Tiger Happenings “Where everybody is somebody.” Louisiana Native Donates $100,000 Volume 1, Issue 4, November 5, 2014 A native of Plain Dealing, Louisiana knows the value of receiving a higher education, and because she does, Bernadene Coleman donated $100,000 to support Grambling State University in helping others achieve that milestone. Bernadene High Coleman "All of us should be willing to share and not be selfish about what we do, we need to pass it on,” Coleman said. The donation will greatly assist the university in its vision to continue to be a distinguished institution that produces accomplished top-tier graduates sought by global employers, particularly in the fields of science, engineering technology, mathematics, business, nursing, mass communication and teacher education. Although Coleman did not receive her degree from Grambling State University, she understands the role and relevance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities and the importance of giving back to ensure HBCUs continue to survive. Residential Life Goes Pink AFROTC Det 311 Dr. Cynthia Warrick, Ph.D., RPh Interim President President’s Corner Over that past few months my administration has been working to build relationships with various companies to increase internships and other practical learning opportunities for our students. Mr. Otto Meyers, executive dean, met with representatives from Shell, Exxon, Chevron, Centurylink and other participants to discuss scholarships and program development opportunities for the College of Business. We met with top executives at Centurylink and agreed to develop a plan to enhance recruitment activities at Grambling, to partner on various STEM initiatives at the K-12 levels in the area, various marketing initiatives and economic development. We are also looking forward to identifying opportunities for faculty enrichment, externships, sharing employment related links and other information from Centurylink with alumni. During an open house, celebrating the expansion of a production facility in Ruston, I had the pleasure of meeting the CEO of Xerium Technologies and company representatives. We are now working with the local facility to schedule tours for our engineering and chemistry faculty and students to learn about Xerium and structuring co-op/internship opportunities. I am very excited about the opportunities that these relationships will provide our students and look forward to developing many more. Our next meeting is scheduled with the Computer Science Corporation and we look forward to developing a partnership with them as well. Office of Career Development and Placement Showers Future Gramblinites Kamille Foreman teaches 4th Graders at Little Rock Preparatory Academy. At their school every class represents a college or university they would like to learn about during the year. This year, her class elected the great Grambling State University as their university of choice ( she thinks it was because Mrs. Dooley, wife of GSU's football coach Eric Dooley, taught 2nd Grade there last year.). All 26 students will participate in a project this year in which students will "virtually" attend GSU. They will work on what degree plans they would like to pursue, if they will live on or off campus, how much tuition will cost, what scholarships are available (academic, athletic, musical, etc.) and really try to get the feel of what the university "experience" will be like at GSU. To assist with their experience the Office of University Communications and Institutional Advancement sent GSU paraphernalia to decorate Foreman’s class so that they could represent with pride. Don’t Throw Away Your Business Threads The Career Closet is now open for donations in the Washington-Johnson complex, (College Ave.) room 104. If you have items and/or contributions please call one of the numbers listed on the flyer to make a delivery or arrange a pick-up. The purpose of the Career Closet is to assist in providing the appropriate attire for students on the campus of Grambling State University. We are specifically asking for donations of new, used and gently worn items for various job related occasions as: job interviews, receptions, banquets. Our response has been excellent and we do want to continue to assist those students to be appropriately attired for career making opportunities.
