HART for Animals, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to saving the lives of
homeless pets in Western Maryland. Through a network of volunteers – individuals and
rescue organizations – HART is able to rescue animals from the Garrett County shelter
and give them a chance to find a permanent home. The HART Animal Center on Bumble
Bee Road in Accident, MD, offers full-service veterinary services at the Bredel Veterinary
Clinic, day and overnight accommodations at the Bed ‘n Bark Inn pet hotel, and grooming
services at MUTTWorks Salon. The 12,000 square foot building was completed in April
of 2016, with the addition of the HART Adoption Wing, where adoptable animals will
never have to be euthanized.

Skip Around Town
...by Skip “Cataract” Carr
The social event of August in
Garrett County was the celebration
of nuptial vows by Blakely Glotfelty
and Stephen Deutsch at Chanteclaire Farm...only a small portion of
our population was not invited. Linda
had a grand time reuniting with the
“Glotfelty Boys”, “The Bass Kids”,
Abby Sherrard and many others.
I received a wonderful letter from
Sylvia Marko after her picture appeared in this column last month.
Sylvia told me that over the years her
picture has been in our publication
four times. She compared the thrill of
having her picture in The Lake-Front
Magazine with the happiness that was
sought after in a very popular song of
the 70’s. This month’s Trivia Contest
will honor Sylvia’s letter as I write in
phrases from the song and then, at the
end of the column, ask you to identify
the group that performed the hit.

My friend Alice “Grammy Nut”

month. Alice was a positive force in
Friendsville for many years and we
spent countless hours discussing
politics at all levels. I always called
her “Boss” as a title of respect, while,
bless her, she called me “Scott” to
the very end. Condolences and love
to her family, especially her greatgrandchildren.
“We sing about beauty and we sing

It’s time to start thinking about calling Rush Services to have them come
by and service your furnace for the
upcoming winter. Early reports from
my sources are calling for temperatures on most days to be between -10
and -35 with upwards of 1765 inches
of snow(measured diagonally)!...so,
be prepared.

With a diverse background in sales, retail and hospitality, Maryellen Miller knows
she has ended up right where she is supposed to be: as the owner of one of the area’s
most popular wine shops. Many wine aficionados and gourmet food lovers have
already discovered Fireside Deli & Wine Shop, located on Glendale Road, just minutes
from Deep Creek State Park.
If you haven’t yet, you are in
for a treat.
What makes Fireside so
unique is the type of wine that
is offered there. Maryellen
likes to “think outside the
box” in her store. That’s
why she’s always looked for
smaller production wines and
unknown varietals to feature
at the shop. “Wine today is
mass produced,” she says. “I
look for small wineries, ones
that put their name on the
bottle and their heart and soul
into the wine. Although they
are more available today than
they were when I first opened
Fireside Deli and Wine Shop offers a large
the shop, I still get excited
selection of boutique wines at affordable prices when I find a new wine to
share with my customers.”
All of the wines she features are less than 200 case productions and are literally
“the best of the best”. Because of Maryellen’s dedication to these smaller family owned
vineyards, Fireside now offers one of the finest wine collections in the area and is the
area’s largest retailer of hard to find varietals from around the world.
“Although you’ll find unique wines at Fireside, they don’t necessarily come with a
high price tag,” says Maryellen. “We have a lot of delicious, high quality wines starting
at just $10 a bottle.” Her $100 cases are also very popular. With this promotion, you
can choose any twelve of her value priced wines for just $100. “This is a great deal
and very popular with my clients. Basically, you are getting delicious wines for about
$8 a bottle, many of which retail for as much as $25 each. You can choose your own
or let Maryellen customize it to your next gathering. “It’s perfect for entertaining and
a great way to try some new wines.”
If you’re overwhelmed by which wine to choose, Maryellen can help. She has an
unerring sense of taste and an uncanny memory to remember her client’s favorites.
Prefer to taste before you buy? Stop by on Saturday afternoon from Noon until 4 PM
for free tastings where Maryellen showcases her latest finds. “I teach people how to

savor wine, not guzzle it. Wine is meant to enhance food, it’s meant to enhance life
in general. Americans are just beginning to understand what Europeans have known
for centuries.”
One of the most unique features about Fireside is that you can sit down and
enjoy any bottle of wine you have
purchased for just a $15 service
fee. Maryellen is also offering wine
flights, which feature three different
wines paired with cheese so you can
enjoy a taste before you purchase.
The newest trend in the wine
business is the larger liter bottles,
which are not only more cost effective
for larger groups and present well,
but most importantly, allow less air
into the bottle allowing the wine
to stay fresh longer. Fireside has
a variety of 3 to 5 liter bottles and
some up to 12 liters. Maryellen
hasn’t forgotten beer lovers, she has
a nice selection of microbrews as
well.
Maryellen would be the first to
tell you that all wine tastes better
with the right food. The deli case at
Fireside features delicious cheeses
from around the world including

with Guinness Stout. Hungry? Stop
by for lunch and one of Maryellen’s
delicious panini (grilled, pressed sandwiches) like the Italian Combo, the Cuban,
Reuben, Meatball, Turkey Swiss, Grecian Chicken Breast, Mediterranean, Caprese and
more. She also offers traditional deli sandwiches fresh from the deli case and sides like
a Greek or Anti Pasta salad. Enjoy your meal in Fireside’s warm, comfy atmosphere
or head outside with a bottle of wine to the dog friendly patio or picnic tables.
At the Fireside Deli, you won’t find “pre-made” anything, Maryellen even makes
her own ketchup. Her theme is quality, not quantity and she uses the freshest possible
ingredients at all time. She is always playing with new menu items for her customers
to enjoy and is adding more organic choices.
Looking for a unique gift? Maryellen specializes in individualized Gift Baskets
and Boxes. No matter what the occasion, your basket can be created here. You can
select from one of her many unique baskets and fill it with the items you select to send
a message that will be remembered forever or let Maryellen choose for you. Simply
give her a price range or theme and the process begins. Your basket can be created
with your choice of cheeses, coffees from around the world, with or without wine,

Amy Childers — Celebrating
Nature through Fabric
Submitted by the Garrett County Arts Council
Amy Childers is one of the newest artists showing work at the Garrett County Arts
Council’s Gallery Shop. Her one of a kind, fiber artwork is very unique compared to other
fiber arts. She selects and hand sews pieces of commercially available fabric together to
create stunning landscape scenes. Even though she has only been sewing this style of
fabric landscape for a little
more than five years, she has
created fabric landscapes in
traditional quilting methods
for quite some time.
It all began after
she took several quilting
classes, mostly at the national
Mid-Atlantic Quilt Fest held
in Hampton, Virginia. She
learned how to matt and
frame her work rather than
traditionally quilting it, and so
a new passion was born.
When asked to describe
Amy Childers
her work, Childers replied
“They are hand appliquéd
landscapes. They are not technically quilts because they do not have batting between the
fabric and the backing. The fabric is hand appliquéd to a muslin backing and then the
entire piece is stitched to heavy art paper to stabilize it. It is then matted and framed. “
She seeks inspiration for her artwork from the natural world around her. A lifelong
passion for nature and the outdoors combined with the scenic views near her home have
played a huge role in her work.
Childers grew up in Drexel Hill and has been involved in art her entire life. Her mother
was a painter who took her to several art museums during her childhood. Her father was
involved with interior design and woodworking. She recalls “there was always a creative
atmosphere in our home. I have tried just about every medium. I always sewed and did
needlework. So when I discovered fabric landscapes, I felt like I had really found my niche.”
Childers attended Virginia Tech where she earned a degree in Biology. She retired in
2009 after working in the corporate world for many years. In 2012, she and her husband
moved to Confluence, Pennsylvania where they still live. It was after retirement that she
decided to pursue her art. She also enjoys spending her time gardening, traveling, and
cycling, as well as dabbling in other art mediums such as traditional quilt making and
pencil drawing.
Her work is currently featured in two galleries, the Turkeyfoot Valley Gallery located
in the Confluence Cyclery and GCAC’s Pop-Up Gallery Shop in McHenry, MD. She is

also exploring into the possibilities of participating in other art galleries and local events.
Childers learned about Garrett County Arts Council upon meeting GCAC Executive
Director Karen Reckner in a Continuing Education art class sponsored by Garrett College.
Following Reckner’s encouragement, Childers submitted her work for jurying and was
accepted to participate in The
Gallery Shop this past June.
Childers’ fabric landscapes,
along with the artwork of over
150 regional artists, may be
seen and purchased at the
Pop-Up Gallery Shop located
at 25227 Garrett Highway
in McHenry next to Archie’s
Barbeque. Hours of operation
are Monday-Saturday, 10am6pm and Sunday, 11am-4pm.

Council is funded by Maryland
State Arts Council, Garrett
County Government, and
through membership support. For more information or to become a member, contact

59th Annual Springs Folk Festival
October 7 & 8, 2016
The Springs Folk Festival invites you to join in the celebration of the arts,
skills and labors of our forefathers. Watch the men and women baking bread and
weaving, the men hewing logs and
threshing grain and the children enjoying themselves on an old-time
hayride. The lilting notes of blue
grass groups, gospel music and
children singing a capella fill the
air with continuous performances
in an enclosed program building.
Of course, the Mountain Anthems
singing close harmony is always a
thrill. The Springs Museum on the
grounds boasts thousands of artifacts of the Casselman Valley area.
An exceptional array of quality
handcrafted items - truly one-of-akind shopping adventure - paintings, baskets, wood crafted furniture, quilts and dulcimers - over
100 juried artisans demonstrating their
craft. Everyone will enjoy the feeling
of being a kid again as they sample the
apple fritters, kettle corn and homemade ice cream. Pennsylvania Dutch
sausage meals, pancakes and sausage,
bean soup, homemade bread baked in
an outdoor kiln, doughnuts fried as you
watch - sounds delectable!”
The festival fairgrounds are located
at 1711 Springs Rd., Springs, PA and
the festival will be open both days from
9 AM to 5 PM. More information may
be found on www.springspa.org or call
814-442-4594.

of the Somerset County Tourism Grant Program and the Laurel Highlands Visitors
Bureau.

What’s Happening
PET/CT Scanning Available
at GRMC
Garrett Regional Medical Center, in association with West Virginia University
Medicine (WVU) is now scheduling patients for PET/CT services. PET/CT scan is
a combination of two noninvasive imaging tests, positron emission tomography
(PET) and computed tomography (CT); and is used to diagnose illness, evaluate
patient response to treatment and to look for a recurrence of several medical conditions, including cancer.
PET/CT services are
widely used with cancer
patients as the procedure
can help determine the
size and location of the
cancer, whether the disease is spreading, what
the best form of treatment
is and how the treatment
is working. The testing can
also show if there has been
a recurrence of cancer.
“With the opening of
the WVU Cancer Institute
earlier this year, it was
evident that having PET/
CT services available locally is important; having
to travel out of town for
the testing creates a host
of problems for our patients who already have compromised health due to their
particular illness,” said Mark Boucot. “Providing patient centered care is a priority
and providing the needed services locally is a part of that process. We’re proud to
offer a PET/CT imaging option close to home.”
For scheduling the newly offered PET/CT Scan
services at GRMC, patients should call 866245-5995. Pictured (l-r) with the PET/Scan is
Andrew Lion, R.T.(R)(N), PETCT Technologist
and Steven Peterson, vice president of
operations at Garrett Regional Medical Center.
For scheduling PET/CT services, patients should call 866-245-5995. In addition to newly offered PET/CT services, Garrett Regional Medical Center offers a
full suite of radiologic imaging services including CT, X-ray, nuclear medicine and
ultrasound.
