The PHS Royalty nominations occur through a vote by fellow students. The top three nominees from each class are up for vote by the student body. This

The Homecoming Court is a
representative group of students
that, consists of a King and Queen,
and
Princess(es).
Generally,
the King and Queen are seniors
while the Prince and Princess
are represented for each grade.
Recently, some high schools have
chosen to add a Duke and Duchess,
to extend the representation of all
students.
Classmates nominate students
who have contributed to their
school and then students vote for
members of the Court from the
nominees.
Once the Homecoming Court
candidates are announced, the
student body then votes for the
Queen and King. The voting is
often conducted by secret ballot.

The states of Illinois and
Missouri held their first “coming
home” or homecoming celebrations
around 1910.
Homecoming
celebrations
became
popular
on
high
school, college and university
campuses. All of them had similar
characteristics: the football game
served as a center point; the events
included rallies, parades, speeches
and dances; the events united
alumni and students creating a
sense of school pride; and they
were successful. By the 1920’s Homecoming had
taken root across the U.S. as an
American ‘tradition’.
In Prosser, the first Homecoming
was in 1951, with Ruth Valentine
Alley (Young) as the first
Homecoming queen that year.

will never forget,” said Skeen. This years Duke and Duchess
are very excited about the
appointment and look forward to
Friday’s game and Homecoming
celebration.
“I am going to wear a dress,”
says Daicy and Karter followed
with “We will be at the game
and dressed in red and white, I
got elected and they voted for
me. I am going to be at the game
Friday night.”
The enthusiasm of this royal
couple was contagious and there
wasn’t a frown around as they
spoke about their winning these
prestigious positions. “We will
be royalty, like a royal ball,” said
Karter.

Homecoming
origins
Homecoming is a long held
tradition in Prosser and at high
schools and colleges across
the country. Along with that is
the tradition of the PHS staff’s
nomination of the Duke and
Duchess as members of the
homecoming royalty court.
Two PHS students are voted on
by the staff at PHS as the ‘greatest
Mustang’s fans’ on campus.
During the past six years at PHS
the Duke and Duchess come
before the Homecoming Queen,
who honors and recognize them.
PHS spirit week is Oct. 21-26
with a major part of that week
being Daicy Rosas and Karter
Childers. “They represent the
best of spirit of Homecoming
at PHS. They give us high
fives, hugs and smiles,” says
Angela Skeen, advisor for PHS
Associated Student Body.
The PHS Homecoming Duke
and Duchess started in 2008. The
idea was borrowed from another
school in the valley area. They
had great success at recognizing
some of their dearest fans in the

“My Broadway” will be performed by the Rolling Hills Chorus of Sweet Adelines International Friday, Oct. 25, at the Princess Theatre in Prosser at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 26, at Hanford High School in Richland at
7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at Bookworm in Kennewick and Richland and Sixth Street Art & Gift Gallery in Prosser. General admission is $10 in advance, $12 at the door, seniors and students $8 in advance, $10 at the door.
Several chorus members live in Prosser and Grandview. The show features 100 years of Broadway music, including songs from “The Music Man,” “Hair,” “Wicked,” and “Mary Poppins.” Think of an old theatre … its last show
just ending … Mabel, the cleaning lady who has been there since it opened, has so many stories to tell. Come with Mabel and the Rolling Hills Chorus as they sing and dance their way through 100 years of Broadway musicals. Special guest Carisa Simpson and her accompanist Patti Robertson add glamour, Taylor Plunkett and local friends provide the acting magic, and the chorus provides the music. The chorus has taken first place in the annual
regional competition the last three years.

The Prosser United Methodist
Women’s ‘Country Fair Bazaar’
will be held Saturday, Nov. 2, from
9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the United
Methodist Church, 824 6th Street.
There will be homemade goodies,
hand-crafted items, jewelry, attic
treasures, guest vendors, lunch
and homemade pie. Lunch will be
served from 12-1:30 p.m. Lunch
menu: chicken asparagus quiche,
green beans, salad, apple pie and a
beverage for $10. Pie and beverage
will be $3. Lunch tickets can be
purchased by calling the church

from the bazaar will go to missions.
Harlem Ambassadors to visit
The
Harlem
Ambassadors
will be in Prosser on Nov. 3, at 5
p.m. The event will be held at the
Prosser High School. The money
raised will help the Chamber with
scholarships for our graduating

coming to
Prosser’s big
screen

Joe Blodgett, Biologist and
manager of the Yakama Indian
Nation and Bureau of Reclamation
Salmon Enhancement Project at
Prosser, introduced a new and
different world to the Prosser Rotary
Club on Oct. 17. Nick Cox, Club
Program Chair, arranged for the
members and guests to have a sack
lunch and a tour of the facility. A
similar facility focused on Spring
Chinook salmon is located near
Cle Elm. Joe has been with the
project since its inception in 1994. At that time the Coho (Silver)
salmon population was very low. Only 200-300 strays arrived in the
Yakima River each year. From that
beginning 8-10,000 come up the
river and the facility can take most
of the credit; some increase is due
to improved spawning conditions in
the watershed.
Joe spoke about various
programs at the facility including
Coho salmon, steelhead, sturgeon,
and more recently lampreys. Coho
move into the Columbia River in
late summer or early fall. Those
that come up the Yakima River
are not collected until the water
temperature cools down and the
fish are closer to spawning. The
fertilized eggs are incubated until
they hatch. The young fish are held
about one and one half years until
they smolt – when in the wild they
would come downstream migrants
ready to enter the ocean. Here some
are transported to tributary streams
where they become down migrants
and may return as adults to those
locations. They remain in the ocean
for two to five years before migrating
back to their birthplace. Because of
difficulties of spawning in the wild
only three or four percent of the eggs
are fertilized. In the hatchery the
success rate is over 90 percent. In
the hatchery one female may produce
thousands of offspring compared to a
small number in the wild.
The steelhead program is similar
but is different from the Coho
program in that Coho spawn and die;
steelhead (sea-going rainbow trout)
live after spawning and may go back
and forth to the ocean and return to
spawn several times in their lifetime. A cooperative program with the
University of Idaho is using tissue
samples for genetic studies which
allow identification of parental stock
and the tributaries of origin. This is
“new stuff” and these cooperators are

The sturgeon facility, began about
10 years ago was very popular with
the viewers. Several ponds contained
sturgeon which could be seen. Fish
in the ponds ranged from four to 23
years in age; the larger ones were six
to seven feet long.
The lamprey project was
started three years ago. Lampreys
are important in Indian Culture
and important to the ecosystem. Lamprey eggs are very small when
first laid. They rest on the bottom
of the river until they hatch and
the young lampreys (smaller than
a grain of wheat) burrow into the
mud where they may remain up to
seven years. Lampreys also migrate
downstream to the ocean, returning
later to spawn.
Joe commented on the recent
program to restore sockeye salmon
runs to areas shut off by dams and
a program focused on summer
Chinook salmon. The sunny fall day had a crispness
in the air, the fish were active and
everyone enjoyed the excellent
program.

The Street
Department maintains a regular
sweeping schedule to keep
our streets looking clean and
presentable. The Street Sweeping
schedule can be seen by visiting
our website at www.cityofprosser.
com under the Public Works,
Street Department.
However, the street sweeper
is not meant to handle the large
quantity of leaves that drop each
autumn. That is why the City of
Prosser Public Works crew will
be working on cleaning up leaves
around town. Due to the heavy
volume of leaves, they will be
using a back hoe in combination
with the street sweeper to clean
the leaves up. To ensure that the
street in your neighborhood gets
cleaned up fully, if you see the
City crew on your street, it would
be appreciated if you could move
your vehicles.
Here are a few helpful hints
to allow each of us to do our part
in managing leaf clean-up and
collection. 1) Please do not rake your
leaves into the streets. If you rake
your leaves, please bag them and
set them out by your garbage can
and Basin Disposal, Inc. will pick
them up free of charge. If you call
City Hall on Mondays, we will add
your address to the list for the free
Tuesday extra pick up. There is no
limit on the amount of bags you
can put out for collection. 2) Another option for the
homeowner to consider is
mulching and composting the
leaves. This reduces the volume
of leaves that would normally go
to a landfill. The compost is rich
in nutrients and would benefit
most gardens and landscaped
areas. This is the century of
“green”! Check with your local
extension agent or Benton County
Solid Waste for more information.

We received a lovely note this
week from a Kennewick couple. It’s
the kind of ‘thank you’ that makes
volunteers know that their efforts
are appreciated.
The wife wrote, “My hubby
and I live in Kennewick and just
discovered your facility. What a
treasure you have! What a refreshing
place to come and enjoy! Watching
a movie or play in your facility
has rekindled the joy of the theater
experience! A warm, safe, family
environment. Thank you for making
it possible!”
I know that many of you share
these same sentiments. We often
receive compliments on both the
facility and the varied plays, movies,
concerts and other events that take
place at the Princess Theatre.
It’s so easy to ‘take for granted’
this wonderful facility in our small
town…unless you are one of the
volunteers who donates time to help
with stage productions, concession
sales, event set-up and clean-up…
or one of our many generous donors
who understand that it takes money
to maintain this historic building and
to present a season of community

Dear Editor,
I want to take this chance to thank my school, for bringing Kelly,
professional author to Prosser Heights Elementary to tell us about how she
writes her books and that she writes for National Geographic Kids. The rest
of my grade and I thought she was a blast, and was very fun and interesting! I hope we get to see other things this entertaining again and I hope Kelly
can come back to show the rest of the school how amazing this experience
was. After I heard all what she told us and showed us, I went straight home
and got on the computer and went on her website to see what other amazing
things she has done!
Thank you again, it was a great opportunity to learn from and have fun.

Tell state officials how
transportation should move forward
Washington - The Washington
State Transportation Commission
is releasing a statewide survey this
week to find out what Washington
state residents’ priorities are for
future transportation investments
and how they think those
investments should be paid for.
The survey will be conducted
online through the commission’s
Voice of Washington State
(VOWS) survey program. The program is part of an
ongoing effort to bring the
views and preferences of
Washingtonians
directly
to
the Governor and the State
Legislature who face tough
decisions on how growing
transportation needs can be
addressed in an environment of
insufficient funding.
The VOWS survey program
currently has more than 30,000
residents participating from
across the state. The survey
will be available for about
two weeks, so time is limited
to sign up and share your

Renewing our commitment to our farmers
Agriculture is the backbone of
Central Washington and there is
no question that the successes and
challenges of our growers have a
significant impact on our entire
economy. As your representative
in Congress, I consider it my
responsibility to advocate for policies
that help, instead of hinder, their
ability to succeed.
This includes providing our
farmers with some certainty in
federal policies that help them to
plan ahead. Earlier this month, the
House of Representatives appointed
negotiators to resolve the differences
in a bipartisan manner between the
House and Senate-passed versions of
the Farm Bill, so that a final bill can
ultimately be signed into law.
As co-chairman of the House
Specialty Crop Caucus, I am
pleased that both the House and
Senate versions of the Farm Bill
include important investments in
research, pest management, and
trade assistance that provide our
farmers with the tools they need to
remain competitive in the global
marketplace. I am hopeful that
the House and Senate negotiators
recognize the value of programs like
the Market Access Program, Clean
Plant Network, and Specialty Crop
Research Initiative that provide real
benefits for Central Washington
growers.
One of the biggest concerns I’ve
heard from growers this year is the
unworkable, one-size-fits-all food
safety regulations proposed by the
Food and Drug Administration
(FDA). That is why I was pleased to
support an amendment to the Housepassed Farm Bill that would require
an economic analysis and further
scientific study on these regulations
before they can be implemented in
their current form. I will continue
to advocate for the inclusion of this
provision in the final version of this
legislation.
I am also pleased that the Housepassed bill included a provision that I
worked with Agriculture Committee
Chairman Lucas to write, which
would prevent regulations from
going into effect that would have a
severe impact on agriculture in the
Pacific Northwest. These proposed
regulations, which are not based on
the best available scientific data,
would eliminate the use of vital crop
protection tools on approximately
60 percent of the farmland in
Washington state.
At a time when our national debt
is at a record high, we have more of
a responsibility than ever to reduce
spending and use our taxpayer
dollars effectively. The Housepassed legislation includes some of
the most significant reforms to both
farm and nutrition policy in history.
In fact, the House acted to eliminate
or consolidate more than 100
programs, saving taxpayers nearly
$60 billion.
Central Washington’s farmers
need and deserve certainty so that
they can plan for the future. I am
hopeful that House and Senate
negotiators resolve their differences
quickly to develop a final bill
that meets the needs of Central
Washington growers, while making
the reforms necessary to eliminate
waste, fraud, abuse, and use taxpayer
dollars as efficiently as possible. I
remain committed to working with
my colleagues toward enacting a fiveyear Farm Bill as soon as possible.

The states and tribes are
halfway through implementing
a $1 billion habitat restoration
program on major tributaries to
the Columbia and Snake rivers that

rearing and spawning. That this
has all been accomplished in just
a few years can be attributed both
to the effectiveness of the plan and
the collaborative way in which it is
being implemented

remarkable success, vowing not
to stop until the Columbia and its
tributaries are free-flowing. They
blithely dismiss concerns about
flood control, river commerce,
irrigation and power generation.
For them, it is not a matter of
balance: It is winner-take-all.
Never mind the 7.8 million acres
of irrigated land in the Columbia
Basin that allows farmers to feed
the Northwest and the world.
The Northwest is the third largest
grain exporter in the world and
the number one wheat and barley
exporter in the USA. Much of that
grain is barged down the Snake and
Columbia rivers.
Never mind that more than $20
billion worth of cargo is shipped
annually down the Columbia and
Snake rivers and hydro operations
saved Portland from an estimated
$3.2 billion in additional flood
damage in 1996.
Never mind that Northwest
families and businesses have spent
more than $12 billion in higher
electric bills over the past 30 years
for fish and wildlife protection
and mitigation measures. In recent
years, fish and wildlife costs equal
about one-third of total Bonneville
Power Administration costs.
There are more fish in the
Columbia River today than at any
time since the first dam was built
at Bonneville in 1938. Many are
hatchery fish, but wild populations
are trending upward as well.
Lonesome Larry isn’t lonesome
anymore. It’s time to stop the
lawsuits and get on with fish
management.

Modernization Act Impacts

proposed rules for food safety by
the Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) will impact manure and
compost management.
Washington State University
Extension soil scientists will conduct
workshops covering composting
techniques, discuss the FDA’s new
Food Safety Modernization Act rules
and take participants on a tour of a
well-operated composting facility.
“Dairy producers will learn how to
better manage their compost so they
can meet the new FDA guidelines,”
said Andy Bary, WSU Soil Scientist
and workshop facilitator.

Watch out for deer on the roads this fall
WSDOT - If only it were this
easy…… Did you hear about the
folks who called the Department
of Transportation to request
removal of the “Deer Crossing”
sign on their road? They said that
too many deer were being hit by
cars and they no longer wanted
them to cross there.
Fall is deer collision time on
our roadways in Washington for
a number of reasons.
Some are about deer behavior
at this time of year. Deer generally
move to lower elevations in the
fall for easier foraging, and that’s
often near human development,
including roads. It’s also the rut
or breeding season for deer, when
bucks are less wary and all deer
are moving around more.

behavior at this time of year.
Shorter days and the shift to
daylight savings time put more
drivers out on the roads during
dimly lit hours when everything
is harder to see.
Whatever the reason, the
increased collision rate with
deer in the fall was long ago
documented by a Washington
Department
of
Fish
and
Wildlife
(WDFW)
analysis
of a Washington Department
of Transportation (WSDOT)
database on deer and elk carcass
removal on roadways across the
state. Between 2000 and 2004,
a total of 14,969 deer and 415
elk carcasses were collected and
recorded by date and specific
milepost on Washington’s 7,046
miles of highways that receive
31.6 billion miles of travel each
year.
The data confirmed some
intuitive notions: deer-vehicle
collisions are greatest where deer
populations are most dense and
where traffic is greatest. Because
of those factors and others, high
collision sites are clustered, not
random, and WSDOT posts deer
crossing signs accordingly.
The highest number of deer
collisions occur during the fall and
highest number of elk collisions
occur during the winter. The data
also confirmed: 1) The majority
of sites with unusually high deervehicle collisions were associated
with posted speed limits of
greater than 50 miles per hour.
2) Somewhat lower collision
counts were recorded on roads
with more curves and vice-versa
- straighter roads were associated
with higher collision counts.
3) Lower collision counts were
observed on eastern Washington
rural interstate highways, eastern
Washington
urban
principal
arterials, and western Washington
urban minor arterials -at least
compared to other roadway
classifications.
Comparing
the
WSDOT
data with established landscape
databases revealed a few more
patterns,
including:
Cover,
forage, and water available near
roads were generally associated
with higher collision counts
in eastern Washington mule
and white-tailed deer habitat.
Southern aspects, south-facing
roadside slopes, were generally
associated with higher collision
counts in western Washington
rural areas. Lower collision
counts were associated more with
steep roadside slopes, more than
35 degrees, than with moderate
slopes, less than 35 degrees.
So what can be done to avoid
crossing paths with deer in such a
traumatic way?
For the driver, slowing down
during fall and winter is the first
step, especially in the hours just
before, during, and after dusk
and dawn. Paying attention to
WSDOT’s deer crossing signs,
and particularly “high kill area”
signs, can be critical. Speed
limit reductions at night along
stretches of highway with a high
rate of collisions might be in
order. In general, new highway
development in high deer or elk
use areas should be avoided. Deer or elk could be protected
from collisions with construction
of fences along roadways with
high collision rates, especially
if combined with existing
bridges or development of over
or under passes to allow natural
movement. Such efforts have
proved effective in other parts of
the country.
WSDOT has wildlife crossing
projects underway, such as the
Snoqualmie Pass East section
of Interstate 90 which will have
three miles of the five-mile
project completed by the end of
this month. For more information

become road-kill. If you hit and
injure a deer or other wild animal,
or find an injured wild animal
on the roadside, you can call a
trained wildlife rehabilitator who
might be able to safely retrieve
the animal and care for it.

Monday afternoon the pool
room was the busy area with a few
games of shooting the ball this way
and that way. Monday evening
Kraig was busy with a wide array
of students making their practice
moves along with their leader.
Tuesday was a very, very busy
day at the Center. In the morning
Mary led the Happi Time Band
for one and all to enjoy the ‘oldies
but goodies.’ In the afternoon, the
Center was busy, busy…there was
pool playing in the pool room,
mahjong in the front office. The
Retired Public Employees Chapter
No. 34 members held their regular
meeting in the multi-purpose room. There was also a report on the
annual convention held in Yakima,
treasurer’s report for the Chapter
No. 34, by the treasurer Ida Mains.
Mayor Paul Warden presented an
update on the City. He explained
the growth and projects of the
City and an overview of the day
to day operation of Prosser. And
there were cookies and coffee for
everyone.
Wednesday morning Ray and
Ed called Fun Bingo. Jean won the
raffle prize – a Halloween basket
full of treats. Linda won the special
applesauce cake (baked by Jean). In
the evening it was time for the tai chi
ladies to do their special routines.
Thursday afternoon was time for
the gathering of the mahjong ladies
to enjoy their games. In the evening
the pinochle players were busy
shuffling, bidding and enjoying the
game, visiting and the snacks.
Friday we had a yummy rost
beef lunch, with all the trimmings. In the evening it was tai chi time.

On Thursday the Little White Chapel was moved from the Horse Heaven truck stop at Exit 80 to behind the Best Western in Prosser. The little
chapel (16’x13’) started as a special ministry with Larry Taylor as the minister and he has continued to do so for twenty years, starting in 1997. “The
chapel has a guest book that people sign or they leave prayer requests,” says Cheryl Taylor. Guests in the chapel have visited from as far away as
Germany and Australia. “There was one prayer request from a four years old boy who prayed that God would give us a bigger Church,” said Taylor.

Maases celebrate 50th anniversary
Stan and Anita (Huetson) Maas
will celebrate 50 years of marriage
Oct. 25, in a private get-together.
The couple was married Oct. 25,
1963, in Sunnyside. They remained
in Sunnyside for until 1969, when
they purchased a grape farm in
Grandview. They have lived in
Grandview since then, and have
farmed here for 44 years.
The couple has three sons
and daughters-in-law, Dean and

The PHS Booster Club,
represented by Anna Fazzari,
Athletic Director, asked the board’s
permission to hang a basketball
point board in the main gym to raise
monies for the Booster’s general
fund. Prosser Memorial Hospital
will give $1 for each point scored
by PHS varsity teams.
Brian Bell then introduced Boy
Scout Troupe 641, who attended
to work on their Citizenship Merit
Badge. The Scouts were to listen
and choose a topic discussed during
the board meeting.
Business
Manager,
Craig
Reynolds, was happy to report that
October student enrollment was up
62 students over what was budgeted
and hoped the trend continued.
Superintendent, Ray Tolcacher,
spoke to the board regarding the
trailer purchased by the school board
to haul supplies to Camp Wooten.
He also spoke about the need for
substitutes. Tolcacher informed the
board of the Job Fair which will be
held Thursday, Oct. 17 at 6 p.m. in
the multipurpose room at Keene
River View and invited them to
attend.
Action items were next on the
agenda. The board heard from
April Knight, Assistant Principal of
Heights Elementary, and approved
a $1,100 donation from the PTA to
Housel Middle School (HMS) for
the purchase of Apple TV’s and
apps to support learning.
Tolcacher
also
requested
the board approve two days of
consulting services for the district’s
principals to further their training
which the board approved after a
discussion based on funding.
Then the board voted down the
PTA’s donation of $750 for the
Tears of Joy Theatre to present the
puppet show, “Malika, Queen of
the Cats’ (a Palestinian fairy tale)
to Heights Elementary students.
Sally Juzeler, Principal of Heights
explained that Tears of Joy Theatre
was chosen because the schools
have used this Theatre Company in
the past and because of their great
reputation. “I assume someone on
the staff as reviewed excerpts of
it,” commented board member Win
Taylor. Juzeler explained, “I have
not. But Tears of Joy Theatre has
always presented an appropriate
play for this age and their plays
are generally geared to this student
level. They provide a question
and answer session afterwards
and always present a ‘positive
message’.”
Bruce
Matsumura
explained why he opposed,
“Personally, the Palestinian view
is not a pro-American view. I
appreciate the work that the staff
has done, but there is plenty of good
folklore of the U.S.” Gayle Wheeler
suggested that another play be
brought into the school. Taylor also
opposed the puppet show and said,
“Where was the vetting? You have
to vet the material and not just trust
in the company as to the message.”
The board, continued with their
agenda; approving the extension
of contract services for Jean Lane,
accepted a Grant for Literacy from
the Whitehead Foundation, they
accepted the service agreement
with Kelly Halls, the Hank Cramer
contract and the Prosser Basketball
donation to PHS.
School Safety and Security
Advisory Committee met on Oct. 3
and recommended the board approve
the use of pepper spray. The board
approved and Tolcacher was tasked
with changing the language of the
policy and procedures.
Lastly, Tolcacher announced the
timelines of hiring another board
member to fill the recent vacancy
of Jeremy Tuttle. After which the
Board adjourned into Executive
Session.
After the board returned to open
session, they reversed their decision
on the Tears of Joy Theatre and the
puppet show will be performed at
Heights Elementary.

Halloween activities
around Prosser
Prosser - As Halloween quickly approaches with crisp mornings,
falling leaves and cool nights, we want to offer some safe alternatives
for your children on Halloween night. The scheduled events are:
Downtown Trick-or-Treating at local businesses: 40 local businesses
will be open and ready for your children on the downtown streets from
3-5 p.m. Last year’s downtown trick or treating was a huge success and
business owners look forward to your participation again this year. As
you walk around town, please use street corners and allow the Prosser
High School Police Explorers to assist you and your children to cross
the streets safely.
Mustang Grill and roller skating will have $2 fun family Costume
and Skating Party from 5-7 p.m.
The Chamber will also be holding a ‘Trunk-or-Treat’ in the Depot
parking lot from 3-5 p.m.
Sun Terrace’s ‘Halloween Town’: Each year the residents and staff
at Sun Terrace welcome everyone for a special night of Trick-or-Treat.
This event has been very special to the residents and they all look
forward to seeing the children each year. The event will be from 6-8
pm. Sun Terrace is located at 2131 Wine Country Road.
Shy’s Pizza ‘Community Trick-or-Treat Night’: Shy’s Pizza has
been hosting a safe alternative from going door-to-door Halloween
night for many years. This year’s event will be from 5-7 p.m. Parents
are always welcome. Pizza and the regular menu will be available.
‘Community Family Fun Night’ at Housel Middle School: The
Prosser Community Church, Prosser School District, Covenant
Presbyterian Church, United Methodist Church and the Prosser Rotary
Club will be working in partnership to provide the community with a
safe and fun ‘Community Family Night’ at Housel Middle School. This
event has been in place for several years and is always well attended.
This year the event will be in both gyms which will be bigger than ever.
The event is from 6-9 p.m. Cost of admission for any family attending
the Family Fun Night is one bag of candy to share with all the children.
Just a reminder: If families choose to go to homes in town, for the
safety and welfare of our children, it is strongly suggested they be
accompanied by an adult and carry a flashlight when crossing streets.
Also, Prosser Memorial Hospital, as they do each year, will x-ray
any candy brought to the hospital. If you want the candy checked,
please bring it to the main entry in the hospital.
We hope everyone has a safe and happy Halloween and beware of
dark shadows!!

The theme for these years homecoming is similar to the film ‘Finding Nemo’, except PHS is having ‘Finding
Thunder’. Everyday will be a dress up day at PHS during Homecoming week. Monday was schools of fish,
with each class given a color and type of fish. Seniors: Black like Gill and Mr. Ray; Juniors: Pink like Pearl the
Jellyfish; Sophomores: Purple like Gurgle and Peach; Freshmen: Blue like Dori. The Senior class won the Monday
morning competition.
Howe appointed District No. 2
Prosser - At their regular school
board meeting of Oct.15, the
Prosser School District Board of
Directors took action to appoint
Andy Howe to Director District No.
2, which was vacated by Dr. Tim
Rankin, who moved to Iowa. Public
interviews of two candidates for the
open position were held prior to the
appointment.
Mr. Howe has lived and worked
in Prosser for close to 25 years. In
addition to his own three children
attending Prosser schools, his three
foster children have as well. Mr.
Howe has been involved as a PHS
Band Booster and has coached
Prosser Youth Baseball and Grid
Kids for over 10 years. According
to his letter of interest, he has also
served on the Board of Directors of
both youth organizations. Mr. Howe
will be sworn into the position at a
special board meeting on Oct. 23.

It seemed inevitable that the
Mustangs would find the end zone
for the game winning touchdown on
Friday night.
With the clock running down
in the fourth quarter, the Mustangs
would drive twice inside the West
Valley Ram’s 20-yard line. And
on both trips, the Mustangs were
only inches away from getting the
victory.
Prosser had their chances in the
fourth quarter, but could not get the
touchdown they needed as West
Valley escaped with a 13-7 victory
in West Valley.
“That’s what it was a couple
of inches,” Head coach Benji
Sonnichsen said of the fourth
quarter rally. “I’m kind of a lost for
words right now, because obviously
trying as hard as we can, we just fell
short here,” Sonnichsen said.
Late in the final quarter, the
Mustangs down 13-7 were just a
few inches from the much needed
touchdown. Mason Schutt hit
Cardell Jones in the corner of the
end zone, but was deemed out of
bounds. Same with JJ Martin, who
caught a pass just out-of bounds in
the back of the end- zone.
On 3-down-and 11, with 25
seconds left in the game, Schutt’s
pass intended for Jones but Brandon
Shields intercepted the pass to end
the hopes of the Mustangs.
“Offensively, we missed a couple
things here and we had our shots,”
Sonnichsen said of his offense.
For the first time all season,
the Mustangs were held to only a
touchdown and Sonnichsen gave
credit to the West Valley defense for
stifling Prosser and coming up with
the big play of the game.
“Great job by them. They played
physical and made big plays. That
punt return was the difference,”.
Sonnichsen said.
The big play of the game was
the punt return for the Rams was
mid-way through the fourth quarter.

As for the Mustangs, their usual
big plays were held to a minimum by
the West Valley defense as Prosser
only scored their lone touchdown on
their first drive of the game.
In his first action by from injury,
Isaiah Sanders scored on a four-yard
touchdown run to give Prosser a 7-0
lead.
“Getting a game under his belt
is good because taking a couple
of weeks off like that you get out
of shape a bit. He had a couple of
big plays, and its nice to see Isaiah
back,” Sonnichsen said.
After the Mustangs opening
touchdown, a defense battle ensued.
Prosser defense only gave up six
points on the night with West Valley
hitting two field goals, and the head
coach said his young defense played
well enough to get the victory.
“Our defense played well enough
to win that game,” Sonnichsen said.
Prosser held the Rams to only
field goals on the night with Brady
Bendall kicking field goals from
21-yards, and 28-yards.
With the loss Prosser (4-2), are
now in the thick for the final playoff spot with four teams with the
same record. All the Mustangs
need to do is focus on winning out
Sonnichsen said.
“We still can be one of the 16
teams that get into the playoffs.
That’s a huge accomplishment and
we just got to go back to work,”
Sonnichsen said.
Coming up on Friday its
homecoming night as the Mustangs
host the 4-2 East Valley Red devils.
Kick-off is set for 7 PM at Art Fiker
stadium.

Lady Mustangs rebound
with a rout of Wapato

That’s how the Lady Mustangs
responded on Tuesday afternoon
after two consecutive losses for the
first time this season.
Jamie Fassler scored two goals
to lead Prosser to a 6-0 victory over
Wapato at the Prosser soccer fields in
CWAC action.
As the Mustangs fell to
conference rivals West Valley and
Ephrata last week, Head Coach
Marcelino Rodriquez said the Lady
Mustangs went back to basics against
Wapato, “We came out and worked a
lot of passes. On Monday we talked
about what we needed to do. Move
without the ball, and make sure we
do triangles. And compared to how
we played Saturday, today was a big
difference,” the coach said.
Prosser started slow in the first
15 minutes, but once the Mustangs
found the tempo of the game, it was
all over for Wapato. From the 16th to
the 26th minute, the Lady Mustangs
put four goals into the back of the
net, and took complete control of the
game.
Prosser’s first goal was scored by
Fassler, set up by Jasmine Lemos.
Hanna Clark, Lemos, and Emma
Schutt added the goals for the
Mustangs in the first-half. “It took
us a little bit to get going. I told
the players if we are not doing what
we are supposed to do I’m going to
start subbing players out. After that
everybody kind of got the rhythm
going,” Rodriquez said of the slow
start.
In the second-half, the Mustangs
scored on their first two shots of the
half. Fassler latched onto a nice
pass from Rylee Suhdolnik past the
Wapato defenders, and the speed
freshmen put an unstoppable shot on
goal.
A minute later, Jennifer Inions
scored from a tough angel on the end
line, after the Wapato keeper let the
ball through her hands.
Playing without starting defenders
Luz Herrera and Denis Ruvacaba,
the Lady Mustangs didn’t skip a
beat. Prosser limited any offensive
attacks to Wapato who only managed
a few shots on goal. Rodriquez
praised Hailey Nunez, Haley Clark,
and Josie Courtney defense play.
“My defense did pretty good.
Pretty much my whole defense had
injuries. Hailey Nunez, Haley Clark,
and Josie Courtney all had pretty
good games back there,” Rodriquez
said.
With only three games left, the
Lady Mustangs are hoping for a home
match in the district tournament.
If the season ended today, Prosser
would host either Grandview or
East Valley in the first-round of the
district tournament.
“We are fighting for home field
advantage for the first the game
(districts), but anything can happen
now,” Rodriquez said.

Fire safety tips at Halloween

Halloween is fast approaching
and your firefighters at Prosser
Fire District 3 would like to
wish everyone a fun and safe
Halloween. We would also like to
share some important fire safety
tips with you and your children.
When choosing a costume,
stay away from billowing or long
trailing fabric. If your child is
wearing a mask, make sure eye
holes are large enough so they can
see out.
Dried flowers, cornstalks and
crepe paper are highly flammable.
Keep these and other decorations
well away from all open flames
and heat sources, including light
bulbs and heaters.
Provide
children
with
flashlights to carry for lighting
or glow sticks as part of their
costumes.
It is safest to use a flashlight or
battery–operated candle in a jacko-lantern. If you use a real candle,
use extreme caution. Make sure
children are watched at all times
when candles are lit. When
lighting candles inside a jack-olanterns, use long fireplace style
matches or utility lighters. Be sure
to place pumpkins well away from
anything that can burn and far
enough out of the way of trick-ortreaters, doorsteps, walkways and
yards.
Tell children to stay away
from open flames. Be sure they
know how to stop, drop and roll
if their clothing catches on fire.
Have them practice, stopping

of decorations, so nothing blocks

Walter Edwin Mason
April 29, 1924 – October 10, 2013
Walter Edwin Mason was born
April 29, 1924 in Prosser, Wash. to
Arthur and Hattie (Durant) Mason.
He passed away peacefully,
surrounded by his family on Oct.
10, at Providence Sacred Heart
Medical Center in Spokane.
Walt attended Prosser High
School and played the alto
saxophone in the band. After
graduating in 1942, he worked
briefly for the Army Corps of
Engineers when the Hanford
Project was getting under way. In
1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy,
serving in WWII and the Korean
War as a radioman, and played sax
in the Amphibious Force Pacific
Fleet Orchestra. Later he worked
for Dick Heald in the DodgePlymouth dealership in Prosser,
and then as manager of Valley Auto
Parts.
In 1950, he married Cora Louise
Nessly and they established their
home in Prosser. They had two
children, Carol and Charles. In
1967 he began employment at
the Prosser Irrigated Agriculture
Research and Extension Center,
retiring in 1989.
Dad played sax and clarinet in
various dance bands around the
Yakima Valley, and in the Lower
Valley Musical Comedy Company
productions. He was a ham radio
operator (W7ZZV), serving as
President of the Lower Valley
Radio Amateurs.
He enjoyed building furniture,
gardening and model railroading.
He tried to pass on his knowledge
and skills to his progeny with
limited success. In later years Walt
was a favorite at the morning coffee
get-together downtown, and had
many great friends in that group.
He was a member of the
American Legion and the American
Radio Relay League. He was very
active in Boy Scouts when his son
was in that organization. As Inez
Thompson’s right-hand man, he
volunteered at the Benton County
Historical Museum for many years.

Dad was a hard-working man of
many talents and interests, but most
of all, he cherished his family.
He is survived by his wife Cora
Mason and daughter Carol Marx of
Prosser, and son Charles (“Chuck”)
of Whidbey Island; grandchildren
David and Angela Marx of Prosser,
Jennifer Vacovsky of Atascadero,
California, Dan Marx of Spokane,
Randy Mason of Gig Harbor, and
Hattie and Pam Mason of Seattle.
Other survivors include his favorite
daughter-in-law, Trish Mason, and
his grandson-in-law Joe Vacovsky
and granddaughter-in-law Heidi
Mason; two great-grandchildren,
Charlie and Rylie Cora Joy Mason,
and Cora Rose Vacovsky, due
in December. Uncle Walt was
a favorite among his numerous
nieces and nephews on both his and
Cora’s side of the family.
He was preceded in death by his
sisters Jessie Taylor and Dorothy
Schreiber, and his parents.

Philip Randall Blakney
January 28, 1925 – October 19, 2013
Philip Randall Blakney, 88,
passed away at his home in Prosser,
Washington on Saturday, Oct. 19.
Phil was born Jan. 28, 1925
in Milton-Freewater, Oregon to
George and Fay Blakney. Following
his high school graduation, Phil
enlisted in the United States Navy
and served at a medical hospital
in the Admiralty Islands in the
South Pacific during World War II.
Through the G.I. Bill, he was able to
attend the University of Washington
where he received his degree in
pharmacy in 1951.
Phil married June Lehman on
June 11, 1949 in Seattle. They lived
in Heppner, Oregon for 10 years,
where they owned Phil’s Pharmacy.
In 1961, they moved their family
to Prosser where they owned Phil’s
Corner Drug for 23 years. Phil
continued to work as a pharmacist at
Costco until his retirement in 1990.
Phil was active in the Prosser
community as a member of the
Chamber of Commerce, Rotary
Club and City Council. He also
served as mayor pro tem for the city.
Phil’s interest in politics led to his
attendance of President Reagan’s
inauguration in 1985, a highlight for
Phil as a member of the Republican
Party.
Phil also enjoyed supporting
local youth athletics and was one of
the founders of the Prosser Piranhas
Swim Team. In honor of his
numerous civic contributions, Phil
received the Distinguished Service
Award from the Prosser Chamber of
Commerce.
The Blakneys attended Sacred
Heart Catholic Church in Prosser.
Phil was an active church member,
serving on the parish council and
parish finance committee. He was
also a Eucharistic Minister and
taught catechism. Phil especially
enjoyed leading and organizing
activities for the youth members of
the church.
During retirement, Phil and June
enjoyed traveling, camping, fishing,
and spending time with their ever
growing family. He was also proud to
volunteer at Prosser Public Schools
and the Prosser Hospital Gift Shop.

Following June’s passing, Phil
married Barbara Stewart in 2000
and continued to enjoy retirement
and time with family.
Phil is survived by his wife
Barbara; sons and daughters-inlaw: Phil Jr. and Kay of Wenatchee;
Steve and Cindy of Vancouver; John
and Carla of Prosser; and Myles and
Kelli of Selah; daughters and sonsin-law: Susan and Jim Purswell of
Hermiston; Sally and Arvid Smith
of Prosser; Joyce and Mike Carpine
of Spokane; and Julie and Owen
Schoenberger of Cranbrook, British
Columbia; four step-children: Tim
and his wife Birdie; Tom, Pat, and
Mike Stewart; 23 grandchildren and
19 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by
his wife June, his son Mark, his
granddaughter Leslie and his sonin-law Mike Flory.
A rosary will be held at Sacred
Heart Catholic Church in Prosser
on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 7:30 p.m.
Rite of Christian Burial will be held
at the same location on Thursday,
Oct. 24, at 11 a.m., followed by a
reception at the church.
Arrangements entrusted to the
care of Prosser Funeral Home.

Greg Rose has been appointed as personal
representative (“personal representative”) of this estate. Any
person having a claim against the decedent must, before the time
the claim would be barred by any otherwise applicable statute of
limitations, present the claim in the manner as provided in RCW
11.40.070 by serving on or mailing to the personal representative
or the personal representative’s attorney at the address stated
below a copy of the claim and filing the original of the claim with
the court in which the probate proceedings were commenced.
The claim must be presented within the later of: (1) 30 days
after the personal representative served or mailed the notice to
the Creditor as provided under RCW 11.40.020(1)(c); or (2)
four months after the date of first publication of the notice. If the
claim is not presented within this time frame, the claim is forever
barred, except as otherwise provided in RCW 11.40.051 and

decedent’s probate and nonprobate assets.

Anyone having any objections to this sale on any grounds whatso­ever
