Value: $300 Mold: Hats & Canes Condition: Slightly Used From: c. 1980 Here’s a 7th issue $100 from the showboat, a black hat & cane mold with 8 striking orange inserts. It was put on the tables about 25 years ago and is in terrific condition. Lot #151 $1,000 Silver Bird, Las Vegas Catalog #: N2194 Est. Value: $150 Mold: Dice & Cards Condition: Slightly Used From: 1976 The Silver Bird was open from 1976 to 1982. It was on the Strip just north of the Riviera, where the Thunderbird had stood before and the El Rancho was to stand after. This $1,000 chip is the highest denomination used there. The genuine Silver Birds were incused diecar mold chips. Beware: these chips have been “imitated”, but the molds used on the imitations are not incused. Lot #152 $100 Silver City, Las Vegas Catalog #: N2723 Est. Value: $250 Mold: Hat & Cane Condition: Slightly Used From: 1989 The Silver City was located on the Strip just south of the Riviera, and was open from 1975 to 1999. This is a 4th issue $100 with bright green, yellow and purple inserts. Listed in C&W as an R-6. Value: $500 Mold: Dice Condition: Used From: 1950’s-60’s This is a group of 12 dice from downtown Las Vegas. The Silver Palace dice are from the late 1950’s and are quite rare. The assortment of Pioneer Club dice are from the 1950’s and 1960’s. Lot #154 $25 Silver Saddle Casino, Las Vegas Catalog #: N2610 Est. Value: $100 Mold: Hat & Cane Condition: New From: 1981 The Silver Saddle Casino was located on the Strip between the Aladdin and the Marina (now the MGM Grand.) It was open for just two years, from 1981 to 1983 and had a single issue of chips. This green $25 is in new condition and is a very tough chip to find. Value: $600 Mold: “H” Condition: Slightly Used From: 1950’s This is a 5th issue blue H-mold with 3 mustard inserts in beautiful condition. This is the chip with Shelby Williams' name spelled out in the wreath under "Las Vegas, Nev." Lot #156 n/d Silver Slipper, Las Vegas Catalog #: n/a Est. Value: $200 Mold: Christy & Jones Condition: Well Used From: 1960’s Here’s an unlisted non-denominational chip from the Silver Slipper that has been drilled but not overstamped. This yellow Christy and Jones hat & cane mold piece has a hotstamped slipper and the name of the casino in script. Value: $100 Mold: Chipco Condition: Slightly Used From: 1999 Set of $1, $5 and $25 chips from the Sky Ute Casino in Ignacio, Colorado. These chips celebrated the casino’s 6th anniversary in 1999 and may have been part of a framed set the casino sold to collectors. The Sky Ute Casino opened in 1993 and is still open today. Lot #158 $25 Sonoma Inn, Winemucca Catalog #: N7219 Est. Value: $125 Mold: Christy & Jones Condition: New From: 1950’s In the 1940’s a couple of casinos opened in Winnemucca, one in the Humboldt Hotel and the other in the Sonoma Inn. The Sonoma Inn Casino was open from 1947 to 1968. During this time, they managed to produce some of the bestlooking chips you can find from Nevada’s small towns, among them this beautiful quarter-pie, a yellow and green Christy and Jones. Value: $200 Mold: “S” Condition: Slightly Used From: 1950’s This beautiful set of S-mold chips is from the St. John’s Casino in Havana. The casino was in operation when Meyer Lansky and the mob was running the casino scene in Havana in the 50’s. One notable thing about this set of chips is that there are two mirror images amongst them… the Mustard $1 with 3 black inserts vs the Black $100 with 3 mustard inserts, and the red $5 with 3 green inserts vs the green $25 with 3 red inserts. It’s a 4th issue $1 from the Stardust, a fuchsia Christy and Jones with 3 green inserts that is in slightly used condition. Lot #163 3 25¢ chips Stockman’s, Fallon Catalog #: see description Est. Value: $50 Mold: various Condition: various From: various The chip on the left is listed in The Chip Rack as V3463, a pink horseheads right mold with thin print. The middle chip is listed as N4327, a similar chip with thicker printing. But what’s that one on the right? It’s a Ewing mold and it’s not to be found in the guide books. Value: $150 Mold: Crest & Seal Condition: various From: 1927 According to James Campiglia and Steve Wells, authors of The Official U.S. Casino Chip Price Guide: “Historically speaking, these are very important chips. They are the first Nevada chips with the town name printed on them. Building was an Elks Lodge that got its own gaming operation going before legalization in 1931. These chips were used for poker games as this was a gambling activity generally ignored by authorities. Value: $1,000 Mold: Large Key Condition: New From: 1982 Here’s a real rarity from Lovelock. It’s an unlisted $25 in their large key series that was used in the early 1980’s. Value: $250 Mold: Diamonds & Squares Condition: Average From: 1975 Here’s a very scarce first issue from the Sundowner in Reno. It’s a brown diamonds and squares mold with 3 black inserts. Just about all of these are very worn, and this one is as good as you’ll find anywhere. Lot #167 “Streak” chip Taj Mahal, Atlantic City Catalog #: n/a Est. Value: n/a Mold: Plain Condition: Average From: n/a Do they give you one of these if you run around in the casino with no clothes on? Well, no… you’d get a nice set of handcuffs for doing that. This chip is actually used by dealers in a blackjack game called “Streak”, where the player can make side bets against the dealer on winning a series of consecutive hands. The bigger the streak, the higher the payout… but only the dealer could touch these chips! Lot #168 3 chips The Vapors, Hot Springs, AR Catalog #: n/a Est. Value: $250 Mold: Circle in Square Condition: Slightly Used From: n/a The Vapors was open from 1962 to 1967 in Hot Springs, AR. It was a theatre supper club that also had 37 slot machines and blackjack, roulette, and craps tables. This great looking set of circle in square mold chips is in slightly used condition. Value: $400 Mold: Arrows & Dice Condition: Slightly Used From: 1953 Here’s an arodie from the Thunderbird… that would make this as desirable a chip as one could ask for. The bird’s blue belly button, however, adds a panache all its own. This 4th issue beauty is in almost perfect condition. Lot #170 $25 Treasure Chest, Carson City Catalog #: V4384 Est. Value: $200 Mold: Horseshoe Condition: New From: 1970 The Treasure Chest in Carson City was open from 1970 to 1973 on North Carson Street. Prior to this, this small club had been known as the Kit Carson Club and then the Horseshoe Club. Their $25 chip was a very attractive black horseshoe mold with 3 purple inserts and featured their logo of a treasure chest overflowing with gold. This chip has a small edge flake but is otherwise in perfect condition. Lot #171 $5 Trocadero, Reno Catalog #: N5598 Est. Value: $200 Mold: Rectangle Condition: Slightly Used From: 1940’s In the 1940’s the El Cortez was one of the top hotels in Reno. The El Cortez had a showroom called The Trocadero, which, interesting enough, had its own gaming tables. This extremely rare piece, a red rectangle mold that is in incredible condition for a chip upwards of 60 years old. Value: $175 Mold: Hat & Cane Condition: Slightly Used From: 1979 This is a lot of 3 hotstamped chips from the Tropicana. Condition: A total of 150New sets were Est. Value: $300 From: issued and they sold out immediately. It is interesting to note that the $10 chips were 2004 manufactured with the hat and cane mold, while the $5, $25, and $100 chips were made using the house mold. These chips are in a jewel case with the cover and inside designs depicted below. Value: $200 Mold: House Condition: New From: n/a These chips were ordered from the Burt Company by the Trump Plaza to be used as regular rack chips. Unfortunately, they were found to be too fragile to be used in the casino and were rejected by the Trump Plaza. Lot #175 5 $5 chips Trump Taj Mahal, Atlantic City Catalog #: various Est. Value: $50 Mold: House Condition: various From: 2004 Here’s a lot of 5 nice chips from the Taj commemorating Pai-Gow (1995), Year of the Pig (1995), U.S. Poker Championship (1996), Grand Opening of Poker Room (1993), and finally Donald J. Value: $75 Mold: Chipco Condition: New From: 1997 This chip was a private issue manufactured by Chipco and given out at a roast for Larry Clark, who was at that time an executive at the Taj. Lot #177 $100 Vegas World, Las Vegas Catalog #: N9257 Est. Value: $450 Mold: Hat & Cane Condition: New From: 1979 On the property formerly occupied by his burneddown Million Dollar Casino, Bob Stupak built Vegas World, which operated from 1979 to 1995. It was then razed to make way for the present-day Stratosphere. This chip is a first issue $100 that is listed as an R-8 in C&W’s price guide and is in new condition. Lot #178 $5 Winners Inn, Winnemucca Catalog #: N4368 Est. Value: $125 Mold: Horseshoe Condition: Average From: 1972 In 1969 Joe Mackie, owner of the Star Broiler, bought the Sonoma Inn and renamed it the Winners Inn. (Many of the lower denomination chips used in these casinos have “Winners” on one side and “Star” on the other.) This $5 mustard horseshoe mold with 3 brown inserts is listed as an R-9 in C&W, but a few have been found since publication. Still, a very desirable and scarce chip. Value: $50 Mold: Plaque Condition: Slightly Used From: n/a Here’s a beautiful 10.5 cm x 7 cm plaque from Wrottesley Hall in Wrottesley, Wolverhampton, England, which casino closed around 1970.
