In Tune kicks off with a fantastic mash-up of an inspiring
keynote speech and a buoyant cabaret featuring hidden
treasures from the Canadian songbook.

KEYNOTE
In 2010 we had an idea to do something that would help fill a noticeable gap in the
culture of theatrical development work in this country. In Tune was conceived as a
way to support a grassroots renaissance for Canadian musical theatre, and to start
a discussion about what more could be done for original creation in the genre. Just
five years from that ‘idea’ moment, so much has already changed. Like-minded
colleagues have launched new programs across the country, and the range of
opportunities for musical theatre creators has greatly expanded. We’re proud to
be one player in this new movement, which is intent on giving Canadian musicals
their place in the sun.

“The Future of Canadian Musical Theatre.”
In Tune is a Vancouver-based biennial event that develops and showcases new
Canadian musicals, and supports the artists engaged in creating and performing
them. Produced by Touchstone Theatre and the Arts Club Theatre Company, it
features 10 days of performances, showcases, masterclasses, discussion, and
development. This is the third time we’ve produced the event, and every time it
changes. We are always looking to find structures and activities that both respond
to, and stimulate, the creative community around us.
Mr. Norman co-produced (with his wife, Barbara Barsky) the Canadian premiere of
Stephen Sondheim’s ASSASSINS, which garnered five Dora Mavor Moore Awards,
including Best Production and Musical Direction. Their company, Reprise
Concerts, produced classic works in concert format including COMPANY,
ANYTHING GOES, ROAR OF THE GREASEPAINT/SMELL OF THE
CROWD, and GUYS AND DOLLS.
2015 marks the first time we have presented a finished work. We are pleased to
welcome Theatre Passe Muraille’s production of Rob Kempson’s The Way Back
To Thursday. This beautifully original work not only found its way to production,
but also found success when it premiered in Toronto in 2013. As our Lead
Presentation we hope it will seed some national alliances, and inspire more
movement of new work around the country.
However you engage with In Tune – as an audience member, a creator, a producer,
or a performer – we welcome you. There is a lot here to enjoy. Whether it’s the
insight of a master teacher, the spark of greatness glimpsed in a showcase, or the
power of community problem-solving at a discussion event, we encourage you to

Marek Norman is considered one of Canada’s most versatile theatre artists. A multi-award-winning composer/actor/producer, his
performance credits include Canadian premieres of CLOSER THAN EVER and FALSETTOS, world premieres of AMELIA (by John Gray)
and THE DEATH OF VON RICHTHOFEN … (by Des McAnuff).
Marek has created over 40 original scores for theatre productions. His musicals include DRACULA, EMILY, LARRY’S PARTY, THE
GREAT ADVENTURE, and most recently, WANDERLUST (in collaboration with Morris Panych), which received its world premiere at
the Stratford Festival. Other works include THE TIN SOLDIER and OLIVER SUTTON IS A SISSY for the National Tap Dance Co., THE
LOVER (a film-ballet), and opening/closing ceremonies for The Canada Games, Bridgefest (PEI), and Special Olympics – for which his
anthem, “Along The Way”, has become the organization’s main theme.

After sold-out concerts in New York and Toronto, BLAME CANADA!
makes its West Coast debut! Hosted by local theatre legend Jay
Brazeau and featuring an array of Vancouver’s top musical theatre
performers, BLAME CANADA! is an evening featuring work by the
members of the Canadian Musical Theatre Writers Collective (CMTWC).
Staged in concert style, this show is an amazing and rare opportunity to hear
exciting new work from Canadian musical theatre creators in other regions
and those living outside the country. Featuring Musical Direction by Kevin Michael Cripps.

Avail yourself of a great opportunity to jumpstart the next stage of your musical theatre project.
Participants can raise awareness about their in-development or tour-ready work, by presenting it to
an audience of producers and presenters. There are ten confirmed local producers and presenters,
including Katrina Dunn, Cory Philley, Donna Spencer, and Jovanni Sy, and several from outside the region,
including Toronto’s Mitchell Marcus and Barrie’s Arkady Spivak. Pitches can be a launchpad for forging
partnerships, obtaining commissions or residencies, and booking tours.

ABOUT CMTWC
The objective of the Canadian Musical Theatre Writers Collective (CMTWC) is to build a vibrant, interconnected
community of musical theatre composers, lyricists, and librettists from across Canada. By showcasing Canadian talent
and bringing the work of Canadian writers to a national audience, the CMTWC fosters the exchange of artistic expression
between musical theatre writers from across the country and helps develop a uniquely Canadian voice for musical theatre.
CMTWC is the largest organization devoted to supporting and promoting the work of Canadian musical theatre writers.
The Collective includes more than 100 Canadian composers, lyricists, and librettists, with members located all across
Canada and in major centres globally. CMTWC’s projects include regular meetings for sharing work, masterclasses with
experts working in the field, and a series of concerts featuring the work of their members.
HOW TO APPLY
Applications are open to all Canadian musical theatre projects.
Application Criteria:
• Each pitch must be no longer than 10 minutes. It is suggested that you leave 2 minutes for a Q&A session
at the end of your presentation.
• A maximum of 2 people may present each pitch. It is recommended that these presenters be artistically

Landon Braverman is a New York City-based composer, originally hailing from Vancouver, BC. His musicals
include QUEEN OF THE WEST (winner Best Score and Best Musical – Manhattan Theatre Mission) and
CHOICES (award winner at WVMTF, Top 10 Finalist Ken Davenport Short Play Competition). His music has been
featured at Lincoln Centre, 54 Below, NYMF, and across North America. He is an alumnus of Mount Allison
University and the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at NYU-Tisch.

Joseph Trefler is a New York-based composer-lyricist, originally from Toronto, Ontario. He has written a
number of musicals, including UNDERGROUND, LADY LATE NIGHT, A LADYLIKE MURDER and most recently
MEN WITH MONEY with bookwriter-lyricist Bill Nelson. He composed the scores for HONEY I’M HOME!, an
interactive film exhibit (Scotiabank Nuit Blanche), and THE MUSIC BOX, a short dance-film. Joseph received
his Bachelor of Music from the University of Toronto and an MFA from the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing
Program at NYU-Tisch.

After performing songs from the piece around Toronto and at Theatre Passe Muraille’s Crapshoot series, Rob first pitched
this piece in development to Artistic Director Andy McKim as part of their ‘Pitch Andy’ program. The piece was then
presented twice in excerpt at the Buzz Festival, and then Rob produced two independent workshops (with support from
Theatre Passe Muraille). Throughout the process, the team was the most important part – with Scott Christian, Astrid Van
Wieren, Briana Brown, and Beth Kates making significant contributions to the creation and development of the piece.

Samuel Bisson – Cellist
A versatile soloist, chamber musician
and orchestral player, Samuel has
performed with the Gryphon Trio
and performs regularly as part
of the Passport Duo. He is the
principal cellist with the Sneak Peek
Orchestra (Toronto) and the Scarborough
Philharmonic Orchestra. Samuel is an active studio session
musician and performer/arranger in a variety of music genres, and
has collaborated with artists such as Drake, Sarah Brightman, and
members of Barenaked Ladies and Our Lady Peace. He composed
the score to the award-winning short film NUIT BLANCHE, as
well as the soundtrack to the Mandarin-language feature film
LOVESICK.
Briana Brown – Director
Briana is a playwright and director.
Selected directing credits include: THE

Stage Festival), and assistant directing
the Canadian premiere of TRUE LOVE
LIES with Brad Fraser. Selected writing

Firehall Arts Centre), ALMOST, AGAIN (Best of Fringe, Toronto),
and CASSANDRA (Canadian fringe tour, Winnipeg’s FemFest, and
published in One for the Road anthology). Briana completed her
MFA in Creative Writing at UBC, and will be directing her short play
WAIT, for Theatre SKAM.
Valerie Hawkins – Performer
Val has a long history of performing
in professional theatre. Highlights
include 3 years on Broadway in the
mega musical RAGTIME, the 2013
season at the Stratford Festival, as well
as touring North America and Hawaii
in LES MISÉRABLES for Mirvish. Originally from Newfoundland,
Val has also enjoyed many a wonderful summer in beautiful PEI
performing for the Charlottetown Festival. Val trained operatically
in NYC for more than 6 years with Shari Anderson (known for
masterclasses at Juilliard and universities across North
America). In between gigs Val teaches voice and acting in
NYC and across Canada.
Rob Kempson – Performer and Creator
Rob is a theatre artist and educator. A
graduate of Queen’s University, Rob
was most recently seen starring in his

Theatre Passe Muraille – Canada’s First Theatre for New Work
Founded in 1968, Toronto-based Theatre Passe Muraille is Canada’s first theatre company for developing and producing
new Canadian work. They operate out of a designated historical building, the former Nasmith Bakery and Stables. True to
name, productions also take place “beyond walls” at site-specific locations across Toronto. Theatre Passe Muraille is known
for developing innovative and daring Canadian theatre, but they also exist to support their community. From encouraging
independent and emerging artists and multicultural work, to inspiring their staff and artists to work collaboratively, Theatre

This is Touchstone’s new permanent home, shared with the PuSh Festival, Music on
Main, and DOXA. It is an innovative creative hub for the community in the heart of the
downtown core, and has two rehearsal halls as well as offices for the four groups.
750 Hamilton is set back from the sidewalk in the 700 block of the street. Just south
of the JJ Bean kiosk you will see a set of stairs going up towards a red sign that says

For Creators and Producers
Canadian wunderkinds Sankoff and Hein come to In Tune fresh off the world premiere of their second musical at the
prestigious La Jolla Playhouse, and on their way to New York to workshop their third. A married writing team, Irene and
David will share lessons they’ve learned, and things they wish they’d known. From idea to page to stage, they discuss
ways to survive and thrive as creators in an extremely competitive field. Topics include creating authentic work that is
marketable, the power of true stories, showcasing work on both sides of the border, self-producing without blowing your
bank account and your nerves, successful collaboration with other artists, creating demos, pitching shows, the importance
of guilds, grants, lawyers, and agents . . . and why it never hurts to ask. Participants will share and discuss their own
material – anything from a pitch or synopsis to selections of an in-progress work.
David Hein and Irene Sankoff wrote, produced and starred in MY MOTHER’S LESBIAN JEWISH WICCAN WEDDING which was
picked up by Mirvish Productions, extended five times, and has now earned rave reviews and multiple “Best Musical” awards at the
New York Musical Theatre Festival and across North America. Their second musical, COME FROM AWAY, tells the true story of
when 38 planes from around the world were diverted to Gander, Newfoundland on 9/11. Developed at Goodspeed Musicals and The
Canadian Music Theatre Project, it was the hit of the NAMT Festival of New Musicals in New York City – and will receive a worldpremiere at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego. Their newest musical, MITZVAH, tells the story of a family whose son has autism, and
a mother who fights to give him a Bar Mitzvah. It will be workshopped in New York and Toronto this summer.

a new production, from first contact with the libretto and score through to opening night. He begins with general skills:
production concept, pre-production collaboration with the creative team, and casting. He then moves to skills unique to
the genre: sharing the rehearsal room with the music director and choreographer, working with actor/singers, running
technical rehearsals, and growing through previews. Robert will share his vast knowledge through the lens of one
example. The musical Caroline, or Change will be the class’ focal point for discussion, and participants will be asked to
familiarize themselves with the book and score in advance. An ideal class for musical theatre performers wanting to move
into directing, emerging directors wanting to learn more about the genre, and for old dogs who just want to learn some

Musical direction is a neglected area of musical theatre training. Caroline Humphris, one of the UK’s most prominent musical
directors, has mentored many young MDs and believes that working with composers on developing new material offers
invaluable instruction. It involves taking part in the process of assembling a musical, learning how varied and complex that
can be, and how much adaptation and flexibility is required from the MD, both as a musician and often as a mediator between
composer, performer and director. Caroline’s masterclass will start with a practical session on the MD skill set, focussing
on conducting from the keyboard and coaching songs with actors. Participants will then be paired with one of three local
composers to work an unfinished song under Caroline’s supervision, culminating in a group workshop. This class is a rare
opportunity for local musical directors to learn new approaches and get feedback from a true master.
Caroline Humphris is a renowned Music Director, Supervisor, Orchestrator, and Arranger based in the United Kingdom. For the Menier
Chocolate Factory, she conducted and/or supervised over six major productions, most notably the Olivier Award-winning, Tony-nominated
SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE (West End/Broadway), Trevor Nunn’s productions of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC (West End/Broadway/
Budapest) and ASPECTS OF LOVE, and LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS (West End/UK Tour). Caroline worked with Richard Maltby and
David Shire in developing their musical TAKE FLIGHT, and she also created the Menier Musical Theatre Courses programme. West End
conducting credits include PASSION, WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND, and MADDIE. Her most recent work includes the new musical THIS IS
MY FAMILY by Tim Firth (Sheffield Theatres/UK Tour 2014), as Arranger, Orchestrator and Music Director, RAGS (Gala, Lyric Theatre), WIND

Robert’s latest take on his much-loved song performance class allows you to tackle two styles side by side. A small
group of participants will work on two songs each, one drawn from the classic musical theatre repertoire, and one from
contemporary composers. You choose one song from the work of composer/lyricists Lorenz Hart and Richard Rodgers,
Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, or Betty Comden and Adolph Green. The second song must come from the
work of composer/lyricists Adam Guettel, Michael John LaChiusa, or William Finn. Robert will use his characteristic mix of
insight, support, and challenge to help you tackle the technical hurdles of the songs, and master the performance styles
the pieces demand. Reinvigorate your song binder and stretch your range with this new twist on the teaching work of one
of Canada’s most sought after directors and singing coaches. Both songs will be worked and presented during the class.

Robert McQueen has worked across the US, Canada, and internationally as a director, dramaturg, and teacher. On
Broadway, Robert was the Associate Director of MAMMA MIA and directed the US National, Las Vegas, Mexico
City, San Paulo, and Buenos Aires companies of the show. He was also the Resident Director on the National
Tour of the Hal Prince and Susan Stroman production of SHOWBOAT. Recent Canadian credits include Acting
Up Stage’s productions of THE WILD PARTY, FALSETTOS, THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA, CAROLINE, OR CHANGE
(Dora nomination), and THE MAN OF LA MANCHA for the Stratford Festival. Interesting international projects
include CAROUSEL in Tokyo, and WHERE ELEPHANTS WEEP in Cambodia. Robert has worked as a dramaturg
on new musicals and operas in both Canada and the US, and currently leads Acting Up Stage’s NoteWorthy program.

For Aspiring Theatre Songwriters Aged 13–17
Musical theatre allows us to bring characters to life and share them with audiences in a thrilling way. Meanwhile, each of
us is a character. We all have highs and lows, loves and hates, hopes and fears, and plenty of quirks. Our lives are great
material for musical storytelling. Daniel’s workshop will explore the basics of writing a great musical theatre song, through
the lens of our own lived experience. In a fun and dynamic session, Daniel will draw on his years of experience working
with youth to teach collaboration, how music and lyrics work together, and mining our own lives to create vivid, authentic
characters an audience will really relate to. Participants will learn about rhyme schemes, song structures, and the main
types of theatre songs, from the “I-Want” song to the grand finale. The day concludes with a mini-presentation of the
song(s) the group has created.
Daniel Maté is a composer-lyricist whose work has been honoured with the Edward Kleban Prize, the ASCAP Foundation Cole Porter
Award, and a Jonathan Larson Grant. He wrote music and lyrics for the song cycle THE LONGING AND THE SHORT OF IT (5 Carbonell
nominations), MIDDLE SCHOOL MYSTERIES, and THE STORY OF JO-BETH, and recently began work on a new musical entitled YOU
DON’T KNOW ME, FROM ADAM. He wrote lyrics and book for THE TROUBLE WITH DOUG and is the lyricist of HANSEL AND GRETL
AND HEIDI AND GÜNTER, a current commission for Chicago Shakespeare Theater. He has presented his work in a solo concert at the
Kennedy Center (DC) and numerous NYC venues. He holds an MFA from NYU/Tisch in musical theatre writing. After ten years in New
York, Daniel recently moved back to his hometown of Vancouver, where he now lives with his fiancée Tanya.

Immerse yourself in the creative process of one of our region’s most revered
and distinctive songwriters. Veda’s recording career stretches back to 1992,
with songs exploring the natural world, the trickiness of love, and the constant
threat of tragedy. A regular collaborator with theatre and dance artists, Veda’s
unique sound took the musical theatre world by storm with Do You Want
What I Have Got?: A Craigslist Cantata, created with Bill Richardson and Amiel
Gladstone. Craigslist premiered at the Arts Club in 2012, and since then has
met with rave reviews across Canada. Currently, Veda is creating Onegin with
Amiel Gladstone, which is set to premiere in the Arts Club’s 2015/16 season.
In this intimate Salon, Veda takes you through the creation stages of some of
her eclectic projects, and then fields your questions about any aspect of her –
or your – songwriting technique.

Jukebox musicals combine the draw of familiar songs with the surprise of original story or conceptual
elements. They are both popular and tricky to create. Trickiest of all can be the legal and artistic
relationship with the creators or rights holders of the songs used as the musical score. In this panel
moderated by In Tune Co-Curator Rachel Ditor, panelists share the experience they gained as they
navigated these issues on their own projects. Learn about the challenges of creating in the jukebox world
and get inspired by some fantastic success stories. The panel also features a playwrights’ agent, and an
intellectual property lawyer for a legal perspective.

of song for audition purposes, Broadway Casting Director Arnold Mungioli clarifies those expectations in a visceral
and tangible way. His renowned coaching will help you up your game, and give you a way of tackling any material with
significantly enhanced methods, attitude, and style. This class builds on what you already know, respecting the talent you
possess, while working with you to create more positive results. The focus is on helping you to book more of the roles
you want, as Arnold works one-on-one with each participant on their audition material. His perspective demystifies show
business in general and musical theatre in particular, as the day’s triumphs and epiphanies identify a new path for your
day-to-day audition life. Participants must come to the class with a fully-prepared song.
Arnold J. Mungioli is a Broadway Casting Director, Audition Coach, and Teacher, with over thirty years of experience in the
professional theatre and entertainment industries. As a Casting Director, Arnold is currently represented by A WALK ON THE MOON,
a new musical directed by Michael Greif, Bill T. Jones’ upcoming SUPER FLY THE MUSICAL and FELA! (Broadway and international
tours), JIM HENSON’S DINOSAUR TRAIN (Canadian/American tour), Robert Wilson’s ZINNIAS: THE LIFE OF CLEMENTINE HUNTER,
and two large-scale musicals in development in Toronto. Arnold has served as Executive Director of Casting for Disney Theatrical
Productions, and Senior Vice President of Casting and Creative Development for Livent. He is on faculty at NYU’s Tisch School of the
Arts, and has taught masterclasses in North America and abroad. Arnold has received two Artios Awards from the Casting Society of

In the spring of 2015 the producers of In Tune solicited ideas from the community for an original 10-minute YouTube musical,
to be promoted and disseminated as part of In Tune’s official programming. We asked for a new, original musical written and
composed specifically for YouTube, making use of the elements that define video, as opposed to live performance. The finished
work had to contain 50% musical material, all of which must be original.

Ever since Jack Stackhouse and Wendy
Brownlee met thirty years ago, they’ve been
better at being a band than a family. Now their
kids are grown with music careers of their
own and they all need to figure out how to
be more than just a band. After a successful
run at the 2014 Vancouver Fringe, the book
of The Chariot Cities is getting dramaturgical
support for its newest draft.
The winning selection, Finding Face Time, is a musical about connecting in a world that is not always grounded in reality.
It’s the story of two people whose relationship has evolved solely through video dating, and it is told entirely through a Skype
conversation. The creative team consists of Deborah Vogt, Nick Preston, Sarah Harrison, Kerry O’Donovan, Andrew Wade,
Natasha Zacher, Erin Palm, and Terry Marriot. The team received a $1000 prize to be used for writing, composing, rehearsing,
filming, and editing.

Dramaturgs in musical theatre can be an excellent resource for book writers and composers, as they help to move a new
work through a series of drafts and iterations. But often the music and the book develop in radically different ways and on
different timelines. How then does the dramaturg keep one element in step with the other as the two languages develop
towards the common goal of a finished work? A group of seasoned creators, led by the Arts Club’s Rachel Ditor, will grapple
with this question through the lens of their individual experiences, and create a set of best practices for sharing and further

Forward-thinking Susan Dickson taught high school for years, including the respected drama program at Magee
Secondary. In 2013 she did something rare and wonderful – she co-produced a new Canadian musical at her high
school, helping it to grow through a rehearsal process, and through feedback from the audience. Courtenay
Ennis and Roger Haskett’s FRANKLIN FALLS, which was workshopped at In Tune 2011, features a number
of interesting high school-aged characters. It was a fantastic match for her students and allowed them the
amazing experience of contributing creatively to a new work.
