“2006 Regional Young Generation Forum in Texas”
1. OBJECTIVES
The primary objective for the Regional YG Forum was to promote YG network by
inviting students, researchers, young professionals and faculty members from UTD, UTA,
TAMU, Rice, U of Houston, UT Austin and other colleges/universities in Texas and to
inspire them to recognize the importance of leadership, organizational and effective
communication skills in successful management of their career development. The
ultimate goal was to recruit new KSEA members in Texas by increasing the visibility of
KSEA and by demonstrating great teamwork among the KSEA local chapters in Texas.
2. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The YG Forum was successfully held at the University of Texas at Dallas campus on
June 10, 2006 with a total of 110 people registered and 90 in attendance. This was
accomplished with a budget of $10,000 that included $5,000 support from the KSEA HQ.
Approximately 25% of the attendance was 2nd generation Korean-American students and
remaining 75% was a mix of 1st and 1.5 generation students and professionals. The
keynote speech focused on future job markets and skills that are important for success.
The messages were well aligned with the Leadership Panel Discussion and
Communication Workshop. As a parting gift, the “Crucial Conversations” book was
handed out. From the Forum survey results, it was clear that attendees appreciated the
networking opportunities and exposure to topics related to future career development.
The attendees expressed strong interest in learning more about resume writing, interview
skills, internship and project management skills. Presentation summaries and event
photos have been posted at www.ksea-sw.org/ygforum. The plan is to continue to provide
useful information to the attendees and encourage them to join KSEA. This event
represents a significant milestone in the KSEA history in Texas and will serve as a
turning point to promote stronger fellowship and support among the YG KoreanAmerican scientists and engineers. The goal of the organizing committee is to build an
event preparation kit to help others get a head start for future events.

4. SPEAKERS
Bob Helms, Ph.D. Keynote Speaker
Bob Helms was named Dean of the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering & Computer
Science at UT Dallas on June 1st, 2003. Prior to UTD, Bob served as president of
International SEMATECH (ISMT) in July of 2001, and CEO in September of
2001. Previous to his SEMATECH appointment, Helms was Corporate Vice President
and Director of Silicon Technology Research at Texas Instruments (TI) in Dallas, Texas
and was responsible for TI’s advanced R&D in silicon process, equipment and materials
technology. He also oversaw TI’s partnerships with ISMT, suppliers and research
institutes. Helms came to TI in 1997 as Director of the Components and Materials
Research Center from Stanford University, where he had been a professor in the
electrical engineering department from 1976 to 2000. At Stanford, Helms also served as
Director of Solid State Industrial Affiliates, one of the first consortia formed to promote
education and research in solid state technology. He was named Professor Emeritus in
1999.
Kun Chee (Casey) Youn, Ph.D. Global Leadership Panelist
Dr. Casey Youn is founder and president of WEECO International Corporation, a
company that specializes in control of air pollutants (VOC emissions) from refineries
and chemical plants and other industrial facilities. Youn built it into an industry leader in
the United States over the past ten years.
Youn was principal development engineer of a new weather resistant epoxy resin at
Shell Oil Company from 1969 to1993. He developed and taught oil and gas well stream
processing and dehydration courses to younger engineers.
Esther K. Yang, Ph.D. Global Leadership Panelist
Dr. Esther Yang is R&D Director, Clinical Chemistry, Abbott Labs. Dr. Yang spent
over 25 years in Medical Diagnostics industry specialized in hospital blood testing
instrument systems and reagents. She received her Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from
the University of California, Berkeley and did her Post Docoral research at the
University of Pennsylvania. She worked at DuPont and Beckman prior to joining Abbott
in 1997. She has been responsible for successful commercialization of two major fully
automated, high speed Clinical Chemistry Systems that can measure up to 2000 blood
tests per hour along with over 100 assay reagents. The business has grown to $200MM
in sales.
Brian Park, Ph.D. Global Leadership Panelist
Dr. Byungkyu “Brian” Park is an Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at the
University of Virginia. Prior to joining the University of Virginia, he was a Research
Fellow at the National Institute of Statistical Sciences and a Post-Doctoral Research
Associate at the North Carolina State University. Dr. Park received B.S. and the M.S.
from Hanyang University, Seoul, Korea, in 1993 and 1995, respectively, and Ph.D. from
the Texas A&M University in 1998. Dr. Park is a recipient of a Charley V. Wootan
Award (for best Ph.D. dissertation) from the Council of University Transportation
Centers, and 2004 ASCE ExCEEd Teaching Fellow. His research interests include
stochastic optimization, traffic signal control, simulation model calibration and
validation, and traffic flow theory.
John F. Bourke Communication Workshop Leader
John Bourke is founder and President of Bourke & Associates, a Dallas-based
consulting and training company. In the past decade, Bourke & Associates has helped
hundreds of organizations, including many of the Fortune 500; realize quick, hardhitting results and sustainable competitive advantage.
John will highlight some of the research and compelling insights from the best selling
training "Crucial Conversations" while engaging you in one or two practical mastery
exercises to help you build connections between leadership, communication, results and
relationships.

It is our great pleasure to announce an exciting up coming Young Generation (YG)
Communication/Leadership Forum to be held at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD)
on June 10th, 2006. This forum is sponsored by Abbott Labs, EM Technologies Inc,
Samsung Telecommunications America, UTD, and the KSEA HQ. KSEA was
established in 1971, and three local chapters, North Texas, Austin, and SW State

9. REFLECTIONS
2006 KSEA Regional YG Forum in Texas was a major milestone for the KSEA YG
program in terms of the number of participants, budget, forum agenda, presentations, and
forum outcome judging from the participants’ comments and feedback.
Three KSEA Chapters in Texas demonstrated a great example of collaborative effort to
pull a program of this magnitude in just about 3 months. This YG forum will serve as a
positive tipping point to revive good fellowship and new membership interest. NT,
Austin, and SW State Chapters have cooperated with multiple universities/colleges in the
greater Texas area for this Forum. Students particularly showed strong interest in career
development, leadership development, networking, communication as well as interview
skills development. Initially, the expectation was that the regional event would be an
easier version of the national KSEA YGTLC in project scope, challenges associated with
geographical spread, budget, logistics, organizing committee cooperation, etc.
However, ground transportation, registration and local preparation turned out to be not so
simple to manage. Early involvement and sharing of responsibilities with local KSAs
might have been a better idea to efficiently prepare for such an event. This would have
given the students an opportunity to exercise their leadership real time. In reality, this
would have been difficult to implement in Dallas as KSAs involvement in KSEA
activities have been rather limited. The Forum was a great way to plant a seed for future
events. Based on feedback from participants and organizing committee, the following
comments can be made:
The YG Forum we believe is an effective way to attract new members and keep the
current members stay interested. There is so much we can do to help the YG scientists
and engineers get a head start. We need to continue to fine tune the Forum content and
flow to meet or exceed the participant expectations. The overall feedback has been very
positive but there were some lessons learned:
1) Intermittent audio problems occurred but no on site support was available when
needed. Had to turn off the audio system towards the end. Recommend an
audio/IT expert on call throughout the entire meeting.

2) Presentations ran over time that took away the Q/A slot for the Leadership Panel
Discussion. Rushed at the end. Recommend a time tracker.
3) Dress rehearsal the day before. Walked through the flow in the morning and ran
into glitches. For example, the banner could not be hung on the wall where we
wanted. It was hectic to make the last minute change. In the end, we missed the
opportunity to take a group photo under the banner.
4) A joint Core Team event was considered after the Forum but not implemented
due to the funding and resource limitation.
5) Challenging to forecast and plan the accurate count of attendees for food. How
can we educate all on the importance of timely response?
6) Early planned financial support from KSEA HQs to this kind of regional YG
forum might be more effective to have a better preparation.
7) Local KSEA chapters need to have continuous network with local KSAs to
maintain a close relationship and provide them simple version of seminars
regarding career development and leadership issues. Without local KSEA
chapter’s support, it may not be easy to draw students’ interest in KSEA
activities or not effective to organize KSEA regional YG forums which require
significant cooperation between students and organizing committee
8) To better recruit more new KSEA members, follow-up emails should be sent out
with more detailed info on how to join KSEA and a short summary version of the
exit survey results.
We recommend that we build a YG Forum preparation kit that includes a funding request
proposal template, timeline, deliverables list, budget template, announcements,
newspaper ads, program brochure template, name tags, table tags, web link and exit
survey form template. And, offer up one of the experienced organizing members as
advisor or oversight. The use of the Forum preparation kit should not be limited to YG
membership drives. It can be applied to other event organization.

10. BUDGET
The total Expenditure projected is $9,432.11 against the Plan of $9,794.50. The Net Balance
projected against the total projected Income of $10,000 is $567.89. The surplus will be used for
recruitment of YG members among the three Chapters.

I really enjoyed this Forum. I learned a lot about what a true leader looks like, and also I
learned to socialize with other Koreans. As a 1.5 generation, I couldn't perfectly "fit-in" to
either 1 generation or 2 generation. but through this Forum, I got to understand the both
generations and I was so proud to be a Korean science major student. Especially I was
very impressed after I heard Dr. Yang's speech. I am too studying in a pharmacy related
field, and I was very impressed to see an Asian female could become so successful in
an American pharmaceutical market. if I get a chance, I would really participate in the
Forum again. Thank you very much.

The KSEA Regional YG Forum was an excellent oppurtunity to gain information on

informative, but it was also very inspiring to the younger Korean-American generations.

Dear all,
As a former President of KSA at the University of Houston and also as a member of
KSEA now, I deeply appreciate all of you having such a hard time to take care of all the
event, which was held very successfully.
I believe that your care, concerns, and love to the young Korean generations made this
forum successful and meaningful.
We (mostly U of H students) had talked to each other about what was good, what we
had learned from it, and what we had to do to get things developed (and plus much more
things) while we were on the way back to Houston. Everyone really enjoyed participating
in the forum, meeting new faces, hanging out with each other all along the weekend.
Thanks to all your efforts, it became a very good opportunity for all UH participants to
become one and have a great time.
Especially, I would like to thank Dr. Ryu from the bottom of my heart who gave us such
an amazing oppoutunity and let us know the existence of KSEA and what it exactly is.
