We celebrate them today as examples of a dynamic couple who, with a sincere and unassuming commitment to helping others, embody our mission of empowerment, excellence through community activism and dedication to affecting social change. Bill and Debbie have been married for forty years, and have two sons. Deborah Sasso Debbie Sasso served on the President’s Advisory Board of the John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls High School for eight years. In 2008 she was the Special Events Co-Chair for the Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation’s Borrowers Masquerade Ball. In 2010 she was the co-Host of Michael Lewis Author Event for the Free Library of Philadelphia and the Co-Chair of Philadelphia Hospitality’s Vision for PhiladelphiaAward. Also in 2010, Debbie was a Dinner Committee Member for the American Catholic Historical Society’s Barry Award Dinner. William Sasso William Sasso has served as chairman of Stradley Ronon Stevens & Young’s management committee and board of directors since 1994. As chairman, he is responsible for oversight and management of more than 195 attorneys in Stradley Ronon’s six offices in Philadelphia, Malvern and Harrisburg, Pa.; Wilmington, Del.; Cherry Hill, N.J.; and Washington, D.C. During his 30-plus years of experience, he has counseled privately and publicly held companies and religious and nonprofit organizations in various matters, including general corporate and securities law, mergers and acquisitions, health care, tax and real estate. Mr. Sasso was the 2006 recipient of the William Penn Award, the highest honor bestowed upon a business person in Greater Philadelphia. Awarded annually since 1949, recipients are chosen for their outstanding contributions toward the betterment of the region, their professional accomplishments and their commitment to charity as well as to the community. Notably, Mr. Sasso and the firm were selected as the 2009 Anti-Defamation League (ADL) Americanism Award recipients – which recognized their commitment to the Greater Philadelphia community and to the values of ADL. In 2006, Mr. Sasso was honored with the American Jewish Committee’s Judge Learned Hand Award, presented each year to a member of the Philadelphia Bar whose achievements exemplify the high principles and noble traditions associated with Judge Learned Hand. He was also included in the 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008 and 2007 editions of The Best Lawyers in America, regarded as a definitive guide to legal excellence in the United States. Selection for Best Lawyers is based on a peer-review survey in which more than 1.8 million individual evaluations are reviewed. In addition, Mr. Sasso was named a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer® consecutively since 2004 by a vote of his peers. continued on the next page ‘William & Deborah Sasso’ continued In 2010, Mr. Sasso and the firm were presented with the “Stand and Deliver Award” by the Philadelphia Academies for their commitment to providing educational opportunities to inner-city youth. In addition to his legal practice, he is widely recognized as a community leader in the Delaware Valley. He served as chairman of the board of directors of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce (2003-2004). In this role, Mr. Sasso oversaw the Chamber’s executive committee and its board of directors, which included advancing the business community’s agenda. He continues to serve on the Chamber’s board and executive committee, and he is also a member of the Paradigm Award Committee, which honors the outstanding business woman of the year. Mr. Sasso also serves on the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau board and executive committee. Mr. Sasso is especially interested in charitable activities in the areas of education and health care. Tom Ridge to be a member of the board of directors of the Pennsylvania Economic Development Finance Authority • former chairman of the board, Manor Junior College • appointed by former Philadelphia Mayor John F. Street to serve on the Children’s Commission Advisory Committee. Sharon Pinkenson Executive Director, Greater Philadelphia Film Office Sharon Pinkenson has served as the Executive Director of the Greater Philadelphia Film Office for 18 years during the terms of three mayors and three governors. She is responsible for all aspects of the office, founded in 1985. On July 1, 1992, she successfully spun off the municipal film office as a multi-county driving force for economic development, a non-profit corporation that has generated more than three billion dollars during her tenure. Ms. Pinkenson markets the City of Philadelphia and the surrounding region to the film, video, and television industry, and coordinates every aspect of production from cast and crew, support businesses and locations to community relations, and government services and incentives, while enhancing the region’s reputation internationally on both the big and small screen. She also directs local goods and services to productions; publishes the Greater Philadelphia Film & Video Guide, the astoundingly popular website www.film.org, and advocates for the growth of Philadelphia’s indigenous film community through the Greater Philadelphia Filmmakers program. A lifelong Philadelphian, Ms. Pinkenson graduated from the Philadelphia High School for Girls and Temple University. Prior to her appointment, Ms. Pinkenson worked as a costume designer and wardrobe stylist in the film industry. She is the first Film Office director to come to the post directly from film production. She serves as the Founding Producer. Throughout her career Sharon has remained an important and recognizable figure in the Philadelphia community. In addition to her numerous memberships in professional organizations, she serves on Mayor Michael Nutter’s Cultural Advisory Council as well as Temple University’s President’s Advisory Board and Temple University School of Communications and Theater, Drexel University’s Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design (from which she received a Doctor of Humane Letters, causa honoris), Big Picture Alliance, the selection boards for One Film Philadelphia, Diamondscreen: a Temple University School of Communications and Theater student film festival and the advisory boards of the Bryn Mawr Film Institute and the Philadelphia Film Society. She has served on the search committee for the President of Kimmel Center and served on Mayor Nutter’s search committee to appoint the Chief Cultural Officer of the newly created Office of Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy for the City of Philadelphia. She was also named by Dunkin’ Donuts and the Philadelphia Eagles as one of the 75 Greatest Living Philadelphians and Philadelphia Magazine as one of the 50 most Powerful Philadelphians. Married to businessman Joseph Weiss, she has three married daughters, three granddaughters and has been a resident of Center City Philadelphia since 1964. DIANE HEERY, C.S.A. Casting Director, Heery Casting A casting director with over 20 years’ experience, Diane is a member of the prestigious Casting Society of America. Diane has cast principal actors in many independent feature films, in addition to major studio films including: “Jersey Girl” (K. Smith), “Signs” , “Unbreakable”, “The Sixth Sense” (N. Shyamalan), “Lucky Numbers” (N. Ephron), “Jesus’ Son” (A. MacLean), “National Treasure” (J. Turtletaub), “Invincible” (E. Core), “Rocky Balboa” (S. Stallone.)and M. Night Shyamalan’s, “The Last Airbender” , Peter Jackson’s “The Lovely Bones,” and F. Gary Gray’s “Law Abiding Citizen, and the recently released “How Do You Know” (James Brooks) and “Limitless” (Neil Burger). She has also cast for the CBS-TV series Cold Case and FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Independent films she has cast include The Woodsman and Shadowboxer. Diane also works as a production consultant to independent filmmakers and donates her services to student filmmakers in the Philadelphia area. She has served on the Board of Directors of the Screen Actors Guild and is an active member of the Association of Independent Commercial Producers, the Philadelphia Independent Film and Video Association and the Media Communications Association. She is the 2008 Lew Klein Award Winner. Before life as a casting director, Diane was an actor and director herself, appearing in over 25 regional and touring shows for the stage and has performed in films such as “Dead Poets Society” and “Two Plus One”. Diane has also served on the Board of Directors of the Screen Actors’ Guild and is an active member of Pennsylvania Film Industry Association. Diane is a graduate of Temple University’s Department of Theatre and is proud to be a member of two “Halls of Fame”: Temple University’s and her high school, St. Hubert’s. Gary Thompson Philadelphia Daily News Film Critic Gary Thompson was named movie reviewer for the Philadelphia Daily News in 1987, following a short career as a reporter covering business and economic development for the Daily News, Philadelphia Business Journal, and Pittsburgh Business Times. In 2000, he won the national first prize for criticism from the American Society of Sunday and Features Editors, and has also been honored by the Keystone Press Association and the Society of Professional Journalists. His work has also appeared in the New York Observer and Chicken Soup for the Soul. Mark David Rosenthal Screenwriter, Producer, Director Mark David Rosenthal, a graduate of Temple University, the University of Vermont and the University of the Pacific (D.A. in Medieval Studies) has been a highly respected screenwriter in the Hollywood studio system for close to thirty years. He is a voting member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences. His career has been featured in TALES FROM THE SCRIPT: 50 HOLLYWOOD SCREENWRITERS SHARE THEIR STORIES (Harpercollins, book and DVD) and in WHY WE WRITE: 25 TOP SCREENWRITERS SHARE THEIR STORIES (Sillman-James Press). Among his latest project, with co-writer Lawrence Konner, is THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE (Disney). His credits also include: MONA LISA SMILE (Sony), TIM BURTON’S PLANET OF THE APES (Fox), FLICKA (Fox 2000), FOR LOVE OR MONEY (Universal), THE JEWEL OF THE NILE (Fox), SUPERMAN IV (Warners), and STAR TREK VI (Paramount), MIGHTY JOE YOUNG (Disney), THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES (Fox), DESPERATE HOURS (MGM) and MERCURY RISING (Universal) along with others. In addition to his active career in the film world, he has lectured extensively at film classes, seminars and universities. He is also on the faculty at TEMPLE UNIVERSITY. From Temple to Hollywood: The Life of a Screenwriter’ Students last week heard an upfront, insider’s view of working in Hollywood from writer, director, producer and Temple alumnus Mark Rosenthal. Rosenthal, whose film credits include Mighty Joe Young (1998), Planet of the Apes (2001), The In Crowd (1988), Sometimes They Come Back and Mona Lisa Smile, shared with students his thoughts on the ups and downs of success, the hard realities of choosing projects, and the lifecycle of a screenplay once it enters the studio.
