MRA Night with the
Redbirds 2012Highlights Inside
Dear Fellow Members:
Our last speaker meeting in April was an eye-opening
one. Our speaker was from ADC which is the consulting
firm for all ADA compliance issues for the City of Memphis. I hope everyone took the
time to read and take advantage of the offer to have ADC come to your establishment and do a full survey of all compliance issues. For those of you who didn’t this is
a bit of what was presented.
We operate in a 50 year old building so it’s easy to imagine the volume of compliance issues we found, but understanding where we fall short is just the beginning.
The Americans with Disabilities Act is enforced by the Department of Justice, but has
no official inspection or regulating body. So, the concern comes from being open to
litigation. Unfortunately, according to ADC, this litigation is largely initiated by parties
looking to file suit, not necessarily legitimately concerned patrons. Either way, unless
you have started the process of understanding your own compliance issues, you
are open to this litigation. Even if you inherently know that compliance in a particular
area is not feasible, the only defense in a legal action is to understand compliance
needs and have a plan to correct or an assessment that clearly demonstrates that
compliance is “technically unfeasible.”
This is just a taste of the detail involved. If you are not sure of your ADA compliance
status, I would encourage you to start the process of finding out and protecting your
business from litigation, fines and expenses then mandated to correct issues.
Sincerely,
Mike Miller

MISSION STATEMENT: The Memphis Restaurant Association (MRA) is the premiere
support organization dedicated to the success of our industry and community now
and into the future. We provide useful, accessible tools, educational services and
governmental representation to promote the stability and growth of our members.
The MRA is dedicated to building community relationships and involvement in order to
increase membership and create a spirit of fellowship among its members.
Father’s Day is celebrated on the 3rd
Sunday of June each year. First celebrated in Spokane, Washington on June
19, 1910, Father’s Day was invented by
Sonora Smart Dodd. Her father, William
Jackson Smart, a civil war veteran, was
a single parent who raised his six children in Spokane, Washington.
Sonora was inspired by Anna Jarvis’s
efforts to establish Mother’s Day. Although she initially suggested June 5,
her father’s birthday, the celebration was
deferred to the third Sunday of June.
In recent years, retailers have adapted to the holiday by promoting greeting
cards and traditionally male-oriented gifts
such as electronics and tools. Schools
and other children’s programs commonly have activities to make Father’s Day
gifts.
More phone calls are made in the
United States during Mother’s Day than
during Father’s Day, but the percentage
of collect calls on Father’s Day is much
higher, making it the busiest day of the
year for collect calls. Also, calls during
both Mother’s Day and Father’s Day
tend to last longer. Father’s Day is also
accompanied by a smaller total number
of phone calls, greeting cards and gifts
than Mother’s Day.
Member Spotlight
This
month’s spotlighted members are Max’s Sports Bar and Memphis Ice Machine Company. Spotlighted members are chosen
at random from members who participate in MRA meetings and events.
Max’s Sports Bar
Established in 2007, Max’s Sports Bar is a quaint yet energetic spot located
in the historic South Main Arts District in the heart of Downtown Memphis. At Max’s they strive to offer the premier amenities of a sports bar while
staying true to their friendly neighborhood bar roots.
With a ratio of one flat screen per every
three seats, you will never miss a second
of the action. If sitting on the patio is more
your style, then the large deck area with
fans, heaters, and multiple TVs ensures
your comfort as you cheer on your favorite
team. Max’s also boasts cable TV, satellite,
and numerous sports packages. So chances are if you want a game, they have it.
Don’t confuse Max’s as only a sports bar, they are also a hub for the South Main
residence and anyone else looking for an easy going atmosphere and that “corner bar” appeal. Catch some live music on the deck, fun parties, happy hours,
and great customer promotions! While you’re lounging around with good friends
and enjoying great beer and spirits, try their pub food. Along with a delicious
variety of wings, bbq nachos, and other tasty menu selections you’ll find service
that is second to none. It’s evident by the smiles you see on the faces of patrons
and staff!
Located at:
115 G.E. Patterson
Sunday-Thursday 4:30-12:00
Friday/Saturday 4:30-3:00- but

sporting events.

“DIRTY SON OF A BEACH”
“After meeting Kimberly at a local
food show, we spoke about the benefits of the MRA and my business.
She went on to mention an upcoming meet and greet with the TABC.
We had been open for three years
without liquor, due to capacity restraints. At this event we gathered
information about a new liquor license that we could obtain. Several months later we had liquor at
Max’s! Needless to say, joining the
MRA was one of the best decisions
we have made.”

Sales • Service • Rentals • Parts
During the heat of the summer in Memphis every restaurateur knows that having
plenty of ice is paramount. Memphis Ice Machine Company has been
addressing this need for over thirty-one years. Started in 1977 by Robert E.
Halfacre, the company has been guided by two main principles. Number one is
to treat customers like the lifeblood of the company that they are, and number two
is that having happy employees is the best way to achieve number one.
Following the principles of its founder, Memphis Ice Machine Company has
amassed a customer base that numbers well into the thousands. The company
has also grown a loyal staff including second and third generation family members
where more than half of the staff has over fifteen years of service and several have
over thirty years of dedication to the company and its customers.
Memphis Ice Machine Company has proudly distributed Ice-O-Matic brand
ice machines for twenty-five years and truly believes in their motto: Ice. Pure And
Simple™. In addition to sales, a full service rental program is offered for those
who want a guarantee with their ice needs. The company also has a large and diverse parts department, stocking parts
for most brands of ice machines, and a knowledgeable staff. The service fleet includes nine trucks and technicians with
over 125 years of combined experience.
Along with following its founder’s principles, Memphis Ice Machine
Company strives daily to keep the restaurants of Memphis in ice
through emulating the equipment it represents, by being easy to use
and dependable.

buds new business and new contacts!
MRA associates filled the community room at Panera Bread in Laurelwood on May 10th for our spring MRA Associates Coffee Club (MRAACC).
Members celebrated the beautiful spring morning by enjoying a delicious breakfast with coffee, pastries, muffins and quiche.
Business cards were passed, but more importantly members began to identify ways they can advocate for each other, cultivate
new business relationships and strategize as to how our association can increase our members’ business. Make plans to join
us at Panera Laurelwood for the two remaining coffee clubs this year.

Restaurant and bar
owners are increasingly
facing legal action for not
obtaining permission before they air pay-per-view
shows in their establishments. Click here to

need to know.
Lawsuits over pay-per-view events can hit restaurants
owners hard. With the increased popularity of pay-per-view
mixed martial arts (MMA) and similar events, restaurant
and bar owners are under growing pressure to provide this
type of televised programming. But many bars and restaurants are doing so without permission, and the result is
often legal action and big fines.
