Image files with the correct date/time will be easier to sort through if you're looking through a lot of photographs to find a specific one. When shooting bodies of water, use a polarizer filter to reduce glare. It will increase the contrast of the overall image, making colors seem deeper and more vivid. To shoot with a very slow shutter speed in bright light, use a neutral density or circular polarizing filter. The filters screw onto the lens of the camera or attach with a holder to the front of the lens. By letting less light reach the sensor, these dark filters will let you shoot at even slower shutter speeds than normal. Set your camera’s display (playback) to show you highlight problems. This is a simple feature that will cause blinking of areas that are overexposed on the rear LCD screen when reviewing the photos you’ve shot. If large or important areas are blinking, you will need to reduce the exposure, often by using the +/- Exposure Compensation and applying minus compensation. Get low for great action shots. It’s a great way improve your sports pictures immediately. Baseball games provide a lot of angles. Get low, near first base. From there you can see most of the infield action, plus home plate. Try shooting through the backstop with a long lens as the pitcher warms up. But don’t get too close to the action. You don't want to get hurt. Don’t delete images from the memory card unless you absolutely have to. It’s better to transfer everything to your computer and reformat the memory card in the camera afterwards. Use high-capacity memory cards so you don’t have to worry about running out of space when shooting. If you have a tripod and lights or stands, get your gear, your background and exposure figured out for the portrait before the subject gets there. That way when the subject arrives, you can pay attention to them. This will allow you to be more interactive with your subject and get them in the right pose instead of fiddling with the equipment. When photographing people, stay connected. This can be by talking to your subject throughout the shoot, guiding them with suggestions for better posing and providing feedback on how the images are coming out. The sky may be cloudy and gray, not blue but that doesn’t mean you can’t go out and shoot. Try using a color graduated neutral density filter to make the sky more interesting while leaving the foreground natural. Adjust the filter so its mid-point is on the horizon line in your shot. Be patient when photographing wild animals. Wait for the perfect moment to capture the emotion or action. Not sure which white balance setting to use? If your camera has live view, turn it on and scroll through the various white balance options while looking at the LCD. You’ll be able to see exactly how the scene looks with each white balance setting, making it easy to set an accurate or creative white balance for the scene you’re shooting. Check the direction of the light. Sometimes the best light on a person, monument or scene is not the most obvious. Moving around and seeing the light from all angles will expand your vision and make a unique picture. Make it a habit to do this whenever you have time. July 2015 Page 3 of 22 The workshop starts in Miami with an optional evening of shooting the architecture and neon lights of South Beach. From Miami, you’ll fly to Havana, where you’ll split into two even smaller groups of five to explore Habana Vieja (Old Havana) and other neighborhoods. Doug hires two superb Cuban photographers who serve as guides to help you get even closer to the Cuban people. Doug Kaye’s Cuba Workshops Cuba is changing rapidly. Are you ready to go before it’s too late? Doug Kaye, a member of the Marin Photo Club, is leading his 4th and 5th trips to this “forbidden” island country just 90 miles from Key West. Why go with Doug in particular? You’ll then travel by air-conditioned bus to the western tobacco-farming town of Viñales where you’ll spend two nights in a casa particular (private home, like a B&B). From there, you’ll bus to historic Trinidad on Cuba’s southern coast for another two nights in casas before returning to Havana for one night then return to Miami. For more info, head to http://DougKaye.com/workshops Doug’s Cuban partner handles all travel, lodging and meals, leaving Doug to focus on you and your photography. Very small group: 10 people maximum. Although most will be photographers, non-shooting partners love it, too! Two upcoming workshops: o November 5-14, 2015 o January 7-16, 2016 $4,495 double occupancy $350 single supplement add-on Includes most expenses that are extra on other workshops. July 2015 Page 8 of 22 10 Must-See Skywatching Events to Look Up for in 2015 Look to the skies in 2015 to see total eclipses, amazing planets and meteor showers. Here are some of the most noteworthy skywatching events coming up this year. Space.com will provide more extensive coverage of most of these events as they draw closer. Perseid meteor shower: Aug. 12 The Perseid meteor shower is usually considered to be among the best of the annual meteor displays thanks to its high rates. Lucky observers can sometimes see up to 90 meteors an hour during the shower. Last summer, the moon was a brilliant waning gibbous phase and presented a major nuisance for those who wanted a dark sky to watch the shower. But in 2015, the moon will be a couple of days before new and will not rise until just before daybreak, leaving much of the night dark for prospective observers. Last-quarter moon: Sept. 4 The last-quarter moon will pass in front of one of the brightest stars in the sky, Aldebaran, the angry orange eye of Taurus the Bull. This occultation will be visible over eastern North America, but there will be another visible over a much wider region of North America early on Nov. 26 — Thanksgiving morning. Another lunar eclipse: Sept. 27-28 Eclipse watchers across the central and eastern part of North America — roughly east of a line from Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Houston — will see the entire lunar eclipse from start to finish, while those farther to the west will see the moon rise with the eclipse already in progress. On the other side of the Atlantic, viewers in western and central Europe will see the entire eclipse before the moon sets on the morning of Sept. 28, although the moon will vanish below the western horizon from Eastern Europe and western Asia before its conclusion. Totality will last 72 minutes. Not only will the moon undergo a total eclipse on this night, but the moon will also very nearly coincide with perigee, its closest point to Earth. The moon turns full at 10:51 p.m. ET, and just 51 minutes earlier it will arrive at its closest point to Earth in 2015 at a distance of 221,753 miles (356,877 kilometers). [See amazing images from a 2014 lunar eclipse] A brilliant double planet … again: Oct. 26 For the second time in 2015, Venus and Jupiter will engage in a close conjunction, this time separated by just over 1 degree. Venus will pass to the southwest (lower right) of Jupiter and shine more than 10 times brighter than the huge gas giant. Taurid 'fireballs': October and November The Taurid meteors, sometimes called the "Halloween fireballs," show up each year between mid-October and mid-November. The shower should peak from Nov. 5 to Nov. 12 in 2015. Meteor expert David Asher has also discovered that Earth can periodically encounter swarms of larger particles, which can produce fireball meteors in certain years, and 2015 is predicted to be one of those years. Geminid meteor shower: Dec. 13-14 If there is one meteor display guaranteed to put on an entertaining show, it is the Geminids. Most meteor experts now put it at the top of the list, surpassing even the August Perseids in brilliance and reliability. The moon will be a narrow crescent and will set early in the evening, leaving the sky dark all through the rest of the night — perfect conditions for watching shooting stars. This will be your chance to see an average of as many as two meteor sightings every minute, or 120 per hour! July 2015 Page 9 of 22 N4C Board Meeting of June 8, 2015 President: President Jim Harais noted that the following items have been handled: Placing and marking of print portfolios coming into and going out from the N4C Board Meeting; Maximum size of a Mounted and/or Matted Print; clubs asked to put an N4C link on their websites. No additional feedback from Palo Alto. They will no longer be a member of N4C and have been removed from the list of member clubs on the N4C website. Jim spoke with Chinatown and they are still looking for a member to act as N4C Rep. Jim received 3 pages of notes from Gene Morita about Prints and he will forward it to the Board for review. Jim asked the Board, and particularly all reps, to recruit someone to replace Amory as Newsletter Editor. She will be stepping down after the July issue, but is willing to train the new person when a volunteered is identified. Jim has several possible replacements in mind for the Editor position, and he will follow-up. It was mentioned that having job descriptions would help with the recruiting efforts. Vice President: N4C is STILL looking for a VP! Club Reps should target recruit at the club level. Jim Cutler filled as VP by giving an update on reserving rooms at Rossmoor for the 2015 Annual N4C Judging. He will request January 30 or February 6th. Jim noted the deadline to get all prints in for the annual is the December Board meeting on 12/11. He also said he would lock in the Rossmoor Event Center and the caterer for the Annual Awards Banquet planned for Sunday, February 28th. Jim noted that plaques and medals are now handled by one vendor, Alpine. Treasurer: Teri filed the 2014 E-postcard with the IRS showing no taxable N4C profits. Teri and Jim still need to meet at the bank to update the N4C signature card. The Treasures Monthly Report, which showed a total of $20,834.22 in cash assets was reviewed and accepted. Secretary: No other report. Judges Chair: Not in attendance. Print Chairs: Entry Rules –wording update: Item #1-Projected Images and Prints submitted for competition must be free of any identifying information that would be seen during the competition. This includes copywrite information, watermarks, logos, maker's name, image title, or date. Entry Rules –Prints wording update: 1. Entries in all competition levels, shall be mounted on 2-ply or 4-ply mount board or foam core board. No entry, including mount, may exceed 16” X 20” or be less than 11” X 14” in overall size and may not exceed 5/16-inch in thickness. Prints that are mounted or matted must be securely assembled or they will be rejected. The review and discussion of Judge’s Survey Questions was tabled again. July 2015 Page 10 of 22 Print Co-chair Gene Morita was not in attendance. Co-chair, Joan Field, said she would be hosting the next N4C print judging. Gene Morita's notes on printing will be addressed in the next meeting. EI Coordinator: EI Coordinator, Gene Albright, noted 350 PI’s and 215 prints this month at the N4C level. Foto Fanfare Editor: Foto Fanfare Editor, Amory Donaldson was not present. (see note above regarding Amory stepping down from this role) PSA Rep: Not in attendance. Special Programs Chair: Joan Field noted that only 82 people had signed up for the Richard Martin seminar. A discussion about having one method and one master version of distribution lists occurred. It was noted that the Photoclub Services site has a list of all members that could be used to pull email addresses for various distribution lists and/or set up generic club addresses. Jim Harais will work with Gene Albright on this. Webmaster: Webmaster Teri noted that the website now shows 15 instead of 16 N4C member clubs (Palo Alto was removed). Old Business: Revising the N4C definition of Nature was again tabled. Rick Buddle said he would write up the suggested wording and distribute it so all could discuss at the next Board meeting. The subcommittee to revise the Honors process and form reported that they have made some progress, and will be emailing a draft version to go over at the next Board meeting. N4C’s bank signature card issue to be handled by Jim H. and Teri S. before next Board meeting. The review and discussion of Judge’s Survey Questions was tabled again to next Board meeting. Follow-up with Gene Albright on his discussion with Larry about revision of the Image Submittal process and Sequence image submittal process on the PhotoClub Services site. Follow-up with Gene Albright on the missing monthly and annual award certificates. Follow-up with Gene Albright on his progress training his back-up. New Business: The Villages camera club (a club participant of the now defunct 6C Council) would like to join N4C. Past President, Jim Cutler, will discuss this with them. A discussion and decision should be made as to whether or not N4C will plan another FotoClave event at the Concord Hilton and take advantage of the $1000.00 credit which must be used by December 2016. Job Descriptions in the N4C By-Laws should be reviewed, and if necessary, expanded upon in a separate documents, in order to give potential candidates a good idea of what is involved with each role. Especially needed now are VP and Newsletter Editor. Meeting adjourned at 8:59 PM. Minutes respectfully submitted by Secretary, Jane Postiglione.
