ummertime and the living is easy. Please join us at our next two Beach
Shabbats: July 20 and August 10. It is a beautiful way to usher in the
Sabbath and become more spiritual by interacting with the sand and the
sea.
The 67th Annual Anniversary Dinner Dance was spectacular. The Allegria
Hotel was warm and inviting. During the cocktail hour in the hotel lobby
overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, we were serenaded by the High School
Jazz Band conducted by Marino Bragino. They were so professional and
upbeat. We thought we were listening to a professional group.
The dinner was held in the ballroom which was elegant and glittering with
light and beauty. We danced and danced to the wonderful DJ – DJ
JazziGerri and participated in a silent auction. Special thank you’s to: Sy
Landsman who worked with the caterer at the Allegria, Steve Kolodny
who created the dinner dance journal, Mike Heller who got the dinner
dance committee started, Gary Meyer who donated all the invitations, and
Donna Hills who chaired the event and kept us all centered and on task.
We are most grateful to the sponsors of the dinner dance: Marty and
Lauren Kaminsky for donating the flowers in honor of Ruth Kaleko’s 90th
birthday, Martha and Irwin Lederer for supplying the music, and
Sisterhood for their generous check in support of the religious school. In
addition, I personally want to thank Neil Vogel for MC’ing the event and
Ricky Ehrlich for introducing the participants. Thank you to Dr. Jeff and
Bari Klirsfeld for being our honorees. Their hard work and dedication
were extraordinary! They did an awesome job!!
Unplugged, a musical event orchestrated by Cantor Katz, was a magical
night. Russell Goetz sang amazingly, alone and as a duet with the Cantor.
Their voices were soulful and moving, and complimented each other in a
fabulous way. Shelby Applebaum sang in her very special style as well.
Her solos were very unique, beautiful, and memorable. Lucas Klirsfeld
on the sax and Jesse Klirsfeld on the trumpet were an amazing accompaniment for the vocalists. In addition, Daniel Feldman played his acoustic
guitar, solo. All of the volunteer musicians were Temple Emanu-El
Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. We were all kvelling with pride. Once again, special
appreciation goes out to Bari and Jeff who were instrumental in making
this concert happen.
Thank you to all of the members of our congregation and their friends and
families for supporting our temple. Have a happy and safe summer.

hat a beautiful Temple Emanu-El
Dinner Dance, held at the new
Allegria Hotel in Long Beach. It was a
top drawer affair, with over one hundred
guests in attendance. The spirit was fabulous. The evening was moderated by
Neil Vogel, who did a splendid job outlining where the congregation is at, and
where it aspires to go. Bari and Jeff
Klirsfeld were outstanding honorees.
Let us build on the success of this affair
and go forward to build a bigger,
stronger Temple Emanu-El for our children, our youth, and our entire congregation. Kadema – Go forward – Have a

Ca nto r’s N otes
By now many of you are aware that I will be leaving Temple
Emanu-El. For those of you who did not know this, I regret
that you are first getting this message from the Bulletin and
not from me directly. Our decision to leave Temple was not
an easy one. In fact, for Julia and I it was one of the toughest decisions we have had to make. Over the last 6 1/2
years we have become very close with many of you as congregants and friends. You have treated us with kindness,
generosity and appreciation many times over. We are grateful to have gotten to know so many of you.
I personally want to thank everyone for all the support and
love you have given us. I am confident that under the current leadership Temple Emanu-El will continue to grow and
thrive providing the community of Long Beach with ruach
and the best spiritual experience Reform Judaism has to
offer. I want to thank Rabbi Hermann for his being a beacon
of care and healing for the community. I have learned a
tremendous amount from him, and appreciate his being the
model he has been.
We will not be moving out of Long Beach, as we love it here
and feel there is no greater place to live on Long Island.
Please do not hesitate to call or reach out if there is ever
anything I may be able to help with.
Julia, Rayna, Hanna and I wish only blessings and abundance for all of you.
B’shalom,
Cantor Katz

Getting Ready for the New Year
Sisterhood
T
he school year is over. The summer is here. Let us all
have some fun, but let us not forget that the Temple is
still here . On July 20th we have our next “Beach
Shabbat”. Bring a picnic dinner and join us at 6:30PM, at
the Neptune entrance to the beach for the wind-down of a
very busy school year. Services will follow on the sand,
under the stars, as you listen to the roar of the surf! What
a way to end the busy year!
Sisterhood held its paid-up dinner catered by Da Vinci’s
on Long Beach Road in Island Park. We also celebrated
the longevity of several of our members. Along with
good food we enjoyed the entertainment of professional
ballroom dance competitor, Ken Braggelwirth. A great
time was held by all.
Our “game night” is continuing through the summer.
Enjoy the company of friends, meet new ones and cool off
with a light dinner and a game of cards or Mah Jagg.
Scrabble or Monopoly anyone! Gentlemen you are more
than welcome. Form your own table for poker, gin
rummy or whatever else you would like to play. Watch

egend has it that a man went for a ride one day with
his 5 year old daughter in the back seat. After hitting
gridlock traffic he began to slam on the wheel, curse and
complain loudly. Just then - out of nowhere- the little girl
blurts out: “ Daddy, it doesn’t make sense to complain
about the traffic, because we’re part of it! “
At one time or another we have all complained about the
Temple - one aspect or another. But does that make sense if
we are all part of it?
Brotherhood Shogun dinner will break for the Summer
and resume in September.
Our next Brotherhood meeting is June 26th @ 7:30 in the
sisterhood room- then we will break for July and August.
Mrs. Cabrera treated Mrs. Katz's Grade 3 to a pizza and juice
party for having donated the more money to Keren Ami than
all of the other grades combined. There money will be donated
to the North Shore Animal Shelter, Israel Guide Dogs, Doctors
Without Borders and Israel Special Kids.

-John Boshoven, Jewish Counselor-
I
hope that you are all having a wonderful and healthy summer vacation. Shortly you will be receiving
information on our Fall Open House
and Registration for the 2012-2013
school year. If you have any questions
or concerns with the materials that you
receive, please feel free to call me at

two days a week in the summer, so
please leave a voicemail for me and I
will get back to you as soon as possible.
The summer is a great time to take
trips with the whole family. There are
many interesting places in New York
City where your family can experience
our Jewish Heritage and Culture .
There is the "Jewish Museum" at 1109
5th Avenue that is housed in a beautiful and elaborate mansion, the
"Museum of Jewish History-A Living
Memorial to the Holocaust" at 36
Battery Place and the "Tenement
Museum" which tells the stories of
immigrants who lived at 97 Orchard
Street, a tenement built in 1863 in
Manhattan's Lower East Side. Tour the
Lower East Side and eat sour pickles
right from the barrels or enjoy a corned
beef sandwich at the 2nd Avenue Deli.

The students and staff in the Religious

assembly program and celebration in
which I thanked the staff and parents
for helping to make this year so successful. The students really out did
themselves this year mastering the

a wonderful time. All of our children are enjoying our
enrichment activities such as music, exercise, dance,

summer sun can’t be more fun than running through the
sprinklers right here at Camp Temple Emanu-El. It’s so
adorable to watch the children arrive for camp in their
bathing suits. They smell of sunscreen and their giggles
and smiley faces make everyone happy to be here. The

Shabbat Shalom.
Peace. What is inner peace? We talk about it,
yet the experience is often elusive. To cultivate this inner peace, this bliss, this state of
reverence, one must abandon the thinking
mind for a time. It is a place of the heart; a
place of charitable gratitude. Remember
some of the delight and joy of being a child;
the free abandon of pure bliss? This state
still lives within us. It is this implacable
inner celebration of life and being that we
all carry within, that will create peace on
earth.
Can we allow ourselves to delve into the
silent celebration that reverberates in
Shalom? We cannot create peace until we
know it. When Love takes precedence over
being right we can know peace. Having to
be right is a form of violence. It makes the
other person wrong. One of the ways to
practice peace is to practice kindness. This

YOUTH AND FAMILY ACTIVITIES
I hope you are enjoying the summer and making the most
of where you live. Beach Shabbat is a beautiful way to celebrate summer and Shabbat at the same time. When the
surf is pounding and your toes are in the sand and prayers
are being sung in the wind, then there is no doubt God is
listening. Don’t forget to be a part of it. Bring the kids and
have them come by my blanket to share my chips.
A new and exciting thing will be happening this coming
year. The Madrichim Program will be starting this Fall. The
Program is partially funded by The Slomo and Cindy
Silvian Foundation, Inc. Our post Bar/Bat Mitzvah students will meet for dinner and discussion groups and to
perform a variety of service activities for the Religious
School and the Family Ed. program. You’ll be hearing
much more about this in the coming weeks.
I’m already thinking about all the great activities we’ll have
in the year ahead. I’m thrilled by the consistently high
turn-out. Tell your friends…the more the merrier (except
when I’m making blintzes!)
Have a great summer and don’t forget your sunblock!
Lori Z. Weinbloom
Master of the universe, I hereby forgive anyone who angered or
antagonized me or who sinned against me — whether against my
body, my property, my honor or against anything of mine;
whether he did so accidentally, willfully, carelessly, or purposely;
whether through speech, deed, thought, or notion; whether in this
transmigration or another transmigration — I forgive every
Jew.(person). May no one be punished because of me. May it will
be Your will, HASHEM, my God and the God of my forefathers,
that I may sin no more. Whatever sins I have done before You,
may You blot out in Your abundant mercies, but not through suf fering or bad illnesses. May the expressions of my mouth and the
thoughts of my heart find favor before You, HASHEM, my Rock
and my Redeemer.1
So it is with heartfelt blessings that I wish you all Peace,
Deep Peace, Deep Inner Peace.
