Holland America Line’s Alaska 12 Days, July 19-30, 2017 From $4123* • Four night land tour to Fairbanks, Denali & Anchorage • Seven night cruise to Glacier Bay, Juneau, Haines, Ketchikan & Inside Passage • Dutch charm and gracious service aboard Holland America’s Noordam H EAD NORTH to Alaska with Diana Church and beat the heat next summer in the lower 48. On the edges of the frontier, you will gasp at the endless vistas of mountains, rivers and wildlife from waking to midnight sun. Alaska is a land shaped by epic geologic forces—one of the world’s last true wildernesses. Here you can still escape civilization and witness the grandeur of nature unfolding around you. Twisting, narrow fjords carved over eons serve as scenic highways for great ships—highways that eventually lead to magical destinations like Glacier Bay National Park where the glaciers tower over the sea and where you’ll hear the crack and crash of new icebergs as they calve off in blocks, some the size of buildings. In the waters below, whales gulp vast mouthfuls of tiny plankton before coming to the surface to exhale blasts of spray, or to catch a glimpse of the distant land. Scattered, remote outposts sit along the lushly forested coast. Itinerary Day 1 Wednesday: Central Illinois-St. Louis-FlightFairbanks We begin with transportation from Central Illinois to St. Louis for our flight to Fairbanks. Upon arrival we are taken to our hotel for an overnight stay. Bearing the nickname the Golden Heart, Alaska’s second-largest city was born of gold rush fever, thanks to Italian immigrant Felix Pedro who found the precious metal in 1902. The city’s location in Alaska’s interior makes it a gateway to the arctic, and in summer tourist boats run cruises along the Chena and Tanana rivers. Day 2 Thursday: FairbanksDenali National Park An included cruise aboard the sternwheeler Riverboat Discovery along the Chena and Tanana Rivers, offers a demonstration of a fish wheel and training for the Iditarod, as well as insight into Athabascan Fairbanks’ Riverboat Discovery The McKinley Chalet Indian culture. Enjoy lunch after the cruise and then we’re off to Denali for a two night stay. Take in the stunning scenery and watch for ptarmigan, Alaska’s state bird, in the open valleys and golden eagles patrolling the higher elevations and ridge tops. With luck, you’ll see grizzlies crossing braided streams, Dall sheep traversing rugged cliffs and moose foraging in upland meadows. The remainder of the day is free in Denali. Enjoy some fun this evening at the optional Music of Denali, a musical comedy. (L) Day 3 Friday: Denali National Park Today features the unforgettable Tundra Wilderness Tour. This 6-8 hour fully narrated sightseeing excursion is a deep drive into Denali National Park — the very best chance of seeing both the mountain itself and Denali’s iconic wildlife (snack included). We stop for photo opportunities of wildlife we come upon and enjoy a break at our turn-around point, closest to Mt. McKinley which rises to an astonishing 20,320 feet. Denali, as Mt. McKinley is known to the Alaskan people, is so massive it makes its own weather. Day 4 Saturday: DenaliDomed Rail Cars-Anchorage This morning, board the luxurious domed rail cars of the McKinley Explorer bound for Anchorage. These double-decker luxury railcars offer panoramic domed windows to let the views in. A guide will fascinate you with background on the passing scenery while bringing enthusiasm and flair to the Alaskan story. Need a snack or meal? The Dining Salon on the lower level offers Alaskan cuisine (not included). We travel past dense green forests and views of the Chugach Range before arriving in the vibrant city of Anchorage. Day 5 Sunday: AnchorageSeward Enjoy a scenic rail journey along Turnagain Arm aboard the “cruisetrain” en route to Seward before embarking your ship, ms Noordam. Dinner is included tonight as are all meals aboard the ship. We sail at 8:00 p.m. (D) Outdoor dining at McKinley Chalet McKinley Explorer domed rail cars Day 6 Monday: At Sea in the Gulf of Alaska Enjoy a leisurely day of cruising. Glaciers sculpted this stunning wilderness; in fact, their high-water marks remain visible. The massive sheets of ice smoothed and rounded any terrain under a mile high. Glaciers remain a huge draw in Alaska. Don’t forget to survey beaches for coastal brown bears, which can grow up to three times bigger than inland grizzlies, thanks to all the available salmon. Make sure to pack warm and waterproof gear, along with binoculars, so you can belly up to a railing and enjoy this magnificent beauty. (B, L, D) Get great views of the awe-inspiring scenery while riding in the domed rail cars Day 7 Tuesday: Glacier Bay, Alaska Cruise the ice-studded fjords of this national treasure for a full eight hours (from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.) as a Park Service Ranger narrates. Frosted crags descend into mossy forests and a 1500-foot-deep fjord at this World Heritage Site, which is also one of the planet’s largest biosphere reserves. Stone, ice and water continue to collide, sculpting a dramatic landscape that is the crown jewel of southeastern Alaska’s natural wonders. The area’s first European explorer missed it all—but with good reason. When Captain George Vancouver sailed here more than 200 years ago, ice extended into the sea. Now the glaciers have retreated 65 miles up to the bay, leaving the newest places on earth in their wake. Listen for the thunder and crackle as ice the size of buildings break off periodically and crash into the sea, the Tlingit Indians call this White Thunder, we know it as calving. You hold your breath as you catch the moment on film. Then you wait for it all to happen again. And it does: Glacier Bay has more actively calving tidewater glaciers than anyplace else in the world. Even in summer, be prepared for any weather – especially rain! (B, L, D) Day 8 Wednesday: Haines, Alaska There’s a reason Haines is known as the adventure capital of Alaska. Although many cities in Alaska feel different than those in “the lower 48,” Haines is more unusual than most with its unique rustic feel. It’s almost as if time has stopped. Chain stores and stop lights, haven’t infiltrated this town of 1,300 that once topped Outside magazine’s list of “20 Best Places to Live and Play.” In the late 1890s, the town emerged as a stop for prospectors headed to the Yukon for the Klondike Gold Rush. Decades later it became a logging town, before turning to tourism beginning in the 1970s. These days, Haines is known as a haven for artists and nature lovers and is visited by far fewer cruise ships than other Alaskan coastal cities. Or join an optional excursion to You can pan for gold! Juneau excursion boats guarantee you will see whales! Skagway where you can take a ride on the White Pass & Yukon Railroad. In Port 6:30 a.m.-9:00 p.m. (B, L, D) Day 9 Thursday: Juneau, Alaska The mighty Mendenhall Glacier crowns the capital city of Juneau which is surrounded by water, forest and mountain sights. Visitors seeking things to do in Juneau will find plenty of options indoors and outdoors. You can ride the tram up Mount Roberts to chance upon wild deer and bald eagles. Most whalewatching tours head north to Auke Bay—bring a good pair of binoculars to get the best view of these majestic and surprisingly graceful creatures. The sleepy, misty city of around 32,000—mostly fishermen and small-business owners—has a frontier town vibe, but welcomes more than a million visitors each summer to its natural attractions, cementing Juneau as Alaska’s number-one tourist destination. Docked 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. (B, L, D) Day 10 Friday: Ketchikan, Alaska Alaska’s “First City” of Ketchikan is so named because it’s the first major landfall for most cruisers as they enter the picturesque fjords of the Inside Passage, where the town clings to the banks of the Tongass Narrows, flanked by green forests nurtured by abundant rain. Ketchikan has Below: Juneau’s Mendenhall Glacier; above: our ship at Glacier Bay long been an important hub of the salmon-fishing/packing industries. Visitors can try their luck on a sportfishing excursion or simply savor fresh seafood at one of the local restaurants. It is also one of the best spots along the Inside Passage to explore the rich cultural sights of Native Alaskan nations like the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian. You can see intricately carved totem poles at the Totem Heritage Center and Totem Bight State Park, while the attractions of Saxman Village just outside of Ketchikan offers the chance to see Tlingit culture in action, with working carvers and a dance show in the clan house. And leave time to explore the sights in the town itself, including historic Creek Street, a boardwalk built over the Ketchikan Creek, where you can shop for souvenirs, smoked salmon and local art, while exploring gold rush– era tourist attractions like Dolly’s House Museum. In port 11:00 a.m.7:00 p.m. (B, L, D) REAT GREAT LANDLAND INING DINING PLANPLAN Your choice of fine dining, casual or specialty dining at flexible or fixed times Ketchikan’s Creek Street Day 11 Saturday: Inside Passage British Columbia and Alaska’s Inside Passage is a protected network of waterways that wind through glacier-cut fjords and lush temperate rain forests along the rugged coast of Southeast Alaska. Arguably one of the greatest cruising routes in the world, the Inside Passage stretches through stunning landscapes. This final day at sea is the perfect way to ease the transition back to the “real world”.
