What SAE J1153 and SAE J1154 Certifications Mean to You
SAE J1153 — This SAE Standard specifies the test procedure to determine
minimum performance and durability characteristics for master cylinder
assemblies of current established designs, components of which conform to SAE
Standards. It is applicable to new assemblies from commercial production.
SAE J1154 — This SAE Standard specifies minimum performance and
durability requirements for master cylinder assemblies of current established
designs, components of which conform to SAE Standards. It is applicable to new
assemblies from commercial production. These requirements are based on the
required minimum standard for acceptable performance.
What FMVSS106 and SAEJ1401 Standards Mean to You
Brake hose is the only brake component required by the United States
government to pass a federal regulation.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) requires that brake hoses meet specific
performance and safety standards… the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard
(FMVSS) 106 and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) J1401. These standards
are comprised of 15 different tests.
All manufacturers and distributors of brake hoses sold in the United States must certify that these standards are met. A manufacturer is required to label the brake hose with their identifying mark and that “The symbol DOT, constituting a certification by the hose manufacturer that the hose conforms to all applicable motor vehicle safety standards.” (Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 571.106 S5.2.2a)
