OPEN ROAD FILMS Settlement reached over Spotlight scene The Associated Press BOSTON — The distributor of the Oscar-winning film Spotlight has acknowledged that filmmakers made up dialogue that made it appear as if a Boston College spokesman played down the extent of the sex abuse scandal involving Catholic priests. Jack Dunn, director of the news and public affairs office at the Jesuit university, said on Wednesday he became physically ill when he saw the film the day it opened in Boston. He retained a lawyer to demand that the scene be removed, although no lawsuit was ever filed. The movie about the Boston Globe’s investigation into the scandal won the Academy Award for best picture. Open Road Films, which said it couldn’t remove a scene from a movie already in theatres, announced the settlement this week. “As is the case with most movies based on historical events, Spotlight contains fictionalized dialogue that was attributed to Mr. Dunn for dramatic effect,” Open Road said. “We acknowledge that Mr. Dunn was not part of the archdiocesan coverup.” As part of the settlement, Open Road agreed to make donations in Dunn’s name to Boston-area charities, including the Big Brother Association of Boston and Resilient Kids. The four months since the movie was released had been “excruciatingly painful,” Dunn said. “I felt vindicated by the public announcement and relieved to have been able to put this experience behind me,” he said. The scene in question was based on an interview with reporters that occurred at Boston College High School in 2002 after the all-boys Catholic school was informed that three former teachers had abused students during the 1970s. creator of the cult classic science fiction TV puppet show Thunderbirds, has died at 88. Publicist Richard Leon said the writer and producer died Wednesday at her home in Bray, Berkshire, after a short illness. She created the series about a high-tech rescue squad operating from a secret island with her late former husband Gerry Anderson, who died in 2012. The show made its debut in 1965. Sylvia Anderson also voiced and provided inspiration for the uppercrust character Lady Penelope, who, like all the other characters in the series, was a marionette. Sylvia Anderson had a long career in television, including working for HBO in Britain. She is survived by her daughter Dee Anderson, son Gerry Anderson Jr, four grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. Photographer and Bieber settle suit LOS ANGELES — Justin Bieber has settled a lawsuit filed by a photographer who accused the singer of kicking and punching him outside a shopping centre. Photographer Jose Osmin Hernandez Duran sued Bieber in 2013, saying the incident left him with severe emotional distress. Duran’s lawyer, Steven Madison, said Wednesday, when a trial had been scheduled to start, the case had been resolved, but he couldn’t comment further. Bieber was accused of attacking Duran at a shopping centre in Calabasas, southern California, in 2012 while Bieber was out with singer Selena Gomez. Bieber’s lawyer declined to comment. — The Associated Press
