I, along with the entire REC Foundation staff, look forward to welcoming you to Louisville in April so that you may experience all this incredible city has to offer. VEX Worlds presents a unique opportunity to recognize the hard work and dedication of an entire community of robotics teams now reaching over 16,000 teams. trend, the VEX Robotics Competition remains the largest and fastest growing robotics program for middle and high school students across the U.S. and internationally. Students participating in the VEX Robotics Competition have an ever-growing list of opportunities, with many more competitions, leagues and scrimmages, expanded scholarship and grant offerings, exciting Online Over the course of the next several days, the Kentucky Exposition Center will become home to 1,000 VEX IQ Challenge, VEX Robotics Competition, and VEX U teams gathering together under one roof, in one city, for one outstanding celebration. This year, we’re enabling more teams to attend by expanding our use of the venue, while also enhancing the experience for teams across two spacious arenas, and offering a one-of-a-kind team after-party at Kentucky Kingdom, an amusement park just a short walk from VEX Worlds! Louisville remains an intriguing destination, filled with unique attractions, exciting activities, and an outstanding culinary scene. I encourage you to spend some time exploring this vibrant city and am thrilled to share a snapshot in the pages that follow. I look forward to crowning our 2016 VEX Robotics World Champions and wish everyone an enjoyable visit to Louisville! This season, in partnership with VEX Robotics, Inc., we continued to grow the ever-popular VEX IQ Challenge – reaching students and teachers in elementary and middle school to provide them with classroom curriculum and set them on a journey of STEM exploration. Continuing on this 4 VEX WORLDS I 2016 Challenges, Industry Certifications in Robotics Engineering and Pre-Engineering, and a longanticipated Alumni Program. Finally, VEX U saw expansion this year as more and more secondary school students graduate and seek to start teams of their own. Students, with guidance from their teachers and mentors, use the VEX IQ robotics platform to design, build, and program a robot to solve an engineering challenge, presented in the form of a game. Teams participate in year-round local, state, and regional events, as they seek to qualify for VEX Worlds, the culminating event that draws hundreds of the best teams from around the globe to crown the World Champions. During the robot game challenge, VEX IQ Challenge teams collaborate to score points in Teamwork Matches and demonstrate their skills in driver-controlled and programming Skills Challenges. In the STEM Research Project Challenge, students explore a STEM theme to solve a real-world challenge. Students then share their research findings in either a written submission or a creative oral presentation format. VEX IQ provides a free, 12-unit curriculum, mapped to Common Core, Next Generation Science, and Technological Literacy Standards. Each year, a new engineering challenge is presented in the form of a game. Students use the VEX EDR robotics platform to design and build a robot to solve the game challenge. Teams compete throughout the year at a series of local, state, and regional events, seeking to qualify for VEX Worlds, the culminating event that draws hundreds of the best teams from around the globe to crown the World Champions. Students, with guidance from their teachers and mentors, design and build innovative robots in small teams and compete in qualification matches, elimination matches, and programming and driver-controlled Skills Challenges. Students gain valuable life skills in addition to learning engineering and design principles related to STEM. The VEX Robotics Competition offers a number of curriculum resources to provide educators with the tools they need to integrate the program into the learning day. Each inductee in every Hall has demonstrated the highest level of commitment, passion, achievement, and impact on STEM education, aiding the development of the next generation of scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians. We hope that by recognizing the accomplishments of these outstanding individuals, we will highlight shared success, creative efforts, best practices, and role models. STEM Hall of Fame www.roboticseducation.org/stem-hall-of-fame 12 VEX WORLDS I 2016 Outstanding The STEM Hall of Fame includes seven categories: • STEM Hero • Teacher of the Year • Mentor of the Year • Volunteer of the Year • Partner of the Year • Team Excellence • World Champions 7 7 REC FOUNDATION Industry Certifications & Scholarships Careers in STEM Future Education in STEM The REC Foundation is pleased to provide two industry certifications for students in engineering related programs and robotics clubs. The REC Foundation’s Pre-Engineering and Robotics Certifications reflect the knowledge that students should demonstrate after 150 hours of high school-level coursework focusing on basic fundamentals of engineering and robotics. The content is based on coursework and experience and does not require any specific textbook, curricula, or software. The REC Foundation’s Industry Certifications are in response to a global need for more students to be prepared to pursue careers in the STEM fields. Established in 2013, The REC Foundation Scholarship Program has grown to include more than 250 scholarships valued at over $4 million. The focus of the program is to ensure that students participating in competitive robotics programs have clear pathways to advance their education and prepare for a future career in the STEM fields.
