Rhythm & Roots artist profiles The 24th Street Wailers AJ Ghent Band Anders Osborne Wayne Toups of Band Courtbouillon The 24Th STreeT WAIlerS (Fri/Sat) Experienced, road-tested and tougher than a two by four, The 24th Street Wailers are five Canadian musicians who originally met in music school. Their major influence? The sounds from the freewheeling period in the ‘40s and ‘50s when the Blues gave birth to Rock’n’Roll in black communities in major American cities. When showmanship mattered. When the sax player, not the guitarist, got the girls. The band consists of flame-haired lead singer/ drummer Lindsay Beaver, explosive guitarist Emily Burgess, tenor sax wizard Jon Wong, Harmony bass master Mike Archer, and newest member Jesse Whiteley on piano. The band’s 2014 album, Wicked (Independent), was recently featured by House of Blues Radio as the “Blues Breaker of the Week” as well as a #1 charting on the Baker’s Dozen Blues Charts. www.The24thstreetwailers.com AJ GhenT BAnD (Sun) Often referred to by fans as Prince and James Browns’ musical love child, lap steel guitarist AJ Ghent leads the AJ Ghent Band to span the genres of southern rock, blues, soul and funk music—fusing together what he calls “Southern Soul.” The band’s music has charm, charisma and a sound that is nothing short of innovative, electrifying, precise yet sensual, and heart-captivating. It speaks of love, life, relationships, changes, hardship and trouble, and through a combination of unique and unpredictable sound and rhythm, the AJ and the band aim to inspire their audience to come together with a message of love. With a debut album due out very soon, the AJ Ghent Band has the music world taking notice! www.ajghentband.com 20. AnDerS OSBOrne (Sun) Between the potency of his richly detailed songwriting, his intensely emotional, soulful vocals and his piercing, expert guitar work, New Orleans’ Anders Osborne is a true musical treasure. Guitar Player calls him “the poet laureate of Louisiana’s fertile roots music scene.” New Orleans' Gambit Weekly recently honored Osborne as the Entertainer Of The Year. OffBeat named him the Crescent City’s Best Guitarist for the third year in a row, and the Best Songwriter for the second straight year. Osborne also won Song Of the Year for his composition, Louisiana Gold. Since his recording debut in 1989, Osborne has written virtually all of his own material and contributed memorable songs to a wide variety of artists. He has recorded and toured as part of the Voice of the Wetlands All-Stars alongside such luminaries as Tab Benoit, Cyril Neville, Waylon Thibodeaux and Dr. John, has appeared in the HBO drama, Treme, and has song credits in numerous feature films. With Peace (Alligator), his 2013 cd, Anders Osborne delivers the next chapter of his spiritual odyssey, emerging from chaos to finding inner calm. www.Andersosborne.com The BAnD COurTBOuIllOn (Sat/Sun) Wayne Toups, Steve Riley, and Wilson Savoy, three of the most prominent Cajun accordionists, come together with bassist Eric Frey in The Band Courtbouillon to play the music they love, the type of music on which they were brought up—loose, fun and totally real. This is truly a group of multigenerational all-stars known for their work with their own much heralded bands: Steve (accordion, vocals, guitar) is best known as the leader of Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys, Wilson (accordion, fiddle, guitar, and vocals) is frontman for Pine Leaf Boys, Rhythm & Roots artist profiles Wayne (accordion, vocals) is the founder of ZyDeCajun (“a Cajun/Zydeco fusion band with a rock ‘n’ roll attitude”), and Eric plays with the Revelers and Red Stick Ramblers. In 2013, The Band Courtbouillon’s self-titled debut album (on Valcour Records) won the Grammy for Best Regional roots Album—the first traditional Cajun band to have ever won a Grammy! facebook.com/thebandcourtbouillon BIll KIrChen & TOO MuCh Fun (Fri) Grammy nominated guitarist, singer and songwriter Bill Kirchen is one of the fortunate few who can step onto any stage, play those trademark licks that drove his seminal Commander Cody classic Hot Rod Lincoln into the Top Ten, and elicit instant recognition for a career that has spanned over 40 years and includes guitar work with Nick Lowe, Emmylou Harris, Doug Sahm, Elvis Costello and many more. Named “A Titan of the Telecaster” by Guitar Player Magazine, he celebrates an American musical tradition where rock 'n' roll and country music draws upon its origins in blues and bluegrass, Western swing from Texas and California honkytonk. His latest cd, Seeds and Stems (Proper Records) was released in June 2013. www.billkirchen.com CJ ChenIer & The reD hOT lOuISIAnA BAnD (Sat/Sun) According to The Boston Globe, “C.J. Chenier attacks the accordion with the tension and drive of James Brown...creating contemporary, turbo-charged dance music.” Having been known as “the heir to the zydeco throne,” C.J.’s music has always embraced the traditions of his famous father, “The King of Zydeco,” Clifton Chenier. C.J’s earliest musical influences were eclectic, and his first instruments were piano, tenor saxophone and flute. It wasn't until his 21st birthday, after studying music at Texas Southern University, that C.J. first performed with his famous father and the legendary Red Hot Louisiana Band. After Clifton’s death in 1987, C.J. inherited his dad’s accordion as well as the band, taking his father’s music and building upon it, adding elements of the music he grew up with and infusing traditional zydeco with a contemporary punch, pushing the music to new and exciting levels. With Can’t Sit Down (World Village) the band’s latest release, Grammy nominated C.J Chenier & The Red Hot Louisiana Band are bringing their infectious, boisterous music to fans everywhere and we’re happy to have them pass a good time at Rhythm & Roots. www.cjchenierandtheredhotlouisianaband.com ChArleS BrADley AnD hIS exTrAOrDInAIreS (Sun) Bradley’s remarkable, against-allodds rise has been substantially documented. He transcended a bleak life on the streets and struggled through a series of ill-fitting jobs, most famously as a James Brown impersonator at Brooklyn clubs, before finally being discovered by Daptone's Gabe Roth. The year following the release of his CD No Time For Dreaming was one triumph after another: a stunning performance at SXSW that earned unanimous raves; and similarly-gripping appearances at Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, Newport Folk Festival and Outside Lands (to name just a few). He’s garnered high spots on many Year-End Best Lists from Rolling Stone, SPIN, GQ, Paste and more. His latest album, Victim of Love is a continuation of his story, moving past the 'heartache and pain' and closer to the promise of hope. Bradley’s insanely tight six-man Extraordinaires bring horns, sax and major spirit. The “Screaming Eagle of Soul’s” show 21. But don’t tell that to Rench, the mastermind behind the Emmy-nominated bluegrass/hip-hop outfit Gangstagrass. The musical mashup started in Rench’s head when he was a break-dancing grade school kid who also dug his parents’ favorite country artists. As an adult, he took some hip hop tracks recorded in his Brooklyn studio and experimented with them, combining the vocal tracks with samples of bluegrass, blues, and electronic beats. The result was a genre-demolishing blitz called Rench Presents: Gangstagrass, which soon produced enough internet buzz to catch the ears of executives at FX Network who licensed a Gangstagrass track for their new western crime series, Justified, starring Timothy Olyphant and eventually commissioned the series’ title song. The rest, as they say, is history. The show became an instant hit and Long Hard Times To Come earned Gangstagrass an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music. It has opened every episode of the series since 2010.
