Special Dietary Considerations,
Medical Information and 20142015 Calendar
We hope you are having a great summer. Time is flying by, and we are busy preparing for your return to campus.
2014 looks like another great year for the Famous Maroon Band! With the stadium expansion, a second giant video
board, and high expectations for the football season, there is a lot of excitement on campus as we head into Bulldog
Football 2014!
2014 Halftime Shows
We will open the season with music from members of the Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame. Artists represented in
the show will include B.B. King, Marty Stuart, Faith Hill, Jimmy Buffett, and, of course, Elvis Presley. For our midseason show, we will perform soundtracks from fantasy films including Chronicles of Narnia, Lord of the Rings, and
How to Train Your Dragon. November will include our patriotic show and our homecoming show featuring our
Famous Maroon Alumni Band.
2014 Special Events
Information for our Marching Honor Band will go out soon, so please make certain you encourage your friends to
apply. This year, it will be on September 6th (vs. UAB), and kickoff is set for 1:00. Parent Day was a huge success
last year, and we hope to exceed 700 family members for the UT Martin game this year. Make sure your family
members mark their calendars for November 8th as we host our 2014 Parent Day.
Band Camp
Band camp is very important to our success and attendance is required. It will be a busy week with lots of rehearsals
and some good food and fun thrown in as well. Please come expecting to meet lots of new faces and ready to work.
Make certain that you are fit and acclimated to the August climate in Mississippi so that camp will be positive and
productive.
Class Registration/Membership
Everyone should be registered for marching band (MU 2511). If you have not added the class at this time, you must
take care of this immediately so that we can make appropriate preparations for you prior to camp. If you have
received this newsletter, you are on our roster. Please let us know if your plans for enrollment have changed so that
we can make adjustments in our plans for the season.
This newsletter contains lots of important information about our procedures for band camp check-in as well as the
new procedure for dorm check in. Please read through everything very carefully. We will communicate with you
through your msstate email account as well, so please check that account frequently.
Enjoy the rest of your summer.
- Ms. Lance, Dr. Taylor, and Dr. Aarhus

IMPORTANT NOTES TO REMEMBER
UNIFORM CHECK OUT: Only one date remains for early uniform check out. The final early check out day will be on July 18th from 1:30 – 4:30 pm. Only
wind and percussion members can check out their uniform early (NO GUARD). Early check out of your uniform will GREATLY reduce your registration
time during band camp; however, you must still attend camp registration. You must be registered for Marching Band to check out your uniform early. All
other uniforms and additional items will be issued during band camp registration and throughout the camp week. Everyone must try on his/her uniform.
Uniforms will be altered as needed. We have secured the services of a seamstress to handle our alterations.
FEES: The band fee is $70.00. This amount will be added to your student account.
SHOES: You must have BLACK, smooth, matte finish band shoes and LONG BLACK, socks for performances (NO short or ankle length socks). A band
shoe supplier will be available to fit you on Wednesday, August 13th, during camp if you need shoes. Shoes will be $42.00 and must be paid to the shoe
supplier at the time of fitting. CASH OR MONEY ORDER ONLY! NO PERSONAL CHECKS or CREDIT/DEBIT CARDS!
ALL instruments (piccolos, too) must have a lyre and flip folder with 20+ pages. We will provide lyres for school owned mellophones, baritones, and tenor
saxes.
LOCKERS: We have lockers available for secure storage of instruments. All students using a university-owned instrument will be issued a locker assigned to
that particular instrument. Students using university-owned equipment are required to use the locker and are responsible for major/minor repairs and theft
when the instrument is in their care. Lockers for personal instruments will be issued to the membership by seniority. There is a $5.00 fee for any locker usage
including school-owned instruments. All equipment must be returned at the close of the season. If you wish to store your instrument in the band hall, you
must have a locker.
RESPONSIBILITY: Equipment and uniforms not returned will be charged to your student account and a hold will be placed on your records until the
equipment is returned or payment is received.

Tell Us Your Story...
Thoughts from FMB Members
“One of my most fun experiences with the Famous
Maroon Band was on the bus headed back to
Starkville from the Texas A&M game. About 5 of
my closest friends and I stayed up playing a card
game called Mao for most of the ten hour trip...still
awake when we finally arrived at the band hall
around 5AM. People called us crazy, and we slept
for a LONG time afterwards, but it was totally
worth it!
- Elijah Moore, Trumpet, Senior, Criminology
“My advice to the incoming Freshman would be to
talk to everybody! The first day of band camp can be
so scary, especially if you don’t know anyone. Get to
know the people who are standing around you in each
set. You never know who will become your lifelong
friend.”
- Regan Sanders, Horn, Sophomore, Interior Design
“Great events such as The Drill and Cowbell Yell excite us
for the first game, but nothing gets us band members more
pumped for football than our warm up concluding with
Battle Hymn Chorale! It sends a rush throughout the band
before every game and prepares us to march into Davis
Wade, ready to support our Bulldogs. I cannot wait for
Battle Hymn Chorale and the entire 2014 Famous Maroon
Band Season!
- Andrew Collins, Tenor Sax, Junior, Meteorology
“My experience with the FMB has been
wonderful! The memories and friends I have
made are irreplaceable!”
- Hannah Meeks, Trumpet, Junior, Secondary
Education
“Being a part of the Famous Maroon Band has been an
amazing experience for me! Not only do you make your
best friends here, but you meet people from all over, and
the staff is super friendly! It truly is amazing being a part
of such a great organization!”
- Tyler Glover, Trumpet, Junior, Music Education
>>FRIDAY, AUGUST 8TH, 2:00 – 5:00 pm<< **NEW PROCEDURE**
All band members (excluding Drumline and Student Leaders): The Housing Department has extended an opportunity for our band members to
check into their dorm 1 DAY EARLIER than the rest of the students living on campus. Report to the front desk of your dorm with your
MSU ID card to receive your key, paperwork, etc. If you choose not to take advantage of this early move in date, you will need to follow the
regular check in procedures on August 9th. This early move in opportunity should give our new members ample time on Saturday morning to
check in at the band hall before 11:00am for Pre-School Band Camp. Remember, we will begin our general meeting with all new band
members at 2:00pm on Saturday, August 9th.
MONDAY, AUGUST 4TH, 2:00 – 5:00 pm
Percussion report to the front desk of your assigned dorm to receive your key, paperwork, etc.
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 6TH, 2:00 – 5:00 pm
Squad Leaders, Drum Majors, and Social Committee report to the front desk of your dorm to receive your key, paperwork, etc.
During Pre-School Band Camp, those students who live on campus should not drive to the Band Hall. Leave
your vehicle parked in your residence parking zone and walk or bike to the Band Hall. Those students who live off
campus should car pool as much as possible and plan to park behind the MSU Student Health Center. Parking
in the gravel lot beside the band hall and across the street in the South Zone will be strictly prohibited.

favorite and most memorable moments of college are centered
around the FMB. Take the time and enjoy your experience. If you
