Red Devils fare. I look forward
to playing at the Betzenberg again.
We want to be among the top contenders. We have a good team; and we have
individual quality. Therefore, I hope we
will finish ranked among the league’s top
teams.
You have developed into a professional
soccer player. How would you describe
your personal development as a player?
Unfortunately, I was plagued with several
injuries at the end of my first year in professional soccer. Nevertheless, I am sat-

We have many new signings and they
need to get properly integrated into the
team. We want to continue to play effective attacking soccer. That’s what made

season, “the Lions” – as TSV 1860 Munich is commonly known - are one of
the favorites to make the leap to the
Bundesliga this time around. Following nine years of Bundesliga 2 soccer
and significant financial problems, the
