The State Fair is over and it is now time to look forward to the holidays with family and a new year. We have been busy at the Dallas Genealogical Society as we have passed new bylaws, new dues, and the nominating committee has been fast at work with a slate of new officers. These will be presented to the Society on November 14th at the general meeting for consideration and a vote of approval. December 3rd will be our awards program for this year, from 6 to 8 pm on the 7th floor of the Dallas Public Library in the O-Hare Room. Cost will be $8.00 for the evening. This will be not a dinner, but heavy hors d’oeuvres will be served. The fiche project for the USA is coming to completion; Shirley Sloat has done a wonderful job with this. The fiche project volunteers are being recognized on November 14th at the general meeting with a reception afterwards. We also will be honoring Lloyd with his years of work at the Dallas Public Library. I have been very honored and humbled to serve you during the last two years as President. I wish the best in the future for the Society and its future leadership. DGS lifetime member, Lalla Faye “Randi” Brown Smith died on Wednesday, August 26, 2009. Randi was very active at DGS and will be missed by many. In addition to being a lifetime member of our society, Randi was also a member of the San Jacinto Descendants; The Jane Douglas Chapter of U.S. Daughters of the American Revolution; The John Cavet Chapter U.S. Daughters of the War of 1812; and Chapter No. 6 of the Daughters of the Confederacy. She was also the past president of the James Bonham Chapter, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, and served at the state level of the D.R.T. on the historical committee. She was also a member of Scofield Memorial Church and in the Primetimers Club. DGS Membership Dues Increase At the October 24th DGS General Meeting, the amendment to increase membership dues passed. This increase will begin on January 1, 2010. You can renew early at the current rate, for as many years as you would like, either on the website, or by mail. DGS must receive your renewal, by December 31, 2009. Dallas Genealogical Society / September - October 2009 / Volume 34/ Number 6 Page 90 Dallas Genealogical Society Newsletter Cartographic Records By Lloyd deWitt Brockstuck Cartographic records are an important tool for genealogical research. These may be individual map sheets or atlases. Gregory A. Boyd has been producing a series of volumes on family maps for individual counties in the public domain, i.e. those states other than the thirteen original colonies and the states carved out of them (Vermont, Maine, West Virginia, Tennessee, and Kentucky), plus Texas, and Hawaii. The volumes, which he has produced, show the names of the first original owners of federal lands, and the names of adjoining property owners. In Boyd’s series, if the property owners purchased their land from the federal government at the same time, they knew each other. There is not, however, any guarantee that the geographical propinquity was at a given point of time. Maps reflecting the neighborhood at the time one’s ancestors reside in the county are much more desirable to enable the researchers to pinpoint on the surface of the earth exactly where an ancestor was located. Roads, waterways, cemeteries and other features may yield important clues for further investigation. With a contribution from Dr. Donald Holcomb, the Dallas Genealogical Society has gifted the Genealogy Section of the Dallas Public Library with a major cartographic research tool contained on microfiche. One of the largest map collections in the United States is located in the Cartographic Division of the Library of Congress. Among the most significant groups of records in this collection are the Nineteenth century land ownership maps. These maps enable genealogists to trace their ancestry. In 1967 Richard Stephenson’s Land Ownership Maps: A Checklist of Nineteenth Century United States County Maps in the Library of Congress, (R016.91273/L697L/1977) appeared. Therein are listed 1,449 of these county maps pertaining to 1,041 different counties. These are concentrated in the northeastern and the north central states as well as Virginia, Texas, and California. The maps cover nearly a third of the adjacent forty-eight states. Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, and Wyoming are the only states not represented. Only seven percent of the county maps were made by 1840. A quarter of the maps were published between 1841 and the outbreak of the Civil War and involve the states of Virginia and Pennsylvania, where the movements of armies were dependent on knowing the lay of the land. All of the counties in the Northeastern states (Massachusetts, Maine, New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maryland, and Virginia), and significant parts of Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin before 1860 are featured. In the South, 327 maps of counties fronting on the Mississippi River show plantations between 1851 and 1860. Between 1861 and 1880 the county maps being prepared lay in Virginia, Texas, Pennsylvania, and the North Central States. In the Lone Star State, the General Land Office initiated an extensive mapping program in 1879. About 21% of all the maps made between 1881 and 1900 are for Texas. Few of the counties in the western part of the country had land ownership maps issued. Land Ownership Maps is arranged alphabetically by state and thereunder by county. If a county has had more than one map of land owners published, the maps are identified by date and listed from the oldest to the most recent. Middlesex County, New Jersey, for example, has maps for 1766, 1850, and 1851; Bucks County, Pennsylvania for 1817, and 1850. There is an 1864 map of Isle of Wight County, Virginia, with a portion of Nansemond County included. For Dallas County, Texas, there are maps for 1884, 1886, and 1900. Collin County has one for 1881. The number of microfiche for each map ranges from one to six. To determine which counties, and what years of coverage are offered, visit KinQuest.com, or the Family History Library catalogue at Familysearch.org. What will that mean to you? It will mean more dollars of your membership dues can go towards new acquisitions and defraying the cost of other events. It will also mean you will receive the newsletter in a more timely manner. Mailing bulk mail can take up to 3 weeks from the time the newsletter is mailed to the time it’s in your mailbox. Over the last few years the newsletter has become very costly to produce. The printing cost runs about $1,000 per issue. Add to that the cost of the paper, and mailing. We have been very fortunate to have Rose Blatch as our Director of Mailing. She has spent many hours folding, and tabbing the 800+ issues that are mailed out, significantly reducing the cost of postage. A letter will be mailed out in December. If you do not have a computer, and wish to continue to receive the newsletter via the post office there will be a form for you to fill out and mail back to DGS requesting a paper version.
