GAMESPEAK – FEDERATED HOCKEY LEAGUE NEWSLETTER June 28, 2011 Vol. 1, No. 13 VS . The FHL crowned a new champion May 16, 2011 in a closely contested 7 game series that saw Cliff Dolgins of the NY Dolphins take “The Crystal.” This championship victory had special meaning for the FHL since it was the inaugural season. Stamkos, despite being the Dolphins lynch pin scoring 49 goals for a FHL best in the regular season, struggled through most of the post season. However in game 7 he came through and was named 2nd Star in game 7 with 1 assist and 1 goal which turned out to be the game winning goal. Stamkos told Gamespeak during the on ice celebration in NY “This was a total team effort. Jaro(slav Halak) played tremendous in net. The entire organization is a class act.” Dolphin goaltender Jaroslav Halak was named MVP of the Finals with a stellar 0.928 Save PCT. (for the entire post season) that lead all post season goalies. Coach Dolgins told Gamespeak Online "I just feel real bad he (Coach Francoeur) couldn’t coach the last period. Whether it would have made a difference or not at least he goes down fighting with his coaching. I was up 2-1 with 1:29 left in second when unfortunately (the) game crashed. I killed off a two man (down) penalty in 3rd and went on to score twice more in a 41 win. He (Coach Francoeur) wanted to play Toews against Stamkos’ line. I tried not to let him have that matchup at all in this game or barely at all. Actually my 4th line has been key this round and they have scored vs. that line on numerous occasions so guess that was more reason to stick with it.” Gamespeak caught up with Coach Francoeur in the losing locker room and he told us "Congrats to Cliff. We will be back stronger next year..." NY and Quebec squared off in game 7. Both teams came out feeling each other out SOG 3 and NY got the first break on a Rick Nash hooking penalty at 7:13 of the first period. Quebec killed it off and the game remained scoreless until a Erik Staal hold at 6 13:30. NY wasted no time winning the draw and Scottie Upshall scored from 5 NYD 44 50 66.7 26 14 10 6 2-3 8:57 Star 1: NYD Ryan 1 G, 3 Pts Star 2: NYD Stamkos 1 G, 2 Pts Star 3: NYD Halak 25 saves GWG: Steven Stamkos Notables: QND Nabokov 40 saves NYD Hanzal 18 faceoffs Whitney and Ryan at 13:30 for the first goal of the game. Quebec caught a bad break at 19:36 of the period when Rick Nash received a 4 minute penalty for drawing blood on Andrei Markov and NY started with the power play in period 2. NY had a 21-14 shot advantage in period one. Steven Stamkos (Mr. Invisible in the playoffs) re-directed a Markov shot at 2:08 of period two for NY’s second Power play goal and a 2-0 lead. Quebec responded by coming out flying off the goal and Erik Staal scored on an up ice rush assisted by Jamie Langenbrunner and Thomas Vanek to make it 2-1 with 14:42 left in the second. The game remained 2-1 until 1:29 left in the second when unfortunately the game froze and because of the resume game function not working Johnny was no longer able to coach his team. The period ended at 2-1 with NY out shooting Quebec 18-6 in the second period and 39-20 overall. The refs had put their whistles away for over a period but called a tighter game in the third. Bryan Little was nabbed at :48 seconds for holding giving Quebec their first power play of the game. Quebec managed two shots and NY blocked three to kill off the penalty. Jason Spezza was then penalized at 3:31 for holding giving Quebec another power play. Steven Stamkos then was called for interference 19 seconds later and Quebec had a two man advantage. NY penalty killers were all over the ice holding Quebec to only one shot on goal killing off the 5 on 3. Erik Staal then hit the post with 13:28 left keeping it a 2-1 game. Steven Stamkos then knocked Tim Gleason off the puck leading to a 2 on 1 rush and Jason Spezza capitalized to make it 3-1 NY with 12:45 to play. NY added some insurance with a Bobby Ryan deflection on an Erik Johnson shot with 4:36 to play giving NY a 4-1 win. NY out shoots Quebec 44-26 but the key stat probably is winning 50 of 75 face offs when all series it seemed to go Quebec’s way won on the draws. Martin Hanzel won an amazing 18 of 21 faceoffs and those were mainly vs. Quebec’s top line and when short handed. The three stars awarded by the game were: #1 Bobby Ryan 1 goal and 2 assists, #2 Stamkos 1 goal and an assist , #3 Halak 25 saves. But I would give #1 to Halak who stopped 3 odd man rushes , #2 Hanzal for all his defensive play and #3 Stamkos for the goal and assist -9 shots, 2 hits and the key goal to make it 2-0. There are several new faces that many of you may have noticed during the recent trade talks. This is a long overdue welcome to the new leadership of the franchises of the FHL. Unless otherwise mentioned, teams will stay in their current division. Becomes Terre Haute Golden Retrievers now becomes Johnston (Pennsylvania) Chiefs. In a brief news conference after transfer of ownership to Eric Baluth Gamespeak recorded: “I'd like to express my humble gratitude on being invited into the FHL but at the same time I'd like to call my shot as most improved team next year! Although the cup may be a year or so away there is no other member who will work harder to improve his/her team in the 2011 - 2012 season. I take pride in my skills on the ice and now I look forward to the opportunity to use my experience and knowledge of the greatest game on earth to cement the Johnstown Chiefs as a perennial powerhouse in the FHL! Thanks again for the opportunity, Eric (Baluth). Becomes The Topeka Tarantulas are now under new management of Kent Grey who promptly moved the team to sunny California and they are christened the California Zephyrs. They officially move to the West Division of the National Conference. Gamespeak got a unique opportunity to hear about Kent Grey on Gamespeak Online and here is his bio: My name is Kent Gray. I am 44 and live in a suburb of Sacramento, CA. However, I have lived in 8 States, while visiting 49 States and 15 countries. I am a long time sports fan. I started as a kid with the traditional big three plus golf. I was introduced to hockey by the 1980 Olympics and never looked back. My favorite hockey team is Vancouver, but come the playoffs I watch about 80% or more of the games no matter who is playing because I love the sport. I walked away from the MLB and the NBA about 10 years ago and have moved on to Soccer, Rugby, and Aussie Football among others. Additionally, I volunteer for the Tour of California when it comes to town (was on TV last year) and never miss a day of the Tour de France. I probably started gaming with the old spin the dials of Cadaco Baseball in the late 1970s. I was introduced to APBA Baseball in 1982 and was off and running. Joined my first league a year later and by 1985 I owned every APBA board game, plus many SOM games too. I converted to APBA computer games in 1989 and stayed the course until about a decade ago. I've played and tried many different Sports Sim games as well. In the mid-1990s I was the APBA Journal's Hockey columnist. GAMESPEAK – FEDERATED HOCKEY LEAGUE NEWSLETTER I've played in numerous baseball and hockey leagues (mostly APBA) and have had a go at both basketball (APBA/Cactus) and football (APC). I found APC in 2006 and restarted my love of Sports Sims. I run the HBHA APC Hockey league today. Outside of sports, I am an attorney and a political activist. I also am involved in community theatre. My first career out of high school was as a radio DJ, which I did for 5 years before going to college. In fact, I was Sports Director for a station in Decatur, IN in the late 1980s and use to go to many of the Ft Wayne Komets' games. I returned to those roots while in law school and called both men's and women's basketball plus women's volleyball games for the Drake University radio station 5 years ago. Kent Becomes The San Angelo Outlaws are now under new management of Jeff Murray and have been moved from San Angelo in central TX to Exton, PA and are now renamed to the Exton Igloos. The Exton Igloos will now move to the East division in the Republic Conference. Gamespeak caught up briefly with the front office of the Exton Igloos and got some information on the new owner/manager/coach: “Age 33, Action sports gamer for 5+ years, active in football and hockey. Married, with 2 boys - age 3 and 2 months. I'm a Project Engineer for a Biomedical company outside of Philadelphia, PA. I grew up watching the Penguins of the early 90's and I think Lemieux was better than Gretzky! Haha!” Becomes The Scranton Blackjacks are not a stranger to anyone in the FHL qualifying for the post season as the 3rd seed in the Republic Conference. However David Sayles, preferring to move his team closer to home, has relocated to Los Angeles, CA and adopting the new team name LA Monarchs. The LA Monarchs will be moved to the West Conference. GAMESPEAK – FEDERATED HOCKEY LEAGUE NEWSLETTER Becomes Joe Paul’s Long Beach Ice Dogs rushed to the top of the Western Division and then made a deep run into the playoffs and came just short of the FHL Finals losing in the National Conference Championships to the Quebec Nordiques in the best of 7 series 4-2. At the end of the season Joe announced his retirement from his ownership position of the Ice Dogs. Joe will be remembered for his aggressive brand of hockey he brought to his team where his Ice Dogs led the team in fights (33) and was 2nd in PIM average per game with 11.9. Bryan Salkowsky has taken over the leadership of this team and moved the team across the country to Florida (to try and make a Sun Belt hockey team work). The new team will be “Florida Everblades” They will move to the East Division. Becomes Gamespeak Online attended the Fort Wayne Komet Press Conference: Fort Wayne, IND.... In a press conference held in the Fort Wayne Komet arena on Saturday, owner/coach Doug Shirley announced what fans knew was coming---the Fort Wayne Komet franchise was moving. Mr. Shirley, the first-year owner who made his fortune in the rare book business and professes to be a life-long sports fan, was thrilled, he stated, to acquire the Fort Wayne franchise when it became available at mid-season last year and was very encouraged by the play of his core of young players. "The Fort Wayne fans were wonderful," he stated, "but the financial opportunities offered in a major metropolitan area were too great to be ignored, and it is with excitement tinged with sadness that I make official the move. Next season will be the first for the team in its new home, Boston, Massachusetts, where they will become the newest team in bean town, the Boston Whalers, and hope to build on the city's tradition of sports excellence." When asked about the impending move, team captain Patrick Kane seemed to share the owner's enthusiasm: "I've been working with Jamie Benn and some of the other guys over the off-season to find a place to live and get familiar with the city. We've had a great time getting acquainted with the locals, walking the Freedom Trail and sampling some of the best seafood around. Boston is a terrific sports town and we are all hoping to make our mark." GAMESPEAK – FEDERATED HOCKEY LEAGUE NEWSLETTER Asked about the Whalers' first pick in the upcoming draft, Kane would only say that he had no doubt the new addition would be a boon to the team, as there are several top-flight players available. Becomes CORSAIRS ANNOUNCE MOVE TO INDIANAPOLIS *** FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE *** Indianapolis, IN (June 8, 2011) -- The Columbia Corsairs became a playoff contender in the inaugural FHL season. Although they missed the postseason, they had a big run at a spot during the regular season. However, due to significant financial losses suffered by the team from dwindling attendance and an antiquated arena at the Carolina Coliseum, Corsairs president and general manager Andrew Smith announced today that his team will be moving to Indianapolis, pending approval of the FHL league office and the other club owners. Pending approval, the team will play in Conseco Fieldhouse, a state-of-the-art arena which seats approximately 14,000 for hockey -- with another 2,000 obstructed-view seats in the upper deck on one end of the building. Most importantly, the arena contains a significant amount of luxury seating in the horseshoe that will surround the rink. "We appreciated our opportunity to try to make it work in Columbia," Smith said. "But one thing that has been proven in the NHL and in our league is that it's very difficult to make hockey work in the Sun Belt. There are a few pockets, and we tried to make it a go, but we couldn't continue at the financial losses we were experiencing." The team will pull back into the past for its nickname. It will be called the Indianapolis Checkers, paying homage to the minor-league team that played in the city from 1979-87 and won two Central Hockey League championships. Its colors will be blue and orange. It also plays into the city's racing heritage, as evidenced in the team's logo. It will be a waving blue-and-orange checkered flag. "We are very excited to be bringing big-time hockey back to my hometown, and we love the atmosphere here," Smith said. "This market is a sports-passionate market that has supported hockey at many levels for years. I'm excited about what the future holds for the Indianapolis Checkers. We have a tremendous core of young goaltenders and some depth on our team that will carry us going forward." The FHL Draft will be commencing shortly, and the 2011-12 season beginning after that. Andrew Smith The Indiana Checkers will relocate to the West Central Conference with their move. GAMESPEAK – FEDERATED HOCKEY LEAGUE NEWSLETTER Becomes John Drach’s NEPA Buccaneers made an announcement and Gamespeak Online was present at the meeting for the press conference: Today the owners of the NEPA Buccaneers have been granted permission by the league to move the team from Pennsylvania to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. When we took over this team during the season it was always our intent to move the team to Canada. We had at first hoped to get a team in British Columbia but a deal for a good venue was not able to be worked out. Winnipeg stepped up and with a new arena we were able to work a deal which should make the team viable for the long haul. It turned out it was not so easy a decision to make in the end. We were welcomed with open arms by the NEPA fans after taking over the team and we have nothing but good things to say about them. However in the end, we felt it was a better long term strategy for the organization to make the move. The team will also be changing their name to the Winnipeg Saints. After the season we just had we're hoping for a little divine intervention from above. We look forward to the new season in Winnipeg and what to thanks everyone for helping make this move in what we think we be a positive one for the league. The Republic Conference The National Conference Eastern Division: West Central Division: Boston Whalers (former Fort Wayne Komets) Columbus Jaguars Exton Igloos (former San Angelo) Indianapolis Checkers (former Columbia Corsairs) Florida Everblades (former Long Beach Ice Dogs) Johnston Chiefs (former Terre Haute) Montreal Canadiens McGregor Condors New York Dolphins Winnipeg Saints (former NEPA) Mid West Division: West Division: Cincinnati Swords California Zephrys (former Topeka Tarantulas) Cleveland Barons Gatineau City Bulldogs Detroit Bandits Kansas City Ice Twisters LA Monarchs (former Scranton Blackjacks) Quebec Nordiques GAMESPEAK – FEDERATED HOCKEY LEAGUE NEWSLETTER All Things Related to the FHL Draft (Rookie and Free Agent): The entire draft will consist of 6 rounds (or possibly more if teams cut below their minimum 26 players they can protect) starting at Round 1 – Round 6. There will be 2 separate drafts: a Rookie draft and a Free Agent Draft. The Rookie Draft will take up Round 1. This will consist of all players who played in the NHL the previous season, that were eligible for the Calder Trophy (NHL Rookie of the Year), and are not on a current FHL team roster. This draft should occur within 1-2 months after the release of the new player stats disk from DKS and/or within a month (approximately) with the start of the regular season. This draft will be held for one round. The Free Agent Draft will consist of all players who played in the NHL the previous season that are not on a FHL team roster after all the FHL team cuts have occurred. Also in the eligible draft pool are the rookies that were not picked up in the Rookie draft (see above paragraph). This draft should be held shortly after the Rookie Draft. A team may pass in any given round; however, once a team passes, the team may not draft again in subsequent rounds of the draft. The order of the draft will be determined by the inverse order of the point total from the previous season, playoffs and playoff results will have effect on this order with the winner of “The Crystal” drafting last, and the runner up drafting 2nd from the last spot (barring traded draft picks, etc.). The draft will be untimed to start with each FHL team averaging one pick per day. If the draft is deemed to be proceeding too slowly by FHL Executive Group, then timed drafts will be instituted with slotted times for picks posted on Gamespeak Online. If you cannot be at a draft, then draft lists are acceptable. If your list doesn’t cover exactly the player you want, then your pick will be auto selected by the APC! Hockey computer draft function. On submitting your lists BE SPECIFIC! Let us know exactly who you want to take and plan for a priority listing of multiple alternatives at each spot you want picked. Roster cuts are required of all FHL Teams down to 26 players (i.e. you can protect up to 26 players on your team). You may protect less if you like if you wish to draft additional rounds. Only 4 goalies can be on a team at any time (to prevent goalie hording). We will then draft up to 32 players. The roster cuts will be due within 1 week after the new DKS player disk is available. There is no salary cap and, unlike the first draft, this will not be a serpentine draft (please see Gamespeak Vol. 1, No. 1, P.2 (inaugural issue) for details of the difference between the two). The Draft will be conducted using Yahoo User’s Group Messenger like last year. Due to problems encountered with the speed of processing of each pick and the questionable service with Yahoo User’s Group, the Free Agent Draft may be conducted using a different User’s Group or via email. For now, however, the FHL plans to use Yahoo User’s Group. All trades must be approved through FHL Executive office with final approval through Assistant Commissioner Chad Pridemore. A spreadsheet is maintained by Chad for all the trades to date since the inception of the league. If you desire a copy, then please email Chad for a copy. GAMESPEAK – FEDERATED HOCKEY LEAGUE NEWSLETTER COACHES CORNER: Luc “Lucky” Savard (owner/manager/coach Gatineau City Bulldogs) shares his mock rookie draft for the upcoming FHL Rookie Draft: The most anticipated moment in the off season is probably the 2011 FHL Entry Draft. One question that comes to mind is how much New York success with an offensive type team will influence the draft? One thing to remember is that New York success in the second half and in the playoffs was due in major part to the acquisition of a top defence in Andrei Markov and net minder Jaroslav Halak. There is little doubt that New York would have probably not even reach the final without Halak in net. Having said this, going into this draft, there is definitely two teams (California (Terre Haute) and Winnipeg (old NEPA)) in search of a starting net minder, and there may be other teams wanting to either improve or acquire a second starter with numerous games played. With only two goalies available with more than 50 games played (Crawford – 57 and Bobrovsky - 54) and only two with more than 30 games played (Reimer – 37 and Dubnyk – 35), teams looking to acquire a goaltender in the draft will need to act rapidly. Given that they all performed very well in the NHL regular season, it would not be surprising to see at least three of them being picked in the first round. There is no doubt that this mock draft list will change as such things as trades, ratings, players situation and owner preference will influence everyone selection. Of course, there are players that may fall back such as Brobovsky after the acquisition of Bryzgalov by Philadelphia and some others that may move into the first round. FHL Draft Order Rookie Draft: 1. Boston Whalers (the old Fort Wayne Komets) This is Doug Shirley first FHL draft and Doug had a good group of young players to select from. With Fleury and Pavelec in net, this team is solid. The defence is decent and can compete with guys such as Suter and Wisniewski. Therefore, Doug will look to improve his offence. Doug is probably looking for versatile forward that can help now! Boston will select: Jeff Skinner 2. Johnston Chiefs (the old Terre Haute Golden Retrievers) We welcome new owner Eric Baluth. Of course, it is Eric first FHL draft as well. This team is solid up front with Ovechkin, Thornton and Selanne. The defence could stand to be improved but guys like Corvo and Regher are solid. The major weakness for this team is in net. With solid back up T. Rask in place, there is little doubt that this team will draft a net minder. Johnston will select: Corey Crawford 3. California Zephrys (the old Topeka Tarantulas) A third team in a row with a first time FHL drafter. FHL welcomes new owner Kent Gray. California could be somewhat concerned with their goalie situation as Hiller, while solid, only played 49 games this last NHL season. Their defence could stand to be improved as it may lack depth. However, with the lost of Sydney Crosby, this team will probably look to add some offence. California will select: Taylor Hall GAMESPEAK – FEDERATED HOCKEY LEAGUE NEWSLETTER 4. Gatineau City Bulldogs Luc Savard, team owner, used a defensive approach last year and drafted a lot of young players. Gatineau is very solid in net with two young starters in Cam Ward and Steve Mason. As some forwards have become more mature, their offense is improving and recent additions of Elias and Neal provides the team with more depth. Their defence could stand to be improved but is it is solid with Doughty, Pietrangelo and the new addition of Marc Staal. Gatineau will probably be looking to add more offence with this pick. Gatineau will select: Jordan Eberle 5. Winnipeg Saints (the old NEPA Buccaneers) Winnipeg is very decent up front with guys like Kesler and Sharp. I am sure John Drach would have loved to see Gaborik play more NHL Games and the offence could use some depth. There defence could stand to be improved but it may not be Winnipeg’s major need as well as they can count on some solid defenseman like Enstrom and Bieksa. There is little doubt that this team needs a goaltender. This maybe too early for the remaining goaltenders but John may not have a choice, unless he trades for one. Winnipeg could go Bobrovsky who has 54 GP or Reimer with 37. It will depend if they are looking long term or short term. John will probably go with the future and find another solution to cover games played Winnipeg will select: J. Reimer 6. Cincinnati Swords Francois Lessard joined the league during the season and it is therefore his first FHL draft. This team is loaded in net with Backstrom, Neuvirth and Lundqvist. The defence is very decent with Byfuglien, Martin and Robidas and it is obvious that this team is in need of some major offense. This team screams for it! Cincinnati will select: Derek Stepan 7. Columbus Jaguars (Tie-Break by winning % against Columbia) Ashlee Pridemore, the league Pridemore’s better half (hahaha) is in heaven! Her two goalies are in the NHL Stanley Cup Final, Thomas and Luongo. Her third goalie is Roloson. Datsyuk and Hossa leads the offense but both of them played a limited number of games in the NHL. The defence needs improvement but may not be her main focus. Unless Ashlee finds help elsewhere, she will mostly draft a forward in the first round. Columbus will select: Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau 8. Indianapolis Checkers (the old Columbia Corsairs) Indianapolis owner Andrew Smith has build a solid team. Quick and Rinne are a solid duo in net. The defence is excellent with Visnovsky, Carle, Burns and Boyle. The offence is also very well rounded with guys such as krejci and St-Louis. This team proved, in the first year, to be able to draft solid veterans and young stars. This team could draft either a forward or a defence. They will certainly go for the future. Columbia will select: Tyler Seguin GAMESPEAK – FEDERATED HOCKEY LEAGUE NEWSLETTER 9. Detroit Bandits What we learned from Chad Pridemore first draft is that he likes Detroit’s players. His team has a solid net minder in Howard. The defence could use some youth for the future but it is not a priority for this year, Rafalski and Lidstrom are more than solid. Chad will certainly draft the best forward available, that is what the team needs for this year. Detroit will select: Mike Santorelli 10. Cleveland Barons Owner Scott kallman put together a solid team last year. This team is build for war with the likes of Chara, Pronger and Wideman on defence and Chris Stewart, Downie, Clowe and Kovalchuk on offense. This team could use a number one center but they will not find one in the draft. In net, there has to be concerned with Craig Anderson as the only viable solution even if he did turn his year around once in Ottawa. They could use some help in net, at least for this year. Cleveland will select: Sergei Brobovsky 11. McGregor Condors Jesse Cheng, league top man, has built a solid team in his first year. In net, Bryzgalov is the man. On offense, Getzlaf, Kopitar and Iginla lead a strong group. Jack Johnson and Timonen give the team a good defensive duo. This team is very close to the cup, even if they were eliminated early by FHL Cup finalist Quebec. If they learned one thing from this matchup is that they need to improve their defence. McGregor will select: Kevin Shattenkirk 12. Exton Igloos (formerly San Angelo) Jeff Murray will lead the Exton Igloos team this year. Exton is being transformed as we speak with the new man in charge. There is a youth movement going on here and all we can say is that we can expect Jeff to pick the best young player. At this time, Jeff can count on Tomas Vokoun in net but as we have seen, Vokoun is now on the market. On defence, the resent trade has left a void but Jeff does feel comfortable on defence and this is normal when you have Duncan Keith leading the way. The offense is solid with Henrik Zetterberg and the recently acquired Logan Couture. Injuries to Malkin and Oshie are a concern and this is one of the reasons that Jeff may be looking to build a solid team for the future. Exton will select: Magnus Paarjavi 13. Gatineau City Bulldogs (from LA Monarchs (formerly Scranton)) This is Gatineau second selection in the first round. Gatineau, as you have read, is solid in net, the offense, while they have no super star, is solid and deep. They should now focus on adding some defensive help. Gatineau will select: Cam Fowler GAMESPEAK – FEDERATED HOCKEY LEAGUE NEWSLETTER 14. Montreal Canadiens Vince Diiorio has proved to be a very strong owner. Montreal is solid in net with Niemi. The defence is solid and lead by Keith Yandle. The offence is also not a concern and Henrik Sedin and Patrick Marleau will, once again, be elite players in this league. Vince, as he has shown last year, will draft the player that fits the team system the better. Montreal will select: Nathan Gerbe 15. Kansas City Ice Twisters Joshua Pohl has no concern. He build such a balance team that he may draft in any direction. In net, Kiprussof and Lethonen are both starters. The defence is also solid with the likes of Schenn and Goligoski. On offense, Backstrom had a down year but that will be overcome with Tavares and Daniel Sedin solid year. Kansas City is probably not worried about position and could use more defence depth. Given that they lost to New York in the playoffs, Joshua may be tempted to add more offence. Kansas City will select: Bryan Bickell 16. Johnston Chiefs Hello new owner Bryan Sakowsky. Bryan takes over a team that can count on one of the league top goaltenders in Ryan Miller. The offence is lead by Brad Richards and well supported by guys such as Laich, Heatley and Burrows. The defence has a solid first pair in Erhoff and Giordano but may need some depth to replace the lost of Rob Blake and Mark Streit. Johnston will select: Anton Babchuk 17. Quebec Nordiques Johnny Francoeur has built a solid team. In net, Carey Price will be the starter and will be supported by a group of young backups in Bernier and Schneider. The defence is the best in the league with Letang, Phaneuf, Myers, Weber, Carlsson and Subban. The offense is solid as well; Toews, Eric Staal, Vanek and Nash will be a concern for all oponents. This team has no needs and will draft the best young player that they feel may help them now and in the future. Quebec will select: Marcus Johansson 18. Boston Whalers (old Fort Wayne (from NY) ) With his second selection in the first round, Doug will probably look to round out his team. Having already drafted Skinner, Fort Wayne can still use more offence and will continue the rebuilding process. Boston will select: Linus Omark Having no selection in the first round, New York will select early in the second round and given that this team is solid, it is not an issue for them. LA Monarchs (a.k.a. the old Scranton Blackjacks) on the other hand has to find scoring punch to replace Zach Parise who only played 13 games last year. Also, there is some concern in Los Angeles about Martin Brodeur who played 56 games and he was not as stellar as he was in the past. Now 39, it may be time for the Monarchs to find a replacement for him. Good Luck to all! GAMESPEAK – FEDERATED HOCKEY LEAGUE NEWSLETTER FHL Draft Order 2011/2012 Season – Round 1 1. Detroit is looking to beef up their offense next season. There is no specific need for positions but they are looking at the draft or an off-season trade to make these improvements. The highlights of the Bandits season included their great run for the playoffs in the last two weeks of the season. This is what they want to see for next year. Also, the Bandits look for Johan Franzen to be in full health for next season as well. Jimmy Howard, rookie goaltender, was inconsistent through the season but posted great numbers when he was on his game. Detroit looks for Howard to play better hockey next season. The FHL should look for Detroit to be a powerful force next season! With an upcoming vote for FHL coach of the year (Manager’s Award) please email me your vote by July 5, 2011. It doesn’t seem like that long since the FHL Inaugural Season ended 20102011 with the final game May 16, 2011. Now we are at the end of June 2011 and almost ready to start drafting for the upcoming FHL 2011-2012 Season. I know everyone is ready to try and improve their teams one way or another. A few of you will build only through the draft. A few of you will wheel and deal in trades. The vast majority will be in the middle doing a little of both, trying to find that special combination of players that can survive the grueling grind of an 82 game season and then the sprint of the post season. My only recommendation is proceed with caution. Yes, I realize the early bird gets the worm and there have been some mutually beneficial trades done already. But you have to balance that against the unknown of how DKS will rate the players. It is a trade off really. What is your risk and reward tolerance? If you feel you have a good handle on this, by all means proceed. The Automatic Individual Player Award Winners in FHL 2010-2011 Season are: Individual Team MVPs Each team is encouraged to select the one player whom they think is the MVP on their team. This is the single defining player, the one whom the team would not work without him there. He may be your top scoring sniper, or the defenseman who draws the coverage on the other team’s biggest threat. He could be the forward that is called upon to sacrifice his chance to score to cover the other team’s most dangerous player.
