Pets Are For Life
Nothing upsets us more than people who discard their pets and drop them
off at shelters because they are either old or sick, or something better has
come along.
A pet is for life - no excuses.
I so long for a world where pet owners commit to their pets the way their
pets commit to them...In sickness and in health.
If you are ready for a lifetime commitment, and are considering getting a
pet, please remember to always ADOPT, and never buy. There are literally
thousands of cats and dogs right now that are in shelters and with rescue
groups that are in need of good loving homes. Whether you want a certain
size pet or breed, all can be found. All you have to do is check out
www.petfinders.com and you will see every breed and every size available.
Is there room in your home and your heart for another little one? If you
can care for even one, please consider getting yourself a best friend and
loyal companion who will bring much JOY to your life. It’s a privilege.
We acknowledge the financial support of the
Government of Canada through the Canada Periodical
Fund of the Department of Canadian Heritage.

OBITUARY
Kennedy, Freeway.
July 2,1997- February 5, 2012
We are heartbroken to announce that Freeway Kennedy passed away peacefully at
home surrounded by his family in Palm Springs California on February 5, 2012. His
long, difficult, and most unfair battle with Cushing’s disease has ended. He succumbed
to CHF (congestive heart failure). Missing him is his mom Leslie, his brother Jazz, his
family on Cortes Island, France, and Little Red, and his girlfriend Susy Q. He is predeceased by his K9 friends Dragon, Jimi, Harold, Lucy, Mikey, Molly, Otis, Peewee,
Zak, Casey and Ruby, as well as his favorite human friend Sam.
Freeway had a large contingent of family members and friends who loved him dearly
and will mourn his loss. He was a warm, giving and spiritual little guy. If you wanted
to talk, laugh, sing or enjoy friendship he was there. If you wanted to be quiet or were
sad, he was there. He knew how to brighten any day and even in the end you could tell
he was always more concerned about others than himself. With his last bit of strength
he still gave us all kisses. He loved to travel, and loved being in the truck. His favorite
activity was having the window open with the wind blowing in his face. Most of all
he just loved being with his family. It didn’t matter what we did as long as we were all
together 24 X 7.
The family wishes to Thank Julie Anne Lee, Dr. David Ruish, and Dr. Peter Dobias for
helping to extend his life, and for ensuring he had a good quality of life despite having
many health related issues. Freeway was the inspiration and the reason for BC’s Pet
Connection magazine.
To remember Freeway, share a hug with your beloved companions and cheerfully greet
an animal walking by. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made in Freeway’s name to

Freeway was born on July 2,1997 in White Rock, BC. He moved to Burnaby 8 weeks
later where he lived for 6 years before moving to Vancouver. Although we always thought
he was a city slicker, we discovered later in his life that he truly was a country bumpkin.
He came to cherish his time in the country running free, and digging up the land.

of his life.
If your pet is on

remember
Freeway and

Freeway was given
vaccinations he did not
need by conventional
veterinarians.
We don’t need scientific proof
or endless studies to show us
that vaccinations and processed
food are NOT the way to health
and wellness. Freeway was the
living proof.
Freeway went on to live
almost 9 more years with
Cushings Disease which
is unheard of. He also
lived over 2 years with
Congestive Heart Failure. Freeway was fed veterinarian recommended crap
food available for sale in
their clinics.
When Freeway was diagnosed with Cushings
Disease in 2003, by these same conventional
vets that made him sick in the first place,
and who now recommended toxic drugs, we
jumped off that treadmill and took his health
and his life into our own hands.
We stopped all
vaccinations, all drug
use, removed all toxic
items and started
feeding him real fresh
food and used
Homeopathic

to treat him.

Freeway’s Last Will and Testament
Before humans die they write their Last Will and
Testament, they give their home and all they have to
those they leave behind. If, with my paws, I could do
the same, this is what I’d ask.
To a poor and lonely stray I’d give:
- My happy home.
- My bowl and cosy bed, soft pillows
and all my toys.
raw pet food
Let us help you feed your
cat and dog the way
Nature intended. We stock
wholesome, natural raw
pet food from respected
industry suppliers.
- The lap, which I loved so much.
- The hand that stroked my fur and the sweet
voice which spoke my name.
So, when I die, please do not say, “I will never
have a pet again, for the loss and pain is more
than I can stand.”
Instead, go find an unloved dog, one whose life has
held no joy or hope and give MY place to HIM.
That is the only thing I can give...
The love I left behind.

RAPS, A True no kill shelter
O
By Carol Reichert, Executive Director
ver two decades have passed since the Richmond Animal Protection Society (formerly
Richmond Homeless Cats) began rescuing,
spaying, neutering and sheltering animals. RAPS’ founders were aggressive in dealing with the huge pet overpopulation problem and grasped that the only way to
successfully become a NOKILL community would
be through a radical spay,
neuter program. Trapping
sites were set up all over
Richmond and volunteers
would often trap 10 cats in
a single evening. During
one record-breaking week,
a total of 44 cats were
taken off the streets of
Richmond and given the
care they needed. PET CONNECTION •April - MAY 2012
During the first 10 years, our work was carried out from
a private residence and thousands of cats were trapped,
altered and adopted to safe and loving homes. Volunteers
took wild kittens into their homes and spent months
taming the terrified little creatures. Adult feral cats were
cared for and then returned to their original sites where
feeding programs were set up. During the 1990’s, RAPS
had over 35 feeding sites to visit daily in Richmond and
in south Vancouver.
10
Caring and passionate, animal-loving people continued to
join our team to help us make Richmond a safe place for
all stray and unwanted animals. Seeing their dedication
was inspiring and we knew our mission was on track for
the well-being of the animals. During our first 15 years of
operation, everyone at RAPS was a volunteer. They not only
gave of their time, but they often paid for food, vet care and
building projects. In 1999, animal-loving and generous local
businessman, Allan Brew, began construction on our cat
sanctuary in northeast Richmond, and construction continued over the next few years as our needs grew. Since then,
the sanctuary has been home to well over a thousand cats
who would have otherwise lost their lives in other shelters or
to starvation and disease on the streets.
In 2006, RAPS opened a thrift store to support the cat sanctuary work. Everyone at the store is a volunteer ensuring that
100% of the revenue goes directly to the animals.
In 2007, RAPS was awarded
the City of Richmond
animal shelter contract
and took it over from the
B.C.S.P.C.A. This was the
last step needed to reach our
goal of NO-KILL sheltering
and making sure the lives of
every animal in Richmond
would be safe. At the City
shelter, we take in and care
for all animals–dogs, cats,
rabbits, birds, rodents, and
farm animals. Wildlife such
as skunks, raccoons and birds are cared for by RAPS staff
and transferred as soon as possible to wildlife rescue.
RAPS has 20 staff members and 165 active volunteers
from all walks of life who give thousands of hours every
month to help ensure that all homeless animals in Richmond are given the time, veterinary care and
rehabilitation needed so they can
live a happy and healthy life. Heinz came to RAPS as a
stray with a hind leg that had
been broken several years ago
and no previous vet care was
given. The poor little guy suffered
incredible pain trying to maneuver on a
broken leg. Upon arriving at the shelter, he was rushed
to our vet for pain care and assessment, and then taken
to a specialist to see if his leg could be saved. Unfortunately, too much time had passed without proper medical intervention and our only option was to amputate.
He has recovered remarkably well and was hopping
happily around the shelter and right into the hearts of
the wonderful family who decided to adopt him. RAPS assists low-income citizens with spaying and neutering of dogs and cats. We also help with food and veterinary care for their animals, as well as actively trapping
all stray and feral cats reported to us. Every day we offer
counseling to pet owners with concerns,
such as diet and litter box problems, behavior challenges, and
how to find their lost pets.
Janet Reid was also a longtime volunteer and now supervises cleaning and maintenance
operations at the cat sanctuary. Janet worked as our first office manager at the City
animal shelter and then returned to the sanctuary
where she inspires volunteers to give their all in creating a clean, comfortable environment for the cats. Dogs at RAPS’ shelter are fed a premium raw food diet
donated by Jake and Daisey’s. Shelter dogs arrive in very
poor health due to neglect and diet, and within weeks
their health has improved noticeably with this dietary
change. Our cats with digestive problems have also benefited from the raw food diet.
Loving and helping animals brings much joy to our lives.
In animal rescue, the work we do can be difficult, but it’s
always worth it and very rewarding. At RAPS we feel it is
a privilege to be in a position to save the lives of so many
animals and we hope other communities will be challenged to follow RAPS example and bring true No-Kill
sheltering to their cities. Leslie Landa began volunteering at the sanctuary in 1999, and
she is a true cat whisperer. She
has spent countless hours taming
feral kittens and gaining their trust,
and in 2005, she became RAPS’ first employee. As the
senior animal care attendant, Leslie is able to quickly
identify medical problems, and she and her team-mates
put in long hours to restore the cats to good health.
PET CONNECTION • April - MAY 2012
Our society has enjoyed many successes, including working with City Council to ban the sale of rabbits and puppies from Richmond pet stores. Richmond was the first
city in Canada to bring in this legislation. We strongly
encourage people to adopt from shelters and not support
puppy and kitten mills or careless breeders by buying
animals in pet stores. Everyone can do their part by not
allowing their own pets to breed.

The neck and cervical spine are the most important energy
channels in the body. If the flow of energy in the neck is
interrupted or restricted, an array of problems may arise
including; lameness, skin issues, ear problems, allergies,
lung and heart problems, digestive issues, eye conditions,
and thyroid gland dysfunctions.
It is also suspected that there may be a link between
neck injuries and cancer.

Paws for Hope believes that much can be accomplished
with education and the provision of support to both pet
guardians and the rescue groups who work on the front
lines to save the neglected, abandoned and abused. In
their first year, they have implemented Roxy’s Fund, a
No Pet Sales in Pet Stores Campaign and the Guardian
Angel Fund.
Roxy’s Fund is a community support program run in
partnership with Downtown Dogs and Obediently
Yours K9 Training. The program was developed to work
with agencies in the Downtown East Side to provide
support to homeless, street involved and low income pet
guardians. Through the collection of donated food, toys,
bedding, jackets and other items necessary to care for
pets, Roxy’s Fund recognizes the tremendous value pets
bring to our lives and helps ensure guardians living in the
DTES can give their pets what they need to be healthy. Working with the community and in partnership with
animal welfare/rescue groups is critical to Paws for
Hope’s work. The goal is not to compete, but rather,
to work together to make animal welfare a priority in
our province and to provide a high standard of care and
accountability in the work that we do.

Debra Probert has been executive director of the Vancouver
Humane Society since 1996,
having previously volunteered for
the society and served as a director.
She has been a committed vegetarian for over
22 years, after seeing a truckload of chickens
on their way to slaughter. She is proud to be
referred to as a “spent hen” by her staff and
lives in Surrey with her husband, rescued dog
and five dysfunctional cats.
Difference
he Vancouver Humane Society (VHS) began in
1985 with a small group of people who wanted to
address the underlying causes of animal abuse in Vancouver. Spay/neuter has always been a primary focus, along
with circuses with exotic animals and rodeo in the cities
of Vancouver and Surrey.
In 2002, VHS launched its most ambitious project
to date, Chicken OUT! This campaign, which is still
ongoing today, has been extremely successful in engaging
the public about the cruelty inherent in the production of eggs and the role that consumers play with their
choices in the marketplace. Since the campaign started,
the number of cage-free eggs produced and sold in BC
has skyrocketed – 15% compared to 3% nationally. This
means that thousands of hens are out of cruel battery
cages and living in more natural conditions where they
can scratch in the earth, dust-bathe and nest - all because
consumers are purchasing more humane products like
certified organic free-range eggs.
Thaw and Serve
Other projects include the rodeo at the Calgary Stampede
and sled dog welfare. We are working tirelessly to convince
the Stampede, which is the largest rodeo in Canada, to
follow the lead of the Cloverdale rodeo and at the very least,
drop the cruelest event – calf-roping. VHS has been instrumental in getting the issue of animal abuse at rodeos into the
media; locally, nationally and internationally. As well, with
the help of the cosmetic company LUSH, we have made the
provincial government take animal abuse seriously in the
unregulated industry of dog-sledding and touring.
The Vancouver Humane Society has a strong presence in
Metro Vancouver and effects change for animals across the
country. This is only a sampling of our activities. We have
remained true to our Mission, which states that VHS “is
dedicated to exposing animal abuse and assisting individuals, businesses and governments to end animal suffering,
cruelty and exploitation”. Check us out at www.vancouverhumanesociety.bc.ca, www.chickenout.ca or www.

Together we’ll build a brighter future.
Punky’s fate is not known as she mistakenly got caught
up in the shelter system.
Why go to a dog breeder, cat breeder or pet stores to buy
a dog or a cat when you can ADOPT and save lives!
Jamie loved her cat Punky more than words can say, and
it is because of Punky that she started the Punky Fund
and is financially helping local animal charities. It’s not
about recognition that has motivated her, but rather a
new calling in her life to help make a difference in the
animal world.
Voice for the Voiceless!
You don’t have to be rich to make a difference. Not everyone can give financially. If you can’t give money, you could
give your time, or any skills you might have. The shelters
are always in need of various resources and items.
Please do not underestimate your one signature, it
counts! With all the signatures, we can try to make the
difference to the animals. Remember, we are their only
VOICE and their only HOPE!

Is it important to take my
puppy to a groomer?
“Even if your puppy doesn’t need a bath or haircut just yet,
it’s the experience which is most important.”
T
By Hilary Barchash
PET CONNECTION •April - MAY 2012
he newest member of your family has four legs
and fur, and is just about the cutest little bundle
of joy you ever did see. And now, along with the
pleasure of enjoying your new puppy, you’ve also taken
on the responsibility of keeping him healthy by feeding
him whole foods, exercising with him, and keeping him
well groomed.
16
When it comes to grooming, most dogs have coats
which wouldn’t normally be found in nature,
and it’s simply not possible for them to groom
themselves. That’s where you come in, and
you have a couple of choices. You can take
your puppy to a professional groomer, or, with
a little bit of know-how, you can groom him
yourself at home.
Whichever choice you make, it’s best to take
him to a professional groomer for his first few
dates with the bathtub and clippers, while he is
young and curious. This serves a couple of purposes. Most importantly, it exposes your dog to
grooming in a studio environment while he is
at the learning stage in his life, and therefore
most accepting of new things; this is the
time when his mother would be teaching him about the world and it’s many
wonders. Later, when his mother would naturally wean
him, he’ll begin questioning new things, and be wary
as a means of survival. At this point, introducing new
experiences becomes considerably more challenging.
So even if your puppy doesn’t need a bath or haircut just
yet, it’s the experience which is most
important! Even if you plan to do
your own grooming, there will
probably
come a time when you require the services of a grooming
studio; you may move to a smaller home, you may leave
him with someone who isn’t able to groom him, it may
become difficult for you as your dog ages, or you simply
might decide you don’t want to do it anymore. The point
is, you never know what the future holds.
Visiting a professional groomer also gives you the opportunity to learn which brushes and tools are best suited to
your dogs coat type, and just as importantly, the correct
way to use them to achieve the best and safest results. She
may also be able to give you some tips and tricks to make
grooming at home easy and enjoyable.
So, back to our original question of when should you
take your puppy to the groomer for the first time. I usually tell people “a week after you bring him home” as a
good rule of thumb. If he’s eight weeks old when you
bring him home for the first time, give him some time
to adjust to his new surroundings, then visit your new
groomer when he’s nine weeks. Ideally, you would have
already chosen and met with her - you’ll feel much more
at ease leaving him there for the first time, and if you’re at
ease, he’ll be at ease.
Remember, dogs mimic our moods because we are taking the roll of their mother, and that’s who they learn
behavior from. So take your puppy to the groomer early
and often while he is very young. This investment will
make for a smooth and stress free
lifetime of good grooming and
good health.

The All Important SIT
By Valerie Barry, Professional Member APDT
In Partnership With Dogs
www.inpartnershipwithdogs.com
T
here are many skills that help your dog be
well mannered and a pleasure to live with,
but some things just stand out in importance. The Sit is one of those critical skills. It’s a
polite choice for meeting people, a nice way to ask
for something, a neutral way of greeting other dogs,
and even life saving if it stops a mad rush across a
busy road.
Strangely, even though the Sit is one of the first things a
puppy learns, it’s one of the least practiced skills! Puppies
are taught to sit first by their moms and then later by other
adult dogs. The Sit is a neutral position and a polite choice
either to a correction received by another dog, or as a way
of asking for something that another dog has.
I often hear dog owners confidently say, “my dog knows
how to sit” – but does he really? Try something new:
lie down on your living room floor and ask your dog
to Sit; or turn your back and ask your dog to Sit. What
happens? A Sit has a pretty simple criteria - “butt on the
ground”.
PET CONNECTION •April - MAY 2012
How do you teach your dog your criteria for Sit?
18
The answer is Practice! You need to practice everywhere
and every way you can so that it becomes clear that Sit
is just “butt on the ground”. We need to help our dogs
understand that it doesn’t matter whether we’re standing, sitting or lying down; whether we’re close by or
further away; whether we’re sounding worried and upset
or relaxed and happy; or even whether we’re moving or
standing still – it’s simply “butt on the ground”.
Follow these simple guidelines:
• Give your cue only once – if you don’t get a Sit, then
you need more practice you don’t need more intimidation or urgency in your request.
• Mark it – make sure you give a Click or a verbal
marker (“Great!”) as soon as the butt hits the ground
so the goal is clear.
• Pay generously – offer a treat, a toy or something
your dog loves as a reward for each successful Sit.
• Be successful more often than not – start your practice in areas that are easy for your dog, like the kitchen,
and keep him on leash so he can’t just wander off.
• Don’t rush the process – move on to new distractions
gradually after getting frequent success at each point.
• Be flexible – if your success rate goes down, scale down
your expectations. If necessary, go all the way back to
using a treat lure at his nose to get a Sit and gradually
work back up to a good response to a verbal cue.
• Keep your training sessions short and fun – that
always makes the job go faster!

Together with her business partner, Lisa, the concept

The Story of Akwai-jim (Ask her)
By Lori Lelonde
In 1999, during the early days of my herbal studies
I found myself back in my hometown of Sioux
Lookout, Ontario for a visit with my folks.
While at home I reconnected with a childhood
friend, and he invited me to an Anishinaabe
herbal medicine gathering in the northern community of Fort Hope. I was very honored and the
gathering was truly the most amazing educational
experience of my life.
very deformed with hip dysplasia and there
was a good possibility she would be cripple.
I should consider putting her down to save
her from the inevitable pain.
At the end of the week I was invited into the village to have
breakfast. As we left out the door I looked down to see a tiny
puppy snuffling through the sand looking for bugs. I bent over
and picked her up. Her belly was very swollen and her eyes were
fogged over. She was very young.
I asked around but she didn’t belong to anyone and I knew
that I had to get her some help.
Standing there holding this little puppy I wondered what I
should do. I asked a friend, Juliette Blackhawk, who simply
said, “keep her”. Would the pilot let me fly her back with us?
Juliette said it shouldn’t be a problem. I asked Juliette what I
should call her.
After overcoming shock and grief for this
little soul I decided I would learn everything
I could about her (dis)ability; I was, after all,
an herbalist and I figured there had to be some
ways to treat her. So began my education on treating animals using herbs and Akwai-jim became my greatest
teacher. Although there have been many animal teachers
since, she is the one who led me down this path. I treated her
with nutritious food, herbal remedies and love.
I had to say goodbye to Akwai-jim when she passed away last
summer but I did so knowing she lived a long, healthy, happy
life and that she was loved by everyone who met her. She was
always happy to greet customers when she was “working” at
the store and I watched her put smiles on many human faces.
To honor her and the countless gifts she shared, Akwai-jim is
now the new face of Your Pet Pals.
Akwai-jim: Thank you. Miigwech.
“Akwai-jim”. What does that mean? “Ask her”.
Back home in Victoria she proved to be the sweetest little
thing too. I noticed, however, that her back end looked somewhat odd. When she was 6 months old I brought her into the
vet to be spayed and I asked him to x-ray her hips at the same
time. The vet called me in with some bad news: her hips were

Little Paws Rescue Society
Little Paws Rescue Society started approximately eleven years ago in the Lower
Mainland by Julia Beaton and Diana Sinfield.
Over the years, Little Paws Rescue Society has gathered a talented and varied network
of people; from those who foster, fund raise and sew fleece blankets to those who use
their wide range of contacts to keep everyone informed of any dog related situations.
Little Paws Rescue would like to “Thank You” to all our friends in Rescue and
other rescue groups who have supported us. We all share the goal of finding loving
caring homes for these special dogs.
Sweet innocent little Mattie is in a foster home and is available for adoption. See
photo page 3.
Mattie is a very sweet little Shitzu who was found abandoned in a park last December.
She had never been to a groomer her entire life and as a result the fur was so long around
her face that her eyes were matted shut. She couldn’t open them to see. As a result of
this neglect her eyes are permanently damaged causing a condition called “dry eye.” Her
eyes are unable to produce tears so every time she blinks it is very painful. Rusty is also available for adoption! See photo page 3
Rusty is a bright, playful, 2 1/2 year old, 7 pound, neutered Poodle. He gets on well
with the other dogs in his foster home and is friendly to people. Rusty was surrendered
to Little Paws Rescue Society because his family had no idea how to cope with his feeding issues, digestion problems, and the behaviors that were related to these issues. Rusty
loves to play and will be a wonderful, fun loving companion for his new person(s).
