We are now well within the 2013 ski season and the snow is supreme. Mammoth has a most excellent snowpack, so high that you need to walk uphill when exiting the gondola hut at the top of the mountain. On the January trip, Lisa and I reunited after a one season break and dropped off a very skiable Climax. No rocks, yea! The snow under Chair 3 was really good too. Herb must have done 30,000 or 40,000 feet of vertical—he was really tearing up the mountain. [He was up there all week and Doug does need to recalibrate his totalizer.] Sarah was amazing– after a lesson on Saturday—she was ready and willing to ski with the group. She can ski with us anytime! Quite a few of us will be on the Super Trip to Aspen/ Snowmass in early February. The word is out all over LA Council that Aerospace is going to mop it up—we are a very strong contingent of racers. Maybe we’ll even see Teeda out for some hardware. Three more Mammoth bus trips to go—sign up early and often. The club can’t afford to have any empty seats. After last season’s face plant, we need to dig ourselves out. Please, please spread the word about our ski club trip. According to Miles, we are the only “real” ski club in Los Angeles—and I think he’s right. Do not take for granted that the club will always be able to run 4-5 bus trips to Mammoth each season. We neeed a continuous, steady flow of new members and guests to keep our speed up the ups and downs of the mountain. We cozied up by the fire at Saint Rocke for the January TGIF and enjoyed their $5 Happy Hour Menu. The next TGIF will be Friday, February 18 at Pancho’s Mexican Restaurant in Manhattan Beach (3615 Highland Ave., at Rosecrans Ave.). Enjoy drink specials and half-off most appetizers while we hear stories of those who have just returned from the Aspen Super Trip and plan for the following weekend’s Mammoth trip. Valet parking at the restaurant or metered parking garage across the street. Note thet this will be the last TGIF before April. Deb Lisa’s Stuff Ski News OUR FIRST TRIP TO MAMMOTH was amazing. You couldn’t hope for better conditions...well unless you’re not a fan of the cold. Brrrr, was it cold (-8 in the AM)...but well worth it. Sunny skies, no wind, great snow conditions...just awesome. If you were skiing anywhere near me I’m sure you heard a hoot or two. The bad thing about the cold was that some of the buses froze overnight...including ours...however, Miles, who is brilliant, figured out a way to get it started only putting us 10 minutes behind schedule. A little ether did the trick. I definitely think the star of the weekend was Sara Sult...she was skiing with the big boys and keeping up. Why turn? I think she may have gotten some private lessons from Glen Brewer. Oh, and Miss Deb Eskra looked great skiing down lower dry creek which was a little bumped out. She said she was faking it for the camera and completely out of control. None of us believed her. All in all, it was a great weekend with friends, some new faces, and beautiful views of the minarets. Out February 22 nd trip is nearly sold out. Only a couple of spots left. Please contact me if you haven’t paid yet and are interested in coming. If we do sell out and get 7 people on the waiting list, I possibly can add another condo. We do have plenty of spots for both March trips...Mammoth is the place to be this winter, join us for a weekend of fun. See you after the Aspen/Snowmass trip. I can’t wait.
