A warm welcome to the Hausmesse 2009! A fair very much in the
spirit of its 21 predecessors, but a fair that also presents much
that is new.
As always, we will be offering detailed presentations of our latest products through a variety of workshops and product demos.
For the subjects and times of these demonstrations, please consult the demo maps near the entrance area, or ask one of our employees, who will be more than happy to help.
When developing our new products and systems, we continually think of the end user. We think of daily practice, of the requirements that are certain to be placed upon them, and we also
strive to anticipate problems that might arise. Our systems are designed to help users master their everyday assignments. But more
than that, our systems are intended to make important contributions toward the comfort, reliability, and quality of productions and
installations. This is a difficult assignment, but it is by no means
impossible.
In the Champions League of the entertainment industry our systems are key players. Superstars like R.E.M., Oasis, Bryan Adams,
and Paul McCartney put their faith in our products, as does the
management of top clubs, famous theatres, and (as described on
page 13) shipyards that produce the largest luxury liners. But we
should not overlook the fact that our systems also—in fact, more
often—play a role in less spectacular but nonetheless vital ways
by providing sound for the talent of tomorrow, helping small bands
find their way in the industry, or encouraging small clubs to survive and prosper. We have solutions specifically tailored to anyone, regardless of the size of their audience or scale of their operation.
We wish you all a pleasant stay in Straubing and hope that you
find this issue of newsflash both informative and enjoyable.

It is with the greatest pleasure that we welcome you to the Hausmesse 2009. Although in recent
years we have played host to some 600 guests from over 50 countries, the 22nd Hausmesse nevertheless is held under an uncommon star, since—and this much is clear already—the year 2009 is
going to be (shall we say) an interesting one.
Naturally, as a key global player in the pro audio market, we cannot ignore the worldwide financial crisis. But we won’t be discouraged by the gloom and doom. To the contrary! We are full of optimism and thirsting for action. And with good reason…
First, after two years, our integration into Bosch has successfully concluded. After bringing communications, corporate identity, and production processes into line with Bosch standards, we now
have a new IT system at our disposal. This tool unites us in one network with all Bosch sites worldwide—bringing the advantage of synergy to communication and production.

As part of the Bosch Group, we are in a markedly stronger position to weather the effects of the
current financial crisis. Despite the uncertain future, we will continue to invest in research and development, introduce new products, and maintain a high profile in the media and at trade fairs. In
2008 we achieved growth, and in 2009, together with you, we intend to repeat that accomplishment.
The Straubing site has a particularly important role to play in all this. The investments made there,
the carefully planned renovation, and new construction measures have ensured that in Straubing
we have one of the most modern production facilities on the worldwide pro audio scene at our disposal. That not only makes for a positive working atmosphere but also an invaluable trump card in
international competition. Several times in the last few months we have seen how it plays out. For
example, there have been orders for which we have had to produce in very large quantities in an
extremely short amount of time. We were able to fill each order—supplying vast numbers of amplifiers for the Olympic Games in China, for instance—not just in time but in advance of the scheduled delivery date.
The true benefits of this efficiency and flexibility are expressed not only in sales figures but (more
importantly for us) in our discussions with you, our customers.
Further investment made possible the construction of our new test and demo facility. This is not
only the most modern facility of its kind in all Europe but also offers us outstanding possibilities. Our
developers have found the conditions there ideal, but our sales and marketing team also uses the
new 600-square-metre facility, which features state-of-the-art acoustics for training and for demonstrations of maximum practical utility.
Despite our many changes, it goes without saying that we are keeping faith with the strategies that
have served us so well in the past: The closest possible interaction with our customers, optimum
service, added value with emphasis upon the wishes of our customers, the Academies, and the slogan: “The demo makes the sale” are, and will remain, the pillars of our corporate philosophy.
Against this backdrop, we will not find it at all difficult to face the future with you, our treasured
partners and friends, in a spirit of optimism.

RAP: SNOOP DOGG WITH EV
ROCK: SIR PAUL & OASIS
It was an exclusive party, last summer in Sardinia. To the Pevero Golf
Club a certain VIP had invited a number of his closest VIP friends—and
the entertainment courtesy of rap superstar Snoop Dogg. New Sound
Service of Rome deployed Electro-Voice enclosures (XLD281, X-Subs,
Plasma P), a Midas Siena 480 console, and processors from Klark Teknik.
In the eyes of many, Oasis are the Beatles’ legitimate heirs. This much
is clear: the band led by Noel Gallagher (l.) is held in the highest esteem
by ex-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney (r.). Both acts rely on equipment from
EV and Midas. And while the Midas PRO6
console toured the world in triumph with
Oasis last year, Sir Paul’s fantastic gig in
Quebec was carried to the fans by ElectroVoice. About which more appears on page 10..
HARD ROCK: AC/DC & SAXON
It was the comeback of the year. And now the Australian
band built round guitarist Angus Young (l.) is back with a
world tour that sold out in minutes. The tour relied, once
again, on systems from Electro-Voice. Furthermore
Electro-Voice is happy to announce Metal legend Saxon
(r.) as a new endorser. Read more on page 21.
ENTERTAINMENT:
BLUE MAN GROUP
Right up front on the current tour by the internationally successful Blue Man Group are microphones from
Electro-Voice’s N/D series. “We gathered a group of mics
from various manufacturers, set them up in our studio
rehearsal space in New York, and had a shootout,” recalls
BMG audio director Matt Koenig. “We soon found the
N/D468 and N/D868 to be the best-sounding mics for our
application. They won fair and square.”
BLUES & HIPHOP: BLUESFEST WITH DYNACORD
The Bluesfest in Ottawa is one of the world’s biggest blues festivals. This year, 300,000 fans made
their pilgrimages to the Canadian metropolis to
hear acts like Wyclef Jean, James Taylor, Fergie
(seen here), and The Black Crowes. DYNACORD

BEACHBOOM, THE NETHERLANDS
RST, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
Despite the bad weather, several thousand fans attended the
Beachboom Festival on the Aug. 2 in the Zeeland beach resort of
Schouwen-Duiveland. World-class DJs like Twisted Sisters, Stereo Divas,
and Andy Sherman kept spirits high while Entertainment Zeeland—armed
with a battery of Electro-Voice XLC-127DVX systems—pushed the SPL
higher. “At first, the bad
weather was a downer
for all of us,” says Entertainment Zeeland’s
Martijn Stout. “But when
we fired up the XLC, we
got goose bumps. And
not from the cold!”
Based in the United Arab Emirates, rental company RST is frequently involved in open-air productions. To guarantee maximum system security even during seafront shows, RST is investing once again in equipment from Electro-Voice: an XLC/DVX system supplied by EV partner
NMK. “RST has had great experiences with the Rx and Plasma series
from Electro-Voice
as well as the XLD.
This latest purchase
underlines the soaring status of the
brand in this region."
SKI-JUMPING AND SLALOM, GARMISCH
BOW, ARROW, AND EV
Once again this year, the production company TC Showtechnik was
responsible for the New Year’s ski-jumping competition in GarmischPartenkirchen. The commentary for the event, which forms part of the
Four Hills Tour and is followed with rapt attention by fans throughout the
world, was delivered through DYNACORD V17 boxes and an Electro-Voice
XLD line array—the
same combination
used by TC’s Martin
Schulze at the FIS
World Cup races on
Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.
In wintery temperatures, the team from Murdock Music Entertainment
GmbH organized the first “Screenhunter Nightshot World Championships” in Waidring, Austria. Around 400 spectators watched the action unfold, with stars like Wolfgang Ambros in attendance. For the twenty-four XLD, four X-215, and six X-Sub 218 enclosures from EV carrying
the sound to the spectators, the abysmal weather was no problem.
Murdock Music Entertainment and Electro-Voice have also been assigned to the world famous Hahnenkamm downhill (Jan. 23-25)—as tough
a challenge for the sound systems as the skiers.
SNOW SPECTACULAR WITH DYNACORD
The Red Bull Snow Palio took place in Cervinia (Italy) at the end of
February 2008. The ski and snowboard spectacular is a subject of keen interest throughout Europe, and Fernanda Audio Light Service and Palco SAS
relied on equipment from DYNACORD for the event.

ELECTRO-VOICE N8000-1500 WITH FIR-DRIVE
“A WHOLE NEW ERA IN CONCERT SOUND“
The N8000-1500, a further development of the N8000, is Electro-Voice’s most powerful loudspeaker controller yet. Two current references, one in Europe (Jan Smit), the other in the States (Sarah Brightman)
illustrate the enormous benefits the upgrade brings to daily life on tour

Dutch superstar Jan Smit is not afraid to set new
standards. That was made clear once again at
his first three shows (Oct. 30—Nov. 2) in
Rotterdam’s Ahoy Arena. In order to guarantee
superlative sound quality in the 10,000-seat hall,
rental company Triple Showtechniek opted for a
groundbreaking Electro-Voice configuration. In
addition to EV X-Line and EV XLC enclosures (96
in all), this involved the first use anywhere in the
world of the new loudspeaker controller EV
N8000-1500 with FIR-Drive.
The N8000-1500 is a further development of
the N8000. Capable of 1500 MIPS, the new controller has twice the processing power of its predecessor. In fact, the N8000-1500 is currently the
most powerful loudspeaker controller on the
market. It made it possible for the sound crew
led by Marc Pardon (FOH Engineer) and Gert
Wiersema (System Technician) to run the complete rig—including delays—with EV NetMax
and FIR-Drive (Finite Impulse Response Filters);
the devices were controlled via IRIS-Net. In the
PC-based line-array controller GUI (Graphical
User Interface), Gert Wiersema had at his disposal a tool that offered all the technical options
one could wish for, while at the same time being
simple to use.
“We’ve been working with Electro-Voice for
a very long time in concert sound,” affirms
Wiersema, “but the new EV N8000-1500 with FIRDrive presets actually takes audio to a completely new level. It delivers unbelievable power
and the system remains in balance even at the

highest sound pressure levels.”
Axel Nagtegaal, who heads up E-Audio
Benelux, holds the same opinion. After the three
Ahoy shows, Nagtegaal commented: “The
N8000-1500 with FIR-Drive from Electro-Voice
has started a whole new era in concert sound.
That is precisely what we set out to prove on the
Jan Smit tour—and we succeeded. The massive compliments we received from numerous colleagues and experts at the Ahoy shows are something of which I am incredibly proud.”
Brightman’s Symphony World Tour is currently
on its 48-day/32-city North American leg, with
stops including Washington DC, Mexico City, and
Toronto. The show boasts stunning new technology that transforms the stage into a variety of
fantasy environments, creating a brand new concert experience for the audience. The tour supports “Symphony”, a collection of all-new songs which was released in the U.S. earlier this
year. To support a production as visually stunning
as Brightman’s, LD Systems sought to reinforce
her show with equally spectacular sound. Robert
Ausmus, Director of Production Services, LD
Systems, explains how an EV X-Line system with
full DSP and remote control via NetMax with FIRDrive is raising the bar on this challenging tour:
“We use our EV rigs for our most important projects,” says Ausmus, “and the new FIR filter technology has taken the system performance to a
whole new level. We used NetMax N8000 (digital DSP/matrix controller) systems with FIR-Drive

for the first time at our biggest annual event—
the Houston Rodeo—and were very pleased with
the results. On this tour we’re running all DSP via
NetMax, all managed with IRIS-Net control and
monitoring software.”
Electro-Voice’s technical staff worked closely with the Audio Crew Chief Mike “Monk” Shear
to create an extremely flexible and user-friendly IRIS-Net file for the tour. Ausmus comments:
“We’re using four NetMax N8000 units, and each
one has an AES-3 digital input card, so we stay
digital until we get to the amps. The N8000s distribute all our signals, and because we’re running the custom FIR filter for our XLE front fills,
we can say for the first time that ‘everything on
this tour is controlled via FIR filters.'”
IRIS-Net continues to make the systems tech
side of touring a pleasure, streamlining system
control in ways that would have been hard to
believe not long ago.

INTERVIEW WITH ETHAN WETZELL, TECHNICAL PRODUCT MANAGER NETMAX/IRIS-NET
“WE HAVE EFFECTIVELY SKIPPED AN ENTIRE GENERATION”
The new N8000-1500 controller sets new standards in concert sound. Product Manager Ethan Wetzell
gave newsflash an insight into the system’s development strategies, potential, and target group
NEWSFLASH: What is the most important difference between the new N8000-1500 and the wellknown N8000?
Ethan Wetzell: It is all about sheer processing
horse power. The N8000-1500 is based around
the new DSP-2 processing engine. The original
DSP-1 provided 300 MIPS of processing with two
DSP engines, while the DSP-2 provides 1200 MIPS
of processing—four times the processing power
of the original card. There is a saying in the world
of computing that one should not upgrade a system until the processing performance is double
what you have today. With the DSP-2 and the
N8000-1500 we have effectively skipped an entire generation of development to provide a fourfold increase in processing power.
NEWSFLASH: What is the biggest advantage for
users of the N8000-1500?
Ethan Wetzell: One of the biggest advantages for
users is the ability to fully utilize the EV’s FIR-Drive
processing. While other manufacturers offer FIR
filters, these are usually no more than brick-wall
filters that do not take full advantage of the possibilities FIR processing offers. EV is one of the
only companies to provide complete transfer
functions for its loudspeakers for frequency and
phase correction throughout the entire bandpass.
As one of our long standing customers told me after he heard his XLC system with FIR-Drive: “It’s
as though I had a whole new PA!“
NEWSFLASH: Which problems does the N80001500 solve?
Ethan Wetzell: The biggest challenge while developing the FIR-Drive was having enough processing available to do what we wanted and were
technically able to do. Even with the DSP-1 card,
we did not have enough processing to provide all
of the filters and processing paths that would be
needed for a fully realized, high-level PA such as
an X-Line system. The addition of the N8000-1500
now makes it possible to do this with DSP to spare. The N8000-1500 is capable of providing 32 channels of fully processed FIR signal paths for loudspeakers, including independent delays, limiters
and IIR EQ for tuning.
NEWSFLASH: A question about the target group:
The N8000-1500 is the most powerful loudspeaker
controller on the market. Does this mean it is only
atool for big productions?
Ethan Wetzell: Absolutely not. The N8000-1500 is a
unique tool for live production, however, it opens
up a whole new level of possibilities for installed,
commercial, or distributed systems as well. The
processing power we have available now is great
for FIR filters, but it is also used to create larger
Automixers, more sophisticated processing paths
for installed applications, and to provide more options and possibilities for installed systems as well.
Unique tools that we have added, such as the FIRDrive Array Controller are geared toward live production, but are equally at home with an installed
system, and the greater DSP resources are useful
to anyone who has an application for NetMax.
NEWSFLASH: After the Jan Smit shows, Axel
Nagtegaal spoke of a “whole new era in concert
sound.” Was he right?
Ethan Wetzell: I couldn’t agree more. While the
N8000-1500 provides a new level of processing power for the industry, IRIS-Net provides an easy and
convenient way to control that power. A feature is
only as good as it is easy to use, and we recognize the unique needs of live production. Tools such
as the FIR-Drive Array Controller and the IRIS-Net
Project Generator allow a user to set up, configure, and control a complete system in minutes rather than hours, while at the same time receiving the
benefits of both the extreme power FIR-Drive technology can offer and the monitoring, supervision,
and reliability that IRIS-Net and NetMax have provided the industry for years.
NEWSFLASH: Do you know anything about new
tour projects using the N8000-1500?
Ethan Wetzell: The N8000-1500 has come out at the
perfect time: just as the world is preparing for the
2009 concert and touring season. Our friends on
the Kenny Chesney tour will be deploying the
N8000-1500 on the next leg of their tour beginning
in March, expanding their already legendary system to include our latest technology. The N80001500 will also be used at this year’s Houston Rodeo,

bringing FIR-Drive technology to 73,000 people
per night for the three-week run. And this is just
the start.

MIDAS PRO6 LIVE AUDIO SYSTEM
DIGITAL, WITH HERITAGE
The extremely compact PRO6 console combines the technology of the successful XL8, which has set new
standards as a modular digital system, with the analogue virtues of the XL3, XL4, and Heritage

groundbreaking XL8, the PRO6 offers the same
exemplary sample-synchronised audio performance in a compact package.
Although the PRO6 standard system comprises a Control Centre with a footprint comparable to a 32 channel Verona and only two 7U 19”
rack units, its diminutive size belies an ability to
provide up to 80 simultaneous input processing
channels and up to 32 (+3) discrete mixes, all of
which feature EQ and dynamics processing options. By adding additional I/O hardware the
PRO6’s network can be expanded up to 264 inputs
and 264 outputs. These connections can be patched
and routed on a scene-by-scene basis, by use of
the PRO6’s powerful snapshot automation.
The PRO6’s FX and dynamics algorithms are
more than high quality, easy-to-use Linux-based
FX processing. They are incorporated within the
PRO6’s automatic delay management system, so
that wherever they are patched, the audio will
be absolutely phase-coherent when summed
into the mix.
The Midas microphone preamp has become
the benchmark throughout the audio world, and
its current expression in the PRO6 sounds better than ever. Still built from discrete components, and based on the designs which were so
successful in Midas analogue consoles such as
the XL3, XL4 and Heritage, the PRO6’s dual (analogue and digital) gain stages enable users to
shape the mic amps’ character according to preference.
The PRO6’s Control Centre has been designed
as the optimum size for its function. All controls
are within easy reach, and the concept of “bringing the console to the engineer” is fully exploited, freeing the mix engineer from thinking in
terms of “layers” or “pages”. Instead, the PRO6
uses configurable colour-coded VCA and
POPulation groups, which are deployed onto the

control surface at the push of a button. This method was pioneered on the Midas XL8 Live
Performance System, which is acclaimed by live
sound engineers worldwide as making console
navigation faster and more intuitive. Midas has
designed the PRO6 Control Centre entirely
around this concept, using different colours to
navigate input channels in the same way that
engineers have traditionally used coloured tape
and fader knobs to aid in console navigation.

before summing, resulting in absolute phase coherency at all outputs.
The Midas PRO6 feels, as well as sounds, superb. All variable controls on the console are genuine potentiometers, not encoders. These

Among the first companies to order the new
PRO6 were the Irish rental companies MG Audio
and Murt Whelan Sound and Lighting, each of
which ordered a PRO6 system from their local
dealer Sound Communications. MG Audio and
Murt Whelan, based respectively on the east
and south west coasts of Ireland, are among the
best-known rental companies on the Emerald
Isle, handling between them not only a variety
of festivals but also major tours on a regular basis.
When it comes to consoles, Whelan relies
exclusively upon Midas; in addition to the new
PRO6, his company’s inventory boasts a number
of Verona, Siena and Venice consoles. “I’ve been
working with Midas for eight years now,” says
Whelan. “I heard at the end of 2007 that Midas
was bringing out a smaller version of the XL8, so
I placed a provisional order back in January 2008
for the PRO6.”
Darran McGoldrick of MG Audio has also been
working with Midas for years. On the strength of
the numerous positive experiences he has had
with the Legend, Siena and Venice consoles, he
ordered a PRO6 at the PLASA show. McGoldrick
is convinced that for the professional user
there is no alternative to Midas. “With the advent of digital technology in the mixing console
market, the flexibility it offers can all too often
outweigh the end result: the sound quality,” he
says.
“This becomes more apparent when touring
internationally and doing one-off gigs of 50 or 60
channels, when time and schedules rather than
the preference of the engineer determine the
choice of console. So when the long-awaited
phrase, ‘Digital goes Midas’ came my way, it was
the logical step to finally combine both user
choice and excellent sound quality.”

and Porcupine Tree, Bond jumped at the chance to own Midas’ groundbreaking digital technology and audio performance in a compact,
more affordable package.
“I've always been a fan of Midas analogue
consoles, so stepping up to Midas digital seemed
a logical step, and I was keen to order a PRO6,”
he says. “Midas built quality and reliability also
played a large part in my decision, and of course,
the most important thing about any console is
how it sounds. The PRO6 sounds like a Midas
should: warm, but still accurate.”
“I also really like the speed at which you can
navigate around the control surface (GUIs), and
get to all the features easily. And just like the
XL8, it has VCA (variable control association)
and POP (population) groups to make things even
quicker.”
The PRO6—which has joined the inventory of
Bond’s rental company IPB Audio—went
straight out onto Marillion’s Happiness is the
Road tour with FOH engineer Rod Brunton, before Bond got behind the controls for some Oleta
Adams dates. Into 2009, the PRO6 is scheduled
for further Marillion and Porcupine Tree tours.

the first 100 orders came flooding in. Among UK purchasers are the renowned rental companies
(and XL8 users) SSE and Britannia Row. Explains Britannia Row’s Mike Lowe: “We’ve come to expect fantastic performance from the XL8. We expect the same now from the PRO6.” SSE’s John
Penn adds: “Since the launch of the XL8, Midas has further developed the software and improved the features. The occasion for the show was a jubilee: The
City of Quebec’s 400th. In order to celebrate the
occasion with suitable style, the city fathers
booked ex-Beatle and music legend Paul
McCartney. More than 260,000 spectators attended, eager to witness the spectacle—a crowd
for which the organizers were well-prepared.
Patrick “Pat” Gagnon of the production company Le Group SPL recalls:
“We knew all about the pulling power of Paul
McCartney and had already reckoned with an
audience of around 250,000. That is why we opted for a massive Electro-Voice sound reinforcement system.” The main PA was an X-Line, driven—along with EV CP4000 amplifiers—by
P3000RL amplifiers controlled via IRIS-Net.
“This configuration gives you a great feeling,”
explains Gagnon, “IRIS-Net keeps you constantly informed of the power, headroom, and status
of every component. With a production of this
scale, that’s an incalculable advantage.”
When it came to set up delay lines, the team
from Le Group SPL preferred a safe approach: a
cluster of XLC127DVX and XLE181 speakers underpinned by X-Subs was driven by conventio-
nal P3000 amps controlled via NetMax N8000.
For monitoring, Le Group SPL team relied on 24
Electro-Voice Xw15A loudspeakers.

Glastonbury Festival, winning not only praise
but also a repeat booking for 2009
Last year’s system deployed 10 X-Line Xvls and
two Xvlt per side, with 10 Xsubs per side
ground-stacked on towers, and another 12 Xsubs
on the floor. Front-fills were handled by six XLE
cabinets. All amps were P3000RLs running
IRIS-Net. The FOH console was a Midas XL4,
with a Heritage 3000 on stage with Helix and a
Rapide for EQ. Wedges were EV Xw15 with drum
and side-fill provision from X-Array systems.
APR’s Matt Gunter was on hand as Crew Chief
and primary system designer for the Jazz World
stage. “Jazz World is generally regarded as the
musicians’ stage,” says Gunter. “It’s where the
real musical talent plays. The stage is respected by the performers, engineers, and audiences
because of the consistency of the sound. Jazz
World uses the same PA every year, and we al-

ways bring a good, experienced crew.”
APR Audio also supplied an XLC system for
the Cinema Field, flying 15 XLC127DVX, with three
units on the ground for centers. The rig was also
prowered by P3000RL amps running IRIS-Net.
“This was a major improvement on the system
we gave them last year,” adds Gunter, “and on
the Friday night, I had already received a text
from the field saying how blown away people
were by the system, and suggesting we do it
again in 2009!”
About the Glastonbury Festival
Glastonbury in Somerset, England, is the setting
for the world’s biggest music and theatre festival. The 2008 line-up included Amy Winehouse,
James Blunt, Crowded House, The Verve,
Leonard Cohen, and Neil Diamond, with the Fun

MORE THAN JUST ANOTHER DAY AT THE RACES

summer by Britannia Row for the hugely successful Newmarket Nights events at the famous English
racecourse. Its biggest test to date? The 25,000 who turned out for Canadian rock legend Bryan Adams
Newmarket has ever seen,” says Allen.
“Previously, the biggest was 20,000. The XLC cabinets with the new DVX low-frequency/midbass woofers are ideal for this project.
Depending on the artist and the crowd size, the
system spec varies between six and nine cabinets per side. For Bryan Adams, Shuttlesound
provided EV super-compact XLE cabinets to
stretch the system to its limits. The quality of the
system is excellent, and the dispersion is phenomenal—because there are only fields beyond
the racecourse, the sound goes for days; you
can hear it in Newmarket town, five miles away.”
Newmarket Nights — a success formula
Sport and music often gel to perfection, and the
popular Newmarket Nights’ horse races and
concerts certainly prove that point. The events
are organized by Liz Hobbs Concerts & Events
Ltd., and have proved so successful that the formula is being adapted at leading racecourses
all over the UK.

explains the reasons for the change:
“The turning point came with Status Quo,
where a small system had been provided for
5,000 people, and then 20,000 turned up! Since
then, the organizers have steadily upped the
ante, and are now booking headliners like Bryan
Adams and Girls Aloud. The sound systems have
been upgraded to keep pace.”
Of all the racecourses that host the post-race
concerts, Newmarket is an oddity. According to
Allen: “The audience area is very wide at about
120 meters, but relatively shallow, as they stand
between the grandstands and the racetrack.
Front-to-back, the distance is just 45 meters, but
there are corporate hospitality areas on the other
side of the track. We can take a standard confi-
guration to all the other courses, but at
Newmarket we need wider coverage, with additional side-hangs.”
Bryan Adams attracted nearly 25,000 people
to the Newmarket course, and the PA system
had to be extended accordingly. EV Tour Grade
amplifiers ran beneath the stage, controlled by
a NetMax system processor, which sent signals
to both main left and right arrays of nine XLC DVX
cabinets. On one side of the stage, two additional clusters with four XLC boxes each were
flown from the grandstand, facing the crowd. On
the opposite side, in addition to a four cabinet
cluster of XLC, a tower of six XLE cabs was provided to handle the far field. In total, 18 Xsubs
were used. IRIS-Net software managed systemcheck diagnostics, and EV LAPS software was
used to work out the angles for the XLC hangs.

At this year’s Metamorphose festival in Izu,
Japan, Ortofon relied on a DYNACORD Cobra

headliners including The Flaming Lips and

The night of August 23 was a long one in Izu,
as it coincided with Metamorphose, the country’s largest all-night music festival. More than
30 acts – most of the electronica genre – performed on three main stages and several smaller
stages. The acts included Galaxy 2 Galaxy,
Cobblestone Jazz, Josh Wink, Theo Parrisch,
Joe Claussell, The Flaming Lips, Tortoise, and DJ
Krush.
The challenge for the team from Ortofon was
to design a system that could provide the 25,000
fans at the Cycle Sports Centre with the ultimate in high-resolution, high-volume sound all night

shipyards. On Sept. 28, the 315-metre leviathan,
with its registered tonnage of 122,000 RT, left the
wharf in Papenburg – with the eyes of the world
upon it – and sailed down the Ems to Eemshaven
in the Netherlands.
The Celebrity Solstice has some 1,425 cabins
(90 percent with balconies), a “Lawn Club” (with
real grass), a glass museum, and a multitude of
exclusive restaurants.
“We are extremely proud of this innovative
new liner,” commented Bernhard Meyer of
Meyer-Werft, “which is of a class notable for its
extreme energy efficiency and the numerous environmentally friendly solutions on board.”
Such solutions for Meyer-Werft tend to include sound systems from Bosch Communications Systems. Since 1985, more than 25 cruise
liners built by the venerable North German company have boasted sound reinforcement systems
from Electro-Voice and DYNACORD – often in
combination with mixers from Midas, sound processors from Klark Teknik, and intercom systems

ON TOP WITH THE COBRA
The Dansefestival in Sel, which ran from July 8 to
13, 2008, is the most popular annual music festival in
Norway. Sound reinforcement for the main stage

lovers made its way to the small Norwegian village of Sel in July for the Dansefestival, where
more than 50 acts appeared including The
Monroes, Casanova, Grass, and Something
New.

MultiTechnic AS. The team from MultiTechnic

Star DJ Joe T Vannelli is establishing a growing reputation as the operator of first-class
discotheques. Not surprisingly, alpha systems

February and mid-June 2008
When an in-demand, world-renowned disc
jockey and producer opens his own discotheque,
one thing is clear: he is fulfilling a long cherished dream. Such was the case when Joe T.
Vannelli, the internationally renowned Italo-house and techno DJ purchased an aging discotheque in the town of Mestre in northern Italy. With
the help of architect Massimo Cadamuro,
Vannelli set out to transform the discotheque

the acoustics of the various guest areas – would
satisfy the highest international standards. The
result is the Area Venezia. After his first and
highly successful six months in Mestre, Vannelli
took over a second discotheque, the Canniccia

he has approached with the same philosophy.
Based on his experiences in some of the finest
discotheques in the world, Joe T. Vannelli knows
that the success of any venue depends heavily
upon the quality of its sound system. So Vannelli
chose state-of-the-art alpha systems from

The German Theatre has temporarily relocated
to a colony of marquees on the outskirts of
Munich. A key role in the new venue has been
assigned to DYNACORD and Electro-Voice evacuation and sound reinforcement systems
An extensive programme of renovation and refitting has required the “Deutsches Theater” in
Munich to temporarily bid farewell to its home
in the city centre. Its new home is a colony of
marquees in the suburb of Fröttmaning. Despite
the move, which was carried out in mid-October,
the theatre continues to meet the highest standards—especially in terms of sound reinforcement.
The company performing the installation, minos Sicherheitstechnik GmbH, was told to attach
paramount importance to the intelligibility alarm
messages; but in addition to voice alarm duties,
the system had to be capable of providing background music as well as gong signals. To satisfy these requirements while remaining under
budget, minos’ planners opted for a PROMATRIX
4000 system from DYNACORD complemented by
loudspeakers from Electro-Voice. Comprehensive 3D simulations were conducted to ensure
there would be adequate intelligibility in all the
requisite areas.
“To create the room model, we had to enter
not only the dimensions of the area to be
covered but also the nature and position of all
Temporary accommodation, unwavering standards: the German Theatre, Munich
relevant surfaces,” reports Thomas Sterling of
EVI Audio. “These included the tarpaulin forming
the walls and ceiling of the marquees and the
upholstery of the chairs in the stalls. Only after
taking every factor into account could we be
sure that the projected loudspeaker configuration would be capable of delivering the results
desired.”
The simulations made it possible to precisely tailor the installation to the new venue. The ideal configuration involves the use of truss-mounted Electro-Voice Sx300PIX speakers in the
1,700-seater main marquee and truss-mounted
EV EVID 4.2T speakers in the ancillary marquees.
Coverage is also provided in the walkways and
open spaces between marquees as well as in the
rest rooms, dressing rooms, and stage and
wardrobe areas. The system is powered by a
2,000-watt amp rack.

Church in New Brunswick is providing the coverage and intelligibility of a world-class theatre sound system
“From the beginning I knew the DYNACORD solution was perfect for this facility,” says Mike
Jones of Signature Sound, which designed and
installed the system, “and after hearing the system demo, the customer agreed. The main system is a Cobra-4, but without the far cabinets—
each array comprises four top boxes. Two boxes from each hang cover the main floor with
support from VariLine VL 262 front fills; the other
two per side cover the deep balcony area. The
balcony seats around 700, so we needed to en-
sure good coverage. The room is about 80 feet
deep, so we didn’t need the long throw of the far
boxes; we simply processed the top of each array independently using the DSP 244 (part of the
dedicated Cobra-4 drive rack), and only minimal
tweaking was required. The Front-of-House position was built into the balcony, so the soundman has a Cobra-4 as his near-field monitors!

Rich in tradition, the Roskilde Festival is now
established as the largest music festival in
Northern Europe and boasts an attractive fringe programme
The 38th annual Roskilde Festival in 2008 ran
from June 29 to July 6 and attracted some 110,000
guests, who were treated in the course of the
eight days to a superlative programme in which
more than 170 top-class live acts—including
Radiohead, Neil Young, The Chemical Brothers,
Jay-Z, Slayer, and Grinderman—helped add to
the world-class reputation of the festival.
In addition to a variety of musical offerings, the
colourful fringe programme offered diversity of
its own as well as a welcome change of pace.
One of the most popular highlights in 2008 was
a mobile cinema. The cinema is equipped with
state-of-the-art components and a sixtysquare-metre screen, and is housed in a marquee with seats for more than 700 movie-goers.
In terms of audio performance, this travelling
picture show was perfectly capable of holding
its own with the most modern big city multiplexes. Credit for this is due to the Danish rental
company Jespers Rejsebiograf and the Herlevbased cinema sound specialist Kinovox. Ib
Sigismund, a product specialist with Kinovox,
summed up the challenge with which they were
faced: “We were not dealing here with a normal
cinema auditorium but with a tent – and yet the
need was for homogeneous coverage and optimal intelligibility. Clearly the equipment used had
a crucial role to play.”
After careful analysis, the team of experts
drawn from Jespers Rejsebiograf and Kinovox
decided in favour of Electro-Voice systems, specifically fifteen Electro-Voice XLE line array tops
(five each left, centre and right), eight EV ZX5
loudspeakers and two XDS subwoofers from the
X-Array series. The results were a joy to hear –
in Dolby Surround quality.

NEW BENCHMARK WITH EV
With the support of E-Audio Benelux, Pieee
Solutions recently installed a new sound system in the 17,000-seat DSB Stadion, home of
the Dutch first division soccer team AZ Alkmaar
The new system offers optimal coverage and
consists of sixteen clusters of three, as well as
four clusters of two Electro-Voice FRX+660PI
weatherized speaker systems. The clusters form
pairs but can be controlled individually, making
it possible for the stadium announcer to direct
messages to particular sections of the crowd.
To ensure the highest possible degree of system reliability, the team from Pieee Solutions opted for (in all seven) Electro-Voice N8000 loudspeaker controllers; Electro-Voice TG7 amplifiers
with integrated RCM-26 modules permit the for-
mation via CobraNet of a convenient fiber optic
ring network. This means that before every
match, the system can be tested in its entirety
at the push of a button to guarantee flawless
performances at every event.
In the press room and the various lounges located in different areas of the stadium complex,
the sound reinforcement is also supplied by
Electro-Voice, with Pieee Solutions opting inter
alia for EV FRX+, seventy EV EVID 6.2, as well as
twenty EV ZX1, speaker systems. “The days
when all-round loudspeakers were all you needed in a stadium are long past,” explains E-Audio
Benelux MD Axel Nagtegaal. “The DSB Stadion
installation is the epitome of a state-of-the-art
solution. With Electro-Voice equipment in place
there, we have set a new benchmark for stadium sound in the Netherlands.”

Autostadt technical director Christian Kiel and
his team invested eight weeks preparing for the
event. During this time the facility power plant
was converted into the perfect events location,
capable of accommodating as many as 1,000
guests at a time. Sound reinforcement is provided not just for the auditorium but for the entire
building complex. 24 sends are controlled by the
XL8 at the front-of-house position, which also
functions as a central control room for the alarm
and announcement system, and as a router for
all signals entering and leaving the location. A
network makes it child’s-play to distribute audio
signals to any part of the plant. “We remain in
the digital domain the whole time all the way to
the power amplifiers removing the need for A/D
converters in the signal chain,” explains
Technical Director Andreas Meier. “That is an
unassailable advantage, particularly when considering the enormous variety of events taking
place here in the course of the Movimentos festival.” Aside from the practical advantages offered by such a solution, the acoustic ones are obvious. “With this system, the problem of hiss is
eliminated altogether,” says Meier.
Whilst the XL8 at the front-of-house position
was used throughout the entire festival, the second XL8 at the monitor position was reserved
exclusively for concerts. The XL8 used at frontof-house is operated by Tobias Kiemann, an experienced FOH engineer well-versed in the finer
points of the XL8. “Even though the requirements
of the various performers and dance companies
are often very particular and the production managers of the Autostadt are very insistent upon
the highest level of stability and reliability being
maintained at all times, the XL8 front-of-house
offers more than sufficient capacity to handle
even the most unusual setups.” Nor did anyone
throughout the entire festival exhibit the slightest trepidation at being confronted with a digital console: “To the contrary; in most cases the
briefest of introductions was sufficient for the ice
to be broken. In terms of sound quality, Midas is
invariably synonymous with excellence, but with
the XL8 you have, as a technician, the added advantages of unbelievably flexible routing and
configuration options. Last but not least,” he added, “the XL8 really feels like a mixer – the faders have feel and the controls can be manipulated like those of a conventional desk.”
An unusual feature of the network solution involving the two digital consoles is the strict separation of the analogue and digital domains.
Whilst the two desks form a peer-to-peer network, their analogue input sections (featuring

three discrete preamps offering the characteristic Midas sound) remain independent. “In the
case of the classic application, for example
sound reinforcement for a concert, with separate FOH and monitor mixes, each position has
its own independently controllable analogue
gain stage, and the subsequent routing of inputs
(e.g. their assignment to mixer channels) is also
handled independently,” says Kiemann. Already
in its second year of operation, the redundant
network structure of the XL8 has proved not only
impervious to interference but also fail-safe.

R.E.M. toured the world from May to November with Midas and Klark Teknik

The tour follows the band’s critically acclaimed
release “Accelerate”. Two Midas XL8 consoles
and the new Klark Teknik DN9696 high resolution hard disk recorder were provided by Rat
Sound (Oxnard, CA). The XL8s were manned by
engineers Brett Eliason (FOH) and George
Squiers (MON). To prepare for the R.E.M. tour,
Squiers met with Matt Larson (Americas Sales
Manager, Midas and Klark Teknik) and Jon
Monson (Rat Sound) to get a feel for the XL8. He
was thrilled immediately: “It’s the best-sounding
digital console I’ve used, and it’s the most analogue-feeling digital console I’ve used. The digital domain is amazing, and I jumped into it
wholeheartedly, but at the same time I still want
the analogue sound and feel. The area A and B
simultaneous functionality is also great. We’re
running both in-ears and wedges, and the XL8
will automatically drive to my cue in-ears when
I solo an in-ear mix, and drive to my cue wedge
when I solo a stage wedge. Add the sound quality to that flexibility, and you have the best of
both worlds for a monitor engineer.”
Brett Eliason shares his opinion: “I’ve been
an XL4 fan for a long time, and that’s what I used
on my last tour with R.E.M. We were full up on
the last tour—that desk was packed. We also
had some day-to-day issues with the 300-feet
analogue snake run, as you do. Knowing that we
could cure all that with the XL8 was a key part
of the decision process.”
The Klark Teknik DN9331 Rapide moving-fa-
der graphic EQ controller is another detail that
brings hands-on user-friendliness to the digital
realm. The DN9696 high resolution hard disk recorder is integrated into the XL8 as an I/O option and very simple to use. “I can start the recording using the KVM switch on the XL8 work surface, without any of the usual concerns about
outboard recording equipment”, says Eliason.
“The fact that it’s a 24-bit/96k system is also extremely attractive. The fact that the DN9696 mirrors to external hard drives during the show
means the content is archived immediately; I
don’t need to spend an hour backing stuff up the
next day. And the recordings sounded excellent.”
Bill Rahmy, R.E.M. Production Manager: “The
band is at the top of their game, they run deep,
and the engineers both run deep as well. The
XL8 is a unique-sounding console that matches
that collective depth.”
A SOUND FORMULA FOR ALL GENRES: MIDAS XL8
Tour engineers are naming the Midas XL8 Live Performance System as their console of choice. Both rock legends Aerosmith as well as Led
Zeppelin have used the XL8 Live Performance System for sensational productions (see previous newsflash coverage). It also proved to be a valuable support at these live highlights: Britannia Row relied on the XL8 for Rihanna’s Europe Tour in 2008 +++ Norwegian Pop-Stars a-ha had sold
out various concerts in the summer of 2008. FOH-engineer Sven Persson worked with an XL8. +++ Britannia Row made available an XL8 for a set
by The Streets at the Electric Proms in Camden. Shan Hira, The Streets’ sound engineer, had already formed a decidedly positive impression of
the Midas flagship when working with The Chemical Brothers at the T in the Park festival and declared: “It’s simply the console with the best sound. There’s no doubt about it.” +++ In 2008 King Crimson opted for the XL8 as well as a Klark Teknik DN9696 hard-disk recorder for their first US
tour in five years. FOH Engineer Ian Bond commented: “I needed it because it’s the best and most multi-facetted system on the market for both live

NEWSFLASH: How was 2008 for you?
Biff Byford: Oh, it was fantastic, we had a great year! We did a lot of festivals
that we haven't done for quite a long time, such as the "Download Festival" and
others. It's a good tour to finish with.
NEWSFLASH: You’ve been on tour with Saxon for the last couple of weeks.
They’ve been using the new Electro-Voice PL series microphones. What are
your impressions?
Torben Ibs: I’m very impressed with the new PL80, which offers very high gain
before feedback. That makes life easier for the monitor engineer and for me
working FOH. The off-axis rejection is important because the backline on stage is so loud. We’ve got about six or eight cabinets turned full up and it was
always hard for me in the past to keep the guitars out of the vocal mics.
NEWSFLASH: Saxon has become an Electro-Voice mic endorser lately. You’re
using a REV wireless system with a handheld that is equipped with a N/D767
capsule. What freedom does this system give you?
Biff Byford: Well, it gives you freedom – and the guitars don’t knock the microphone out of your mouth when you trip over the leads. You know, you can walk
around—which is good, especially at big festivals. As headliners, we have quite a big stage where we go up on ramps and other things, so it’s good for that.
And the wireless system has been really great. No faults at all.
NEWSFLASH: What are your plans for 2009?
Biff Byford: Our new album will be released in January. Then we’ll be back on
tour in February...with Electro-Voice.

this particular case, I’m using a XL3. Yeah, these consoles handle the levels and
they’ve got enough headroom for this kind of music.

Twenty participants from Saudi Arabia, Jordan,
Turkey, and Lebanon attended the Telex RoIP
Radio Dispatching Academy in Istanbul in early
October. Conducted by Dan Bixby and Paul
Mayer, the three-day workshops dealt primarily
with Telex radio dispatch systems. In addition to
a number of lectures outlining the latest technological developments from a theoretical perspective, the radio and VoIP experts attending the
course were offered plenty of opportunity for
practice-oriented, hands-on training.
“Academies are an essential method of making
the advantages of our radio IP solutions understood in each country,” explains Kamil
Swobodzinski, Sales Director ACT&CCS for the
regions Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. “We
rely on well-trained Academy participants.”
The Milan-based CPM Music Institute is one of
Italy’s most prestigious conservatoires of popular music. It offers a solid musical education in
the genres Pop/Rock, World/Ethno, and Jazz. The
syllabus of the prestigious academy also includes such subjects as Producing, Recording, and
The Music Business. To guarantee the stars of
tomorrow the finest audio equipment to work
with, EVI Audio’s Italian partners Texim and
dSound Pro have been providing the Institute
with equipment from Electro-Voice, DYNACORD,
Midas and Klark Teknik. Now the more than
2,000-square metre facility boasts loudspeaker
systems, mixers, and microphones of professional quality.
In the summer of 2008, EVI Audio’s Polish distributor Audio Plus celebrated its tenth birthday—
with a concert sound academy, a live gala, and
the announcement that in future it would also
be distributing the brands Midas and Klark
Teknik in Poland
For the purpose of distributing Midas and Klark
Teknik products in Poland, a new subsidiary has
been created called “Midas Consoles Poland”.
“Now that Audio Plus is able to offer the entire
concert sound spectrum—the full signal chain
from microphone to console to processor to power amplifier to enclosure, we’ll be in a position like never before to drive the agenda of the
Polish pro audio market. We have every reason
to look to the future with confidence.” Every reason indeed, as with the festivities barely over,
the company was able to report the sale of a
new batch of Electro-Voice line array systems,
two Midas Heritage 3000 consoles and (for the
first time ever in Poland) a Midas XL8 Live
Performance System.

MUNICH FUN RUN
BOSCH CROWNED “MOST
ORIGINAL TEAM”
Thirty thousand runners—150 Bosch employees among them—took part
in Munich’s Corporate Fun Run on the 24th July 2008. The Bosch4Speed
team won first prize for originality
With dance steps custom-choreographed for the occasion and a converted handcart providing a lightshow, sound from DYNACORD loudspeakers
and refreshments, the fleet-footed delegation from the production facilities in Ottobrunn, Straubing and Nuremberg won all hearts as it made its
way to the Olympic Stadium—where the Uffing-based rental company
TC Showtechnik, responsible this year for the sound reinforcement, was
waiting with an Electro-Voice XLD line array.
