Business of the Year: Fred LoBue Jr.
Woodlake High School Foundation
Spring2008
Business of the Year:
The Woodlake office of Valley Business Bank and
staff have roots in the community that run deep.
The Woodlake office of Valley Business Bank employs a group
of seven individuals. Five out of the seven employees are Woodlake
High School Alumni, as is VBB board member, Fred LoBue of
LoBue Bros. Linda Wood - Customer Service Manager, Class
of 1971; Rudy Garcia – Financial Service Representative, Class
of 1979; and
their Senior Customer Service Representatives,
Tammy Hudson, Irene Guerrero Bennett, Class of 1965; Becky
Chavez Baker, Class of 1975, Carrie Harrison, and Deanna McMahon Paredez, Class of 1992.
Linda Wood has been an active member of the Woodlake Lady Lions Club for the last fifteen years, especially
around rodeo time. She and the other Lady Lions spend much time and energy making sure that the event is a
huge success! She has also donated the saddle for the rodeo for the last 3 years on behalf of Valley Business Bank.
Rudy Garcia and Tammy Hudson have embraced several elderly customers, assisting them in making doctor appointments,
picking up prescriptions, and even serving them a hot meal during the holidays. Rudy is active in the Woodlake Chamber of
Commerce; for the last 12 years he has chaired several events including the annual Woodlake Car Show. The Woodlake staff
of Valley Business Bank is honored to have been awarded the “2008 Business of the Year” and we are very proud to be part
of the community! Valley Business Bank was established in 1996; we are a full-service commercial banking institution
that has been serving the financial needs of its friends and neighbors for 13 years. We have a Passion for Excellence!

Fred LoBue Jr.
I was born on November 4th 1940 in Porterville, CA. to Fred LoBue (Sr.)
and Mary LoBue. Their home was in an orange grove near Lindsay, where
my dad and his brothers grew and packed oranges. . I attended Paloma
School, among the last of the two room brick school houses in the area,
from 1st through 5th grades, at which time the school merged with Woodlake
Elementary. I entered W.U.H.S. in 1954, graduating in 1958 while there I
served as Junior Class President and Student Body President my senior year.
After high school I attended College of the Sequoias and San Jose State
University, graduating with a BS degree in Industrial Management in 1962. I
returned to working in the family citrus business until I was drafted in the
Fall of 1963. After almost 2 years at Ft. Lewis, Washington, where I worked
in a clerical position at post headquarters, I returned home in the fall of 1965 to begin my career full time in the citrus business.
As orange groves were being pulled out of Southern California to make way for houses, etc. those farmers were moving up here to
the central valley and planting trees. The commercial packing business turned out to be a very successful enterprise. Our company
grew from about 400,000 (55lb.) boxes in 1965 to over 4 million today, only 10% of which is from our own family’s orange groves.
On the personal side, I moved to Lindsay after getting out of the service and lived there for 15 years. I married Linda Mosebar (WUHS 1967)
in 1969. We had 3 children, all born in the 70’s. After we divorced in 1982, I met and subsequently married Donna Dungan Jarvis in 1987, a
widow with one son. For us, life HAS been lovelier the 2nd time around. I moved into my parents’home inVisalia in 1983, after my Dad’s passing.
In my younger years, particularly when I lived in Lindsay, I was involved in a number of community
activities, such as the Lindsay Jaycees, school district advisory committees, and the Lindsay City Planning
Commission. I truly enjoyed my years in Woodlake and think of the people I knew there most fondily.
Have you included the Woodlake High School Foundation in your Will or Trust?
Jana Johnson Spade
My name is Jana Johnson Spade and I
graduated from W.U.H.S. in the class of
1981. I am one of four children of the
Jerry and Joan Johnson clan of Three
Rivers. Along with Jeff, Jim and Julie,
we spent many hours on the road between
Three Rivers and Woodlake.
Growing up, my family owned and
operated the Lazy J Motel. I place a high
value on the work ethic and experience my
parents provided for us and you have only
to ask our children about the recurring
lecture regarding them being fortunate
enough to only have a couple of toilets to
clean on Saturday mornings..
After graduation from W.U.H.S., I
went on to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo
and graduated with a degree in Business
Administration and a minor in Accounting.
I went to work for Ernst & Young in Los
Angeles and went on to earn my Masters
in Taxation at the University of Southern
California. I worked in public accounting
in LA for four years before I met my
future husband Tim (of Santa Maria) who
was going to school in Chicago. I was
able to transfer to Chicago and work there
for eight years and move into a position of
Senior Manger.
While we were in Chicago, I started on
my biggest success to date, that of raising
three children. Two of our children Trevor
and Zach were born in Chicago and than
we all packed it up and came home.
We had a third child, Brittany when we
returned and found life with little ones
to be much easier when Grandma and
Grandpa resided in the same state.
I work part-time now at two firms in
Visalia - Rauber & Johnson and Gilman,
and, Harris & Travioli. Accounting has
been a wonderful career for me and it has
allowed me to have a well paying part
time job while fulfilling a full-time role as
wife and mother.

Currently I am the owner of Capstone
Financial a financial planning and
insurance services firm.
I have been in the Financial/
insurance business since 1989 when
recruited by New York Life. I worked
as an agent and sales manager for New
York Life until 1995 at which time I
decided to form my own company
called Valley Financial Group.
Valley Financial was a success
and in June of 2000 we opened a
Sacramento location. I relocated my
family to the Sacramento area at that
time to head up operations in the new
location.
I attended Woodlake High School
from 1979-1982 and was involved in
many school activities. I’m probably
most remembered for my success in
high school swimming medaling in
multiple events at section/valley finals.
After High School I attended COS
for two years again competing in both
Water Polo and swimming and was
awarded “Junior College All State”
honors. In 1984 I was accepted to
Cal State Univ. Sacramento or “Sac
State” where I majored in Science
and continued to swim achieving Div.
II All-American status in multiple
events. In 1987 I earned my BA
degree in Environmental studies with
a minor in Biological sciences.
I am married to “Kim” for almost 20
years and we have four children 8 thru
16 yrs of age. I enjoy being involved
in my kids’ activities, spending time at
our Lake Tahoe cabin, serving in my
local church, and continuing to swim
in “masters” competitions.

Class of 1973! It doesn’t seem that
long ago but reality sets in and it really
has been thirty-six years since I graduated
from WUHS. After two years at College
of Sequoias, I went to UCSB.
At UCSB my major was Aquatic
Biology and I academically struggled in
the major classes. During my senior year
at UCSB my friend suggested that maybe
I was in the wrong major, he was an
accounting major so he convinced me to
take some accounting classes to see how
I liked them. Since I was close to getting
my degree in Aquatic Biology I finished at
UCSB then went to Fresno State to obtain
my accounting credits.
After two years at Fresno State I got
a job with a local CPA firm. I became a
partner and am now a sole practitioner
located in Visalia. Being a sole practitioner
demands that you have knowledge in all
areas.
I strongly believe in giving back and
being involved in the community. I have
been to many WUHS career days. During
one of these presentations I met a fellow
presenter, Ana Carretero. I was impressed
with her and my firm hired her. I have
been on the following Board of Directors:
The Creative Center, The Creative
Center Foundation, Tulare County
Japanese American Citizen League,
Central Valley Chapter of the California
Restaurant Association, Visalia Education
Foundation, and the El Diamante High
School Miner Foundation.
Along the way I married Gayle Suveda
also class of 1973 which makes high
school reunions easy. We have two
children, Jennifer who is in her fourth
year at UC Davis, her major is Exercise
Biology and Brian who is in his second
year at Cal Poly – San Luis Obispo, his
major is in Industrial Engineering.

Currently in 2009 I am
employed as a branch manager for the
Educational Employees Credit Union
in Visalia, Ca. Through these years as
a Banker I have had the privilege of
participating in various community
organizations such as the Optimist
Club, Kiwanis Organization while at
the same time supporting youth groups,
foundations, educational systems, and
programs.
1972 was a good but small
class for W.U.S.H we were small in
quantity but high in quality as students
and athletes, that year the Tigers were
Divisional Champions in baseball
and lost in the quarter finals to Mt.
Whitney High School in pursuit of a
Valley Championship I was selected
to the 1972 East All stars. During my
four years at W.U.H.S I participated in
4 years of athletics, baseball, football,
and wrestling.
Along the way I was voted a
couple of titles my senior year and I
will always remember my teachers
and coaches, for they all contributed
to my forming as a young adult.
After high school I attended
The College of Sequoias and Cal Poly
San Luis Obispo then returned to the
Visalia to begin my banking career.
It gives me great “Tiger Pride” that I
was one of the chosen alumni to be
featured for the W.U.H.S Foundation
Newsletter. I also have taken great
pride as a professional to have have
a banking relationship with many of
my friends, teachers and coaches from
Woodlake at this institution. Thank
you so much.
\
I was born in Exeter in 1942 and moved
to Woodlake in 1945. I attended Woodlake
schools and graduated from Woodlake
High in 1960. During high school I was
active in baseball, basketball, and many
other school activities. I was a member
of the Future Farmers of America all four
years holding officer positions in two of
those four years.
After graduating from Woodlake high I
moved on to COS earning an AA degree
in Agricultural Science. During the last
semester at COS I was drafted into the
Army serving a two year stint and spending
most of that time in Germany. I enrolled
in the winter quarter at Cal Poly San Luis
Obispo and graduated with a Bachelor of
Science degree in Agricultural Business
Management in 1968.
In 1968 I began my career in banking
starting as a management trainee with
Security Pacific National Bank. In 1988
I was named manager of the Bank’s
Agricultural Appraisal Services. At that
time I was named Senior Vice President
for agricultural appraisal services with
offices throughout the Western United
States.
Along the way I have been an active
participant in the community, serving as
Past President of the Woodlake Rotary
club, past Chair and one of the founding
directors of the Woodlake Union High
School Foundation, Advisor/Director to
the California/Arizona Cotton Growers
Association, and a member of the Central
Valley Chapter of Agricultural Lenders
Society. I am still a loyal supporter of the
Woodlake High School Union foundation
I am married to Susan, also a past 1970
graduate of Woodlake High. Between the
two of us we have 4 boys: Dennis my
oldest, Emmet, my youngest, Josh, Susan’
oldest . Sean, Susan’s youngest;
Larry Espinoza was recently married
and is now settling in his first home in
Visalia, California.
Larry is employed by the Fresno County
Federal Credit Union where he serves his
role as Junior Financial Advisor.
Larry Graduated from WUHS in 2002
and began his college career at College
of the Sequoia’s where he completed his
general education studies. He transferred
to Fresno State in 2005 to complete his
degree in Business Administration. In
2007, Larry graduated from Fresno State
with a degree in Business AdministrationFinance Option.
Outside of his regular job, you will find
Larry hanging out at Luis’ Nursery on
the weekends with his new family. Aside
from that, he enjoys spending time with
his wife and playing fetch with his dog.
His hobbies include playing basketball,
golf, and fishing with his friends.
Larry enjoyed playing sports for WUHS.
He played football, golf, and basketball.
We are going through one of the toughest
financial markets in history. Larry spends
his days educating and guiding investors
to help them reach their financial goals.
He believes that financial markets will
remain volatile in 2009 and will show
signs of stabilizing sometime

Reflecting on my life then and now, it
couldn’t be more different. I don’t get
much of a chance to watch hometown
football games, smell fresh cut grass just
as softball season begins, or stop to hear
the crickets and see millions of stars in
the evening sky. Instead, there’s always a
humming sound of cars and sirens, nights
are never truly dark. Most of all, I miss
the sunsets, it’s not quite as peaceful to
watch the sun set over high-rise buildings. At age 17, it’s rare that a kid feels an
overwhelming sense of hubris and that’s
probably why it’s still etched in my
memory. But, it came over me, as I walked
onto Stanford’s campus for the first time. I
graduated with honors in Political Science
and double majored in Economics. My
thesis was written on Women and Women
of Color in Politics. Funny, I had no
idea that one day I’d actually work for
one of the women I wrote about, Senator
Feinstein.
After exploring all the corners of
Stanford, graduation day came. When
I was handed that diploma…. I wasn’t
quite sure what to do. I was supposed to
do something good with it – I knew that
part, but I just didn’t quite know what that
meant. Clearly, I still had a lot of learning
and growing up to do, and my journey to
make the world a better place wasn’t as
easy as I thought.
I started my search in Financial Services
on Wall Street (Goldman, Sachs, & Co). I
managed money for families, foundations,
and organizations that had more than $25
million in their bank account – yes, $25
million
After about three and a half years of
growing the biggest international business
on the West Coast for retail clients, I
started to ask once again. Is this what I
left Woodlake to do? Is this why I went
to Stanford? The following year at Harvard Business
School, I earned my MBA and also became
a Red Sox fan by marriage. That means,
I married a city kid from Boston (and yes,
I did ask him to marry me on the jumbo
tran at a Red Sox game. Luck would have
it; they broke their 86 year streak and won
the World Series that year. I keep telling
Patrick Brannelly, everything changed
when I became a fan.
After a year in northern California, I
received a call to join Senator Feinstein’s
office. The Senate is a pretty small world
and it didn’t take long for me to meet
Senator Stabenow, the first woman elected
to the United States Senate from the state
of Michigan. She is from a small town,
had an appreciation for rural America,
and has never, to this day, lost sight of her
roots. It was no surprise that we hit it off
immediately! I have been with her for
over three years and have been promoted
as her Chief of Staff.
Today, our issues are more complex than
ever, particularly in the financial industry.
The days of simple currency trading are
gone. Instead, we are in an interconnected,
global, and extremely reactive financial
system. In my opinion, this is our first
true test of a global economic challenge
that will require a new kind of solution
– cooperative, global, and much more
comprehensive than anything we’ve seen
in the past.
This moment, this time, this challenge
is exactly why I left Woodlake. I can help
to find solutions to the biggest problems
our nation is experiencing. So, as one of
the youngest Chiefs of Staff and the very
first Latina Chief of Staff in United States
Senate – I’ve seemed to find my place
to make a difference. Now, it’s time to
work…. it’s time to give back.

Letter
from
the
President
We are in the midst of winter, a time
when it looks like not much is going on in
the agricultural fields and orchards around
us. But these are still busy days for farmers
and ranchers; their work goes on behind the
scenes and sometimes, under the ground.
Like them, your WHS Foundation Board
of Directors never stops looking for and
planning new ways to support Woodlake
High School and the youth of Woodlake.
Because of the financial uncertainty
of the times, we cut back on many
items before planning our budget in
July. We found ourselves cutting back
again in January, revising our already
skeletal budget, as one of our jobs is
to be good stewards of the funds we
have been given. Your gift helps us
provide scholarships for the outstanding
group of students in the Class of 2009.
We have some exciting events ahead!
Senior Scholarship Interviews will begin
soon. Also coming up is our Spring
Dinner, Friday, May 1, 2009. We hope
you will attend, enjoy the delicious
dinner, have a great time visiting with
friends and neighbors, and take part in
the fabulous Silent Auction! Tickets may
be obtained from any Foundation Board
member. Please consider purchasing a
ticket as a donation, even if you cannot
attend, or pass your ticket(s) on to
someone else who might need to become
acquainted with the WHS Foundation!
Happy New Year 2009!

Note
Woodlake High School has many
positive things that should be celebrated.
In our little corner of the world, we
continue to provide high quality education
complimented by a multitude of extra
curricular activities.
Our students continue to achieve at
high levels. We have seniors who have
already been accepted to the University
of Southern California and Fresno State.
Students are also enrolling in COS classes
held on our campus both at night and
during the regular school day. Mock
Trial and Academic Decathlon set the
bar high earning medals and widespread
acknowledgements in their respective
Tulare County Competitions.
And what about the arts? The drama
club has again brought culture to WHS
with one act plays this spring. The band
program has dazzled audiences and still
managed a trip to Disneyland where they
recorded a song to be played in a cartoon.
Our talented artists never cease to amaze
us all. We again have representation in
the Tulare County Farm Bureau’s Annual
Calendar.
As you can see, we really do have much
to celebrate. The rich traditions that have
given life to the phrases “Tiger Pride”
and “Once a Tiger, Always a Tiger” are
alive and well but we are not without our
challenges.
Our Measure “C” projects will be
delayed due to a funding freeze at the state
level. But rather than rush to complete
projects that are not “Second to None”, we
are taking our time and will move forward
only when the funds become available.
We have completed the new classroom
at the Bravo Lake campus and work on
the JV Baseball and JV Softball fields will
likely begin this summer.
Please feel free to visit, call or e-mail
myself or staff. We appreciate your
support and enjoy hearing from alumni
and Tiger fans alike.
Respectfully,
Tim Hire
Athletics Update
Alley Reeves
Kohl Berry
Two of the top female athletes to
graduate from Woodlake High School last
year are currently playing and doing very
well on teams in nearby colleges.
Alley Reeves, last year’s MVP
for basketball, is a starting player on
the basketball team at College of the
Sequoias. On January 31, 2009, she set
a new school landmark of a triple / triple.
She scored 30 points and grabbed 30
rebounds. According to school officials,
no one at C.O.S., man or woman, has ever
accomplished this. Most of her former
WHS teammates and coaches were at that
game to cheer her on.
Kohl Berry is a starting player on the
new California State, Fresno Lacrosse
team. This is a new sport for Fresno State,
added just this year. Lacrosse claims to be
the “fastest game on two feet.” The team
features players from freshmen through
seniors. Kohl is a Defender, not surprising
since she was the star goalie for the WHS
soccer team. So watch for Kohl, #5, to be
in the record books!
These teams post their schedules on
line. Wouldn’t it be fun to catch either of
them in a game or a match if you happened
to be nearby?
Help Wanted
If you ever had the desire to
help a needy student, now is the
time! With the economic problems
and cutbacks to schools, this year’s
graduating class faces hard times.
Joined by nearly 30 dedicated
members from the community, the WHS
Foundation Scholarship Committee will
begin to interview local scholarship
applicants on March 20, 2009. The
committee tries not only to match
qualified students with available funds,
5
but also tries to find resources that
might not be apparent to the student.
The WHS Foundation is dedicated to
helping both our students and our school
succeed and continue to be the best. Our
view is that our students are our hope
for the future of not only our community
but also for our nation. Their continued
education is in all our best interests. If
you would like to help the Foundation,

Nutrition, and a minor in Education
in 1988. She received her teacher
education from Fresno Pacific University
in 1990, and now holds a Master of
Science in Education with emphasis in
Administration and Supervision from
Fresno State. While at UC Davis, Leslie
was the Ski Club President, a member
of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority
and a Health Advocate volunteer.
Leslie is a member and past-President

honorees, which recognizes outstanding
citizenship in youth grades 3 – 11.
She has been recognized as a
Distinguished Kiwanian, was Teacher

Honored Woman of the Year in 2006.
Married in 1970 to Cornelio Ortiz,
Frances has five children: Flora Robles,
Mary Helen Robles Runnels, Lupe Robles
Piñon, Irene Robles Teraoka and Cornelio
Ortiz, Jr. She has 20 grandchildren and
three great-grandchildren.
Not content to sit on the sidelines,
Frances has been involved in Woodlake
as a City Council Member; she has been
Vice Mayor and Mayor. She has served
as a Board Member to the Family Health
Clinic, Self-Help, and the Woodlake
Elementary School. She is a member of
the League of Mexican American Women
and the Leperas (Naughty Ladies Club).

and the Mexican American League.
Frances is a member of St. Francis Cabrini
Catholic Church. She has worked to get
scholarships for Self Help Enterprises.
Frances has also been an umpire for Little
League
Mike likes the feel of a small
community. Because of Sally’s
position at WHS, he knows most of
the people, their children and even
grandchildren. He has enjoyed
seeing kids grow up and become
successful. There’s no place on
earth like a small community when
a crisis or personal loss occurs in
a family; you see the community
respond and offer their support.
The Paces have two children:
Ryan & Natalie. Ryan is married to
Reina and they have two children:
Seth and Corinne, who love to
come to Grampa Mike’s “Running
P Ranch.”
Our honoree would like to
challenge us to get involved and
work together through the service
clubs and schools to make this
community an even better place.
Have a goal, and a vision; be willing
to step out of your comfort zone.
There’s lots of work to be done –
and when it comes time for the
“grunt work,” just call Mike Pace!
Lupe Robles Piñon truly embodies
the “spirit” of Woodlake. For one
thing, she was born “lucky.” When
she arrived on January 3, she was the
first baby girl born at Mesa Lutheran
Hospital in 1965! Her parents weren’t
even charged for the hospital or the
doctor. Secondly, if you have attended
Woodlake Youth Football in the last
eight years, you’ve seen this crazy
lady in her cheerleader outfit, stirring
up the crowd. That’s Lupe! Folks call
SPIRIT
Award:
Guadalupe Piñon
her “cheerleader” and “Mama Piñon.”
Her two sons, Tyson and Lorenzo
aren’t embarrassed by their mom; they
are proud of her Tiger Spirit! She loves
living in Woodlake because of all the
people, sports and pride in this town.
She qualifies as a sports “fanatic.” She
loves to see and play sports; she also
7
loves music and dancing
In Lupe’s own words: “I never
served in any branch of the military,
due to my weight. Thank God, as The
Woodlake Cheerleader I didn’t have a
weight or size limit, or I would never
have been one. In 1996 I was in a
serious car accident and I had much
support from my family, friends and
community. And even though I don’t
have the sexiest legs anymore, I am
still considered one Hot Cheerleader
Our Foundation Goals
