SpeakerBiographies MatthewHopkins ChiefExecutiveBHRUT Matthew Hopkinswas appointed asChief Executivein April 2014. Prior to joining BHRUT, Matthew was Chief Executive ofEpsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trustfor three years. He has also worked at a number of other London teaching hospitals including Guy’s and St Thomas’, Imperial, and Barts and The London.Starting his NHS career as a nurse, Matthew trained at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge before spendingfiveyearsasaMacmillannurse TehmeenaKhanMBBS,BSc(Hons),MRCP DarziFellowBHRUT Tehmeena is an Acute Internal Medicine Specialty RegistrarwithinHEENCEL.SheiscurrentlyonanOutof Programme Experience (OOPE), undertaking a Darzi Fellowship at Barking, Havering & Redbridge NHS Trust. During this year she has implemented the IHI Open School Chapter, led quality improvement clinics and established several improvement projects across the trust. This includes several patient safety initiatives in collaboration with UCLPartners. She has also helped to draft and implement the quality improvement strategy. Tehmeenahasestablishedandnowco-chairstheHealth EducationNorthCentralandEastLondonQualityImprovementBoard.Aspartofthisboard, shehasorganisedtheregionalconferencefor2016,whichisbeinghostedbyBHRHospitals. WithinthefieldofAcuteMedicine,Tehmeena’sinterestsincludesurgicalliaisonandperioperativecare.ShewasawardedaWinstonChurchillFellowshipearlierthisyeartoexplore theHospitalistModelofcareintheUSA.SheisatraineerepresentativeforAcuteMedicine withinHEENCELandisacorememberofthePanLondonAcuteMedicineNetwork(PLAN). Chair:DrMaureenDalzielMDMBChBFFPH ChiefExecutive:MatthewHopkins AndyHeeps AssociateMedicalDirectorBHRUT Andydevelopedapassionforleadingimprovement when he was responsible for quality and safety in one of the UK’s largest single-site maternity units, while working as a Consultant Obstetrician and ClinicalLeadforIntrapartumCareatBHRUT. Andy recently took on the new role of Associate Medical Director for Quality Improvement within thetrust.Hisareasofresponsibilityincludebuilding and developing quality improvement capabilities, strategies and methodologies. He also chairs the trust’s patient safety group and leads the quality strategy group: ‘My aim is to instill a cultureofcontinuousimprovementthroughouttheorganisationsothateachpart,clinical and non-clinical, can continuously improve the quality of the services we provide throughouttheorganisation.’ BHRUT is at a point of transition and aspires to be ‘outstanding’. With his role as a GenerationQFellowatTheHealthFoundation,Andyhopestoimprovehisunderstandingof thechangeprocessandhowitismanagedinalargeacutetrust.Andywantstoapplyhis learningtoleadinganambitiousprojecttoreduceharmtopatientsthroughimprovements indiagnosticservicesacrossBHRUT:‘Iwanttoleadthisprojectinawaythatenthusesand utilises the skills of our staff, creating a home-grown organic process of quality improvementthatinspiresstafftoembracequalityimprovementaspartoftheirday-to-day lifeatthetrust.’ IainMcJennettMAMBA ImprovementFellowBHRUT Iainhasworkedinindustry,specificallyHealthcare,fornearly20years.Inthistimehehas had a diverse career with roles that have covered a variety of functions from sales and marketing to external affairs and strategy. These roles have allowed him to work with healthcareorganisationsinallsectorsacrosstheUKandoccasionallybeyond.Mostrecently Iain’sfocushasbeenontheanalysingandinterpretingthechangingNHSandtheimpactof policyoncommercialorganisations.HeholdsMastersdegreeinPoliticsandisstudyingfora MastersinBusinessAdministrationfromManchesterUniversity. ReferringtothepositionIainsaid,“tocomeintotheNHSandworkwiththeteamduringthis criticaltimehaspresentedauniquechallenge.QIisfundamentaltothecurrent,andfuture, deliveryoftheNHS.Itisinherentintheworkwedoanddirectlyconcernsourabilitytooffer theserviceandexperienceourpatientsdeserve.Itisnotsolelyabout‘makingthingsbetter’ by doing the same thingsand ‘trying harder’.Instead,QIrequiresanewsetofknowledge andskillstoputthisapproachintopractice.” DianeMillerMBA VicePresident,VirginiaMasonMedicalCenterExecutiveDirector,VirginiaMasonInstitute Diane joined Virginia Mason in October 2008 with the formation of The Virginia Mason Institute (VMI). Her responsibilities include the design and delivery of education and training services in the Virginia Mason ProductionSystem(VMPS)forhealthcareprovidersand organizations. She also has responsibility for the Center for Health Care Solutions, an innovation unit working to create a new model of health care delivery based on VMPS principles that achieves reliable evidence-based carewithhighpatientsatisfactionandatalowercost. DianepreviouslyworkedatVirginiaMasonfor23yearsin avarietyofrolesincludingOrganizationalDevelopmentin2001whenVirginiaMasonfirst began its journey. She was a key member of the executive team helping to design the infrastructuretosupporttheadoptionofVMPSasourmanagementmethod. Prior to returning to Virginia Mason, Diane was a full time consultant working with other healthcareorganizationslearningtoapplytheToyotaProductionSystem(TPS)andatthe Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) as director and faculty for the Robert Wood JohnsonFoundationgrant,TransformationCareandtheBedside. DianehasextensivetraininginapplyingTPSinhealthcareincludingastudymissiontoJapan to the Shingijutsu Gemba Kaizen. Diane has led many rapid improvement events and developedhealthcarecurriculumforthetrainingofleadersandstaffinTPS.Aspartofthe executiveleadershipteamshemaintainsherVMPScertification.Dianeisafrequentspeaker ofthetopicoftheapplicationofTPSinhealthcare. During the middle part of Brian’s career he moved from the product development organisationtoeducationandtrainingduringwhichtimehewascertifiedtotrainandlead teams in all aspects of quality associated with the development of products and manufacturing.Partofthatprocesswastointegratetechnicalefficiencywithpeopleskills, integrating these two aspects in recognition that without individuals understanding their impactonothers,teamworkandtaskcompletionislikelytobesuboptimal. Brianreturnedtoproductdevelopmentasatechnicalspecialistforqualitydeployment.In recognition of this expertise Brian led powertrain technology integration that developed into his current role, developing and delivering a global corporate system engineering processescalledSystemsEngineeringExcellencethroughDesign(SEED).Thecriticalaspect ofthisprocesswasafocusonmanaginginterfacesbetweenengineeringsystems.Ithasalso providedtheanalyticalplatformtointegratethegrowingnumberoftechnologiesthatwill beintroducedintovehiclesinthefuture.Thesuccessofthesystemsengineeringapproach hasfurtherdevelopedintohisleadroletointegrateinnovationintoasystemsengineering designprocess. She works for Royal Free Hospital Trust Patient Safety Programme and as a freelanceconsultantandfellowfortheUCLCentreforBehaviourChange.Shespecialisesin designing and delivering behaviour change interventions for health care professionals and patientsandapplyingtheorytopractice.Hermaininterestsareinpatientsafety,theroleof health professional behaviour in implementing evidence-based care and changing lifestyle behavioursrelatedtoobesity. Siri worked for UCL Health Psychology Research Group investigating the behavioural influences on health care professional compliance with an evidence-based care pathway, the“SepsisSix”,todesignaninterventionimplementthepathwaymoreeffectively.Shealso workedforUCLHospitalCentreforWeightLoss,MetabolicandEndocrineSurgerydesigning anddeliveringaCognitiveBehavioural-basedprogrammesforbariatricsurgerypatients. Siri runs AntiDiet Weight Loss and Wellness, which is dedicated to helping individuals and organisations develop long-term, sustainable habits for weight management and optimal health.WithAntiDiet,shecoachesclientsone-to-onewith,runsgroupfitnessprogrammes andconsultsorganisations. PeterTooheyBSc,PGDip ImprovementManagerUCLPartners PeterTooheyiscurrentlythePatientSafetyProgramme Improvement manager UCLPartners, an Academic Health Science Partnership in London. Previous roles include extensive experience working within Paediatric criticalcareserviceswithinaspecialistNHSTrust.Roles have included Lead Nurse of a Paediatric High Dependency Unit & Departmental Patient Safety Lead, as well as clinical management and coordination of these critical care services. He has previously lead teamsthroughQualityImprovementinmultiplesetting in UK, Africa & Australia. Currently he is project managing a number of quality improvement work streams across 13 acute care trusts within the UCLPartners geography. He is a Quality, Service Improvement and Redesign (QSIR) Practitioner and is a PRINCE2 project managementpractitioner. Rachana began her career in education at Great Ormond Street Hospital, supportingeducationandtrainingforpaediatricdoctors. Rachana has recently worked closely with UCLPartners trainees under the lead provider model supporting directoratesandtraineesinimprovingtheireducation DrZofiaDas-Gupta ProjectManager,MeasurementandAnalyticsUCLPartners Zofia leads the implementation of informatics platforms that support healthcare staff in running safety and quality improvement projects across UCLPartners. Zofia is also a measurement lead for the UCLPartners Patient Safety Programme providing expertise in data collection and analysis. Zofiahasabackgroundinmedicalsciencesandhasworked closelywithcliniciansinacademiaandbiotechcompanies. She was a research fellow at Harvard Medical School, workingonanewtypeofvaccinefornewborns. Alfisanexperiencedinternationalhealthcarespecialistwithabackgroundinepidemiology andpublichealthscienceswhojoinedtheTrustinJanuary2016.Hepreviouslyhadrolesas ahealthcareconsultantatGEHealthcareFinnamoreandasHeadofHealthcareQualityfor Bupa'sGlobalDivision.Hehasexperienceofworkingwithover170hospitalsinmorethan 40 countries to develop protocols to benchmark facilities using recognised international standards and key performance indicators, including clinical outcomes and patient experience. He has worked with hospitals to implement key patient safety and quality improvement initiatives including clinical governance standards, safe surgery protocols, infectioncontrolandmedicationmanagementprocesses. AmandaWickens Matron,EmergencyDepartment,BHRUT Amanda has been in her current role at a Emergency Department Matron for 14 months. She has worked in the Emergency Department since qualifying as a nurse. Amanda is currently undertaking a Masters Degree in Leadership and Service Improvement in HealthcareatLondonSouthbankUniversity. Amanda is currently undertaking projects improving the delivery of patient care in the Resuscitation Unit within the ED and transforming the Urgent Care Centre at Queen’s Hospital.
