CHARLESTONSHAGCLUB.COM Thanks again to Gordon Hanson and Henry Hicks for completing two very nice projects. Gordon, the Photo Directory and Henry, the Personalized Tervis Tumbler order. We appreciate the success of both of these. We have had many complementary comments on both. We have a Photo Directory for each member, if you have not gotten yours by August 5th,we will have them at the meeting. Our beach party with the Islanders was a resounding success. We had perfect weather and about 60 members of the clubs. Delicious food and fun in the sun. The prevailing comment was "we gotta do this again this summer". Lets plan on it. The 60's party was great. Thank you Henry and Janice Hicks, Tug and Betty Mathisen for being great hosts and to Walter for doing the DJ honors. It is great when so many of us dress up in spectacular clothes, wigs, bandanas and tie dyed t-shirts and are met at the door by Tug's "Lovebug" van. I know Harriett was happy to have a packed house too. GeeChee Blast is coming on fast. If you are volunteering and want to get your discounted ticket you need to buy tickets soon. See the flyer inside for details on ordering tickets and spread the word to others about this party. It is our premier event and there is a job for almost everyone, join in on the fun. The Charleston Beach Music and Shag Festival will be here soon. It is August 23-26 with many bands and events associated with it. Our social planned for August 24, has been cancelled in favor of that being a band night with Betty Brown DJing at Pivots. This is a good time for us to get behind this event and have some fun. This whole festival is being partially sponsored by Pivots. Last month I told you that Nancy Strother was representing us in making a bid to host the ACSC workshop in July of '09. We were well represented but Jacksonville Fla. won the bid. We can try again another time. Don't forget the Shag-A-Thon to benefit Hospice. Come out to Northwoods Mall on August 11th. Dance, make a contribution and have some fun for a good cause. This is being put together with the help of Nancy and Pivots. Please continue to bring your great food ideas to our meeting. The food you bring has become the high point of the night. Thanks. The CBS Early Show came to Charleston on July 20th. They showcased Charleston to the rest of the country for two hours from 7-9 AM. They did a good job of planning and showed many of the things we love about the lowcountry, including a nice segment on the shag. Ellen Tayor gave the weatherman a short lesson before she and number of members of CSC showed the country some nice moves to "I Love Beach Music". There were six or seven adult couples from our club and some juniors. They were a really nice addition to the program. Thank you for getting up so early and looking so good. Remember the 70's party, Jeff Denison is our host and Walter is DJing at Pivots on July27. Steve 2007EVENTS CALENDAR CSC Shag Related Calendar for 2007 (Subject to change as the year progresses.) We have $3307.00 in our checking account and $14,097.00 in the money market account GeeChee Blast expenditures so far are $1,128.60 and income $3,385.00 so far. Membership: Steve asked Elmyra Upchurch, our new Membership Chair, to update us on the new members. We have 248 members. Elmyra said we have not had much change in the last month. She is thinking of going to Pivots on Tuesday night when they have a large crowd for lessons and setting up a table to encourage people to join. Everyone thought that would be great. Elmyra asked for helping in keeping membership applications at Pivots. We have run out recently. Just let her know if you see that they are low. Steve said he takes some over too, but we keep running out. Sunshine Report: Steve asked if anyone had any news. He said that Claude Robertson’s mother passed away last week. . Geechee Blast: Polly Bulman gave an update.on tickets sold (18) – mostly to out of towners. She said Elmyra has completed work on the trifold so she will send those out to the people who have purchased tickets There will be a committee chairperson meeting this month. Jim Carter has decided to cook the Boston Butts on site that Saturday and he will have a committee to help. If you work for 2 hours during the party your ticket is $35 instead of $50. Members need to get your tickets now. Beach Party :Steve said that we have a beach party with the Islanders planned for Saturday July 7. Clubs are furnishing chicken. You bring a dish and whatever you need for the day (chairs, etc).We will be on the back side of Kiawah and will have a ferry from 10-12 to take anyone who wants to go. Steve asked for volunteers to help ferry: Ralph Waters, Bobby Weaver, Steve so far are volunteering. Steve said he would make some calls too. Social – July social is a 70’s theme to follow two great parties for the 50’s (April) and 60’s (June). Jeff Denison said he wants to decorate and have some surprises. He may need help to get Pivots decorated. Dig out your best 70’s clothes and come ready to party. Steve congratulated Gordon Hanson on a super job on the pictoral directory. He has a copy for everyone so be sure to see him if you have not picked up your copy. Steve said that Henry is ready to order send off the Tervis tumbler order. Betty Mathisen said that she is collecting money from everyone who has not paid, so please see her after the meeting. Steve asked everyone to check out the samples of polo shirts with club logo that are on the front table. We can order a variety of items and the shirts are quality. There is a price list. Please complete the order form. The Board voted to have a sample made up to see if anyone wanted a polo shirt or other items with the club logo. Summer Workshop 2009 – The Board discussed and decided that our club would bid on the workshop for 2009. This is a great way to showcase the club and Charleston. Since every club must send a representative and there are 300 clubs, we should have nice attendance. Nancy Strother is going to make our bid this weekend at the summer workshop in Augusta. Nancy was chair of the successful winter workshop this year for the Islanders Club and she has agreed to chair the event if we win the bid. It will be a lot of fun to pull off but we will need everyone’s help. Nancy said the Shrine Temple has that date open in 2009 and the hotels are estimating their cost. The only thing so far is that the summer rates are going to be a lot higher than winter rates were, so that may be a concern. Nancy said that Lynn Cooper has volunteered to write another grant through the Arts Commission and she is going to check with the Charleston Visitors Center to see if they have any money to help defray the costs. We will know by the next meeting if we won the bid. Social for August has been cancelled because of a conflict with the Charleston Beach Music and Shag Festival. There will be a band at Pivots that night and we will all be helping out with the event. Dot Smith said that Thursday and Friday nights would be at Pivots and Saturday and Sunday until 9 pm are at the Maritime Center. After 9 pm, Pivots will be open for the party to move there. The change from the Fairgrounds to the Maritime Center is a nice one since the facilities are nicer. Volunteers get free tickets Nancy Strother talked about the Shag a Thon for Hospice to be held August 11 at Northwoods Mall. They have already received $1300 in pledges and she needs dancers and sponsors. Time 12-5 pm at Northwoods Mall. Split the Kitty $55 to the winner – won by Jim Carter, $55 to Camp Happy Days Food for the August meeting - Jeff asked for suggestions to go with fried chicken. Everyone wanted to do salads. The ham and the vegetables tonight were great. The meeting adjourned at 6:30 followed by dancing.
