BSCBAA President’s Letter Upcoming Events Visit our website at: http:// www.theboykinspanielclub.com/ html/events.html Dear BSCBAA Members, As I write this, I glance out the window to see leaves turning colors and the change of the season upon us. It is that time of year when many of us enjoy our little brown dogs as they work in the fields retrieving and upland game hunting. It brings joy as I watch them work with such enthusiasm and heart. I have made plans this week for a duck hunting adventure in North Dakota with some Toller dog friends. I am sure, the Boykin Spaniel will show the Tollers how it is supposed to be done. Since my last letter several Club activities have occurred with much success and more activities are in the For upcoming AKC Events visits : http://www.akc.org/events/ index.cfm?nav_area=events Contact Information PO BOX 42 GILBERT, SC, 29054 Club Email: contact@TheBoykinSpanielClub.com Newsletter Email: news@TheBoykinSpanielClub.com Website: www.THEBOYKINSPANIELCLUB.com © 2012 The Boykin Spaniel Club and Breeders Association of America, Inc. 1 BSCBAA President’s Letter Continued planning stages. I know I have been out of the country for a while, but I was impressed. The HOWL-O-WEEN Fest was the finest, best organized, nicest, most well-attended dog event of its kind I have had the pleasure of participating in. Next year Ginger has already arranged to have Boykin Spaniel Rescue to be among the ten Rescue groups to receive a prorata share of the event donation proceeds. But, sure enough here I am and loving every minute of it. The first sport for me and our Boykin Spaniels is hunting. I love it and they love it. In fact, I hunt because of I have Boykins. For the hunting Boykin it requires skill, athleticism, intelligence, discipline and of course the payoff is reaping the spoils. As a former athlete myself, these are all the things I love. Also, to see and experience the joy that emulates from the dogs is nothing short of spectacular. Ever since I was introduced to the little brown dog about 15 years ago, I knew that they were meant for hunting, working, agility but never for prancing around a show ring. We enjoy our Boykins not only with hunting but also in dock diving, agility and we have even tried rally. The Boykin Spaniel can do and be whatever you want them to do or be. They are that GREAT! I always believe in the fact that the Boykin breed is so lovable and yet so smart they need a job in order to feel satisfied or complete. This is where I was going wrong in my thought process and thinking that the show ring was not a job and required no ability or energy or any of the things that I enjoy. All the miss-guided perceptions I had about the show ring have proven to be false. Surprisingly enough, I have experienced the show ring to be very much a challenge while providing lots of suspense and many little surprises along the way. This athlete as well as my little brown dogs have learned that it does in deed require skill, athleticism, intelligence and especially discipline. There are a few more elements that I have found to be true of performance in the show ring: one—the sharing and camaraderie of new friends and two—which is the most exciting to me is the competitiveness and thrill of success achieved through hard work. The show ring provides my Boykins with another avenue to pursue during the offseason of bird hunting. It keeps them focused and trained. It also gets very hot in Southeast Texas and the shows can give a little air conditioning pleasure during those scorching, hot days. I have several Boykins that get very excited when they know we are getting ready for a show. They experience the thrill and they love all the attention they receive. It provides special moments and endearing times for me and my Boykins. No, the show ring is not the first choice for me but it has grown to be close as it comes in second as my choice of a sports with my Boykins. 9 Paid Advertisement Home Of the First AKC Grand Champion Boykin Spaniel, First Westminster Boykin Spaniel Best of Opposite and Celebrating Ten Champions And Four Grand Champions! Oftentimes we forget about our little four-legged family members during the excitement and festivities. The American Kennel Club® (AKC) offers the following tips to keep your furry friends safe among the hustle and bustle this holiday season. Daily routines tend to change during the holidays. Maintain a feeding and walking schedule as close to your dog’s normal routine as possible. If you are interested in saving a Boykin, visit the Boykin Spaniel Rescue - link is below: http://www.boykinrescue.org/bsr/ Avoid feeding your dog table-scraps and sweets. Chocolate contains harmful, and sometimes fatal, chemicals to canines. Poultry bones can splinter and cause intestinal blockages. Avoid decorations with popcorn or cranberry strands or tinsel and glass ornaments. Keep small decorations out of your dog’s reach. When decorating with holiday lights, remember that exposed indoor or outdoor wiring could electrocute a curious canine that chews on it. Tape wires to the wall or sides of the house. Real Christmas trees pose numerous threats to dogs, so consider an artificial tree. If you do buy a natural tree then make sure your dog doesn’t swallow the pine needles. Dogs also find the tree water tempting, so be sure to use petfriendly preservatives in the water. Plants such as poinsettias, holly and mistletoe can be poisonous to pets and should be kept out of reach. Dispose of all wrapping paper, bows and ribbons as soon as presents are opened. Resist the urge to give your favorite dog lover a cute, cuddly puppy during the gift-giving season. Puppies are a lifetime responsibility requiring exercise, training, veterinary care and – most importantly – love and attention. Instead, consider gift wrapping dog toys or supplies such as a leash or food bowl to symbolize the gift of a dog to come. Additional tips on how to keep your dog safe during the holidays can be found on the AKC Website at www.akc.org. © The American Kennel Club, Inc. 13 AKC BOYKIN SPANIEL TITLES 2008—2009 COMPANION & PERFORMANCE 2008 Dog's Full Titled Name Carolina's Duck Duck Goose RN MX MXJ OAP OJP XF NFP Carolina's Duck Duck Goose RN MX MXJ OAP OJP XF NFP Carolina's Duck Duck Goose RN MX MXJ OAP OJP XF NFP Rock'N Creek Paco AX OAJ Rock'N Creek Paco AX OAJ Carolina's Victoria SH Nashville Minnie CDX RE AX MXJ OF THD J & L's Sweet Caroline SH Carolina's Cara AJP Nashville Minnie CDX RE AX MXJ OF THD Maggie's Northern Ruby SH Mostyn JH J&L's Super Chewbaka The Second JH J & L's Lucky Nellie Mae MH Carolina's Duck Duck Goose RN MX MXJ OAP OJP XF NFP Rock'N Creek Paco AX OAJ Pocotaligo Annie Of Cedar Grove SH Boulder Brook's Fireworks SH Carolina's Duck Duck Goose RN MX MXJ OAP OJP XF NFP Boulder Brook's Big Red JH Brandywine's Buffalo Baylee OA OAJ OF Brandywine's Buffalo Baylee OA OAJ OF Brandywine's Buffalo Baylee OA OAJ OF COMPANION & PERFORMANCE 2009 Dog's Full Titled Name Amanda Of Pocotaligo MH Pocotaligo's Shotgun Red MH Nashville Minnie CDX RE AX MXJ OF THD Goin' Incognito CD RE CH Sunseeker Kiss My Britches Beekauz RN MH CH Sc's Who's Wearn' The Pants Now RA Boulder Brook's Fireworks SH J & L's Saving Grace JH Sunseeker Feel The Heat RN CH Sc's Who's Wearn' The Pants Now RA Larry's Copper Penney CD RN NJP Nashville Minnie CDX RE AX MXJ OF THD Ceasarcreek Crown Charlie MH Jandls Brandy Dewey Dell SH Pocotaligo's Texas Willie JH Pocotaligo Annie Of Cedar Grove SH Carolina's Duck Duck Goose RN MX MXJ OAP OJP XF NFP Carolina's Cara AJP Brandywine's Buffalo Baylee OA OAJ OF CH Carolina's Cocoa Channel RN SH Pocotaligo's Finest Brandy MH Pocotaligo's Banjo JH CH Carolina's Cocoa Channel RN SH Pocotaligo's Cash Advance JH Sex M M M M M F F F F F F M M F M M F M M M F F F Sex F M F M M M M F M M F F M F M F M F F F F M F M Title AX NF AXJ OA OAJ SH OAJ SH NJP NF SH JH JH MH MXJ AX JH JH OF JH NA NAJ NF Title SH MH AXJ RE RN RN SH JH RN RA RN CDX MH JH JH SH XF OJP OF JH SH JH RN JH Date 1/27/2008 2/16/2008 2/17/2008 3/21/2008 4/5/2008 4/13/2008 5/4/2008 5/10/2008 7/13/2008 8/15/2008 8/23/2008 8/31/2008 9/6/2008 9/15/2008 9/26/2008 10/10/2008 10/11/2008 10/12/2008 10/19/2008 10/19/2008 10/25/2008 10/25/2008 11/29/2008 Date 2/8/2009 2/8/2009 2/28/2009 3/28/2009 3/28/2009 4/18/2009 5/9/2009 5/10/2009 6/20/2009 6/21/2009 6/28/2009 8/9/2009 9/6/2009 9/6/2009 9/26/2009 10/3/2009 10/9/2009 10/10/2009 10/25/2009 10/25/2009 11/7/2009 11/8/2009 11/22/2009 12/6/2009 Owner(s) Christine Prince Christine Prince Christine Prince LINDA SATTERFIELD/Kent Satterfield LINDA SATTERFIELD/Kent Satterfield Paul Pennell Herber Norckauer, Jr Stephen Thayer/Larry Hinchman Harold Stanlick/Paul H Pennell Herber Norckauer, Jr Larry Hinchman/Jan Hinchman Jon Andersen Mark Rieger/Noah Jolusod Larry Hinchman/Jan Hinchman Christine Prince LINDA SATTERFIELD/Kent Satterfield James Kinnear J William Wright III Christine Prince David Heath/Mary Heath Teresa Jackson/Steve Jackson Teresa Jackson/Steve Jackson Teresa Jackson/Steve Jackson Owner(s) Devon Ruth/Kim Parkman J Greg Hendrick/Kim Parkman Herber Norckauer, Jr Chirstine Rice Sharon Kauzlarich/DAN KAUZLARICH/Katie Kauzlarich Lindsay Plott/Kayla Heinz J William Wright III Nicholas Thayer Austina Heinz/Gina Plott Lindsay Plott/Kayla Heinz Lawrence Lynch Herber Norckauer, Jr Larry Hinchman/Jan Hinchman Mark Edwards Kim Parkman James Kinnear Christine Prince Harold Stanlick/Paul H Pennell Teresa Jackson/Steve Jackson Jacquelin De Angelo Jessica Braswell/Kim Parkman John Carlisle/Kim Parkman Jacquelin De Angelo Chad Funderburk/Kim Parkman 2010 AND 2011 TITLES WILL BE PUBLISHED NEXT ISSUE AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO PUBLISH ALL TITLES THROUGH TO PRESENT DATE The Boykin Spaniel Standard ISSUE 07 October, 2012 14 Baby Fisher staying warm on a cold day! Dogs that finish ranked in the top ten (plus ties) for their breed for the 2012 or 2013 qualifying years will be invited to compete in the competition. “AKC created the AKC National Owner-Handler Series as a pilot program in January to celebrate the dedication and enthusiasm of our ownerhandler exhibitors, and we’re very pleased with the support the program has gotten since it was opened to every All-Breed club this spring,” said AKC Director of Event Operations Bobby Birdsong. “Since the Series has existed for less than a full year, we’ve scheduled the year-end event for December 2013 to allow exhibitors extra chances for competition and time to qualify.” The qualifying period for the 2012 qualifying year is January 1, 2012 through October 10, 2012. The qualifying period for the 2013 qualifying year will be October 11, 2012 through October 9, 2013. Rankings are compiled based on the AKC Owner-Handler Series Point Schedule for Best of Breed, Group and Best in Show placements. The rankings are available on the AKC website. Once the results from the 2012 qualifying year have been processed, AKC will recognize the top 2012 dogs on a new webpage. The President, all 435 members of the US House of Representatives, 33 of the 100 US Senators, 11 state governors, and approximately 6,015 state legislators will be elected on this date. Thousands more will be elected to city, county and municipal offices. These elected officials will have tremendous influence on the direction of animal laws during their terms. Therefore, it is essential for all responsible dog owners, exhibitors, and breeders to be informed and active during the campaign season and to vote. AKC Government Relations (AKC GR) provides a flyer with this message for distribution at club meetings, dog shows, and anywhere dog lovers gather. Simply stated, this election day your right to own and breed a dog could hang in the balance. AKC GR's one-page printable flyer emphasizes this message and the importance of supporting dog and breeder-friendly candidates in the upcoming elections. In addition to distributing the flyer, there are other steps you can take over the next several days to support the election of candidates who respect the rights of dog owners and breeders. An important first step is to research candidates' views on canine legislation. Click here to review "Ideas for Identifying and Supporting Dog Friendly Candidates" from the July 2012 issue of Taking Command. Share what you learn about candidates with your colleagues, club members, and fellow dog owners so they also can make informed choices at the ballot box. Although dog issues are not a common part of a candidate's campaign platform; once elected, policymakers will likely encounter these issues. Please refer to the AKC GR Toolbox for printable resources to help educate candidates and elected officials about the value and importance of supporting responsible dog ownership, breeding, and exhibition.
