Welcoming Word
Welcoming Word March 2014 Monthly Newsletter Issue of The Barrington United Methodist Church With the imposition of ashes on our foreheads on Ash Wednesday, March 5 th, we are going to enter into the season of Lent, which patterned on the forty days our Lord spent in the wilderness prior to starting his public ministry. Lent is the most holy and important time of the year to nurture our spiritual life. The church observes Lent as a time of solemnity, fasting, almsgiving, prayer, and study. Through those practices Lent offers a blessed opportunity to discover the mystery of Christ within us. This season of Lent calls us to grow deeper in our relationship to the Lord Jesus. Yet, we need to remember that it begins on “Ash Wednesday.” Ash Wednesday service is usually called “A Penitential Service.” I know that most of the modern Christians do not want to hear the words: sin, evil, repentance, or confession…. It, however, clearly reminds us that the growth of our relationship with Christ and nurturing our true life are only possible when they begin with sincere repentance. Without repentance, the ashes that we will receive coming Wednesday are no more than a mere ritual display. Without sincere repentance for the next forty days, we cannot hope to participate in the real joy of the Easter, which comes from the Risen Lord, having born our punishment, destroying the death, and triumphing from the tomb. With this in mind, I humbly but eagerly ask you to practice your Lenten disciplines. Our devotional exercise will put us in the right spiritual atmosphere for this season of Lent, drawing us to deeper relationship with the Lord Jesus and closer to one another. You may witness the power of God’s love and grace beyond your expectations. May God bless your sincere repentance and Lenten observances! In Prayers, Moo Pastor: Rev. If you would like to help prepare food or go on an MLF run, please contact Faythe Herdrich or Allen Scott. Barrington UMC provides runs every fourth Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday of the month and all ages are welcome to participate. As part of our outreach work, we have ongoing collections to support local and global missions. We collect Box Tops for Education that help support our local elementary schools, pull tabs from aluminum beverage cans help Hasbro Children’s Hospital and food donations for TAP-IN. Through these simple actions we share God’s love and care for our brothers and sisters. Please contribute to these different collections as you are able. Music Ministry: New members are always welcome to join the choir. Rehearsals are every Thursday at 7:15 PM. If you would like to provide Special Music during the worship service, please speak with Sue Eddins, Worship Chair. Women’s Spirituality Group: The Women’s Spirituality Group will meet on Tuesday, March 4th at 7:00 p.m. in the Betty Hamilton Parlor. Barbara Scott will lead us in a Great Courses’ program and discussion on “The Spiritual Brain.” Please join us that evening and experience how we are wired for spirituality. Thank You for Your Support & A request From Missions and Outreach: One of the blessings of the small church is that we have the opportunity to know each other better, to share each other’s burdens, and support one another in many ways. One of the roles of Missions and Outreach is to coordinate BUMC's fundraising ministries so that they are scheduled on a timely basis and don’t contribute to the feeling that “we are always asking for money.” With that goal in mind, we ask that you contact Faythe Herdrich, Faytheh5@Yahoo.com, in advance if you would like to raise funds for your favorite charity or non-profit or to request a special collection. It has been suggested by the Church Council that those wishing to raise money during fellowship hour request that a table to be set up in the Hall where it will be visible but not create a back-up at the entrance. Thank you for all you do to support our many ministries. Faythe Herdrich, M&O Chair Malaria Net Change Collection: The Sunday School kids will be collecting change for malaria nets during the season of Lent. Please bring your coins/bills on Sunday mornings, as they will be standing outside the sanctuary doors with boxes. Lego Request: We have a donation bin in Fellowship Hall for legos (regular size), which we hope to use at one of our upcoming family gatherings. If you have Legos in your basement or attic that are no longer being used, we’d love to have them here at BUMC! Sunday, March 30th: For more than 50 years, United Methodist congregations have been taking part in a special One Great Hour of Sharing offering, laying the foundation for UMCOR’s (United Methodist Committee on Relief) ministry of relief and hope. Donations UMCOR receives through this offering, along with other undesignated gifts made throughout the year, cover the costs of doing business. They make it possible for UMCOR to use 100% of all other contributions on the projects our donors specify, instead of on administrative or fundraising costs. UMCOR doesn’t receive United Methodist World Service or apportionment funds, so without these offerings, UMCOR would not exist. There will be a special offering envelope in your bulletin on March 30th. Please consider giving to this UM outreach! We are asking members to also bring individually wrapped baked goods so that after the service we can continue the spirit of sharing with our homebound parishioners. Thank you! March 4 at 6:30 PM BRING A FRIEND! First United Methodist Church of Warren/Bristol 25 Church St., Warren Shrove Tuesday is the day before the season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday. It’s the day on which folks in olden times tried to use up all the sugar and flour and “luxury” foods which used to be on the forbidden list during Lent because Lent was a time of fasting and self-denial. It was also the conclusion of Carnival or Mardi Gras, the great festival and time of partying when people ate as much meat and got all sorts of festivities out of their systems before going to confession to be “shriven” of their sins on Shrove Tuesday so that they’d be ready to go through the serious and somber 6 weeks of Lent. Come and share pancakes and sausage – and dress up in your favorite party clothes and Mardi Gras masks and beads! Call the church office if you need a ride to attend. Service March 5 at 7 PM Barrington United Methodist Church 230 Washington Road Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the 6 weeks of Lent, a time of personal introspection in which we contemplate our lives and how they do or don’t match up to all that God calls us to as Christians and human beings. Call the church office if you need a ride to attend. Taize Service: Pronounced 'teh-zay" March 16th during Worship The Taizé Community was founded by Frère Roger in 1940. He pondered what it really meant to live a life according to the Scriptures and began a quest for a different expression of the Christian life. A year after this decision Roger reflected, “‘The defeat of France awoke powerful sympathy. If a house could be found there, of the kind I had dreamed of, it would offer a possible way of assisting some of those most discouraged, those deprived of a livelihood; and it could become a place of silence and work.’” Because his Swiss homeland was neutral and thus less affected by the war, he felt as if France would be ideal for his vision. For Roger, France was a “land of poverty, a land of wartime suffering, but a land of inner freedom.” He eventually settled in Taizé, which was a small desolate village just north of Cluny, the birthplace of western monasticism.[1] Ever since then it has become and interfaith magnet of pilgrimage by many thousands of young people from all over the world. The worship service of Taize is a quiet simple way of meditation and prayer that includes simple chants, rich silence, abundant candles, and time for quiet and shared prayers of the heart. Short songs, repeated again and again, give it a meditative character. Using just a few words they express a basic reality of faith, quickly grasped by the mind. As the words are sung over many times, this reality gradually penetrates the whole being. Meditative singing thus becomes a way of listening to God. It allows everyone to take part in a time of prayer together and to remain together in attentive waiting on God, without having to fix the length of time too exactly. Come to experience a beautiful and different sort of worship that deeply touches the heart and soul. RISEM District Stewardship Workshop!
