Airfield Lighting Control System ALCS Style 2 ALCS Style 3 Reference to Standards ICAO: Annex 14, Volume I, current edition Aerodrome Design Manual, Part 5 FAA: AC 150/5345-56 (current edition) L-890 Airfield Lighting Control and Monitoring System (ALCMS) Advisory Circular (AC) Military: UFC 3-535-01 STANAG 3316 IEC: 62143 Fig. 1: ATC (Tower) and Maintenance (Substation) workstation ADB’s Airfield Lighting Control System (ALCS) family ranges from Style 1 to Style 7, enabling selection and specific adaptation of Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) control features for all sizes and levels of complexity of airfield ground lighting systems. Application of ALCS Style 2 and 3 Airfield Lighting Control Systems from ADB enable the air traffic controller to operate the entire lighting system via easy-to-use touch screen monitors. Operational features, system status and fault messages are clearly visualized in well structured masks on the controller HMI in the tower and maintenance HMI in the substation. While the controller work station is focused on the operational status of airfield ground lights, the maintenance station monitors the actual status and error messages of the electrical components, constant current regulators and system interfaces. ALCS Style 2 and 3 are state of the art systems for easy and straight forward control and monitoring of visual aids, tailored to the needs of airports with one or two runways and maximum 32 (Style 2) or 56 (Style 3) airfield lighting circuits (typical: approach, threshold until end of runway, PAPI, taxiways and stopbars). ALCS Style 2 is used for airports with one (1) airfield lighting substation, while Style 3 is used for airports with two (2) substations to power the visual aids. ALCS Style 2 and 3 feature a serial RS 485 Jbus communication interface (2A, 3A) or a multiwire cable connection (2B, 3B) to constant current regulators (CCR) and serve up to 10 digital I/O’s per substation. Both versions of the system have a modular design in hardware and software, allowing extensions by adding additional user interfaces in AGL substations. This facilitates modifications for future airport growth and upgrades.
