A special series that takes
a closer look at how our
community is responding
to the literacy challenge.
he Chilliwack Cross-Sector
Training Project got underway
in the summer of 2008.
CLCS Workplace Essential Skills
Coordinator Michael Berger has
been meeting with local companies
to gain support and interest in creating a network of businesses who
wish to provide and sustain literacy
and skill training in the workforce.
Working in partnership with many
agencies such as the Chilliwack
Chamber of Commerce, CEPCO, Sto:
lo Nation, School District #33, local
employment agencies, University
of the Fraser Valley, and others, the
project aims to increase the number
Community
and types of training opportunities
available to employees.
Businesses are encouraged to
partner with the CLCS by co-designing the training to ensure it is relevant and specific to local businesses.
Participation by Chilliwack companies will ensure this home-grown
program succeeds.
It’s designed to meet the growing and changing learning needs
of businesses and employees specifically in Chilliwack. Interested
companies will form a network of
businesses ensuring their employees have literacy and skill training
made available to them.
THE SERIES AHEAD

One way that businesses can
take part is by offering their workplace documents (forms, manuals,
reports, etc.) to the CLCS to use in
training classes. Other ways include
donating meeting or training space,
or use of workplace computers.
The next steps include profiling
local businesses to determine the
types and levels of Essential Skills
training their employees need. This
information will form the basis for the
training programs that are created.
Concurrently, Berger is recruiting potential literacy tutors to
help mentor and tutor adults in
the workplace. While some of the
tutors are retired business people,
there are also openings for currently
employed people who wish to help a
co-worker.
