The Space Frontier Foundation’s annual conference is the most important commercial space conference in the nation.
This is the fourth year the conference has been in Silicon Valley and we are pleased to continue holding the world’s most
stimulating commercial space conference here. The NewSpace market is undergoing rapid expansion, similar to the
Internet explosion of the 1990’s, due to efficient business practices, a wide spectrum of technology, and almost prescient
investors.
Thursday, July 26, 2012 – Developing Products and Demands
Thursday is packed with an exciting line up of speakers and panelists. We will examine different models of
partnerships that lead to new services and products in the “Nurturing New Ideas” panel. We also highlight
the space activities that are being pursued right now in the “Not Your Traditional Commercial Crew and
Cargo” panel, as well as the efforts by individuals and private citizens to make space relevant to everyone in
the “Democratizing Space” panel. We also bring back the NASA Center Director panel by popular demand,
and don’t miss the SpaceX sponsored STEM panel featuring Bill Nye.
Friday, July 27, 2012 – Supply Lines to Space Profits
On Friday we will start of with exploring where opportunities abound for new space space business opportunities. We kick-off with a panel on “Space Investment: Building a Viable Industry” where we will discuss
the challenges and rewards of starting a new space business. The “NewSpace Business Plan Competition”
will build on this theme and the 10 finalists will present their business plans to a panel of experienced
judges and hope they walk away with the $100,000 first prize. For lunch we will be joined by Eric Anderson
discussing his latest venture planetary Resources and its quest to mine asteroids. We will close with the
“Space Alternative Architectures” panel focusing on near term opportunities to combine systems currently
under development in new and innovative ways to speed space development and commerce.
Saturday, July 28, 2012 – Settling Into Space
On Saturday, we look to the near future and the next generation of technologies and trends that will influence
commercial space and the expansion of humankind’s presence in the Solar System. Rick Tumlinson will kick
us off before looking at the next steps of human settlement with ”The Earthlight Institute Presents: Mars
Colony 2030”. Next we look at the future that is already unfolding with ”The Endgame of the Google Lunar
X Prize” which will explore what happens after someone wins the Prize? Join us for lunch with Ed Lu, a
former U.S. astronaut and Chairman and CEO of the B612 Foundation. NASA’s Chief Technologist opens
the afternoon, followed by more discussion on technology with ”Approaching the Tipping Point”. George
Whitesides, President and CEO of Virgin Galactic, will deliver our closing keynote. We finish the day with
the star-studded Opening the Space Frontier (On a Budget) panel, looking at what we can do with current
technology.

Letter from the Foundation
NewSpace 2012 Attendees,
When we were younger, we wanted to become astronauts and explore space
for the sake of exploring, but as we have gotten older, we have realized
that this desire is about more than just exploration; this is a necessity to
sustain our race. We need to move with a sense of urgency and make space
access and exploration a priority among our peers and our nation.
Now is the time to celebrate the achievements of those who have taken this
challenge and also encourage others to get in the race. This is also a time
to change the old bureaucratic mindset of space exploration and bring the
civil and commercial efforts together to further our cause. We are living in
an exciting time in the history of space access and exploration. These next
few months and years will have a significant impact on our future efforts.
NewSpace 2012 is our opportunity to come together with like minded
people, share ideas, and make our dreams a reality. Together students,
government employees, NewSpace start-up companies, leaders in the
field, and those who have a passion for space can truly make an impact.
NewSpace is a time to grow the industry by starting businesses, making
deals and creating jobs.

Finding the Balance
NASA and the FAA recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding outlining how the two
agencies will work together to ensure the safety of commercial human spaceflights. NASA’s
Commercial Crew Program aims to facilitate development of a U.S. commercial crew space
transportation capability with the goal of achieving safe, reliable, and cost-effective access to
and from low Earth orbit and the International Space Station. But not all human spaceflights
in the future will have NASA as a customer. How can we ensure that these missions will be
as safe as possible without the government imposing burdensome requirements on operators?

STEM: Developing an American Workforce

Sex, Drugs, and NewSpace
Space is sexy, but our unbridled enthusiasm for space development is like a drug. It has built
unrealistic expectations for what can be accomplished in the near term. On the other hand,
there are those in the arms control community who hype the idea that some form of arms race
in outer space is imminent and are also behaving as if on a drug. Following either community’s
claims in their entirety leaves us with nothing, and stands to bring the worst to Space.

and how the commercial sector and market forces will be the dispassionate arbiters of the
debate between those who want to develop space and the international arms control community

Back to THE Future – Making the Vision a Priority
As NewSpace firms begin flying, they must first cross through the airspace of public opinion,
where they and their goals are being re-defined in terms of the old paradigm of servicing the
government or to provide frivolous entertainment for the 1%. Thus the old school can dismiss
the idea of helping create a new industry that will open the frontier in favor of making sure
NASA gets a ride to the ISS, and regular people see no connection between what is happening
and themselves. We must stop playing around the edges as a movement and get to the heart
of the matter. It is time to stop fighting for scraps from someone elses agenda and change
the agenda completely. It is time to get back to the Vision of settling space as the central
and driving goal of human spaceflight, and to make it official thus creating a new blueprint
by which to make decisions in space and a new yardstick by which to measure progress. Mr.
Tumlinson will address this concept, and also explain his new EarthLight Institute project.

The EarthLight Institute Presents: Mars Colony 2030
The ultimate goal of space exploration is space settlement: sending humans to live permanently
beyond the cradle of Earth’s atmosphere. People often assume that permanent settlement is
many decades in the future. This need not be the case. There are many things we can do right
now that would dramatically accelerate the pace of space settlement. With the right policy
and technological choices attendees at NewSpace 2012 could well be among the first to live
permanently in free space, on the moon and even on Mars.

NASA’s Technology Roadmap
NASA’s Office of the Chief Technologist has created a series of Space Technology Roadmaps
that chart the way forward for numerous technologies related to spaceflight and NASA’s goals
over the next 30 years. NASA worked with the National Research Council and identified
fourteen technology areas, then assigned agency specialists to describe each areas top technical
challenges, the spaceflight missions they could impact or enable, and as a byproduct the
important terrestrial fields they could advance. NASA also has Technology Area Breakdown
Structures for all fourteen technology areas.

pop-culture in a way few NASA programs ever have by proving that Tatooine exists!

• Bob Citron - Pioneer of NewSpace - This award is for early leaders of the NewSpace
industry who have left a lasting legacy either through their own personal investment or
the creation of a NewSpace business. Bob Citron, who helped create SpaceHab Inc.,
Kistler Aerospace Corp., and Lunar Transportation Systems Inc. (among others), has
broken barriers between governmental and commercial space repeatedly throughout his
life. His efforts paved the way for today’s space entrepreneurs.
• TEDx - Best Presentation of Space - This award is for excellent ability in highlighting
past and present events in space exploration and development in non-fiction projects.
TEDx has become an exciting venue for discussing ”ideas worth spreading” about space
and exposing the general public to the latest space projects. TEDx has fostered such
thought-provoking presentations as Jeff Greason’s ”Rocket Scientist: Making Space Pay
and Having Fun Doing It” and the TEDxMidtownNYC events hosted by the SFF.
• Carol Pinchefsky - NewSpace Journalism - This award is for outstanding achievement in
journalism spotlighting NewSpace. A self-described geek, Pinchefsky is a freelance writer
who has frequently covered commercial space topics with insight and honesty. Her strong
support, and often defense, of NewSpace has been a theme in her Forbes.com articles, at
the SFF’s New York events and during her many years as Editor of SpaceFuture.com, a
site that advocates for space settlement and entrepreneurial space.
• Bruce Pittman - Service to the Frontier - This award is given to someone who has
dedicated exceptional volunteer service to the SFF. As a liaison between NASA and the
SFF, Pittman is a linchpin for our partnership with NASA and an indispensable source
of advice. We also commend his undying support of commercial space and efforts to
further it. His work inside and outside the SFF enriches us all.
• Dr. Simon “Pete” Worden - Spirit of Yuri’s Night - Presented by the Yuri’s Night organization, this award recognizes a person that embody the Yuri’s Night mission of using
space and art to contribute to the future of humanity, both in space and on Earth. Worden has supported many innovative ventures that sparked public interest and involvement
with space exploration, particularly the Yuri’s Night Bay Area events at NASA Ames.
His involvement helped bring to life some of the largest events in Yuri’s Night history
and catalyzed interest in Yuri’s Night across NASA and beyond.

The premise is that by contributing to a technological commons with clearly defined
property boundaries the incumbent product development risk is reduced. The synergistic effect of providing a clear articulation of the state-of-the-art, including what is
and is not public domain, provides new opportunities for the participants to create real
products using their unique insights that have a greater potential for direct and indirect
profit. The recursive benefit of each product successfully developed is some reduction

Yuri’s Night
Yuri’s Night is an annual celebration of humanity’s past and future in space, held each
April 12 in commemoration of the first flight of Yuri Gagarin (on 4/12/1961) and the

Tom Atchison – Board Chair, Director, Mavericks Civilian Space Foundation
Thomas M. Atchison is the founder and chairman of the Mavericks Civilian Space Foundation, a 501(c)3 California nonprofit he started in 2007 focused on enabling the personalization of access to space by the common man, through STEM education, research,
and competitive competitions. With over 25 years of experience as an entrepreneur and
technologist in Silicon Valley, he has successfully started four technology ventures, and
raised over $30 mm in angel, corporate, and venture capital commitments. Thomas
completed undergraduate education in chemical engineering, and a second degree in radiochemistry and nuclear physics, and completed graduate studies in engineering management. His current interests are in space vehicle development, commercialization and
civilian space exploration, STEM Education, synthetic and systems biology, and next
generation manufacturing technologies.
David Bernstein – Senior Vice President, Program Management, Space Systems/Loral
David Bernstein is Senior Vice President of Program Management at Space Systems/Loral (SS/L), a full-service provider of communications satellites and space systems. In this role, he is responsible for coordinating all engineering, manufacturing and
support disciplines required to deliver SS/Ls high-power commercial communications
satellites to SS/Ls customers. Prior to joining SS/L, Mr. Bernstein was at TRW, Space
& Defense (now Northrop Grumman AS). Mr. Bernstein earned his bachelor of science
degree and master of science degree in electrical engineering and computer science from
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Mark Bunger – Research Director, Lux Research Inc.
Mark Bunger is a Research Director at Lux Research, with 20 years of international business strategy experience as a management consultant, technology analyst, entrepreneur,
and innovator. In this time, he has advised more than 40 Fortune 500 corporations.
Mark joined Lux in 2005 and launched their Bioscience Intelligence Service. Prior to
this, Mark was a Principal Analyst at Forrester Research in automotive, aerospace,
and manufacturing and a Managing Director at European technology consultancy LB
International. Marks business education was in International Marketing at Malardalen
Polytechnic in Sweden, and Market Research at the University of Texas at Austin. His
ongoing technical education includes extension courses and lab work in neurology and
bioengineering at University of California (Berkeley) and San Francisco (UCSF). He
speaks English, Swedish, and German, and is conversant in several other languages.
Robert D. Cabana – Director, NASA Kennedy Space Center
Robert D. Cabana is the tenth director of NASA’s John F. Kennedy Space Center
in Florida where he manages a team of approximately 2,200 civil servants and about
13,000 contractor employees. Prior to his appointment to Kennedy in October 2008,
the former space shuttle astronaut served as the director of NASA’s Stennis Space
Center in Mississippi. Originally from Minneapolis, Minn., Cabana graduated from
the U. S. Naval Academy in 1971, with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics and
was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. Cabana was selected as an
astronaut candidate in June of 1985, completing his training in 1986. He has flown four
space shuttle missions serving as the pilot of Discovery on STS-41 in October 1990, the
pilot of Discovery on STS-53 in December 1992, the commander of Columbia on STS65 in July 1994, and the commander of Endeavour on STS-88, the first space station
assembly mission, in December 1998.
Carissa Christensen – Managing Partner, The Tauri Group
Carissa Bryce Christensen is a founder and Managing Partner of The Tauri Group, an
analytic consulting firm based in Alexandria, Virginia. For 25 years, Ms. Christensen
has been a recognized expert in commercial space, and has engaged the leading edge
of the space industry with innovative analysis of space systems, industry economics,
advanced technologies, unique regulatory requirements, and underlying demand. Ms.
Christensen holds a Master of Public Policy degree from Harvard University’s Kennedy
School of Government, where she specialized in science and technology policy. She also
completed a General Course in Government from the London School of Economics and
was a Douglass Scholar at Rutgers University.
Jesse Clark – Founder and President, San Diego Space Society
Jesse is the founder of San Diego Space Society and its current President. Jesse is a
graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and works as a computer systems
administrator. He has previously worked for NASA at the Johnson Space Center, Mission Control and for Honeywell on commercial aircraft avionics for programs such as
the Boeing 777 and the Bombardier Global Express. He is an avid space enthusiast and
space exploration advocate, is a member of The Mars Society San Diego and the National Space Society. He is a pilot, amateur stargazer, eco-advocate and enjoys science
fiction films and the great California outdoors.

Jim Crisafulli – Director, Office of Aerospace Development
A native of Los Angeles, Mr. Crisafulli pursued undergraduate studies in Physics and
Zoology at Harvey Mudd College and Pomona College in Claremont, California. Following a two-year assignment with the Peace Corps as a secondary school physics teacher
in Fiji, he returned to Claremont Graduate University to obtain a Masters Degree in International Studies. In his current capacity as Director of DBEDTs Office of Aerospace
Development (OAD) and Executive Director for the Pacific International Space Alliance (PISA), Jim serves as the States representative for Hawaiis aerospace industry,
and continues to work with various municipal, state, federal, and international agencies and institutions to promote innovative applications of advanced aerospace-related
technologies.
Mr. Davidson is the founder and Managing Partner of Near Earth LLC. Previously, he
was a Managing Director in the Telecomm Group at Credit Suisse First Boston. Mr.
Davidsons investment banking career began in 1987 as an associate and one of only
approximately 100 bankers at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette. He was part of the phenomenal growth and success of DLJ to over 1,000 bankers by the time of its acquisition
by CSFB in 2000. At DLJ, Hoyt Davidson was a co-founder of the firms Space Finance
Group, Wall Streets first dedicated industry coverage group for the satellite industry.
Mr. Davidson was one of two Managing Directors of the Space Finance Group. The
group raised over $25 billion for satellite related entities and held a number one market share for several years. Prior to investment banking, Hoyt Davidson was a Senior
Research Engineer in the Space Systems Division of Lockheed Missiles and Space Company before leaving to get his MBA at MITs Sloan School. Mr. Davidson also earned
his undergraduate degree in Physics from MIT.
Diane Dimeff – Executive Director, eSpace: The Center for Space Entrepreneurship
Diane Dimeff is the director of eSpace: The Center for Space Entrepreneurship. Prior
to joining eSpace, Diane was the associate dean at Carnegie Mellon University’s Silicon
Valley campus. She has over 30 years of experience in the field of education focusing on
developing and implementing new programs. Prior to joining Carnegie Mellon, Diane
served as the assistant dean and director of MBA programs at the Leeds School of
Business at CU Boulder and as executive director of the evening and weekend MBA
programs at UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business. Diane taught quantitative methods,
marketing, and strategy in business schools at both the undergraduate and graduate

Lynn Harper – Lead Integrative Studies, NASA Ames Space Portal
Lynn D. Harper is Lead of Integrative Studies for the NASA Ames Research Center
Space Portal, a consortium to promote commercial space development for public benefit.
Harper was awarded NASAs Outstanding Leadership Medal for her role as one of the
founders of the science of Astrobiology and her service as the first Lead for Astrobiology
Advanced Concepts and Technologies. For several years, she was the Acting Chief and
Deputy Chief of the Advanced Life Support Division at NASA Ames and oversaw the
development of air and water regeneration systems that are now leading candidates for
Space Station upgrades and bioregenerative life support projects. Her current focus
includes bringing the biotech revolution to space using commercial carriers to produce
life saving and wealth generating products.
Adam Harris – Vice President of Government Sales, Space Exploration Technologies
Mr. Harris is the Vice President of Government Sales and is responsible for implementing and overseeing SpaceX interactions with Federal agencies. In concert with the
SpaceX leadership team, Mr. Harris works to secure financial support for SpaceX business activities and programs. Prior to SpaceX, Mr. Harris most recently served as the
Staff Director of the House Select Intelligence Oversight Panel on the Appropriations
Committee. He also held the position of space budget analyst on the professional staff
of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee.
Benjamin Higginbotham – Founder, SpaceVidCast
Benjamin started his career as a national news director working in high-end television
and video production, and from 16 to 18 was the youngest director for two different
national television stations. His passion lay with the actual equipment: the $500,000
switchers and $250,000 cameras, so he moved into studio design and integration. As
the television industry started to move away from tape and onto hard drives, so did
Benjamin. From 1998-2005 Benjamin worked for an audio-video integrator designing
and deploying glass-to-glass digital production facilities. These facilities employed the
latest in networking and digital video technology, helping to rid stations of cumbersome
analog tape and distribution. In 2005 he decided to make a slight career shift and move
from video networking to data networking for WhereToLive.com and is currently their
Director of New Technology. During this time the team formed a new media outlet
called Technology Evangelist which rapidly grew in popularity, but took more money
and resources than the company was able to afford. After Technology Evangelist site
went on hiatus Benjamin took his gear and started Spacevidcast. This new and innovate
show features guests from around the world in a live and interactive web video format.

Jonathan Hofeller – Business Development Manager, Middle East & Asia, Space
Exploration Technologies
Mr. Hofeller is currently SpaceXs Business Development Manager with primary responsibility for the Middle East and Asia. In this role, Mr. Hofeller is responsible for the
development and expansion of SpaceXs international customer base across the companys family of launch vehicles. Mr. Hofeller also manages SpaceXs relationship with
Google Lunar XPRIZE, working with the Foundation to offer a reduced launch price
on Falcon 9 to qualified contestants. Mr. Hofeller received his Bachelor of Science in
Mechanical Engineering from the Johns Hopkins University, a Masters of Science from
USC in Mechanical Engineering, and a business degree in Technology Commercialization from USCs Marshall School of Business. Mr. Hofeller is also a graduate of the

Steve Jurvetson is a Managing Director of Draper Fisher Jurvetson, a leading venture
capital firm with affiliate offices around the world. He was the founding VC investor
in Hotmail (MSFT), Interwoven (IWOV), Kana (KANA), and NeoPhotonics (NPTN).
He also led the firm’s investments in other companies which were then acquired for $12

Tesla Motors (TSLA). Previously, Steve was an R&D Engineer at Hewlett-Packard,

Dr. Rebecca Spyke Keiser – Associate Deputy Administrator for Strategy & Policy,
NASA
Rebecca Spyke Keiser was named NASA’s associate deputy administrator for strategy
& policy in June 2012, an expansion of her duties and portfolio which began when
she was named as the NASA associate deputy administrator for policy integration in
August 2010. In this position, Keiser reports directly to Deputy Administrator Lori
Garver as the primary coordinator for agency-level policy and strategy efforts. She
helps implement a wide range of initiatives in support of NASA’s goals, and integrates
the efforts of the agency’s various strategic planning offices to ensure consistency with
the White House and legislative direction, while supervising an analytic staff in the
Office of Strategy Formulation.

English, and Education. Liz has produced Yuris Night NY, a space-themed party for
200+ guests, annually since 2008, and TEDxMidTownNY, as space-themed speaker series, in 2010-2011. Liz created the Space Frontier Foundations Business Plan Bootcamp
for the 5 finalists in the foundations 2011 Business Plan Competition, and was a judge

Jim Keravala – Chief Operating Officer, Shackleton Energy Company Inc
Jim has been a leader of international teams in the aerospace, finance, and technology
sectors for over 20 years. An expert in space systems and infrastructure, Jim combines a
deep knowledge of international business and technology trends with practical expertise
in building cross-cultural teams that cut across diverse sectors. After moving to Silicon
Valley, Jim raised venture capital for one of his companies and he is on the board of
space and software technology companies that he has cofounded. Jim is also a member
of Faculty at Singularity University for Technology Synthesis and Mapping, Chairman
of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics San Francisco Section, a
member of the Economics, and Investment Committee of the International Astronautical
Federation. In 2012 he was elected to the International Academy of Astronautics.
Amaresh Kollipara – Co-founder & Managing Partner, Earth2Orbit LLC
Amaresh Kollipara is a seasoned strategy consultant, financial advisor, and entrepreneur
with international expertise. He is a Founder and Managing Partner of Earth2Orbit,
LLC, which is a global provider of satellite launch services. Earth2Orbit is working
with the Indian Space Research Organization to provide commercial launch services
to a variety of satellite clients. Amaresh also co-produced the first and second annual
Space Venturing Forum, an entrepreneurial event hosted by the National Space Society.
Amaresh is fascinated by the science of space exploration. He believes that involvement
from the entrepreneurial sector, via emerging applications such as nanosatellite based
communication and microgravity based R&D, is an essential enabler for continued exploration. To this end, Amaresh serves as a strategic advisor to a generation of space
entrepreneurs by helping them develop breakthrough businesses. He serves as a Principal of the Space Angels Network. He enjoyed a successful career with the Strategy
group of Accenture, where he managed key strategy offerings and developed recommendations for Global 500 clients. He has been influential in pricing multi-million dollar

Bernard Kutter – Manager of Advanced Programs, United Launch Alliance
Bernard Kutter is the manager of Advanced Programs for United Launch Alliance
(ULA). In this role, Kutter is responsible for developing technologies and capabilities to
support ULAs long term strategic needs. In 2003, he initiated and led development of
Atlas evolution including in-space applications. Prior to this Kutter managed the Atlas
thermodynamics group, where he was involved 67 successful missions. Kutter received a
Bachelor of Science degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Washington.
He is a senior member of American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, a member
of AIAAs Space Transportation Technical Committee, the Space Frontier Foundation,
and the National Space Society, and has written on a range of issues related to space
transportation.
Eva-Jane is a Vice-President and Wealth Advisor with BMO Nesbitt Burns, one of
Canadas largest full-service investment firms. For over 20 years, she has provided expert advice on a wide variety of investment and wealth management issues. In 2003,
she revived her childhood passion for seeing humanity live and thrive beyond Earth.
Researching the state of the space industry, she began to consider how to contribute to
such a future by taking a more active role. She has presented papers at space conferences, starting with the Investment Financing of Exploration. She has been an invited
speaker, panellist and judge (Heinlein Business Plan Competition, 2009) to discuss topics including: financing for new space companies and markets; business accelerators;
business case issues facing space resources both Space-Based Solar Power as a future
energy source and in situ resource utilization and space mining; and for her insights as
a keen observer of the emerging new space industries.
Lon Levin – Co-founder, XM Satellite Radio
Lon Levin is an entrepreneur and executive with more than 20 years experience in the
space, new media, and telecommunications industries. Lon is President of SkySevenVentures, which works with and invests in new technologies, particularly space based
businesses. He is the co-founder of XM Satellite Radio and played an integral role in
the formation and development of other satellite, media, and wireless companies including Mobile Satellite Ventures, XM Canada, Motient Corporation, American Mobile
Satellite Corporation, and TerreStar Networks. Before his corporate career, Lon was
a partner in the law firm Gurman, Kurtis, Blask & Freedman, where he specialized in
space, satellite, media, and wireless matters. He started his career as an attorney at
the Federal Communications Commission.
Ed Lu – Chairman and CEO, B612 Foundation
Ed Lu is a 21st Century Renaissance Spaceman - a three-mission former NASA astronaut
and resident of the ISS, who also led the Advanced Projects Group at Google, developing
Google Earth, Google Maps, Street View, and Google PowerMeter. He is an inventor,
author, cosmologist, statistical physicist and astrophysicist with a PhD from Stanford.
Less than a month ago, he and his colleagues launched the B612 Foundation and its
Sentinel Mission, aiming to conduct the first privately funded deep space mission. Ed
will talk about the technical and business advancements and challenges of this new
frontier, where private organizations can now carry out grand and audacious space
missions.

Ramon (Ray) Lugo III – Director, NASA Glenn Research Center
Ramon (Ray) Lugo III serves as the Director at the National Aeronautics and Space
Administration’s John H. Glenn Research Center. He is responsible for planning, organizing and directing the activities required in accomplishing the missions assigned to the
Center. Glenn is engaged in research, technology and systems development programs in
space propulsion, space power, space communications, aeronautical propulsion and microgravity sciences. Prior to his positions at Glenn, Lugo served as the Deputy Program
Manager of the Launch Services Program at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center and was
principally responsible for managing, directing and evaluating the progress of all ongoing launch operations and activities including Expendable Launch Vehicles engineering
and analysis, payload integration, launch site support and launch campaigns.
Alexander MacDonald – Program Executive, NASA Emerging Commercial Space
Office
Alexander MacDonald leads NASA’s Emerging Commercial Space Office as a Program
Executive within NASA’s Office of the Chief Technologist. He serves at NASA through
an intergovernmental personnel agreement with Carnegie Mellon University, where he
is a research faculty member. His academic research has focused on the economics of
space development, beginning with his doctoral dissertation at the University of Oxford
on the long-run economic history of American space exploration. He is also a Senior
TED Fellow and a Clarendon Scholar.
Sean Mahoney – Chief Operating Officer, Masten Space Systems
Since joining Masten Space Systems at the end of 2010 as Director of Business Operations, Sean has overseen all the non engineering functions of the company and was
named the companys COO in July 2011. Sean brings to Masten his extensive business
experience building organizations in emerging technologies fields. From large established
corporations to the earliest of startups, Sean bridges the gap between technology and
business. After graduating from college, Sean joined AT&Ts Enterprise Hosting where
he proved himself as an innovative and effective manager, rapidly rising through the
corporate ranks. Upon graduating from Emory Universitys Goizueta Business School
in 2006, Sean committed himself to the challenges and opportunities of working with
emerging technology startups. Working with technology startups afforded Sean the
opportunity to work in a creative and flexible environment at the interstices between

technology companies, Sean serves in a leadership capacity for both entrepreneurship
and environmental non-profit organizations.
Philip McAlister – Director, NASA Commercial Spaceflight Development
Phil McAlister is a veteran of the space industry with over 20 years of experience
in civil, military, and commercial space programs. He is currently the Director of
Commercial Spaceflight Development at NASA. Prior to NASA, he was the Director of
Futron’s Space and Telecommunications Industry Analysis Division where he managed
a Division of approximately 20 people involved in space industry analysis and market
research. Before joining Futron, he served as a Senior Manager during a ten-year career
at TRW’s Aerospace and Information Systems Division (formerly BDM International).
Prior to that, he worked as a Technical Analyst for ANSER, Inc. Over his career, he
has participated in the design and development of new launch vehicles, the redesign
of the International Space Station, plus several commercial satellite endeavors. He
is an experienced program/project manager with extensive demonstrated successes in
business development. In addition, he is a recognized member of the aerospace industry
with 11 publications to his credit.

Ed McCullough – Principle Scientist, Boeing
Edward McCullough is a retired principal scientist from Boeing. He has received his
professional schooling mainly in nuclear engineering through the U.S. Navy (gaining

Engineering and Boeings Phantom Works. He has researched innovative methods to
reduce the development time of technologies and systems from 10 to 20 years down to
5 years. He has experienced successes in the area of chemistry and chemical engineering for extraterrestrial processing and photonics for vehicle management systems and
communications. He is an Emeritus member of the Board of Trustees for the University
Space Research Association, a member of the Science Council for Research Institute for
Advanced Computer Science, an Emeritus Chairman of the AIAA Space Colonization
Technical Committee and a charter member of the AIAA Space Exploration Program
Committee. He has worked several studies for the National Research Council.
Todd Meyerrose – Founder and General Partner, Talos Ventures
Over the last 15 years, Dr. Meyerrose has led a successful career in regenerative
medicine, completing graduate research in Craniofacial Biology and Development at
the University of Southern California and in Molecular Cell Biology at the Washington
University in St Louis. He has helped develop therapeutic interventions for genetic disorders, wound healing, and bone marrow transplantation. Following his post-doctoral
study at the Whitehead Institute in Boston, Dr. Meyerrose has launched several successful companies, aimed at accelerating the development of emerging technologies into
therapeutic intervention. Expanding this concept to drive even more resources to these
technologies, he formed Evil Genius consulting and Leverage Venture Capital Group
to provide venture funds, micro-loans, and executive mentoring services to early stage
high technology companies. Dr. Meyerrose is currently involved in technology sourcing
and commercialization from within the network of NASA scientists and engineers.
Mr. Miller is President of Space Policy Consulting, Inc., the President and CEO of Constellation Services International, Inc., a Member of the Board of Directors of the Space
Frontier Foundation, and led the Public-Private Partnerships section of the NSSO’s
Space-Based Solar Power study. Miller is currently under contract to the U.S. Air Force
Research Laboratory (AFRL) in the area of Operationally Responsive Space access and
is helping the AFRL be a smarter partner with the emerging space transportation industry. SPC supports a number of ongoing AFRL activities in the reusable launch vehicle
area. Mr. Miller is also the founding President and CEO of Constellation Services
International, Inc. (CSI), a NewSpace company that specializes in commercial on-orbit
space operations. CSI was founded in 1998 and is an entrepreneurial space services
company that focuses on commercial opportunities in Earth orbit. CSI is developing
and patenting a number of innovative solutions for orbital space markets, including LEO
ExpressSM Space Cargo System for delivering cargo to space stations that uses over 99%
existing technology, and the Lunar ExpressSM system that uses existing technology to
enable a near-term human trip around the Moon.

George Nield – Associate Administrator, Commercial Space Transportation, FAA
Dr. George C. Nield serves as the Associate Administrator for Commercial Space Transportation at the FAA. He has over 30 years of aerospace experience with the Air Force,
at NASA, and in private industry. Dr. Nield came to FAA from the Orbital Sciences
Corporation, where he served as Senior Scientist for the Advanced Programs Group.
His previous assignments include working as an Astronautical Engineer at the Space
and Missile Systems Organization, a Flight Test Engineer at the Air Force Flight Test
Center, and an Assistant Professor and Research Director at the USAF Academy. He
was the Manager of the Flight Integration Office for the Space Shuttle Program at the
NASA Johnson Space Center, and later worked on both the Shuttle/Mir Program and
the International Space Station Program. A graduate of the United States Air Force
Academy, he holds an M.S. and Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford
University, and an MBA from George Washington University.
Bill Nye – CEO, The Planetary Society
Bill Nye, scientist, engineer, comedian, author, and inventor, is a man with a mission:
to help foster a scientifically literate society, to help people everywhere understand
and appreciate the science that makes our world work. Making science entertaining
and accessible is something Bill has been doing most of his life. He is a graduate of
Cornell with a Bachelors of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He holds three
Honorary Doctorate degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Goucher College,
and Johns Hopkins. He has delivered commencement addresses at the University of
California Santa Barbara, RPI, Goucher, Hopkins, Harvey Mudd College, and Caltech.
Bill currently serves as the Executive Director of The Planetary Society, the worlds
large space interest organization.
Dr. Ellen Ochoa – Deputy Director, NASA Johnson Space Center
As a doctoral student at Stanford, and later as a researcher at Sandia National Laboratories and NASA Ames Research Center, Dr. Ochoa investigated optical systems for
performing information processing. She is a co-inventor on three patents for an optical
inspection system, an optical object recognition method, and a method for noise removal in images. As Chief of the Intelligent Systems Technology Branch at Ames, she
supervised 35 engineers and scientists in the research and development of computational
systems for aerospace missions. Selected by NASA in January 1990, Dr. Ochoa became
an astronaut in July 1991. Her technical assignments to date include flight software verification, crew representative for flight software and computer hardware development,
crew representative for robotics development, testing, and training, and Assistant for
Space Station to the Chief of the Astronaut Office, directing crew involvement in the
development and operation of the Station. A veteran of two space flights, Dr. Ochoa
has logged over 484 hours in space. She currently serves as a spacecraft communicator
(CAPCOM) in Mission Control.
Thomas Olson – Exodus Consulting Group
For nearly three decades, Mr. Olson has been a business systems engineer and analyst in
the Communications, Aerospace, and Publishing sectors. In addition, he has worked in
an investment analysis and operations capacity in the Financial Services area (cash and
fund management). A serial entrepreneur, he co-founded Exodus Group as a ”catalyst”
helping tech startups and Angel/VC/Institutional investors find each other. He was
on the original organizing committee for the Space Investment Summits, a semi-annual
event hat brought together interested investors and space entrepreneurs for knowledge
sharing and professional networking. Today he’s working with the DCArchAngels group,
who are reinventing Angel tech-sector investment, and plans to start a chapter in New
York.

Jeff Patton – Manager, NASA and Commercial Crew and Cargo Programs, United
Launch Alliance
Jeff Patton is the manager for NASA and Commercial Crew and Cargo Programs for
United Launch Alliance (ULA). In this role, Patton is responsible for advanced studies
and programs including on-going work to offer ULA launch vehicles for commercial
human spacelight and cargo delivery services. Patton developed the approach for ULA
launch vehicles to comply with human rating requirements and led the ULA technical
teams who have completed preliminary integration of a number of potential crew and
cargo transfer vehicles on ULA launch vehicles.
Carol Pinchefsky – Freelance Writer
A self-described geek, Pinchefsky is a freelance writer who has frequently covered commercial space topics with insight and honesty. Her strong support, and often defense, of
NewSpace has been a theme in her Forbes.com articles, at the SFF’s New York events
and during her many years as Editor of SpaceFuture.com, a site that advocates for space
settlement and entrepreneurial space.
Bruce Pittman – Flight Projects Director, NASA Ames Space Portal
Bruce Pittman is the founder and president of Profit Engineering Technologies and
is currently working as a contractor at NASA as the Director of Flight Projects and
Chief System Engineer in the NASA Space Portal and the Emerging Commercial Space
Office at NASA Ames Research Center. In this position Mr. Pittman supports programs
ranging from suborbital human-tended research; orbital applications of the International
Space Station and other orbiting commercial facilities; low cost, reliable access to space,
as well as cis-lunar commercialization. He has been involved in high technology project
development, project management and system engineering in a variety of industries for
over 30 years. Bruce has been a founder and member of the startup team in a number
of early growth companies including SpaceHab, Kistler Aerospace, New Focus, Product
Factory, Prometheus II Ltd. and Industrial Sound and Motion. Bruce is a Space
Frontier Foundation Advocate, Chairman of the AIAA Commercial Space Group, Cofounder and President of the Silicon Valley Space Club and a Director of the Space
Investment Summit Coalition and in 2011 NASA award him the Exceptional Public
Service Medal for exceptional leadership in pioneering the development of commercial
space for public benefit.
David Radzanowski – Chief of Staff, NASA
David Radzanowski serves as Chief of Staff for NASA Administrator Charles Bolden.
Prior to his position appointment in May 2010, he was the Deputy Associate Administrator for Program Integration for the Space Operations Mission Directorate, a position
he held since October 2008. Radzanowski recently supported the Review of U.S. Human Spaceflight Plans Committee, otherwise known as the Augustine Committee, which
conducted a comprehensive review of NASAs human space flight plans. He provided assistance and guidance primarily in the areas of budget and program cost. Radzanowski
received a bachelors degree in Astronomy-Physics from the University of Wisconsin at
Madison and a masters degree in Public Policy and Management from Carnegie Mellon
Universitys Heinz School of Public Policy.

Dr. James Reuther – Acting Director, Game Changing Technologies and Crosscutting Capability Demonstrations, NASA Office of the Chief Technologist
Dr. Reuther currently serves as the Acting Director for Game Changing Technologies
and Crosscutting Capability Demonstrations in the Office of Chief Technologist of the
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Headquarters. Previously,
Dr. Reuther served as the Lead of the Test and Verification (T&V) Office for the Orion
spacecraft development. After graduating from the University of California Davis with a
Bachelors, Masters, and Ph.D. in mechanical and aeronautical engineering, Dr. Reuther
performed foundational research in Aerodynamic Shape Optimization. Next, he served
as the computation aerothermal sub-team lead for the Columbia Accident Investigation
Board (CAIB) and NASAs Return to Flight (RTF) efforts under the Space Shuttle
Program. He earned the NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal and the NASA Silver
Snoopy Award for his leadership and technical achievements supporting the Space Shuttle CAIB and RTF activities. Dr. Reuther also served as a core team member on the
NASA Exploration Systems Architecture Study (ESAS) team commissioned by former
NASA Administrator, Michael Griffin. The 15 member ESAS core team led a multicenter team of hundreds of NASA engineers and scientists to develop the architectural
roadmap for NASAs future human space exploration systems. In recognition for his
contribution in ESAS, he earned the NASA Exceptional Service Medal. After working
on ESAS, Dr. Reuther became the Project Manager for the Orion, Thermal Protection System (TPS), Advanced Development Project (ADP), where he lead a team to
successfully deliver two integrated heat shield designs for the Crew Exploration Vehicle
(CEV) preliminary Design Review. For his exceptional management skill as the TPS
ADP Project Manager, he earned the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal.
Rex is founder and CEO of IZUP LLC, a NewSpace consultancy operating at the intersection of the space-technology, commercial space-development and investor communities. He is also an active Board member at Ecliptic Enterprises Corporation (home of
the RocketCamTM product family), a firm he co-founded in 2001 and led as CEO and
President through spring 2012. Rex is a space-mission engineer by education and experience and entrepreneur by nature. Before Ecliptic, he was Chief Mission Architect at
SpaceDev (1998-99) and BlastOff Corporation (2000), focused on defining commercial
lunar, Mars and near-Earth asteroid missions. In 1998 at Microcosm, Inc., he played
a catalytic role in the successful salvage of the commercial communications satellite
AsiaSat 3 via a novel lunar swingby trajectoryand still the only commercial spacecraft
to have ever traveled to the vicinity of the Moon.
Kent Rominger – Vice President and Manager, Liberty, ATK Aerospace
Kent Rominger is vice president of Strategy and Business Development for Space Launch
Division, ATK Aerospace Group. In this capacity he is responsible for generating new
business for the Space Launch Division with our NASA customer. Rominger has also
been named program manager for the commercial crew launch vehicle development
effort where he will work to grow ATKs commercial space pursuits. A veteran of five
space shuttle flights including two as the mission commander, he has logged over 1,600
hours and traveled almost 27 million miles in space. He culminated his NASA career as
the chief of the Astronaut Office. A native of Del Norte, Colorado, Rominger received
a bachelors degree in civil engineering from Colorado State University and a masters in
aeronautical engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. ATK has operations
in 22 states, Puerto Rico, and internationally, and revenues of approximately $4.8 billion.

Dr. Alex Saltman – Executive Director, Commercial Spaceflight Federation
Dr. Alexander Saltman serves as Executive Director of the Commercial Spaceflight
Federation. A native of Texas, Saltman has a wide range of experience in space policy,
government, and scientific research. He earned his bachelors degree in physics from
Harvard University and his doctorate degree in physics from Stanford University. Prior
to joining the Commercial Spaceflight Federation, Saltman most recently served as the
Legislative Director for Congressman Adam Schiff, who represents an area of Southern
California that includes NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and who, as a member of
the House Appropriations Committee, has been a leading figure in space policy and
NASA appropriations issues. In that capacity Saltman oversaw a staff of five and led
legislative efforts from conception to enactment, while advising the Congressman on
science, space, energy, environment, and nonproliferation issues, as well as on relevant
appropriations matters.
Gregory Schmidt – Deputy Director, NASA Lunar Science Institute
Greg Schmidt serves as Deputy Director and Director of International Partnerships of
the NASA Lunar Science Institute (NLSI), located in the NASA Research Park at Ames
Research Center. Prior to his current position, Schmidt served as Associate Director for
Strategic Planning in the Ames Research Center Science Directorate and co-founded the
NASA Ames Space Portal, an organization which promotes activities in Entrepreneurial
Space. Schmidt was one of the core team who developed the science of astrobiology in
the late 1990s. He led the team which developed the first Astrobiology Roadmap, and
served (along with David Morrison) as its co-editor. Schmidt is an Associate Fellow
with the American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics. He received the NASA
Outstanding Leadership Medal for his work in astrobiology and life sciences.
Dolly Singh – Manager, Space Exploration Technologies
Dolly Singh-Williams is currently Head of Talent Acquisition and Programs at SpaceX.
She joined SpaceX in Jan 2008 when the company was 250 people, and was tasked
with helping build the worlds premier technology company. Since that time SpaceX has
grown to 1800+ employees, has built an impressive army of exceptional engineers, and
has accomplished some of the most remarkable technical achievements of any private
enterprise in the history of the United States.
Prior to SpaceX, Mrs. Singh-Williams was Owner and President of a boutique staffing
firm supporting Fortune 500 aerospace and biotechnology firms for over 5 years. She
graduated from UCLA with a degree in Psychology and an emphasis in Labor Relations
and Education.
Mr. Sirangelo leads Sierra Nevada Corporation Space Systems, a producer of satellites,
space transportation vehicles, propulsion systems and space subsystems. SNC Space
Systems over its 25 years of business has been engaged on over 400 space missions
and has produced over 4,000 systems, subsystems and components for a wide variety
of earth orbit and planetary missions. SNC is also the owner and prime developer of
the Dream Chaser, a LEO orbital space vehicle transportation system currently being
funded in partnership with NASA. Mr. Sirangelo was formerly the Chairman & CEO of
SpaceDev, Inc., prior to its merging with SNC and has spent his earlier career leading
aeronautics, space and technology companies.

Coyote Smith – Colonel, USAF
Colonel M.V. “Coyote” Smith, PhD, is the Chief Future Scientist of the Air Force and
Director of the US Air Force Center for Strategy and Technology at Maxwell Air Force
base, AL, where he leads Project Blue Horizons for the Chief of Staff of the Air Force,
and Project Cyber Horizons for the Commander of 24th Air Force. He also serves
as a Professor of Strategic Space Studies at the School of Advanced Air and Space
Studies, and as an associate director of the Eisenhower Center for Space and Defense
Studies at the US Air Force Academy. Before completing his PhD at the University of
Reading in the UK, the Colonel served as the Chief of Dream Works, which was the
Future Concepts shop in the Pentagons National Security Space Office. In 2007 he led
the Department of Defense Space-Based Solar Power study for which he and his team
received the Space Pioneer Award for 2008 at the International Space Development
Conference in Washington, DC.
Amanda Stiles – Technical Operations Manager, Google Lunar X PRIZE
Amanda Stiles has wide-ranging experience in both the space industry and in web/online
community development. Amanda began her career in Mission Operations for the
Space Shuttle program, performing a variety of jobs including training astronauts
and scripting simulation scenarios related to Shuttle propulsion and guidance systems.
She has also worked on flight software for the NASA lunar spacecraft called LADEE,
based out of NASA’s Ames Research Center. Amanda holds a Bachelor of Science in
Aero/Astronautical Engineering from the University of Washington and a Master of
Science in Space Management from the International Space University. She has worked
at the X PRIZE Foundation for the past 3 years, contributing work to several prizes
including the Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander X Challenge and the Progressive Automotive X PRIZE. She is currently the Technical Operations Manager for the Google
Lunar X PRIZE.
Dennis Stone – Manager, Program Integration, Commercial Crew and Cargo Program, NASA
Dennis Stone is Assistant Manager for Commercial Space Development in NASAs Commercial Crew & Cargo Program at the Johnson Space Center. This Program manages
NASAs Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) initiative. During both
COTS competitions, he chaired the Business Committee. He also negotiated the Programs agreements with unfunded commercial space transportation partners. He leads
efforts to support this emerging industry as a whole. Prior to his COTS assignment,
Dennis spent 20 years in NASAs Space Station Program in a variety of positions, including Chief System Engineer of the Assured Crew Return Vehicle, Manager of Avionics Integration, and Co chair of the ISS Commercialization Working Group. Prior to NASA,
he worked for McDonnell Douglas, Ford Aerospace, and Rockwell. Throughout his
career, he has encouraged efforts to build the commercial space industry.

Named by Space News as one of the world’s top “Visionaries” and one of the hundred
most influential people in the space movement, Rick is a Texan and was a protege
of Gerard K. O’Neill at the Space Studies Institute, founder of the Space Frontier
Foundation (whose first $50 came from the Heinleins), a founding trustee of the X Prize
and a lead witness 6 times at House and Senate hearings on the future of NASA, the
U.S. space program and space tourism. Rick helped create or find funding for many
NewSpace firms and projects and ran the $25 million Foundation for the International
Non-governmental Development of Space (FINDS). He co-founded LunaCorp, which
produced the first commercial to be shot in space, signed up Dennis Tito as the first
commercial space flight participant and led the team which leased the Russian Mir space
station for a year (the world’s first commercial space facility.) He helped kick-start the
Lunar Prospector project which discovered water on the Moon, was a member of the
Air Force’s DC-X single stage rocket team, the X-33 and other projects.
Dr. Robert Twiggs – Professor, Morehead State University
Prof. Twiggs is currently a professor of Astronautical engineering at Morehead State
University in Kentucky. He joined Morehead State July 2009 to assist in the development of a Space Systems curriculum. Prior to that he was a consulting professor in the
Aeronatutics and Astronautics at Stanford University for 14 years. He is responsible for
developing the curriculum for students interested in designing, building and operating
small space experiments. He helped develop the original concepts for the CricketSat,
CanSat, CubeSat and the PocketQub for educational applications for use in space from
using party balloons for fun to real rocket launches into earth orbiting space. In 2010
he was selected as by the Space News publication as one of 10 space professionals “That
Made a Difference in Space”. The other two selected from the United States were Elon
Musk, CEO of SpaceX and the present US President, Barack Obama.
Henry Vanderbilt – Founder, Space Access Society
Henry Vanderbilt started his career in space as a star-struck kid watching Mercury
launches on TV. Twenty-four years later, an early computer conferencing system (BIX)
lured him into writing about space, shifting him from industrial electronics to space
politics at the L-5 Society’s HQ. He founded the Space Access Society in 1992 to focus
exclusively on promoting radically cheaper space transportation. After semi-retiring in

in New York, New Jersey, Maryland, North Carolina and Florida. Since 2001 he has
assumed a more passive role in Rivercrest Realty Investors and has been spending more
time working on a variety of projects including the Space Frontier Foundation. Bob is

Alan Weston – Director of Programs, NASA Ames Research Center
Dr Alan R Weston is the Director of Programs at NASA Ames Research Center, including SOFIA, Kepler, Worldwind, support to CEV, LCROSS, TPS, LADEE, Mission
Design Center and Small Spacecraft. Before working at NASA, Dr Weston was a technical advisor on small satellites at the Space Vehicles Directorate, Air Force Research
Laboratory (AFRL). In this role he provided scientific support to Air Force Space Command, the Department of Defense and the National Reconnaissance Office. He has made
nationally recognized contributions in space technology and has comprehensive experience in space systems, responsible for design, integration, test, launch & operations of
22 spacecraft.
George Whitesides – President and CEO, Virgin Galactic
George Whitesides is the CEO of Virgin Galactic, the US based and regulated Space
Tourism Company. Virgin Galactic has developed the WhiteKnightTwo and SpaceShipTwo air launched space system over the past six years using technology developed
by Scaled Composites based on the X Prize winning SpaceShipOne which was piloted
twice into space and now hangs in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. In his role
as CEO, Whitesides is responsible for all aspects of the business, guiding VG to commercial operations at Spaceport America in New Mexico. Most recently, Whitesides served
as Chief of Staff for NASA, where he was the recipient of the Distinguished Service
Medal, the highest honor that the agency confers. Prior to his role at NASA, Whitesides served as Executive Director of the National Space Society and Chairman of the
Reusable Launch Vehicle Working Group of the Federal Aviation Authority Commercial Space Transportation Advisory Committee. Whitesides earlier career experience in
the aerospace industry took place at Orbital Sciences Corporation, Blastoff Corporation
and the Zero Gravity Corporation. A licensed private pilot and certified parabolic flight
coach, Whitesides is a graduate of Cambridge and Princeton Universities and a former
Fulbright Scholar.
Alan Wilhite – Langley Distinguished Professor, Georgia Tech
Dr. Alan Wilhite is currently the Langley Distingished Professor at Georga Tech in
the School of Aerospace Engineering. He serves as the Co-Director of the Georga Tech
Center for Aerospace Systems Engineering (CASE). Dr. Wilhite currently works at the
National Institute of Aerospace in Hampton, VA, conducting research at the NASA
Langley Research Center. Dr. Wilhite is an AIAA Associate Fellow and serves as a
committee member of the Space Systems, Space Transporatation and Computer Aided
Design technical committees. He is a member of the International Astronautical Federation, serving on the Systems Engineering committee.
Lawrence H. Williams – Principal, Capture10
Mr. Lawrence H. Williams is a technology executive with a unique combination of international experience in technology, regulation, strategy, and business. Lawrence has
helped found numerous technology start-up ventures, successfully built organizations,
completed private equity financings, and worked with two of the worlds greatest innovators and entrepreneurs, Elon Musk and Craig McCaw. In 2012, Lawrence founded
Capture10, a business development and strategy firm that helps companies identify,
pursue and capture new billion dollar markets within the technology and aerospace
industry. The firm provides strategic guidance to clients on how to secure domestic
and international government contracts through direct sales, distribution agreements,

Dennis Wingo – Founder, Skycorp, Inc., CTO, Orbital Recovery Corporation
Dennis Wingo is a 34 year veteran of the computer, academic, and commercial spaceflight communities. Dennis began his career in the late mainframe/early microcomputer
era as a field engineer, test engineer and later a design engineer working on systems as
disparate as mainframe based printers to early local area networking for computers.
Dennis moved to the commercial space arena where his company Skycorp had the first
commercial space act agreement for the deployment of satellites from the International
Space Station (ISS) in 2000. Following that effort Dennis was a founder of Orbital
Recovery Corporation, the world’s first commercial on orbit servicing company. Dennis
and Skycorp continue today in these pioneering efforts, and Dennis’s book ”Moonrush”,
published by Apogee Books in 2004, described the economic and political basis for the
commercialization and industrialization of the Moon.
Dr. Simon P. Worden (Brig. Gen., USAF, ret.) – Director, NASA Ames Research
Center
Dr. Simon (Pete) Worden (Brig. Gen., USAF, ret.) is the center director at NASA Ames
Research Center where he leads a staff of nearly 2,500 civil servants and contractors and
oversees an annual budget of approx. $800 million providing the critical R&D support
that makes NASAs and the nations aeronautics and space missions possible. In just
three years, Worden has completely transformed Ames, reinvigorating the centers workforce and taking a leadership role in important, cost-effective small satellite missions.
Worden has also put Ames on the critical path for all major NASA space exploration
missions through effective use of the centers unique wind tunnels, arc jets, intelligent
systems and supercomputer facilities and capabilities. Wordens GreenSpace initiative
has brought Ames remote sensing capabilities to bear on air traffic safety, fighting forest
fires, and the study of climate change. And Ames new Sustainability Base facility will
serve as a model for future eco-friendly, high-performance federal buildings. In recognition of these outstanding achievements, Worden was named the Federal Laboratory
Consortiums Laboratory Director of the Year for 2009.
