PRESIDENT’S LETTER:

volunteered this year, but will simply thank every one of you who is
serving in any capacity for our state and local associations. It was an
encouragement to me to see some committees with several members, as
it is often difficult to fill all the spots. Your contributions are important
and make LSPG a force to be admired. We have so many reasons to be
thankful!
I hope you all enjoyed Reid Sherard's presentation on child abduction
claims under the Hague Convention at our May meeting. In June we will
hear from Jon Hammond on Clinton's impeachment trial, followed by
our state officer visit in July, and Tom Griffin of the Secret Service in
August. Program Chair Katie Johnson has a great line up of speakers for
this coming year, and we hope that you don't miss a one.
Let me encourage you to consider attending the NALS Educational
Conference in October. The conference is in Atlanta this year, close
enough to drive, so it's an excellent opportunity to attend a national
meeting without the expense of an airline ticket. Also, LSPG will
reimburse attendees' registration costs on a pro rata basis. If you have
never been to a national conference but always wondered what all the
fuss was about, this is your time!
At last –Spring/Summer finally arrived in all her splendor, although we
were having our doubts. As overnight temperatures dipped into the 30s
just last week in our little corner of the world, it's hard to believe it is late
May in South Carolina. Sometimes our lives and careers can be just as
unbelievable. If you ever feel that your career is at a standstill or that
you just need a new challenge, LSPG and our tri-level association can be
your answer to that ennui. With certifications, seminars, speakers,
networking, marketing, friendship, and travel opportunities, LSPG is a
natural fit for kickstarting our interests and fulfilling the need for growth
both in our personal lives and our professions.
To recap since our last LINKS, new officers have been elected and
installed (Patti Bacon became a "PPP"- past president/parliamentarian upon her return from Down Under); and our organization has been
energized by the addition of new names and faces in LSPG and its
Board. We welcome Dee Dee Callison's debut in the officer line as Vice
President, new member/committee member Michelle Dender, and new
committee chairs Jo Anne Gregory and Debbie Stout. Many of you have
served before, but are branching out in new directions this year. In
addition, our chapter is the home of four LSPSC officers, including
President Lois Belle, PLS; FD Marketing Camilla Pitman, CMC, PLS;
Secretary Tara Brown, PP, PLS; and Treasurer Jimi Bullard, ALS. I
wish time and space permitted me to name each person who has

NALS AWARD OF EXCELLENCE
During the Membership Meeting held on Wednesday, April 17, Lois J. Belle, Certified PLS, was awarded the Award of
Excellence for her contributions and dedication to Legal Staff Professionals of Greenville.
Lois joined LSPG in 2000 and immediately became active in the organization. During her tenure, she has served as
chairman for numerous committees including the Fashion Show Fundraiser Committee, Annual Meeting Committee,
Sunshine Committee, Finance Committee, and Greeter Committee. In 2001, Lois was appointed Vice President of
Membership and in 2002 she was appointed as President for a two year term. Lois accepted the position of President
again in 2006 serving a one year term.
Lois’s service shifted to the state chapter, Legal Staff Professionals of South Carolina, in 2006 when she was elected to
the position of Secretary. After two years as Secretary, Lois continued to stay involved in LSPSC serving as Functional
Director of Certification, Functional Director of Membership, and President-Elect. On April 27, Lois was installed as
th
LSPSC President during the 48 Annual Meeting and Educational Conference in Spartanburg.
Congratulations to Lois on her commitment and achievements to LSPG and LSPSC.
Qualifications for nominating a member for the Award of Excellence includes: (1) must be a member of the tri-level
association; (2) must be active in the legal profession in accordance with the By-Laws and Standing Rules of LSPG; and
(3) must have a minimum of three year service to a local chartered chapter, LSPSC, or NALS. For more information or to

LSPG is excited to partner with Serenity Place for our 2013 Charity! Serenity Place is a
residential treatment center for pregnant women, young mothers and their preschool-age
children. Each year, about 120 mothers and children find hope, healing and transformation
in the program, with each family living on-site for four to six months. Up to 48 women and
children are in treatment at Serenity Place at any given time.
When a young mother and her children enter Serenity Place, the family has already been
down a long and dangerous road. The mother is struggling with addiction, and without
help, she is just about to lose her children to the foster care system...possibly forever. She's
also likely to be escaping from sexual abuse. For every five young mothers that come to
Serenity Place, four have been sexually abused, and this abuse often plays a role in the
onset
of
the
mother's
addiction.
The children have suffered through no fault of their own, and often come to us traumatized
and confused. Their daily lives have veered from chaos to deadening neglect, without rhyme
or reason. They are often delayed on several developmental levels and emotionally unable
to connect. Without help, they will be unprepared for any kind of classroom environment.
Serenity Place provides an outstanding clinical program with a staff that works 24/7
towards three objectives for all client families: healing the mother's addiction, accelerate the
child's development, and building long term skills for family strength and self sufficiency.

As a paralegal, you are required to adhere to a code of legal ethics.
Here are some tips to help you comply:

You Are Not an Attorney
Do not decide to take a case or set fees. Make sure to inform clients that you are a paralegal and not an
attorney.

You Cannot Sign Pleadings
Only attorneys can sign pleadings. If you sign letters, make sure to clearly identify yourself as a paralegal.

You Cannot Conduct Depositions
You cannot depose witnesses or represent deponents. You may, however, attend depositions, prepare
deposition questions and later abstract the transcripts.

You Cannot Represent Clients in a Court of Law
Only attorneys can represent clients at hearings and trials. You may help your attorney by assembling
hearing and trial notebooks, pre-marking exhibits, and preparing witness schedules.

You Cannot Give Legal Advice
Do not interpret statutes, laws and rules or render an opinion. Also, do not suggest to clients a course of
action to take and/or predict possible outcomes and scenarios.

You Should Build an Ethical Wall
If you are moving to a new firm, review the case list with your new boss to determine if there are any
potential conflicts. Also, make sure to tell your attorney if you are related to or friends with a client or
someone involved in a case.

and family law firm in West Palm Beach, Florida, and has over 20 years of experience. Ms. Weissberger earned a
B.S. degree, cum laude, from Temple University and graduated magna cum laude from Florida Atlantic University
in paralegal studies. In 2009, she became a Florida Registered Paralegal (FRP) with The Florida Bar. Ms.
Weissberger is a member of The Florida Bar (Family Law Section; Family Law CLE and Litigation Support
Committees); Palm Beach County Bar Association (Family Law CLE; Solo Practitioner and Small Law Firm
Committees); and the Paralegal Association of Florida, Inc. She actively promotes continuing education program for
Florida family law paralegal and attorneys with The Florida Bar and the Palm Beach County Bar Association, and

Calling All Students . . .
Did you know that effective immediately, NALS will be offering a one-year FREE membership to
students of approved legal studies and paralegal studies programs who have registered to take the ALS or
PP certification exam? In an effort to recruit new members, NALS has changed its eligibility
requirements to sit for the PP exam. Students of an approved paralegal studies program who are nearing
graduation will now be eligible to sit for the PP exam, provided their instructor signs off on a graduation
a package of affidavit.
