Message From The Community Manager
I cannot believe it has been a month already since I became the Community Manager of Winona
Lakes. Coming into this position, I arrived with an open mind and much enthusiasm. I am pleased
to say that I have not lost any enthusiasm, as a matter of fact it increases every day. My mind races
with all of the good things about Winona Lakes and all the things that we can accomplish.
Sure there are many things that can be improved upon but we must start somewhere. That
somewhere starts with a plan no matter how small. Well I have started. I have started reviewing
everything we do in the day to day operations of the community. We must plan for the future and
that starts with what and how we do things now and how will it affect us as a community down
the line. Because we have done something, some way for so long does not always work in our best
interest. We need to consider our community as a business. Businesses must run efficiently in order
to succeed. I have implemented new procedures with our office and maintenance staff (and there
will be more to come.) These procedures will help identify what our strengths and weakness are
and what our costs are.
From there we look at these costs, how efficient we are at what we are doing and the practicality
of what we are doing. We can identify what changes need to be implemented to do better. When
we review the procedures and/or costs we will have a better handle on if we are proceeding in the
right direction. Some things will not be an overnight fix. There are long term and short term goals

Hello everyone,
I would like to go over a few projects we are working
on now that spring is here. In an effort to make our
community a nicer place to live, we will be planting flowers
and bushes around Winona Lakes in late March/early April
and continuing into the spring season. If anyone would like
to help with the beautification project please contact the
office for more information.
Spring also brings rain, so all members are reminded to
clear the culvert pipe underneath their driveway to allow water to flow freely. Improper
drainage hurts our roads and drives up our repair costs. Any road or drainage issues
should be reported to the office to be placed on the maintenance schedule. When the
weather warms up, the maintenance crew will be busy re-grading and putting more stone
on our roads.
May 3rd and 4th will be spring cleanup at the Middle Smithfield Municipal Building.
This is a great opportunity to get rid of your unwanted items. For more information go

that need to be identified and all need to have a plan of action. So,
the current plan of action for me as Community Manager is to keep
developing plans for different areas of operations analyze what we are
doing and improve upon what we are doing.
Winona Lakes has grown for many years. Our needs have changed
and so we must adapt. This community is the size of a small town, and
we need to understand that with growth there are more and possibly
different needs that must be attended to.
These needs must be identified and planned for. So, the message I am trying to convey is
planning and understanding our community. With this in mind we can move forward one
step or a few steps at a time, carefully, but at least prepared.
I look forward to meeting all of you as I pass through the community, at the club house
or the office.

I. Call to order
Ken Anders (President) called to order the regular
meeting of the WLPOA at 10:00am on 19th of
January 2013 in the Clubhouse.
II. Roll call
Ken Anders (President) conducted a roll call. The
following persons were present: Tom Fels (Vice

of the Proposed Fence Regulations and to adopt
the ordinances of Middle Smithfield and Lehman
Townships, as stated as of 1/19/2013, as the ordinance
for the Winona Lakes Property Owners Association.
Seconded by Stephanie Przebieglec. Motion carried
7-1-0.

Replacement cards are $10 each.
Four (4) guest passes are allotted to each
voting member per lot owned, free of charge.
Replacement guest passes are $3 each.
Tenant Photo
ID Cards
Property owners are required to register tenants
as per the Tenant Rental Policy adopted by the
Board of Directors on May 18, 2012. Tenant
Photo ID cards will be issued as long as the
tenant has been registered and the property
owner has surrendered over his/her rights to the
amenities. Tenant Photo IDs are limited to six
(6) per household and cost $10 each. Tenants
do not receive guest passes.
V. New Business
f) Garbage dump on member’s property: Robert
Fenlon moved that the Board of Directors send a
letter to Lehman Township in regards to filing a
complaint against member-owner who is illegally
dumping garbage. Seconded by Ken Anders. Motion
carried 8-0-0.

As a "community builder," you will need perseverance and determination. Not every new
initiative or program will be successful. Don't be discouraged when a new project gets off to a
slow start. They tend to start slowly and gradually gain momentum.
Set a tone that is light-hearted and fun. It should be a joy to be active in the community.
Remember to celebrate small victories. Recognition and applause are like rocket fuel for
volunteer-based activities.
Don't make the community an island. Establish significant points of connection and
collaboration with the community at large. Your community can have important, mutually
beneficial relationships with area schools, businesses, clubs and leagues, city government,
social service agencies, worship groups, activity groups, and more.
A significant part of your volunteer activity should be based on helping others in need.
Community-based philanthropy or social service projects help engender a deep sense of
community pride and embody the highest ideals of community.
Build community traditions. In the greatest of communities, residents look forward year after
year to major seasonal events and community celebrations. These recurring events create
countless memories and become deeply ingrained in the pattern of life in the community.

The Days Of The Computer Mouse Are Numbered

If you thought being able to “pinch” your iphone screen to zoom was cool, hold on to your hats,
because there is something even better coming: a way to use your computer without even touching
it. For all your Star Trek fans the crew was able to speak and wave their hands to control the
computers well, Science Fiction is slowly turning into reality.
To fully understand why this technology is so awesome, you have to ask yourself about the actual
reason the computer mouse is designed the way is it. The obvious answer would be so the user can
manipulate the computer screen. But the real is answer is: There isn't a reason why the mouse is
shaped the way it is. The mouse exists in its current form only because it’s what we’re used to using
on a desktop, but there’s no real reason we need a mouse at all. As we move towards a society that
values a more intuitive interaction with technology, the mouse most likely to be the first thing to
disappear. That’s where Leap Motion (https://leapmotion.com) comes in. The company designed a
device that allows you to control your computer with just the motion of your hands in the air.
The Leap Motion is a “near-mode finger/hand 3D motion detection device” that will allow you to
use the eight cubic feet around your computer as a virtual play area, according to the company.
Not bad for a gadget that’s only the size of an iPod. Plus it “tracks in-air movement to 1/100th of a
millimeter”, according to Wired (http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2013/01/leap-motion-asus)
Need to get a closer look at a small font? Pinch the air. Want to switch to another window? Swipe
your hand. Want to plan a route on Google Maps? Use your fingers. This means the end to an age
requiring a stylus, digital pen, game controller, mouse, or any other tool to manipulate the screen
image. For this, you don’t need anything except for your hands. You don’t even have to touch the
screen. That being said, you can use whatever you want to use the computer. Use a pen to sign a
document or—as seen in the video—chop sticks to play Angry Birds.
The 3D-motion world is your oyster. If you’re not impressed, consider the implications in other
fields. Surgeons who just need to wave a hand in front of a computer to get a different angle or
image, graphic designers who can manipulate a digital image with their hands, or office worker
bees who will be able to use computers in a more intuitive ways. It’s not that the product allows
you to do anything revolutionary; it allows you to do things in a manner that is revolutionary (and
basically limitless).
If you’re wondering what the difference is between Leap Motion and The Kinect, Microsoft’s
technology is for full-body movements while the Leap Motion is just for hand movements. This
is a technology that is interesting because it completely ignores all of the “rules” and goes for
something that just makes sense intuitively. Yes, it could be just one more thing to go wrong with
your computer, but in an age where everything is increasingly wireless and touchscreens are as

What is
Earth Day?
Earth Day is observed on April 22 and
was started in the United States in 1970
by Senator Gaylord Nelson to create
awareness for the Earth's environment
and to encourage conservation efforts. In
1990, Earth Day was taken international,
and today, more than 500 million people
in 175 countries observe Earth Day.
Everyone wants to live, work, and play in
a clean and green community . . . and it’s
up to everyone to make it possible and
improve the overall quality of life for us all.
Join Pennsylvanians across the state –
and Americans across the nation – for
the Great American Cleanup.
You can participate in the 2013 Great
American Cleanup of PA by cleaning
up litter and trash along our roadsides,
streams, beaches, parks, forests and
neighborhoods. Additional events
include holding recycling events for
hard-to-dispose of items like tires
and appliances, creating or enhancing
green areas by planting plants, bulbs,
and trees, removing or painting
over graffiti that devalues your
neighborhood, and other activities that
help beautify your community.

March 1st to May 31st

Ingredients
• 5 ears of corn, shucked
•1/2 cup small-diced red onion (1 small onion)
• 3 tablespoons cider vinegar
• 3 tablespoons good olive oil
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
•1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
• 1/2 cup julienned fresh basil leaves
Fresh Cor n Salad
Directions
In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook the corn for 3 minutes until the starchiness is just
gone. Drain and immerse it in ice water to stop the cooking and to set the color. When the corn
is cool, cut the kernels off the cob, cutting close to the cob.
Toss the kernels in a large bowl with the red onions, vinegar, olive oil, salt, and pepper. Just before
serving, toss in the fresh basil. Taste for seasonings and serve cold or at room temperature.
