BACKGROUND:
Matina River originates from the mountain ranges in Calinan and Tugbok Districts in Davao
City. It passes through the Brgy. Langub, Matina Pangi, Matina Crossing and drains in the
estuary of Brgy. Matina Aplaya. The river has many tributary creeks in the upstream.
II.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
LGU – Brgy. Matina Aplaya shall:
1. Lead in the site preparation and ensure the right of way for those who will participate in the
tree planting and clean-up activities
2. Commit to actively participate in clean-up activities.

3. Lead in the coordination with land owners in the protection of the creek against manmade
destruction and cleanliness of the creek.
EMB shall:
1. Conduct seminars and assist in the preparation of IEC materials on RA 9003, RA 9275 and
other related laws.
2. Provide technical expertise to all participating members in rehabilitating and managing the
creek.
3. Commit to participate in the tree planting and clean-up activities.
4. Lead in the monitoring of water quality together with LGU- Matina Aplaya.

The DO and BOD level of the river in the Relief Bridge Station did not meet the water quality
criteria set for class C water.

c. Community Mobilization
1. Clean-up Activities
1st Quarter
There were about 19 participants from City Engineers’ Office, CENRO Bangkal and EMB XI who joined
the clean-up and gathered about 10 sacks of non-biodegradable of garbage.
2. Information Education Campaign
Before any activity being conducted, a brief IEC is being given to the participants to ensure the
awareness of what they are doing.

Last March 27, 2013, together with other two barangays that Matina River traverses, Barangays Matina
Pangi and Matina Crossing participated in an Information Education Campaign for Solid Waste
Management and Air Quality Management.
IV.
Good Practices, Lessons Learned, and Challenges
The barangay have the 3rd Sunday of the month as regular coastal clean-up with documentation.
This program is to prevent the kind of tragedy occurred last year.
V.
Next Steps (Plan of Action)
To continue the clean-up activities until the creek will be free from garbage.
