Released November 10, 2008, this CD features the best of the music recorded live from the band’s 2007 tour, including segments from a performance at a Synagogue in Greenbelt, MD and a show at Strathmore Hall, Bethesda, MD.
The name of the CD is Unexpected Joy Live In Concert with Ramon Tasat. Explaining this title, the band caught up
with Ramon somewhat unexpectedly in preparation for a different show earlier in 2007. Having so much fun playing
together at that event, we decided that we would try to find additional opportunities to collaborate. Hence the creation of this concert series. This CD represents the best of the music from this series.
Brian Choper, the band’s manager explains, “The concert series was a lot of fun, and this CD is a lot of fun as well, as
it features the best of our live shows; slower cantorial Ladino music, and contrasts it with the higher energy of fast,
traditional Klezmer.” This recording is excellent. It includes a lively mix of Klezmer, Ladino, and Swing Jazz.
This CD has been given impressive reviews and has received acclaim as a feature on many music and cultural radio
shows, including the Estelle Abraham radio program, “Jewish Community Radio”, AM Radio 1120 WUST, and the very
well-known and iconic music show “Traditions” with Mary Cliff, 88.5 FM WAMU Radio.

About NKQ
WEC Introduces The New Klezmer Quintet ! Rock With This New Alternative Klezmer/World Music Band With a Twist!
You’ve Got To Hear Their Unique Sound!
The New Klezmer Quintet includes fiddle, clarinet, guitar, keys, bass, drums and vocalist -- a 7-pc World Klezmer music band that plays both covers and original music. However, when we play covers, we don’t sound like every other
Klezmer band. We don’t try to be like everyone else, because we’re not! Rather, we arrange the music to fit our own
character and style, stamping our own distinctive sound on the tune, keeping each song sounding fresh and different.
When we write our own material, we intentionally blend
elements of funk, rock, fusion, jazz, World, Klezmer and
Bluegrass into one, creating a sound like no other band
around. You see, we love Klezmer and World music, but
we love Bluegrass and Rock & Roll just as much. Put them
all together, and you get a crazy, fun, upbeat and modern
sound like no other. It’s the sound of the NKQ, and it
rocks down the house. Just listen to our rendition of the
“Orange Blossom Special”!
The New Klezmer Quintet is not about tradition….but about combining traditions! Their goal is to bring all influences
together to create an entirely new and modern approach to the music, from the melodies to the rhythms, and including the lyrics. The band shares stories, tidbits of history and humor with the audience while interacting with them as
the band introduces each piece. Throwing Jazz, Rock, Fusion and Bluegrass into the mix demonstrates the similarities
between European music and American Rock and Jazz.
They want everyone to have a really great time -an experience they will not forget- one that will make the show not
only memorable, but just great fun!

Concerts and Festival Performances
“I would like to thank the members of the NKQ for this phenomenal concert. The music selection was very exciting and renewed many happy memories of Klezmer music. The group’s professional skills are incredible. The introductions shared the humor and the love of the music you presented to us. I would give the highest recommendation to all who are considering engaging your group for a performance or
special event. It is indeed one of the most enjoyable groups I have ever heard perform. Keep up the wonderful music!”
Dianne Boyer, Silver Spring, MD
“I wanted to let you know how we totally loved the music. The proof is that everyone was dancing nonstop -- even those who we feared
might not! We were aiming for an atmosphere of elegance and freilach, and you helped us achieve both.”
Sharon Siedel, Baltimore, MD
“I wanted you to know that we really enjoyed the concert. People are still talking about how wonderful it was. Thanks again for what you
did.”
Angie Carmel, Beltsville, MD
“Your band was excellent! You played a variety of music, all extremely well. Not your ordinary Klezmer band. I will be referring you.”

“I am the Publicity Chairman and a Member of the Ways and Means Committee at Mishkan Torah Synagogue in Greenbelt, Maryland
and I am principally in charge of our performing arts activities. I have had the great pleasure and honor to work with and present the New
Klezmer Quintet (“NKQ”). I can tell you that this band is a group of tremendous performers. They are all top-flight professional musicians
who put on a show that will leave your audiences asking for more!
Mishkan Torah has sponsored four appearances by this band in years past. In 2007, Mishkan Torah found itself with a roof that would leak
during any rainstorm. The NKQ gave a special performance to kick off fund raising activity which resulted in the Synagogue receiving a new
roof. It was only appropriate that they returned to the Mishkan Torah stage on March 9. 2013 to give a concert to celebrate finally paying off
the roof.
A concert by this band is a gala event. The NKQ is thoroughly grounded in, and highly skilled at playing, the traditional Klezmer music of Jewish Eastern Europe, as well as standard Jewish and Israeli folk songs. However, the NKQ has gone way beyond the traditional Klezmer music
by incorporating elements of jazz, rock, and bluegrass, creating a unique Klezmer fusion sound. The NKQ’s signature version of “The Orange
Blossom Special” brings down the house!
A concert by the NKQ literally has the audiences dancing in the aisles. It is music which at our concerts literally appealed to all ages, from
the youngest children to a contingent from a neighborhood senior citizen’s facility. It is literally impossible to sit still when they perform.
If you are looking for infectious music, superb musicianship that everyone will love, and top-notch showmanship, look no further than the
NKQ!”
