Good Shepherd Parish Center Good Shepherd’s Parish Center is a 2-story, 29,000 sq. ft. facility that includes 8 meeting rooms, 4 administrative offices, 2 conference rooms, preschool and extended care facilities, welcome lobby, elevator, restroom facilities, an outdoor courtyard, expanded storage, up to 20 new parking spaces and a high school-sized gymnasium / multi-purpose room that seats up to 700 people. Why do we need a Parish Center? Since our founding in 1970, Good Shepherd Catholic Church has experienced tremendous growth. With nearly 6,000 registered families and dozens of active ministries and organizations, our meeting space at Good Shepherd has become insufficient. In order for the mission of our Church to continue, we must invest in the facilities necessary for these important groups to conduct their planning, prayer and activities that serve God’s kingdom. For the last several years, the parish has been planning a building project so that our facilities can accommodate the needs of our mission. The outcome of these efforts was a decision to invest in a Parish Center that would serve Good Shepherd for generations. It was determined that the most pressing needs were meeting rooms to accommodate faith formation for adults and children, meeting rooms for our many organizations/ ministries, and a large space for social gatherings. • • • • • Gymnasium / Multi-purpose Room (Seats: 700) Pre-School & Extended Care Facilities Healthcare Room (School Nurse) 2 Conference Rooms / 4 Administrative Offices Expanded Storage / Welcoming Lobby / Restroom Facilities • • • • • Gymnasium / Multi-purpose Room (Seats: 700) Pre-School & Extended Care Facilities Healthcare Room (School Nurse) 2 Conference Rooms / 4 Administrative Offices Expanded Storage / Welcoming Lobby / Restroom Facilities First Floor • Gymnasium / Multi-purpose Room (Seats: 700) • Pre-School & Extended Care Facilities • Healthcare Room (School Nurse) • 2 Conference Rooms / 4 Administrative Offices • Expanded Storage / Welcoming Lobby / Restrooms Second Floor • 8 Meeting Rooms • 2 Restrooms • Expanded Storage • 1 Retractable Wall to create larger Meeting Room How much will it cost? Initial estimates for the entire project are $5.9 million. We believe that a sealed bidding process will reduce our final cost even further. Exhibit E – Elevations How are we planning to pay for it? Over the past 10 years, the parish and school have saved a total of $2.5 million. A $3.0 million capital campaign, entitled “Building Our Future Together”, is now underway which will be asking all families to prayerfully make a pledge toward our new Parish Center. Where needed, we will pursue bridge loans from the Diocese to maintain momentum and proper cash flow. How long will it take to build? Good Shepherd Parish Center will take an estimatedMod12-15 months to build. We are looking at energy efficiency in our building structure and windows, at reusing rain water to water our fields, and at solar energy solutions that could be incorporated in our roofing system. The southward-facing rooftops have been designed to absorb the maximum amount of solar energy. What size is the gymnasium, and how will it be used? The gymnasium will feature a standard high school-sized gym floor that can accommodate basketball, volleyball, badminton, gymnastics and more. In addition to expanding the school’s physical education offering, the gymnasium will provide a place for groups to meet and conferences to be held. A multi-purpose room that holds up to 700 people, the gymnasium will act as an additional parish hall serving large parish groups and events. Good Shepherd will now be able to host much needed youth events, marriage enrichment conferences and family nights to the nearly 6,000 families of Good Shepherd and the Diocese at large. Gymnasium / 8 Meeting Rooms / 4 Administrative Offices / 2 Conference Rooms Preschool & Extended Care Facilities / Outdoor Courtyard / Expanded Storage / New Parking Lot How do most people structure their pledge? Can I use a credit card? The suggested giving plan encourages an offering that can be spread over a 40-month period. The Pledge Card provides space for you to designate your total pledge, initial offering and payment interval that you request. A monthly pledge of $100/mo equals $4,000. A monthly pledge of $50/mo equals $2,000. Here are a few examples: Will more parking be added? Yes. As part of a newly-constructed entrance off Gold Coast Drive, a new parking lot will be added with up to 20 parking spaces. Will we still have a field? Yes. The new field area will be about half the size of the current one. The new area will be graded, re-seeded and designed to drain properly so that the field remains level and safe. What will happen to the old school administrative offices and faculty conference room? Moving the administrative offices to the first floor of the Parish Center will create additional space for our growing youth and faith formation ministries. While the faculty conference room will become a faith formation conference room, the administrative offices and school reception area will be converted into a youth center. Why are we building in such rough economic times? It may seem like a tough time to be asking for money, but it’s a great time to build. With construction costs continuing to decrease, the value of building now may save our parish hundreds of thousands of dollars. In fact, if you notice around the Diocese, several parishes are in the midst of building projects while prices are in decline. How much is my fair share? No one can answer that question for you. Each family’s circumstances are unique. We do ask you to reflect on how much God has given to you and prayerfully respond with great love and generosity. If you believe in the mission and growth of our Church community, we ask you to make a weekly or monthly pledge for 40 months. If every family made a weekly pledge of $10, $15 or $20, we’d reach our goal. Please consider your commitment to this Capital Campaign as additional support for the Church. Regular Sunday collections are still needed to ensure that the day-to-day programs and services are maintained. Plans to give you a future full of hope. When you call me, when you go to pray to me, I will listen to you. When you look for me, you will find me. Yes, when you seek me with all your heart, you will find me with you, says the LORD…” – Jeremiah 29:11-14 We Are the “Living Stones” In 1970, the Diocese of San Diego set about to build the Church of the Good Shepherd in the community of Mira Mesa. This church was to be built not only of bricks and mortar, but was envisioned to be a Catholic community built of living stones, to be a center of outreach to the people of Mira Mesa. This church was to be built of living witnesses to the new life received in baptism and formed in the school of discipleship that is the Eucharist. These living stones have built up a community of faith in which people from diverse cultures, languages and life experiences have found a home and accepted a mission. This mission is rooted in the lived experience of listening attentively to the word of God, reflecting upon its meaning in the life and call of each member of the church and then acting upon this word to make Jesus present in the lives of all who enter into communion with God through the sacraments. “Here at Good Shepherd we have one of the most active youth ministry programs in the Diocese. It’s not just youth ministry that’s active however. Drive by here on any given night and you will see that God is alive in this community, so alive in fact, many groups, youth included, have a difficult time getting space to host their events. Growing the physical facility of the parish not only helps the youth ministry program, it helps every organization and group within our parish.” – Pat Clasby, Coordinator of Youth Ministry “St. Paul tells us that teaching is one of the most important gifts that God gives to the Church. Researchers have documented that Catholic schools keep communities strong, and history has taught that the survival of the Church depends on our youth being educated in the ways of a Catholic life. What parents begin at home, the Catholic school extends to society. Our new parish center will secure that benefit for our entire faith community.” – Mrs. C, Principal, Good Shepherd Catholic School “Each person in the community of Good Shepherd is an important part of our future growth because each person is a living stone that is necessary to continue the building of a beautiful church and community that will give glory to God.” – Father Michael Robinson, Pastor What are our goals? • Transformation – both physical and spiritual – individually and as one faith family • Stewardship – the acknowledgment that all that we are and possess come from God – followed by a deeper understanding, surrender and commitment to building God’s Kingdom on earth • Sacrificial Giving – stepping out in faith, allowing the Holy Spirit to work through us by engaging in an authentic process of prayer and discernment, asking our Lord for guidance, wisdom & courage • Community Building – bringing people of different groups together and binding them by a common goal and a common faith What is meant by a “physical and spiritual transformation”? Consistent with our Catholic Tradition, our vision of a Capital Campaign is centered on Prayer, Sacrifice & Trust. Although Capital Campaigns focus much of their activities on raising funds, they can be a catalyst for transformation within a parish community. Campaigns that speak to the Church’s Mission and challenge parishioners to take this time to evaluate how they perceive Church and recommit to deeper and more authentic commitment to prayer, stewardship, our interior spiritual life and the transforming power of Jesus Christ. The best Capital Campaigns serve as a unifying force within the parish. As we embark on this journey of physical and spiritual transformation, we ask our Lord, the Good Shepherd to lovingly watch over His flock and protect and guide us. “A very worthwhile and long-awaited Part III of Good Shepherd’s comprehensive plan. Our youth will soon have a safe, educational environment for activities that help them grow in faith and embark on their evangelizing responsibility and mission.” Our Mission Good Shepherd Catholic Church is a welcoming, multi-cultural Catholic community of faith. We believe in a life rooted in prayer, sacraments and ministry; a life that is deepened through life-long education and faith formation; a life lived in vocation through marriage and family life; a life of faithful stewardship and humble service; a life that more fully reveals the face of Christ to the world. As disciples of Jesus Christ, we are committed to His mission of spreading the Gospel and building the Kingdom of God through daily worship, evangelization and charitable outreach to those in need. We strive to be transformed in the Spirit of Christ to become a unifying and healing presence in a broken world. We hope to bring people back to faith and lead them into the fullness of life. We look forward to sharing the Good News of God’s love in compassion, humility and obedience, joyfully anticipating eternal life in heaven. – Tan Nguyen, Coordinator of Vietnamese Faith Formation “Building our new Parish Center is not merely to alleviate space needs, but rather it is a consequence of our fidelity of our baptismal call: to proudly profess the faith of the Church in Christ Jesus our Lord. We need to recommit ourselves as practicing Catholics to life-long-learning. This means, regardless of our age, we need ongoing faith formation. The Parish Center project is a sign of our fidelity to this vision and will serve thousands in its first year alone.” – Glenn Valois, Director of Faith Formation Good Shepherd Catholic Church 8200 Gold Coast Drive, San Diego, CA 92126 (858) 271-0207 www.goodshepherdparish.net Donations are tax-deductible as allowed by law.
