First of all, do you go by Mimi or Michelle?
My formal name is Michelle but I go by Mimi. When I first
started here in 1995 at the old hospital at 6 West, we had
about four or five Michelles working the night shift. A friend
of mine heard my husband call me Mimi and then she started
calling me Mimi and then everyone started calling me Mimi.

So you worked at UCH before?
I started here in 1993 as a CNA in the float pool while I
was going to nursing school. In 1995 I was hired as a new
graduate nurse on 6 West. I left [UCH] in 2007 and went to
Denver Health for the last eight years. I just came back on
July 13.

What brought you back here?
Carolyn Sanders [chief nursing officer] was pretty much my
boss my whole career here. So when the Magnet Program
director position came open, and – I was doing the same
position at Denver Health, but over here I’d work for Carolyn
again. It was a great opportunity.

my role is educating and supporting excellence, outcomes,
benchmarking and innovations, and involving staff nurses.
I’m also dedicated to improving the patient experience and
improving our outcomes using research and evidenced-based
practice to improve my practice and then to disseminate that
to others.
Another part of my role is making sure that we are recording
projects and initiatives that we are doing that we can
document for our fifth designation in three years. I work with
teams like the Magnet Steering Committee and Magnet
Mentors to achieve our goals and then teach staff what our
goals are so they can participate as well.
How did you get into this field?
I started off as a new grad nurse and not very long after I
was asked to become a charge nurse and then as a charge
nurse I decided I wanted to be a hospital manager. I was a
hospital manager and charge nurse for about five years, then I
became a manager in outpatient in ambulatory. Then I moved
to Denver Health and became manager of their progressive
care unit, and also managed the inpatient jail and dialysis
there. Then I took a job as a magnet program director and
also the new graduate nurse residency program there as well.
Probably since about 1999 I’ve been more in leadership roles.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Spend time with my family. I have two sons; Jake is 18 and
Max is 16. Jake just graduated from high school so I’ve been
getting him ready for college. They both go to Denver School
of the Arts so we’re a very artistic family and we spend a lot
of time going to music shows and art shows. I go hiking at
least once a week and I try to walk two miles every day. I’m
also an avid reader. We like to travel as a family. A big new
thing for us is cooking and all of us are trying our hand at that
right now.
If you could have one super power what would it be?
Well, I’m always wearing rose-colored glasses; seeing
things on the brighter side of everything … so my super
power would be to take any bad situation and make it into
something positive.

What was the last great book you read, or movie you saw?
Last movie I saw that was totally inspiring was the Amy
Winehouse documentary [“Amy”].
Any fun summer vacation plans?
My children were both working this summer. I’m originally
from Iowa and there is this beautiful lake there. My husband
and I went on our own for our very first trip away from our kids
and spent five days on this lake with my sister and her family,
boating and water skiing and camping.
Family Unit
Husband, Patrick, is an artist and designer and just opened a
new gallery/design business.
Son, Jake, 18, is a recent high school grad.
Son, Max, 16, is going into his junior year of high school.

Summer Reading List
In the last UCH Insider we featured four employees who love

Well, I have to be honest. There really isn’t much of a story. I just

Caffeine Free?
Last month I was a little concerned about the future financial
health of Dazbog. I was working out of the 17th Avenue
storefront for a couple of days, an hour or two at a time, and
I had this strange sensation that something was missing. It
took me a little while to figure it out. Sarah Kabat, director of
International and Executive Health Services, had not popped in –
at all. Not once. It was pretty much never that Kabat didn’t strut
into the shop – cell phone-affixed to her ear or chatting with a
co-worker or just by herself for what I assumed was her regular
caffeine fix – whenever I was there, regardless of the day or
time. Was she off caffeine? On some kind of health kick? Really
busy at work?
I knew something was up. I eventually found out – when she
popped in the following week -- that the coffee shop had nothing
