Coffee rich in flavour and tradition
The origins of this plant are lost in the mists of time, and are steeped
in legend. Likely originating from a region called Kaffa, in Ethiopia,
coffee plants require a hot and humid climate, and today the most
premium quality plants are grown mostly in South and Central
America.
For its blends, Caffè Negro selects the best coffees from Costa Rica,
Guatemala, Brazil, Nicaragua, and El Salvador in America, together
with plantations from Ethiopia where coffee was born.

COFFEE COMES FROM
COSTA RICA
Modern day Costa Rica owes much to the trade of coffee,
which here is called grano de oro, or golden bean. The first
sacks of coffee were exported to Panama, Chile and England
in the 1920s and 1930s; since then, coffee production in
Costa Rica, which stands out thanks to its high quality, has
always been a source of pride, and an important resource
for the Country.
The area is ideal for growing coffee: the soil is volcanic,
rich in nitrogen and phosphates, and the climate at high
altitudes is perfect, between 1,400 and 1,700 metres above
sea level, which is where the coffee is grown.
Mostly Arabica is grown in a varietal with a full and soft
body, and bright acidity.
GUATEMALA
In Guatemala, coffee cultivation dates back to 1773,
and was introduced by Jesuits.
Their production is one of the best in the world,
especially at higher altitudes: the cold air blowing
on the Cuchumatanes mountains allows coffee
to be grown up to 1,900 metres. The most widely
grown varietals are washed Arabica and Robusta.
The Arabica produced has a spicy fragrance and a
chocolatey aroma.
BRASILE
Brazil is the first world producer of unwashed
Arabica coffee and caters to a large portion of world
demand for coffee.
Grown at various altitudes, from 200 to 1,000 metres
a.s.l., Brazil’s Arabica is exported in large quantities.
NICARAGUA
Coffee cultivation in Nicaragua is a relatively recent
phenomenon compared to other parts of South
America, but the quality is excellent nonetheless.
Cultivations are present at more or less all
altitudes, from 500 to 2,000 metres a.s.l. Particularly
noteworthy is the fact that Nicaragua grows the
largest coffee beans in the world, the Maragogype
– the largest Arabica varietal, and it is for this very
reason it’s called the “elephant bean.”
EL SALVADOR
Directly south of Guatemala, the small nation of
El Salvador produces natural washed Arabica
coffee, and Maragogype, especially for foreign
markets – in fact, 2/3 of production is destined
for export. Coffee is produced at high altitudes
and is characterised by a light, soft taste and
moderate acidity; the coffee from lower altitudes,
instead, has a fuller body and is called Central
Standard.
ETIOPIA
In Ethiopia, and more precisely in the region
of Kaffa, coffee grows spontaneously:
Ethiopia is the only Country in the world
where the plants are found wild. Typical
varietals of the area are the Harrar and the
Ghimbi.
THE ADVENTURES
OF ITALIAN COFFEE
It was the year 1955, when the brothers Negro decided to open a coffee roasting company that still
bears their name to this day: Torrefazione Caffè Negro.
The company was founded along the banks of the river Arno, in the province of Florence, and from
the very beginning specialised in producing quality coffee through rigorous selection of raw materials,
always keeping up with the latest trends, in order to offer an aromatic, special coffee.
With over 60 years of experience, Caffè Negro has become a well established brand, handling both
wholesale and retail coffee sales offering mocha and espresso blends, coffee in pods and capsules.
PRODUCTION AND SALE OF COFFEE
The new establishment features modern plants that ensure high quality Italian coffee. The roasting
plant operates according to the principles of slow roasting to ensure the development of the sensory
properties of each coffee varietal.
Thanks to years of experience and quality, Torrefazione Caffè Negro is focussed on satisfying the
needs of its clients, and collaborates with them to serve--every day--excellent coffee according to
Italian tradition.

THE HISTORY OF OUR LOGO
The original logo was designed by painter Sineo Gemignani (Livorno 1917 – Empoli 1973), a highly
renowned artist in the figurative history of Empoli and an important painter on the Tuscan and Italian
art scene.
He designed an upside-down stylised coffee cup which looked like a black person, thus recalling the
surname of the coffee-making family which is Negro.
This was the company’s trademark until the early 00s. When the company relocated to its new
premises, the black person was made smaller and the name NEGRO was highlighted.
In 2012, the logo was substituted with a coffee bean in order to internationalise the brand, modernise
it and adapt it to new markets.
ROASTING
COFFEE ROASTING is the central stage of coffee production and it is essential to make a quality product. A grain of coffee, when it is still green, is roasted with hot air to make it lightweight, brittle and
give it that special flavour that created a drink beloved in both the West and the East.
