The CARMABI Foundation was founded in 1955 as the Caribbean Marine Biological Institute. In addition to conducting and supporting biological research, the organization plays a major role in advising government and other organizations on the sustainable use of natural resources. Aside from providing scientific visitors basic waterfront lodging and laboratory facilities, CARMABI also collaborates with foreign and local academic partners to organize courses and workshops. Under its national parks program CARMABI also manages several protected areas (such as the 2000 hectare Christoffelpark and 10 km long coastal Shete Boka Park) and runs an educational program for local schoolchildren. CARMABI was initially supported through Dutch development funding, and later by the Island Government of Curaçao and the Central Government of the Netherlands Antilles. To fund its work today, CARMABI generates increasingly more of its income from visitor fees, scientific consultancy, park entrance fees and nature related activities.
