March 2016 - Peninsula Yacht Club
March 2016 The Watch Easter Brunch Sunday, March 27 Established 1996 - Lake Norman 35° 28.08’ N - 80° 56.26’ W Volume 229 Club News General Mananger Message The Peninsula Yacht Club Clubhouse: 704-892-9858 Fax: 704-892-0961 Ship Store: 704-895-8996 We had a great time at the Boat Show last month, thanks to everyone that stopped by to visit us at the PYC booth. The Boat Show is a special time of the year for us for a few reasons. It sparks a lot of public interest in membership, and it makes us eager for boating season to begin and for winter to come to its end! It is also the best time to refer a friend that has been waiting for the best incentives to join the Club. www.PeninsulaYacht.com Management General Manager Bruce Furman, ext. 23 bfurman@peninsulayacht.com Club Accountant Ellen H. Gury, ext. 36 egury@peninsulayacht.com Marina Manager Harry Smith, ext. 28 hsmith@peninsulayacht.com Membership & Social Director Clair Knox, ext. 31 cknox@peninsulayacht.com Clubhouse Manager Jeff Barry, ext. 41 jbarry@peninsulayacht.com Executive Chef Jamie Bostian, ext. 24 chef@peninsulayacht.com Bruce Furman General Manager Starting in March, we have increased our “Member Referral Credit” to $500 dollars for Yacht Members and $250 for Social Members. If they join, YOU will receive a $500 or $250 “Thank You” credit to your account. We also have an end of year drawing for those who referred someone during the year; see Clair or the Watch for more details. I think that we would all agree on this definition of a private club from CMAA Contemporary Club Management: “A private club is a place where people with a common bond of some type – similar interests, experiences, backgrounds, professions – can congregate for social and recreational purposes.” So don’t forget to talk to your friends and remind them why you love being a member at the Yacht Club. Word of mouth can be powerful! Sincerely, Bruce Furman, CCM 4th Annual Chili Cook Off! The U.S. Coast Guard is concerned about the sale and availability of unapproved recreational and commercial vessel Harry Smith navigation lights. Purchasers of such lighting should be aware replacement lighting may be improper for its Marina Manager application due to the failure by manufacturers to meet technical certification requirements. Furthermore, technical advances in marine lighting, such as the use of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), rope lighting, underwater lighting, and other various types of decorative lighting, may violate navigation light provisions of the Nautical Rules of the Road. This Safety Alert is provided for informational purposes only and does not relieve any domestic or international safety, operational, or material requirement. This Alert has been developed by the U.S. Coast Guard’s Headquarters’ Offices of Navigation Systems, Auxiliary and Boating Safety, and Investigations and Casualty Analysis. For questions or concerns, please email cgnav@uscg.mil. For more information on this topic please go to the link below. http://www.uscg.mil/hq/cg5/cg545/alerts/1015.pdf View from the Foredeck By Paul Doucette Paul Doucette Sail Fleet Captain Over the past year, our 2015 Commodore Bob Curran and others have led an effort to start a new racing event which is an annual match race between PYC and LNYC. It has taken many months, and we still haven’t picked the date, but we have finalized the rules (sailing instructions) for the competition. If you are not familiar with match racing then check it out on You Tube. The race involves only two boats and is typically a short format (18-20 min) on an olympic course (round a windward and a leeward mark) twice around. It is all about tactics and strategy and it is really exciting to watch. Women’s Match Racing Team There will be competitions for both the men and the women. We are building a women’s team right now for which you may have already seen a previous invitation to try it out. I want to invite any female member of the club to come and be part of the team. Experience is not critical though certainly helpful. Enthusiasm is most important. We had our introductory meeting in late January where seven women from PYC came forward. We introduced the four coaches and outlined a training schedule over several months. The bottom line here is that we are going to train our female team members on the exact vessel that they will race (J/70) and the best of the group will represent PYC in the actual race. The more women who step up to the challenge the better for everyone. You have a unique opportuntity to learn from professional racers. Please reach out to Bruce Furman or me for more information. Icicle Series - Races 1 & 2 The first two races of the Icicle Series took place on January 9th. The exceptional wind conditions made for very competitive racing that day. The following boats are leading their classes: Smokin ‘J (Spin A), 38 Special (Non Spin A), and Trade Wins (Non Spin B). Races 3 & 4 were postponed due to inclement weather. Up-Coming Events Saturday, April 9 - 150 Bridge Race PYC Sail Fleet Committee - Meeting once a month this volunteer group, open to all PYC members, is working to support the continued growth of our sailing programs and events through building depth in our race management capabilities. All welcome - Contact Paul Doucette at paul.lknsailing@gmail.com. Learn or Practice your Race Committee skills – Doug Riley of OYC is taking on the race committee duties for the Icicle Series and invites anyone who wishes to learn about race management to join him on any of the race dates. All are welcome. Reach out to paul.lknsailing@gmail.com if you are interested. 4 48-Hr Cancellation Policy Applies to All Club Events Commodore’s Comments 2016 Fleet Committee PYC – A Boating Epicenter David Goodman Education/Publicity Mid this year, we will launch our lending library of nautical books and the opportunity for members to donate boating topic books from personal libraries and dedicate the book to commemorate a family member, friend, fellow member, PYC staff member, a birthday, in memory of or to honor someone and all at no cost.
