The Messenger Christ the King Catholic Community A Roman Catholic Parish of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Las Vegas 4925 S. Torrey Pines Drive, Las Vegas NV; 89118 www.ctklv.org ~ (702) 871-1904 ~ Fax: (702) 251-4935 September 28, 2014 ~ Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Today’s Readings NECESSARY REPETITION First Reading — When the wicked turn away from their wickedness they have committed and do what is right, they shall surely live (Ezekiel 18:25-28). Psalm — Remember your mercies, O Lord (Psalm 25). Second Reading — Consider others as better than yourselves; look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others (Philippians 2:1-11 [1 -5]). Gospel — Tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you (Matthew 21:28-32). MASS TIMES SATURDAY: 4:00 pm SUNDAY: 7:30, 9:30,11:30 am, 1:30 pm (Misa en Español) 4:00 pm WEEKDAYS: Mon - Sat ~ 8:00 am HOLY DAYS: 8:00 am and 7:00 pm Spiritual teachers tend to repeat themselves, and to repeat other teachers. Maybe there really aren’t that many different truths to tell. Just a lot of slow, sleepy human beings— like us—who need to hear the basics over and over. Consider today’s readings. People complain that God isn’t “fair,” and Ezekiel answers that God is more than fair. People choose their own fates, and people can change. Even evildoers can turn, do right, and live. “Actions speak louder than words.” A fresh new insight? Hardly. Paul tells the Philippians he would truly be encouraged if those who claimed to believers would, in fact, look to others’ interests and not their own. “The proof of the pudding is in the eating.” A novel idea? I don’t think so. In Jesus’ story of the farmer and his sons, everyone knows the one who said he wouldn’t work—but did—is way ahead of the one who said he would work, but didn’t. “Talk is cheap.” Heard that before? Ray Una Palabra de P. Ray There is much to be grateful for as we come to the end of September. How fitting it is that the feast of San Lorenzo Ruiz arrives on the last Sunday of September. I am so thankful to the Filipino Community for the endless task of fundraising and solicitations for this unique celebration and the blessing of the new tapestry with the image of San Lorenzo Ruiz. I’d like to also acknowledge and thank so many of our parishioners that also contributed to the celebration and those that purchased souvenir booklets. Many thanks go out to all of you that prayed for the closure of escrow for my new home. It took an amazing seven weeks. My life has been a cliffhanger not knowing that the financing would happen. Nonetheless, the VA underwriters finally came through and I’m now ready to move things out of storage and settle in. Praise God!!!!! The Gift shop is need of volunteers to keep the doors open. We are having major difficulties in getting committed volunteers to help after the Masses, especially the Sunday Masses. We are going to try to make a campaign for volunteers until the 15th of October. If we do not have a sufficient amount of volunteers by the above date, then we will be forced to close the gift shop and liquidate the inventory. CTK sponsors the gift shop for your convenience, so please help us out if you would to keep the gift shop open in the future. Please contact Beth Thompson in the Religious Ed Office at (702) 871-1904 if you would like to volunteer. Questions for Sunday October 5th 2014 What is the connection between the vineyards in the first reading from Is 5:1-7 and MT 21:33-43? What group of people will the vineyard be given to in retrospect of Jesus’s address to the chief priests and elders of the people? With much love and gratitude, Fr. Ray Con mucho amor y gratitud, P. WHOM DID WE SERVE? Sept 8 through Sept 11, 2014 66 Households 101 Adults and 35 Children 40 DAYS FOR LIFE September 24th – November 2nd 40 Days For Life is an International Prayer Ministry that began in 2007 in College Station, Texas dedicated to eradicating, through prayer and fasting, centers of abortion in our communities. Since 2007, 539 cities across the United States and Canada as well as 24 countries have participated in a 40 Days Campaign praying at centers of abortion in their respective cities. Since 2007, nearly 2000 campaigns have been conducted, with over half a million participants resulting in the permanent closure of 55 centers for abortion (one here in Las Vegas). Nearly 9000 children have been saved, many of those here in Las Vegas. During 40 Days for Life, the community is asked to pray and advocate for the unborn in these three specific ways: 1. Prayer and Fasting 2. Vigil: Parishioners are asked to join together to vigil at the site of the abortion clinic. We will be outside after Mass today to collect names of those individuals wanting to participate at the clinic on Saturday, October. 4th, from 7:00 am until 7:00 pm. The clinic, The Birth Control Center, is located at 872 East Sahara Avenue (behind Tower of Jewels) in Las Vegas. Join Us! 3. Community Outreach: Perhaps you know an unwed mother whom you can journey beside, or you can contact Living Grace Homes, an organization that offers a beautiful residential facility in Las Vegas for soon-to-be mothers between the ages of 14-22. All ministries and organizations connected to Christ the King are asked to use a simple formula for prayer as they gather: Read one of the scriptures for the upcoming Sunday. Take a few moments to reflect on one of the questions related to the scripture (in Fr. Ray’s column). Invite individuals to share their response with the person next to them; encourage people to share with someone they do not know well. Before we know it we have grown closer as a community! YARN NEEDED We have a new ministry of caring for those in need of comfort, peace and spiritual solace especially in times of illness and death through the creation and presentation of the PRAYER SHAWL. What is needed is time and a willingness to create these beautiful shawls through the art of crocheting and/or knitting. We could also use your leftover yarn. Do you have scraps or skeins of yarn that you no longer need? Maybe you know someone that no longer knits or crochets. We could really use that yarn for our Prayer Shawl Ministry. For anyone who might be interested in participating in this wonderful act of love, or if you have any yarn you wish to donate, please call Maureen Morley at (702) 364-8411 for further information. Come and join this most important corporal and spiritual work! LITURGY NEWS News Update: Daily Chapel & Ministry Volunteers Needed Daily Chapel: Our plans for the transformation of the Daily Chapel are still in the works but have been delayed until December. Both tapestries of San Lorenzo Ruiz and The Divine Mercy are in the final stages of being designed and produced by the artist. In the meantime there is a tapestry of San Lorenzo Ruiz hanging in the chapel. This tapestry, courtesy of the artist, John Nava, is a representation of how the final art work will look. It is a beautiful depiction of San Lorenzo Ruiz. We invite everyone to stop into the chapel to view it and offer a prayer. We look forward to the arrival of the tapestries to complete the chapel space in December and will keep everyone informed of the dedication to take place at that time. Ministry Volunteers GREATLY Needed: We are in GREAT need of volunteers to help in EVERY ministry at mass. After our talk the weekend of September 13-14th, there were a few people who came forward to volunteer in a few ministry areas but not nearly enough to keep us functioning as we should.
