McDevitt - Bishop McDevitt High School
Bishop McDevitt High School The Loyalist Winter 2013 Volume 26 The Annual Report Letter from the Alumni Association President To say your Alumni Association has been busy this past year would be a crowning understatement. It is hard to believe that we just celebrated our school’s 54tg Birthday with cupcakes for the entire school. The students also joined us in singing “Happy Birthday” to our Alma Mater at each lunch period. This time last year birthday celebrations were hardly at the forefront of any Archdiocesan high school. But last February, we were able to celebrate not only the saving of four of our sister schools, but also the change of organizational structure of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. The Faith in the Future Foundation ushers in a new era of growth and stability for bedrock Catholic high schools throughout the Philadelphia area. Our school is excited about being a part of the future of Catholic schools in Philadelphia. The Alumni Association year also saw us form a successful Scholarship Committee and distribute our annual scholarships to the children of our alumni. Last Spring, we held a very successful Mentor Day in which 40 alums returned to speak to current McDevitt students about the career path that McDevitt helped them to achieve. In March, we had a fantastic Spring Fling at the school that brought a night of dinner and dancing for nearly 150 of our alumni. In April, we honored three more alumni by conferring upon them our school’s greatest honor-- induction into the Hall of Fame for Bishop McDevitt High School. In May, the Association inducted 178 new members from the Class of 2012, and your Association was proudly present at both the Baccalaureate Mass and graduation at Arcadia University for this exceptional class. In October, we hosted one of the best annual golf outings in years which helped to raise money for Alumni Association events throughout the year, as well as our scholarship program for the children of McDevitt alumni now attending our school. The legacy lives on in a big way on Royal Avenue. And in November we held our annual Memorial Mass remembering those among our alumni who left this world much too soon. However, the biggest achievement of the year by our alumni is to give us our new President, Steve Finley, from the Class of 1969. In just five short months, he has already begun to steer our school on a course that keeps a sharp eye on the future, but also bring back many of the great McDevitt successes of the past to ensure our school is the first choice of 8th Grade students throughout the area. The vibe inside the building is an exciting atmosphere of success and spirit that only a graduate from the decade of the 60’s can bring, and that many of us can remember with soul warming fondness. While the future at McDevitt could not look brighter, also know that securing our future is the role of every alum. Our students attending McDevitt need your help. That means come back to McDevitt and be a mentor. That means come back to McDevitt and volunteer your time and talents. That means come back and represent your class on the Alumni Board. You will agree that each McDevitt graduate is unique. Wherever you go, you will meet a fellow alum, and instantly feel a kinship to that person. That is legacy, and for the legacy to continue in that unique way, you need to contribute our school’s greatest asset: You. If you want to help at McDevitt, call me at 215.901.9333, and I will be glad to help you come back to your future. I stayed home, I helped with chores, I talked for hours, all with my mom. Never did I think that I would grow a set of huge wings and fly off to South Korea this past summer. While I’d always dreamed of traveling, I never really thought I would do it, at least, not without my family. This summer, however, I was one of fifty American students chosen for the National Security Language Initiative for Youth program funded by the U.S. Department of State to study in Seoul, South Korea. The application took hours and the wait for results was painfully long, but when I found out I was picked from over a thousand semi-finalists alone, I was stunned. Through the program and its international associates, I was placed with a loving host family. My father and two sisters were all fluent in Korean, Chinese, and English, but my host mother knew only Korean. Our broken conversations and moments of understanding are some of my most cherished memories, each day having given us little blessings in disguise. While there, I studied Korean at one of South Korea’s top colleges: Sogang University. There, we were sorted into classes and learned Korean intensively for six weeks. The classes spanned from 1:00pm to 5:00pm everyday excluding weekends, leaving the rest of our time to discover Seoul for ourselves. 4 We were helped along the way by the staff members of the program as well as our own support groups of three or four people. Each group had a supporter, a Korean college student who spent Tuesday and Thursday mornings with us to help teach us more Korean as well as experience Korean culture at historical places. My own group was just three people; myself, my friend Megan, and our supporter Dongchan. We explored Seoul together and grew very close. I’ve also found some of my greatest friends in Korean students I met while in Seoul. We hung out often after we American students would finish school, meeting around the university in Sinchon or in other populated areas of the city like Gangnam or Hongdae. We would walk for hours together just talking, half in Korean half in English, about everything and anything. They were our best tour guides and friends. Other American students from the program are some of my closest friends as well. It’s strange thinking that now my best friends live in Nevada, Texas, and Saudi Arabia and I can’t just see them in class or to walk with them by the Cheonggyecheon, a stream that became one of our favorite places to talk. Many of the staff members told us that culture shock could be bad, but reverse culture shock is worse. They were right. It’s been difficult adjusting back into my routine here in America, but I don’t regret the struggle it is. My experience in South Korea has made me so much stronger and more confident that I’m ready to take on this, my senior year at McDevitt. It’s not going to be easy, but I’m glad to be back and taking on the world. Soon, I’ll be applying to universities and hoping for scholarships, but I’ll also be wishing for something else: another trip to South Korea. Hopefully, with a little hard work and dedication, I can find my way back to Seoul for another year of experiencing the rich culture I’ve fallen in love with. My Country By Gabe Dwyer ‘13 Bancroft Hall United State Naval Academy James and Gabe Dwyer - Herndon Monument United States Naval Academy Cadet Honor Code United State Military Academy During the beginning of this summer, I had the opportunity to spend a week at two of the finest institutions in the world, The United States Naval Academy and The United States Military Academy at West Point. I attended their Summer Seminars. The seminars are an opportunity for a candidate to experience academy life, and an opportunity for the academies to assess the candidate. From June 2 to June 7, I slept, swam, ate, and ran on the very same facilities utilized by the Navy Midshipmen during the academic year. Each day consisted of four classes that I chose prior to my arrival in Annapolis. The eight classes that I took were martial arts, mathematics, ship design, physics, chemistry, ship simulation, damage control, and systems and weapons. Day 5 was military day; a day of intense activities beginning with a morning swim starting around 7am. Other activities throughout the day included water PT in the Severn River, running the E-course (endurance course), and classic log PT. The day finished with a replica I-Day (Induction Day). Overall the experience at the Naval Academy was great. I returned home for a day to take an exam at McDevitt, and off to West Point the next day. From June 9 to June 15, I walked the same grounds and halls as the Cadets from West Point that include Douglas MacArthur, Ulysses S. Grant, and Robert E. Lee. The Seminar at West Point was very similar to that of the Naval Academy. Each day was high speed and action packed. There I took one major class each day. These classes included; Arabic, Mathematics, and Systems Engineering. Day 6 at West Point was our military day. Activities included running the confidence course, the leadership course, fighting in the martial arts pit, running the speed course and learning about combat engineering. The experience at West Point was definitely one I will remember for the rest of my life. The two experiences had their similarities and differences. For example, The Naval Academy is in the heart of the capital of Maryland, while West Point takes its historical strategic position high in the mountains of New York on the Hudson River. At each seminar, candidates took the CFA or Candidate Fitness Assessment and slept and ate in the same facilities as students attending the academies. It was an extremely fast paced and intense way to start off the summer, and I would do it all over again if I could. I am honored to have been given the opportunity to attend both of these prestigious seminars, and hope to attend one of this institutions in the Fall. 5 In the News The Voices of Inspiration Award for Teaching Excellence, sponsored by Freedom Credit Union and the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit, recognizes teachers who exceed expectations in meeting their students’ needs. Mr. Horn, a 50 year teacher at McDevitt, was nominated for this award by his former student, Chris Seifert ‘04. “We all owe so much to Mr. Horn for his dedication, commitment to excellence, service to others, and incredible abilities both in and out of the classroom.” Mr. Horn was one of 23 teachers in Montgomery County to receive this recognition out of 645 total nominations. Congratulations, Mr. Horn! On Monday, November 12, Casey Carter, the newly appointed CEO of the Faith in the Future Foundation, visited Bishop McDevitt. While here, he met with Principal, Mary Kirby, and President, Steve Finley ‘69 to discuss the academic programs of McDevitt. He also toured the facilities and was very impressed with both students and faculty. He is committed now more than ever to help each Archdiocesan high school excel and grow. Jane Metzler ‘73 was one of five receipients of the Distinguish Graduate Award at a ceremony on October 11, 2012 hosted by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. The other recipients included; Tim Chambers, Director/Screenwriter, The Mighty Macs (Cardinal O’Hara); Gerard Cuddy, President and CEO of Beneficial Bank (Monsignor Bonner); James Hirschmann, Jr. CEO of Western Asset Management (Archbishop Wood); and Brother Richard Kestler, FSC, President of West Philadelphia Catholic High School (LaSalle). Jane was a proud member of McDevitt’s speech and debate teams and served as Class Chairman for three years. The confidence and knowledge she gained from her experiences in high school eventually lead to a successful career in broadcast journalism. She is currently an Anchor/Reporter for Fox News Radio in New York City. If you ask Christopher DiCamillo to name his favorite performance piece, he pauses. It isn’t an easy question, but DiCamillo is accustomed to searching his mind and heart for answers. His response, thoughtful and poignant, reflects the level of artistic sensibility and sophistication fostered by Immaculata’s music program. “A few pieces are close to me,” he said, “but one has stayed with me. The Chopin Etude in C minor, Opus 25, No. 12, the ‘Ocean Etude.’ I remember during a difficult time, after being awake all night, I was on back campus watching the sunrise while listening to that piece on my iPod, and it just hit home for me. The dissonance, the complexity... that Etude changed my life. I carry it with me wherever I go. It grows with me. As I change, it changes with me.” DiCamillo, a senior who will graduate in 2013 with a B.A. in music and an emphasis in performance, is no stranger to change, or dissonance, or complexity. His decision to pursue music was influenced in large part by his high school’s vice principal of academic affairs, Mr. Achuff. As a Diocesan Scholar, DiCamillo took some college music courses as a high school senior. “Mr. Achuff was very excited about my taking music classes, which shocked me. Here was a history teacher and administrator encouraging the arts, and I thought, ‘If he’s supporting this, there must be value here.’” When DiCamillo decided to apply to Immaculata, having been introduced to the school a couple of 8 years earlier when he participated in a piano competition, Achuff wrote his letter of recommendation. “I was accepted to IU very shortly after that, “ said DiCamillo. And not too long after that, Achuff passed away. “That letter was one of the last things he did for me,” said DiCamillo. “He was such a great man, and one of his last acts on earth was to get me into this school. There must be a reason I’m here.” DiCamillo entered Immaculata planning to become a music teacher and, though he enjoyed his classes and did well, he discovered during the required field work that being in control of a classroom presented some unanticipated challenges. “The kids were great and the teachers were great, but I learned that the classroom wasn’t quite the right fit for me.” The decision to switch to performance was one DiCamillo made after careful deliberation, and with the counsel of his professors and parents. “I feel the Bachelor of Arts degree fits me well. I can develop as a musician, as well as develop in other areas of my life. Immaculata’s performance concentration is unique. Because the school is small, I have been able to work very closely with the music faculty. These teachers do everything to make sure the material is understood, and that our learning experience is the best it can be. “In particular, the semester performance class gives musicians the chance to hear each other perform, think critically, and offer constructive feedback. Some learning environments are intoxicated with a competitiveness that aims only to break musicians. At Immaculata, the focus is on building them. The performance class gives students the experience they need to be comfortable in a musical setting, and in future professional settings. The closeness and friendship among the performance concentration students provides support, and motivates them to become all they can be at their instruments, and in their lives.” According to William Carr, DMA, IU professor of music and Steinway Artist, “We have a highlyskilled faculty in the applied music area, many of whom are active as soloists or with symphony orchestras. Ralph Sorrentino is a percussionist who has worked with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Dolores Ferraro has sung at The Met. Janet Ahlquist, a pianist, has performed in major recital halls, in addition to being a graduate of Juilliard and the Eastman School of Music. It makes a huge difference when performance students are taught by musical artists who are themselves actively performing.” Over the past few years, Carr and DiCamillo have forged a connection that DiCamillo struggles to put into words. “How do you describe the bond that exists between a teacher and student who have worked together to develop the art they both have a deep passion for? I have discovered so much about myself just by the time Dr. Carr invested in making sure I become the best person I can possibly be at the piano, and as an individual. When I came to college, I assumed I would have many experiences that would shape me as a person. What I didn’t expect was that God would send me someone so incredible to help me manage and learn from everything college has presented me with. I am so fortunate to have him as a teacher, mentor, and a friend.” Carr is equally admiring of DiCamillo and the progress he has made as a musician. “Chris is such a joy to teach, a pleasure to work with. To see him develop, to watch him coming along is just wonderful. He is a fine young man.” In terms of connections-a theme Carr has explored and developed in his own work as an expert consultant to the corporate world--DiCamillo is writing his senior colloquium paper on the connections between the world of music and the world of the gym. As unlikely as that link may sound, DiCamillo lives the truth of that synthesis. “If I don’t work out, I’m not productive at the piano,” he said. “When I was in high school, I would spend hours at the gym--along with my music, it was my other safe place of refuge. They both built me as a person.” As DiCamillo has learned in the classroom and at the piano bench, “There’s so much the arts can teach us about creativity and problem solving and hard work. When I’m giving piano lessons to a youngster, I’m not just teaching a set of hands, I’m teaching a person, showing them an analogous experience at the piano that they may be able to relate to their life.” DiCamillo quells any fears he might have about the future by remembering, “What do I have to worry about if I’m willing to work hard? My grandfather was an immigrant with a fifth-grade education, but he was always able to take care of his family because he was willing to work hard. That applies to the piano-to everything.” Immaculata’s Music Department, for example, is bearing the fruits of the hard work involved in the process of the University’s becoming an All-Steinway School. “It ‘s a great honor,” said DiCamillo, “and all the students benefit. Even non-music majors like to come in and see the pianos, see for themselves what this big investment was, and they enjoy it, too. Music has something to teach everyone. It’s a powerful thing.” “The world is full of hardships,” he noted. “In musical terms, that would be consonance and dissonance. You wouldn’t appreciate the consonance without the dissonance. Music gives us a creative and philosophical way of looking at life. It isn’t the only way, but it is a positive and powerful one. I feel as though it’s my calling to share that with the world.” Thanks to Immaculata, DiCamillo is prepared to do just that. 9 The Class of 2012 Recent college and university acceptances • 98% attending college and other postsecondary institutions. • 180 students received over $18 million in academic scholarships/grants • 99% of the graduates were accepted into their college/university of first choice. • A National Merit Semifinalist • 3 eagle Scouts Arcadia University Arizona State University Art Institute of Pittsburgh Barry University Boston University Bucknell University Carnegie Mellon University Catholic University of America Chestnut Hill College Columbia University DeSales University Drexel University Duquesne University Fairfield University Fordham University Georgetown University George Mason University Gwynedd-Mercy College Hofstra University Howard University Immaculata University La Salle University Lehigh University Northeastern University Parsons School of Design (NYC) Penn State University Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Philadelphia University Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Rider University Robert Morris University Rutgers University St. John’s University St. Joseph’s University Seton Hall University Shippensburg University Temple University University of Dayton University of Delaware University of Michigan University of Notre Dame University of Scranton University of Pennsylvania University of Pittsburgh University of Vermont Ursinus College United States Marine Corps United States Military Academy at West Point Villanova University West Chester University Widener University Xavier University Upcoming Events 10 Alumni Association Meeting March 5, 2013 6:30pm in the Board Room “Best of Philly Night” Hosted by the Parents Assoc.
