The more traditional way of pressing, equipment is generally less expensive, but the manual nature of pressing in this way does mean that more labour is required and throughput is limited. • Belt Pressing – A more modern, automated pressing method. Allows large quantities of fruit to be pressed with minimal labour, but the equipment costs are more expensive. Before pressing, apples need to be crushed to a fine pulp. Effectively crushing can have as much effect on juice yields as the power of the press. Vigo offers the Voran range of robust, heavy duty mills for commercial operations. The model of press will determine which mill is compatible. Vigo can offer advice on equipment to suit your planned production rates and budget. Hydraulic Pressing Also known as rack and cloth presses or pack presses, hydraulic presses are a simple and relatively inexpensive way of producing high yields of juice. Apple pulp is wrapped in cloths, sandwiched between slatted wooden boards and stacked to form a ‘cheese’, which is pressed. The Voran range of hydraulic presses from Vigo offer you the following features: • • • • • bility to press from 150 to 1000 kg per hour, depending on the model used A H igh juice yields – the thin layers of pulp allow juice to flow laterally to give a good yield R elatively inexpensive – ideal for start ups or small scale artisan producers S uitable for cider and juice makers wishing to press between 500 kg and 6 tonnes per day High quality, robust equipment – there are many Voran presses over 20 years old which are still giving good service today • S upplied complete with racks and cloths • Tested prior to despatch by Vigo engineers • C omprehensive 12 month warranty, backed up by Vigo engineers 3 Hydraulic presses are available in three sizes – 50P, 100P and 180P. The 100P press is available either with a single press bed, twin beds mounted on sliding trolleys or with twin beds mounted on a swivel chassis. Twin beds allow a cheese to be built while another is being pressed, doubling the rate of production. • S ingle press bed - bed mounted on a sliding trolley • C an press up to 150 kg (50P1) or 300 kg (100P1) of pulp per hour • S uitable for use with an RM 2.2 mill • S ingle phase or 3 phase versions available t le u b p u h o g d ou r 50/100P1 Twin (P2) Bed Press th l s ea id for -up t r a St Single (P1) Bed Presses 100P2 • Twin press beds - beds mounted on a sliding trolley • T win beds allow a cheese to be built while another is pressing, effectively doubling throughput • Can press up to 600 kg of pulp per hour • Suitable for use with an RM 2.2 mill • Single phase or 3 phase versions available Model Beds Capacity (Kg/Hr) Motor (kW) Voltage (V) Pressure (Tonnes) Dimensions (W x D x H mm) Weight (Kg) Stock Code Compatible Mill 50P1 1 up to 150 1.1 230 or 400 17.5 1100 x 990 x 1430 195 91356/7 RM2.2 265 91328/30 RM2.2 295 91332/4 RM2.2 100P1 1 up to 300 1.5 230 or 400 24.7 1208 x 1030 x 1450 100P2 2 up to 600 1.5 230 or 400 24.7 2080 x 1030 x 1450 Compatible Mill: RM2.2 Fruit is fed into a hopper, pulverised by a heavy rotor, and discharged through a perforated screen which resembles a grater. They are based in North Oxfordshire and have a 500 tree apple orchard. In the start-up phase of their business, The Little Orchard Company required apple pressing equipment that would be appropriate for a trial run of 7000 litres of cider produced in a small pressing shed. The equipment also had to be future-proof so that it could cope with much larger volumes if the trial was successful. Vigo supplied a Voran RM2.2 mill and 100P2 hydraulic press, which comfortably gave them the throughput required for the trial run, whilst having plenty of capacity to cope with the future expansion of production. Jo Dakin said, “Our trial run has been a huge success and we are already planning next year’s expansion. We are delighted with both the quality equipment supplied by Vigo and the friendly advice given, which is always pertinent, probably because Vigo’s owner is a cidermaker himself.” Little Stour Orchard Little Stour Orchard was founded in 2011 by Sarah Bowers. Sarah owns an orchard in Kent where she and husband Michael grow 3 varieties of English apple. With an established orchard, Sarah and Michael wanted to get into the business of making their own apple juice, cider and vinegar. They approached Vigo with a requirement for a system which would allow them to mill and press at a high throughput. They also wanted to effectively pasteurise and bottle their product. Vigo specified a juicing line including a Voran 100PS hydraulic press. A WA/LC wash mill with elevator was included in the specification to minimise labour. Equipment to pasteurise, fill and cap bottles was also specified. Michael Bowers, said: “After much searching it was clear that Vigo were the company to go to for juicing equipment. Since it is important to us to use local companies where possible, the fact that they are also based in England was a massive plus. In speaking with them, I was impressed by how well they understood our requirements and were able to advise on what equipment would suit our scale and capacity. Vigo have always given us good advice and technical support when we have needed it. They have provided excellent customer aftercare which has been invaluable for us.” 6 01404 892100 Belt Pressing Automatic belt presses offer a way of pressing high volumes of fruit pulp with minimal labour costs. Pulp is fed continuously onto a porous belt and pressed against a series of steel rollers, which extracts the juice. Yields are comparable and, in some cases, higher than those achieved by hydraulic presses. Using a belt press gives a short pressing time and leads to minimal air contact. The quality of the juice is usually very high as a result, with minimal solid content. The Voran range of belt presses from Vigo offer: • Ability to press from 300 to 6000 kg per hour, depending on the model used • Continuous, automatic operation where operated with a washer, elevator mill system • Minimal supervision required – reducing labour costs •High juice yields •Flexibility to press small batches of fruit – useful if pressing single varieties or contract pressing for smaller customers •Full stainless steel construction • Automatic belt cleaning • Level controls available to automatically regulate pumping of juice to holding tanks • Simple operation and cleaning • Set-up, commissioning and training carried out by experienced Vigo engineers • Comprehensive 12 month warranty, backed up by Vigo engineers EBP650 belt press & WA/LC wash mill with elevator 7 • P resses up to 300 kg of apple pulp per hour • S ingle or 3 phase models available • U se with SA wash mill with elevator to hr p / u kg 0 30 EBP350 Sunnyhaye Fruit Farm Compatible Mill: SA (see page 12) to hr p / u kg 0 70 EBP500 • P resses up to 700 kg of apple pulp per hour • S ingle or 3 phase models available • U se with either SA or WA/LC wash mill with elevator Compatible Mills: SA or WA/LC (see page 12) 8 01404 892100 • Presses up to 1500 kg of apple pulp per hour • 3 phase only • Use with WA/LC wash mill with elevator r to /h p g u k 00 15 EBP650 Compatible Mills: WA/LC (see page 12) r to /h p g k 00 • P resses up to 3000 kg of apple pulp per hour • 3 phase only • U se with WAR65 wash mill with elevator u 30 EBP1200 Compatible Mills: WAR65 (see page 12) 9 • Presses up to 6000 kg of apple pulp per hour • T win belt system gives very high juice yields • Use with WAR65 wash mill with elevator or Washmodule 700 with fruit grinder h g e hi ic ds ju il ye BP1200 ExPress Cornish Orchards Ltd Compatible Mills: WAR65 (see page 12) Model Capacity (Kg/Hr) Motor (kW) Voltage (V) Dimensions (W x D x H mm) Weight (Kg) Stock Code Compatible Washmill EBP350 up to 300 0.37 230 or 400 660 x 1257 x 1265 350 91369/8 SA EBP500 up to 700 0.37 230 or 400 980 x 1850 x 1297 520 91354/3 SA or WA/LC EBP650 up to 1500 0.55 400 1450 x 2250 x 1460 985 91380 WA/LC EBP1200 up to 3000 2.2 400 2100 x 3035 x 1690 2500 91355 WAR 65 BP1200 ExPress up to 6000 2.2 400 2550 x 4667 x 2550 3480 91393 WAR 65 or Washmodule 700 10 01404 892100 Wash Mills with Elevator These machines wash fruit and deliver it milled directly to the press; which can be either a belt press or a hydraulic swivel bed press. Fruit is fed into a washing bath and is elevated into the mill, receiving a spray of water while being elevated. The fruit is pulverised by a heavy rotor and pulp is discharged through a perforated screen. For different types of fruit, screens can be changed for versions with different sized perforations to optimise the consistency of the pulp for pressing, which can allow you to get optimum juice yields. The supply of apples to the mill is automatically regulated by a pressure sensor either on the pomace hopper of the mill or at the press inlet. Wash/mill units can greatly free up time spent shovelling pomace and reduce waste – reducing costs and allowing greater throughput. r to /h p g k 00 u 10 SA •Capacity of 1000 kg per hour •Suitable for fruits and vegetables • Sorting table and water bath •Fruit elevated by flighted conveyor belt, receiving a spray of water during elevation •Mounted on wheels for ease of movement •Stainless steel construction throughout •Single or 3 phase versions available 11 r to /h p g k 00 u •Capacity of 2000 kg per hour •Fruit elevated to mill from water bath by auger •Fruit receives a spray of water during elevation •Variable speed •Stainless steel construction throughout •Versions available for belt or hydraulic pressing •Single or 3 phase versions available 60 r to /h p g k 00 u WAR65 20 WA/LC •Capacity of 6000 kg per hour •Fruit elevated to mill from water bath by auger •Fruit receives a spray of water during elevation •Variable speed •Stainless steel construction throughout •3 phase only ty ie its r u va fr f o Washmodule 700 • Capacity of 6000 kg per hour • Suitable for a variety of fruits •Air is pumped into water bath to optimise washing of fruit •Fruit is elevated by flighted conveyor belt, and receives a water spray during elevation • Circulates water • Stainless steel construction throughout • 3 phase only Model Capacity (Kg/Hr) Motor (kW) Elevator / Mill Voltage (V) Dimensions (W x D x H mm) Weight (Kg) Stock Code SA 1000 0.37 / 2.2 400 700 x 2620 x 2100 185 91263/56 WALC (for 100/180PS) 2000 1.5 / 3.0 230 / 400 1800 x 700 x 2100 230 91222/0 WALC (for belt presses) 2000 1.5 / 3.0 230 / 400 1800 x 700 x 2350 250 91240/19/33/17 WAR65 6000 2.2 / 5.5 400 1800 x 880 x 2435 423 91236/41 Washmodule 700 6000 0.37 / 5.5 400 1032 x 3423 x 2974 355 - 12 01404 892100 Case Studies Chiltern Ridge Chiltern Ridge is a rapidly expanding apple juicing business in Buckinghamshire. They produce juice from their own orchard, and also provide a bespoke apple juice making service for individuals who grow apples in the area. Chiltern Ridge approached Vigo with a requirement for a flexible system able to press small batches of fruit, ensuring that customers receive juice from their own apples. The system also needed to be able to cope with high levels of throughput with a minimal labour requirement. Vigo specified a juicing line including a Voran WA/LC wash mill with elevator and an EBP500 belt press, with sorting table, juice pump and level control. The Voran EBP500 belt press is an ideal unit for this application, with no batch limit and its proven ability to provide high yields of juice. The system was installed and commissioned by Vigo engineers. Evert Donker, proprietor of Chiltern Ridge said, “We chose Vigo because they offered high quality equipment which was appropriate to our requirements. The team at Vigo are great people to work with, and they always provide a prompt and good quality service”. Drovers Hill Farm Drovers Hill Farm is an organic farm based in the Chilterns owned by Mark and Nicola Knop. They grow over 15 varieties of apple in their orchard, which they use to make juice and cider. Drovers Hill required a system to produce juice with minimal labour, along with equipment to fill, cap and label their bottles. Vigo specified a Voran EPB350 belt press with SA wash mill with elevator. This system allows Drovers Hill to press around 300 kg of apples per hour with minimal labour. Vigo also supplied a gravity filler, in-bottle pasteuriser, pneumatic screw capper and VL/1 semiautomatic labelling machine. The equipment was installed and commissioned by Vigo engineers. Mark Knop said, ”Vigo offered us high quality equipment at a good price. Their advice reassured us that we were ordering the correct equipment for our needs.
