ElderCare Partners Brings Peace of Mind
Our Mission:
To improve the quality of
life of older adults in the
greater Dallas area through
protection, eldercare,
advocacy, volunteerism, and
employment services.
It was pure coincidence that Lori Ashmore
Peters, an attorney for the Satarino family, just
happened to also volunteer for the Guardianship Program at The Senior Source and was
familiar with its new geriatric care management
program, ElderCare Partners. In her dealings
with the Satarino family, Lori had begun to observe that several issues needed to be addressed,
not the least of which was the care of the 92
year-old mother, Maxine Satarino.
The Satarinos’ situation was typical in some
ways, and unique in others. Mrs. Satarino lived
in her own home but suffers from dementia and
Maxine Satarino, Lue Taff, and Virginia Satarino
other health issues. Of the five adult children,
only two daughters live in Dallas; the other daughter is in Houston and two sons live in Michigan. Both daughters in Dallas, however, are hearing impaired and one, 72 year-old Virginia, has
lived with her mother her entire life.
It was apparent to the family’s attorney — and to the rest of the family as well — since most
of the adult children live out of town, they needed an objective third-party licensed professional
to evaluate Mrs. Satarino’s living situation and quality of care. Lori contacted Lue Taff, ElderCare
Partners’ certified geriatric care manager, and asked her to look into the case. After speaking with
the family, Lue then met with Mrs. Satarino. Shortly thereafter, the family signed on with ElderCare Partners.
Lue discovered that because of Mrs. Satarino’s dementia, she clearly needed more assistance
during the day. Despite notes on the inside of the home reminding her not to let strangers in,

Senior Corps Programs Make a Difference on Martin Luther King Day
Dallas area Senior Corps staff and volunteers with our Foster Grandparent Program, RSVP, and Senior Companion Program, celebrated the 2012 MLK Day of
Service by serving breakfast to the families staying at Ronald McDonald House.
The 6:00 a.m. start time came early, but providing the comfort of a home cooked
meal to families facing some of life’s toughest challenges made it all worthwhile.
Nursing Home Ombudsman Program
The Senior Source, selected by the Junior League of Dallas to participate in the 201213 Community Program, was on hand recently for the JLD Annual Community
Volunteer Fair and Community Grant Presentation. During the presentation, JLD
announced the distribution of more than $1 million in funding and more
than 1100 volunteers to 40 local nonprofits for the coming year. JLD’s
generosity funds and provides volunteers for our Friendly Visitor Program,
(see sidebar story) part of the Nursing Home Ombudsman Program.
Junior League of Dallas provisional members
completed their Provisional Project at Williamsburg Village, a nursing home in DeSoto. They
planted flowers, painted the shower room (even
painting a mural free-hand), spent time visiting with the residents and playing games with
them, and in general, brought much-needed joy
and beauty into the lives of these older adults.

Yet after she began attending physician visits with Mrs.
Satarino, Lue learned of medical information about which
the family was unaware. It became apparent that the longterm plan needed to be put in action for Mrs. Satarino’s
well being.
Despite the fact that Mrs. Satarino wanted to stay
in her home, it just was not feasible for the family. Lue
located a room at one of ElderCare Partner’s suggested private pay nursing homes where she is receiving needed care,
She also found a suitable place for Virginia to live near her
mother.
Theresa Chandler, Mrs. Satarino’s daughter in Houston, believes her family could not have resolved all the
issues related to the care of her mother and sister without
the help of Lue and ElderCare Partners. “Our family had
multiple issues and circumstances to deal with and it all
seemed so overwhelming. But ElderCare Partners provided us with a service which was invaluable to our family.
Now we have our mom in a wonderful safe place and our
sister is on her way to a new life in her new place.”

The Senior Employment Program has
added a new event to its lineup of valuable
workshops, seminars and networking sessions. The Senior Success Series features
expert speakers and presenters on topics
related to job search strategies and techniques, skills enhancement, career transition and more.
In February, motivational speaker
and financial planner Fred Shlesinger
presented “Making Lemonade Out of Lemons: Effective Strategies for Job Seekers” and
both educated and entertained a packed room with his dynamic and humorous delivery.

The Charles C. Sprague Sage Society 2011
Dr. Tedd Mitchell, president of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, was the featured speaker at The Charles C. Sprague Sage Society 2011 Annual Member Dinner held at Brook Hollow Golf Club. Dr. Mitchell’s address
was entitled “Aging with Attitude.” The Sage Society was formed to provide
educational opportunities to its members on the issues and realities of an aging
America, while enhancing the lives of area older adults.

Diving Daredevils
As we reported last fall, our 50th anniversary celebration,
50 Over 50: Jump into Action, was a soaring success. Not
only did we exceed the number of skydivers we hoped to
recruit (the final count was 56), we achieved our goal of raising $50,000 to help support our programs and services. A
huge thanks to everyone involved in this memorable event including the weather gods - who provided a glorious day for
our over-50 daredevils to jump into action and a great crowd
of spectators to cheer them on!

David Miller, and closed with Karen Shuford introducing Lydia and
Dan Novakov. Proceeds from the luncheon totaled nearly $900,000
and will benefit the eight nonprofit programs of The Senior Source.
