The Case Middle School Courier Volume 4 Issue 6 June 2008 Produced by the Students of Punahou School, 1601 Punahou Street, Honolulu, Hawaii 96822 Aloha Nui Loa e Mahalo “What we’re experiencing this year is a fairly healthy, typical pattern of a vibrant school.” —Principal Walker New Experiment in the Snack Bar Above, these ladies need an hour to prepare your food. At right, here’s how the Snack Bar provides drinks. Photos by K. Chagami By Natalie Moore A t the end of this year, some of Punahou’s best Junior School teachers will be leaving, and new ones will have been “Skyped” aboard. The CMS Courier interviewed Mr. Walker, the Junior School Principal, on how the leaving teachers affect the school. According to Mr. Walker, the number of teachers leaving this year is pretty typical. “What we’re experiencing this year is a fairly healthy, typical pattern of a vibrant school,” he said. For example, 8th grade social studies teacher, Mrs. Barbara Jamile, has taught at Punahou for over thirty years [see story on page 13]. According to Mr. Walker, you can’t just replace thirty years of wisdom and perspective, so you need to achieve a balance between experienced teachers and new teachers with fresh ideas. We need to honor and celebrate the leaving teachers and embrace and support the joining teachers, Mr. Walker said. And then, there’s always the question about what will be done to fill the leaving teachers’ places. With all the technology, it has By Katelyn Chagami W hen you’re hungry, where do you go to get a snack? The Snack Bar, right? If you haven’t lately, you’ve got to get some money and head over. Look for the new menu. The menu has been changed from only one special per day to 10-15 specials per day. According to the Director of Food Services, Mrs. Marcia Wright, she decided to change some things. First, she said, she wanted to keep students from being bored with the menu. Also, she wanted to use healthier items and to do that, she needed more staff to help put together the healthier foods. She also had to take off a few unhealthy snacks, including pizza, nachos, and chili, which they made in the kitchen. become very easy to find new teachers from all over the world. Mr. Walker said that he was able, via Skype, to interview possible new teachers from as far away as Moscow, Italy, and New York. Of course, the school also honors the leaving teachers. It does this at the Aloha Ceremony, which was held on May 21st this year. The Ceremony is a celebration for the leaving teachers as well as the retirees. (Also recognized are the new babies that were born into the Punahou community over the past year.) Mr. Walker said that the school does a good job honoring the leaving teachers. Mrs. Jamile has been at Punahou for 35 years as a fifth, sixth, and eighth grade teacher, as well as a third/fourth grade supervisor. Also, Mrs. Maylani Chang will be retiring after 30 years at Punahou. Mrs. Chang has been the mainstay Chinese teacher at Punahou and has learned as much as her students have learned from her, she said. Chaplain Yukio Hamada will be leaving Punahou as well. He has been called a master teacher— he was, for many years, a math teacher in the Academy, coming to Punahou in 1967. He also coached football, basketball, and baseball. In May, when Mrs.Wright started this program, the goal was to try improve diet and to keep choices interesting . A health program from the USDA recommends that your food intake can only have less than 30% calories of fat and only 15% calories sugar. You should also know that there are only 37 staff members to run four lunch rooms and two full snack bars—and they do all of the cooking and preparation work, too. The CMS Courier June 2008 Lenovo Tablet PCs for Some 8th Graders Next Year 100 Speeches in 3 Hours! By Scout Shutter M any students might be wondering which laptops are going to be offered to 8th grade students next year in the Academy. The two computers that will be the offered are the new Lenovo Tablet and the Apple MacBook laptop. The main differences between the two are that the tablet allows students to integrate sketches and handwritten notes with their electronic files, and gives them the option of annotating digital and internet resources using handwriting. The MacBook offers students a familiar tool to use to make for an easier transition to the Academy. Punahou has decided to issue the tablets to only 60 students because the tablets are new to Punahou and they want to have a manageable number of them so that they can provide both technical and instructional support and ensure they will fit into the current learning and network environments. Punahou will choose those 60 kids by having a lottery of all the kids who requested a tablet. Then, after 60 students, they will continue the drawing and have a waiting list. Students who later decide to switch away from a tablet will have the option of switching back to a MacBook at the end of October or the end of the school year. In case you are worried about how you are going to adjust to a Windows machine, it’s pretty much the same. You need to learn where things are located and how to use a right-click. Most keyboard shortcuts are the same, and once you are on the internet or inside a software program, you can’t really see too much difference, because so many of the programs are the same By Kelly Langeslay O n Saturday, April 19, the Punahou Speech Festival began. Eight middle schools like ‘Iolani, Sacred Hearts, and Maryknoll came to this event. Over 100 entries of speech from the students came in four categories: Group Interpretation, Impromptu, Storytelling, and Poetry/ Program reading. In Punahou School, we had 31 middle students attending: 11 sixth graders, 13 seventh graders, and 5 eighth graders. They all fought to win a 1st place trophy for their school and for themselves. The way speech meets are organized is that the kids are given name tags with a certain code on them, like G22 or S34. A paper is put up in a hallway Page 2 (Word, PowerPoint, iTunes, Firefox, Safari, Inspiration, Comic Life all work in Windows as well). The different programs are for editing movies, videos, and sound—but they have a similar logic to the iLife suite. When asked if Punahou would be switching to the tablets for the Middle School students, they replied saying, no because the MacBook has been designed to fit the developmental needs of Middle School students, and the Mac has been very successful at meeting those needs within the Middle School curriculum. The current 8th graders will get to keep the current iBooks they have now and those laptops will not be used in the Academy. Students that choose the tablet will have many ways to get support and help from many people on campus. They will be asked to attend an hour-long workshop in the afternoon on Registration Day (August 22) to learn about the tablet and the software on it. After that, students with tablets will be grouped together in homerooms so that their homeroom teachers can provide support. In addition to the homeroom teacher, students can receive help from the outpost throughout the day, from one of the available Technology Resource Teachers in the Academy, or from on-line tutorials that will be made available. with the code and the room number the participant is assigned to. Students are usually assigned with people who are also speaking in the same genre. All are put into a room and they say their speech in front of two judges and a timer. After everybody has said his or her speech, the judges rank each person from 1st place to last place. There are two rounds of this. To win a trophy for a particular genre, a person or team must have received first place at least three times. However, only one person or group can win the trophy. In the genre of group interpretation, Sawyer Henshaw, Maiya Smith, and Kelly Langeslay won the trophy. And in Impromptu speaking, Connor Lawhorn won the trophy. All of the other categories were won by other schools. The CMS Courier June 2008 Alternative Fuels: Not Nice to Environment E85 is nearly all ethanol. Many think it’s clean while ethanol is actually worse for the environment. Stock Craze Hits Sixth Graders Analysis by Travis Nakamura A ll right, so with all this talk about alternative fuels, are they really that environmentally friendly? The answer is none of the current alternatives are better for our planet. I’ll evaluate two of the most talked about. First, electric cars. They come across as great for the environment but the pollution is made where the consumer cannot see, starting with your local power plant. Because the cars are fueled by being plugged in, they run on electricity which is derived from burning coal. Burning coal is far worse than running on gas. Furthermore, these cars are not efficient with the fuel they receive. In actuality, gasoline is incredibly efficient as the car burns it very cleanly. If our electricity was derived from nuclear energy or wind, electric cars would be very clean. The US doesn’t have such alternatives readily available. In addition the places where the batteries are made are also extremely polluted and are a cause of global warming in themselves. Also, the myriad parts in electric cars are terrible for the environment and they’ll all collect By Noe Lum S ixth grade is the age of hobbies, bragging and boasting. But many sixth graders have found a new thing to do; watch the stock market. As a school assignment, these There is a very big gap between losses and gains in this project. They are competing to see who can finish the school year with the highest percentage of gain from their original sum of money invested. Page 3 in some landfill. Doesn’t sound so nice for the environment, does it? Now, the other talked-about alternative: it’s ethanol, which is derived from corn in this country. This is excruciatingly inefficient because it takes 1.5 gallons of ethanol to have the equivalent energy of 1 gallon of gas. This fuel is causing a major hardship for the United States. First, it requires American farmers to plant corn for ethanol as opposed to wheat. As you know, much of our food is from wheat. So, that means everything with wheat costs more. That means bread, cereal, and meat (because the livestock is fed wheat) will demand higher prices. Also, ethanol emits formaldehyde, methanol, and carbon monoxide. Gee, I’d sure love to breathe more of that stuff! Because all the current alternative fuels are very poor, here are the advantages of pricey gas. First, it forces us to preserve oil, as we can’t afford prices so we buy fuel-efficient cars. Also, we should have auto makers lighten cars because all the electric car and ethanol parts add weight, which in turn makes cars less efficient. By dropping a mere 100 pounds from a car will increase mileage by around 2 m.p.g., even with the same engine. In my defense for the gas automobile, each cow emits more C02 and methane (which is a serious cause of global warming, far more than human activity) than an S.U.V. So I’ve got a decent solution, lets eat more steaks and burger’s. (You should know that was a complete joke and shouldn’t be taken literally.) So really then, alternatives aren’t as good as the environmentalists would say. The losses and gains have spanned from -2.05% to +11.44%. Imagine if you sold your stocks at 11.44% gain! Here is what the students say about the companies they invested in. “My best stock is probably Apple,” - Malia Staab. “Our best companies would probably be Volcom, Costco and Verizon” - Anonymous “I shouldn’t have bought CocaCola, it’s down a lot” - Kimi “Microsoft is really messing me up” - Anonymous Ms. Ching says that the stock market project, “Gives them (the kids) a start on investing. You can lose a lot of money, but you can gain a lot too. It’s good to learn about your companies before you invest in them.” The CMS Courier June 2008 School Is Out and Summer Is In! By Erika Payne E very summer, many people go on some kind of vacation, whether it’s to Maui or to somewhere in Europe. There are many ways to travel: By boat, car, plain, bus. People usually use a plane when going from island to island, but ever since the Super Ferry had opened, people have also used that to travel. But unfortunately, it only goes to two islands: Honolulu, O‘ahu to Kahului, Maui. A survey was given to 30 different students in random grades, and the results are shown on the pie chart at left. As you can see, many people go to the mainland during the summer. When the survey was taken, many said that they were going to Disneyland (or Disney World). When Aloha Airlines shut down, many people who planned to travel were affected by this tragedy. But still, many people are still traveling on different travel services. What is the ultimate dining experience you could think of? Maybe you want to eat breakfast in a rotating room. Or maybe you’d like to eat lunch at a dining table on an airplane. Well, here comes the craziest and probably most incredible experience: dinner in the sky. Dinner in the Sky is literally a large dining table, with twenty-two seats attached, suspended by a crane. The table can be lifted to a maximum of fifty feet in the air. Each passenger is strapped in with a four-point seat belt, and are served by five waiters in the center. Other options include lights, heating, music, TV screens, and a customized banner underneath the table for all on land to see. The food itself is undoubtedly exceptional. As they answer on their web site, their chefs serve up anything from sushi to lobster. But alas, this magnificent experience is anything but affordable. For a party of 22 diners, it’ll cost you about $12,400! At dinnerinthesky.com, they answer your FAQs. After all, who wants to be up in the sky, buffeted by winds and getting drenched by rain? Due to safety issues, there is a height restriction so that all participants can be safely secured in their seats. To dine in the sky, you must be at least 150 centimeters tall, or about 4’10”. However, the government denies any indication of a recession, although the signs are all around us. On the Chicago Board of Trade, it is estimated that bags of rice will jump up to $24.85 per bag. As of April 29th, the United Nations has begun a task force designed to assist the World Food Program. In the world however, the countries that are suffering the most are in Africa and in Asia. In some families, rice is the basic need for poor households. Now with this crisis, it is estimated that many people will starve on a daily basis. Ban Ki-Moon, the United Nations Secretary General and the UN’s food and agricultural organization has already prepared a 1.7 billion dollar plan to assist those in need in more poorer countries. As of now, many fear that the costs of basic necessities will increase so drastically, that the term “basic living” will be a thing of the past. Photo courtesy of thatoldthing.blogspot.com By A.J. Muth W ith global warming occurring there is now the ever pressing need to reduce waste and carbon emissions to save the world. We ourselves are very involved in this struggle to save the world from global warming. What if, though, we didn’t have to reduce carbon emissions and waste because there weren’t any emissions or waste to reduce? Wouldn’t that be wonderful? Soon there very well may be a place like that. It will be the city of the future. Masdar City. Masdar City will be a walled community in the United Arab Emirates that will have absolutely zero carbon emissions. To you this may seem an impossible feat, but it really is not. Many precautions are being considered and even if Masdar fails to produce zero emissions it will probably produce a lot fewer emissions than a regular city. Masdar City is planned to be six square kilometers housing 50,000 residents and 1,500 businesses. Masdar will also hold some of the greatest minds in the field of sustainability. Now as you take in all this information you may be wonder- By Paulina Reyes J ust last month, my friend brought to school her issue of the fashion magazine “Seventeen.” As we were browsing and pointing at the outfits and accessories that we like, we stumbled across an article called “The Cutest Ecofriendly Pieces.” On this page “Seventeen” was showcasing “the globally conscious must-haves.” Then not only a couple weeks later I was watching E! and they were airing a special episode on the Daily E! where they were showing the newest trendiest Eco fashions. These earth-friendly trends are not only appearing in fashion magazines and TV channels but on our local newspaper, ”The Honolulu Advertiser” who did a story on small scale ways you can help global warming. It seems that with all of the raising awareness of Global Warming designers are taking this as an opportunity to sell their products as well. Page 6 ing how in the world this could be possible. Yes we as a world have made wonderful advances in the field of sustainability but isn’t this too big of a step to take all at once? Actually it is not. To create this city everyone involved is giving it everything that is known to mankind. All of the buildings in Masdar City will be at maximum only five stories high and the streets will be only ten feet wide. Also what is sustainable without solar energy? Almost every building in Masdar City will be equipped with at least one solar or photo voltaic cell on top of it. Numerous other sustainable power sources will also be used. Of course you can’t possibly have zero carbon emissions if you have cars in the city. So of course Masdar City will be car free. To do this Masdar city has been planned so that it will be only 200 meters to the closest facility or transport system. Instead of using cars Masdar City will have a rail system to transport people from one end of the city to another. To complete this initiative there will be 10 main principles. The first is that 100% percent of the energy be provided by renewable energy sources such as photo voltaic plants. The second is no waste and that 99% percent of the waste be diverted from landfills. The third is sustainable transport and that there will be no cars whatsoever in Masdar City. The fourth is sustainable materials and that all materials are recycled materials. The fifth …continued on page 7 There is so many ways that you can be eco-friendly. In clothing you can purchase clothes made from organic cotton and other biodegradable materials. “Mudd” has put out a cute tote which advertises that it’s biodegradable on the side. Also you can get a chic sun dress from H & M which is made from organic dyes and cotton. Or now that summer vacation is coming up, you can show off a bathing suit made of organic cotton, hemp, and veggie dyes. If making sure that your wardrobe is made of 100% organic materials you can still help out and be ecofriendly by wearing clothes that support “Green” actions such as recycling or shirts that raise awareness of things happening around the world such as oil spills. Also you can get foundation and lipstick at “Sephora” that is made of only organic materials and has a box that you plant that has seeds in the side walls of the boxes that can later grow into a flower or tree. Most of the grocery stores are supporting the plastic bag ban and are offering their customers reusable bags. The CMS Courier June 2008 Project Green, the New and Improved The Scientific Method: 1. Create a conclusion 4Masdar City …continued from page 6 By Joanna Lee A Page 7 A: Well, there were a few problems with the Science Celebration. 7th graders are still developing their ability to organize and manage time. If a one-week project is hard to plan out, imagine having a project due in seven months. There was lots of procrastination. The chosen topics were also an issue. Students would frantically search the internet for ideas and often end up with mediocre projects that they did not really care about. The connection of these topics with the environmental issues of today is something that all of our students can relate to. Q: How did you decide the topics for the Sustainability Celebration? A: Last summer the 7th grade science teachers got together for a week and brainstormed ideas. During first and second term, we finalized the projects and tried to tie up loose ends. Q: Which do you think are the hardest topics? Which are the easiest? A: I think the constructionheavy projects were pretty difficult. Building multiple houses and windmills is tough. I think that making a solar cell or fuel cell were the hardest projects. The OEM projects were also pretty tough. It seems that some of the solar panel and plant/house projects are the easiest. This is the first year, and I’m sure you’ve heard that you are our guinea pigs. We discover mistakes every day. Next year we hope to have a better understanding for the difficulty levels of the projects. Q: Which project is your favorite? A: I think I like the OEM projects, because I have never seen them in action before. nybody at Punahou School who has ever been a 7th grader will know the terror of the Science Celebration. The Science Celebration was a major science project where each student must create his or her own problem and solve it with the scientific method. All of the work had to be done at home. Which meant that students had double the science load, at school doing their regular work, and at home, working on the science celebration, trying not to procrastinate. However, after years throwing hard work at students, the science teachers have finally come together to create an easier world for the 7th graders by introducing them to the “Sustainability Celebration,” otherwise know as Project Green. In Project Green, students do all the work at school, and there is a list of topics to choose from. However, this is not a restriction on ideas. Project Green focuses on projects that are of course, sustainable. From, “What color of cellophane boosts efficiency of the solar cell?” to “Does temperature affect the effectiveness of an OEM cell?” The Courier talked to Ms. Katie Vaughan of 7W about her opinions and the science behind Project Green. Q: Why did you decide to change from, “Science Celebration” to “Sustainability Celebration? A: Science Celebration was never an easy thing, for teachers or students. At the end of the year, we all found ourselves swimming in a sea of cardboard. We felt that we were really contributing to the waste problem. Also, the fact that so many students were ready to throw their hard work out was a little disheartening. We wanted to find a substitute where the students were more interested in their topics and proud of their work. Q: What were the major flaws in the Science Celebration? Hopefully, so it seems, Project Green will be even more successful than it was this year, when problems popped up everywhere, from the OEM’s not feeding on oil to being unable to get oxygen out of a homemade light bulb. Project Green is just another step towards a greener Punahou and a sustainable school. And while many students are sick of that word, would they rather be dipping teeth in multiple cleaning solutions? is sustainable food which means most of the food will be organic. The sixth is sustainable water which means that water consumption will be at least 50% less than the national average and that all unused water be reused. The seventh is habitats and wildlife which means that all important species be relocated to somewhere else. The eighth is culture and heritage which means that the architecture will integrate local values and culture. The ninth is equity and fair trades which means that everyone including construction workers will be paid fair salaries. And finally the tenth is health and happiness which means that there will be facilities for every type of group. This is certainly a very ambitious project and a very interesting one. It is almost completely unheard of a zero emissions city and this will certainly be the starting point of other zero emission projects that will start to develop all over the world. The CMS Courier June 2008 Free Rice: A Benefit for the Hungry and Students The Free Rice program has helped to feed thousands of people around the world. They fed 27,000 refugees from Myanmar that were in Bangladesh for two weeks. In Cambodia, they provided takehome rations to 13,500 pregnant and nursing women of 4 kilograms of rice for two months. That makes 240,000 pounds of rice in all that were donated. By Carole Kau D o you know what “amygdaloidal” means? And can you believe that “flagellate” means to whip something? Where do all these weird words come from? They’re from the Free Rice program! The Free Rice web site was made by the UN World Food Program to help end hunger. People ask, “How does it work?” There are vocabulary words on the site. You click on one of the choices that you think best defines the vocabulary word. For every question you get right, 20 grains of rice are donated to the hungry. Now how are the amounts of rice donated? When you play on Free Rice, advertisements appear on the bottom of your screen. The money received from the advertisements is used to buy the rice you donate by answering the vocabulary questions. Then the United Nations World Food Program distributes the bought rice to the hungry. This non-profit site lets people make a difference in the world just by going on the computer and clicking a mouse. But people wonder, are we really making that big a difference, or are we just wasting our time? The sad truth is, about 25,000 people die each day from hunger. Sometimes, it’s not just from hunger. People with deadly diseases die because without food, they don’t have the strength or immunity to fight the diseases off. And most of these casualties are children, never having a chance to finish school and live a happy life like any other person. Quote from Free Rice web site: “To a mother or father watching a loved child die in their arms from hunger, the rice you donate is more precious than anything in the world.” And donating rice from the site not only saves lives but it also helps nourish young minds. Children who eat well have been proven to learn and work better Page 8 in school. They also have been discovered to have better stamina and health. So the rice you donate keeps them full, strong, and focused! The Free Rice program has helped to feed thousands of people around the world. They fed 27,000 refugees from Myanmar that were in Bangladesh for two weeks. In Cambodia, they provided takehome rations to 13,500 pregnant and nursing women of 4 kilograms of rice for two months. That makes 240,000 pounds of rice in all that were donated. And in Uganda, the Free Rice program helped make feeding 66,000 school children for a week possible! Because of the vocabulary questions in the site, Free Rice also helps you improve your vocabulary. The site is full of words that are found in the SAT and can easily be found on vocabulary tests. When you get a word wrong, you drop down to an easier level. Later, the word you answered wrong will reappear for you to answer. If you answer it wrong again, you will drop again to lower level and the word will once again appear for you to answer correctly. This helps you learn new words and remember them after answering them multiple times. Their levels go from nice and easy to challenging even the most scholarly professors. There are 60 levels in all, but it is found rare for people to get above the level 50. Their vast amount of definitions comes from their wide variety of dictionaries, thesauruses, and books of synonyms. Some of their definitions you probably have never seen in your whole life, which is perfect for widening your vocabulary. And to make sure you don’t run out of words to learn, a team of professional lexicographers from the firm of Lexiteria helps add new words and harder levels to Free Rice database. Because of their help, five new levels were added in January 2008 and even five more in May of 2008. But not only do they give you challenging words to learn that may be helpful. They also look for easy, and medium level words that will always be useful for you to know. Because you can improve your vocabulary on the site, people who play the site receive tremendous benefits. Or so it says on the web site. According to Free Rice, learning new vocabulary can help you: • Formulate your ideas better • Write better papers, emails and business letters • Speak more precisely and persuasively • Comprehend more of what you read • Read faster because you comprehend better • Get better grades in high school, college and graduate school • Score higher on tests like the SAT, GRE, LSAT and GMAT …continued on page 9 The CMS Courier June 2008 *HICCUP!* *HICCUP!* The Annoying Hiccup Graphic from http://www.jobeaufoix.com 4Free Rice …continued from page 8 By Nicole Kim T o many people a hiccup is just an annoying thing that comes and goes. It usually is not a big problem and goes away after a short period of time. But to some unlucky people, it lasts for more than a day. Maybe even for more than a week. A hiccup or hiccough (a less common name but what they are also known as) is a spasmodic contraction of the diaphragm that normally only repeats several times per minute and goes away in a little while. Some cases such as the case of Jennifer Mee lasts at least a month. Jennifer Mee was just an ordinary girl, sitting in science class when the hiccups started. The hiccups went at a rate of 50 hiccups per minute, almost a hiccup per second—way more than the normal rate of hiccups and practically nonstop. What kind of levels do people get from playing on Free Rice? From a survey taken by six people, their individual levels were 21, 35, 28, 35, 14, and 23, all by Middle School students ranging from 6-8th grade. The calculated average level for these Middle School students was 26. Now that we’ve seen the result of Middle School students playing on Free Rice, why don’t we see what levels the teachers of Case Middle School can play up to? From another survey of 5 teachers, their highest levels were 53, 43, 43, 35, and 41. From this information, the average vocabulary level of an average Case Middle School teacher would be level 43 on Free Rice. They are known to be triggered by eating too quickly, being hungry for long, drinking a cold drink while eating a hot meal, belching, eating very hot or spicy food, laughing really hard, coughing, and drinking alcoholic beverages. It is also caused by crying out loud because of the air that enters the stomach, talking for too long, clearing the throat, and also from lack of vitamins. Although no one knows the one exact cure for hiccups, there are tons of suggested cures. When searching “hiccup cures” in Google there are about 569,000 results. On the internet the hiccup cure myths range from the most known ones which are drinking water and trying scaring it away. Thanks for introducing me to this!” Mr. White: (Science teacher in Team 7Y): “I read about the program and it seems like a terrific idea. What if a zillion people did this, where would they get all the rice to give to hungry people? At any rate, there ARE hungry people on our planet so any scheme to feed them is a good idea. Clean water is scarce, and the people of Burma fear that disease will soon follow this disaster, wiping out the survivors. Remember, it’s not the amount of cell phones you donate (although a lot would be good ), but it’s the fact that you’re willing to make a difference and that’s what counts. You can’t force someone to do something you want them to do because they need the willingness to do it. Once they have the willingness, the passion, soul, and pure heart will follow. So lend a hand, lend a heart, and give a cellphone. Sadly, the cyclone victims are still not getting sufficient care. The Burmese junta has blocked many food supplies, and does not allow foreign aid workers to enter the disaster area. If the supplies don’t get in, those injured will die, and the survivors will most likely be hit by infectious diseases like mentioned above. The French ambassador, JeanMaurice Ripert, says that the cyclone is “turning into a man-made catastrophe by negligence and the inhumane treatment of the Burmese people by a regime that is failing to act.” The CMS Courier June 2008 Doodle 4 Google: An Artistic, Innovative Competition Grace Moon’s winning design, “Up in the Clouds.” One of Dennis Hwang’s many designs, depicting Albert Einstein’s birthday. The CMS Courier June 2008 Iron Man Review By Kenny Yamashita T he new Iron Man movie deeply revealed my love for those nerdy gadgets that are often seen in movies and cartoons today. The great cast of Robert Downey Jr., Jeff Bridges, Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard, Shaun Toub, Leslie Bibb, Bill Smitrovich, and Nazanin Boniadi fit the parts perfectly. The movie strictly followed the original comic books by Marvel, but underplayed Tony’s well-known reputation of womanizing, alcoholism, and vanity. The story starts with a wealthy more self-conceited Tony Stark, who is the CEO and genius of a powerful weapons company. While on a trip to the Middle East, Tony finds himself hostage to a group of terrorists who are using his own weapon designs. During the kidnapping, Tony is severely damaged and is given a mechanical heart by a fellow captive named Yinsen. After the murder of Yinsen, Tony escapes with the iron suit the two of them Twilight: a Love Story that Literally Sucks You In By Jamie Chan & Selena Montania “I t doesn’t matter to me what you are.” A hard, mocking edge entered his voice. “You don’t care if I’m a monster? If I’m not human?” “No.” Ever heard of Twilight? It’s a bestselling novel written by Stephenie Meyer, and it draws in readers the moment they start to turn the first few pages. In fact, it’ so good, it’s being made into a movie. The story is about an average girl who, basically, “falls in love with a vampire,” to quote Robert Pattinson, the male lead of this movie, Edward Cullen. This story revolves around Bella Swan, a 17-year-old girl from Phoenix, who moves to Forks, a small town that barely has any sun. She is living with her dad and starts attending the town’s high school. Then, while in school, she notices a group of students, five mysterious, graceful, and beautiful creatures: the Cullen family. The Cullen family consists of 7 family members: Carlisle and Esme Cullen (the parents), Rosalie and Jasper Hale, and Emmett, Alice, and Edward Cullen. Bella starts to take an interest in them, especially Edward, the youngest of them all, and from first glance, the coldest of them too. Her first impression of him was that he detested her, but she later figures out what it all was about. Page 16 were secretly building. When returning to America, Tony is haunted by the fact that terrorist are using his weapons to wreak havoc across the Middle East. The guilt of Yinsen’s death motivates Tony to create an even more powerful weapon than ever, a new Iron Man suit. This time he isn’t selling it or the designs to anyone. He’s done with being a merchant of death. Tony uses this new Iron suit to fight the evils of the world. The movie’s effects do a great job of making us believe that this could really happen and that somewhere this technology is available. In almost every scene of the movie there is a wonderful display of what future technology could be like. The best part is that it is all believable, so your geek brain won’t trigger alarms at the fictional gadgets. In Stark’s epic adventure as a super hero, he soon learns who his true friends are. No matter how much they try, they cannot kill the unbearable attraction between them, so strong that nothing can stand in the way. Even his being a vampire. A monster or not, Bella doesn’t care who or what he is, and later in the series, their relationship gets tested, and grows stronger. This book is only the first of the Twilight saga, the sequel to Twilight is New Moon, the sequel to New Moon is Eclipse, and the final sequel to Eclipse will be Breaking Dawn. The series has numerous fans throughout the entire nation, maybe even the globe. Stephenie Meyer, the author of the Twilight series, is considered the “New J.K. Rowling,” according to TIME Magazine. This story has been a best-seller novel on the New York Times Best-seller list for 11 weeks. “People dream about this book,” says Kristen Stewart, who will be playing Bella Swan. The popularity of Twilight has increased tremen- dously since its first release; they are now making a movie of it. I’m not moving to South Korea,” Megan said. Megan is an army brat. She’s moved around all her life. But she draws the line at Korea. Her only alternative and her only chance to stay in the States? To live with her father’s friend, John McGowan, his wife Regina, and their seven boys: Sean, Evan, Finn, Doug, Miller, Ian, and Caleb. The last time she’d seen them, seven years ago, they were all popsicle-licking, chubby, annoying, typical little boys. Now? Evan and Finn are H-O-T. This book was very easy to connect to, since many of us do have younger or older brothers who get on our nerves every once in awhile (though I’m not sure many of us have seven)! It was also entertaining to read about the vicious, intense rivalry between Megan and Hailey, Evan’s jealous girlfriend. After all, wouldn’t you be jealous if your boyfriend was a major flirt and another girl had just moved into his house? And to make matters worse, this new girl has a major crush on him! All throughout the book, Megan keeps in close contact via email Page 17 with her best friend, Tracy, back home in Texas. In the emails, she compiles a list of observations of the McGowan boys, such as: Observation #2: Forget evil, laughing, little monsters. These guys have been touched by the Abercrombie gods. They are a blur of toned, suntanned perfection. Observation #4: Three words: six-pack abs. Observation #5: Do not even get me started on the state of the bathroom. I’m thinking of calling in a hazmat team. Seriously. And thus, “Megan Meade’s Guide to the McGowan Boys” is formed. Kate Brian is a writer of several other popular teen books, including Lucky T, Private, and Princess and the Pauper. She grew up in Bergen County and graduated from Rutgers University with a double major in English and Journalism. As with many other young adult books, there is some minor and brief language, as well as some references to sex. Megan Meade’s Guide to the McGowan Boys is an irresistible read detailing what happens when one girl and seven boys live under the same roof. Definitely a great book for any teen girl. f you like scary movies, this is a great movie to see in your spare time, especially with a group of friends at night. This movie will keep you on the edge of your seat from the suspense, and will leave you wondering what will happen next. This is a scary, suspenseful movie with a good story line. The main actresses and actors in this movie are Brittany Snow, Johnathon Schaech, Brianne Davis, Kelly Blatz, Jana Kramer. The main character, Donna, came home one day, and she walked into her brother’s room like nothing was wrong and finds her brother dead. Then Donna went to go hide and sees the killer ask her mother where she was. The killer was looking for Donna. Donna’s mother wouldn’t tell the killer where she was. Then the killer whispered “I did it for us,” and then stabbed her mother five times in the stomach. Donna witnessed her family being brutally killed. Later in the movie, Donna—still haunted and in shock about what happened to her family—gets ready for prom, thinking everything will be okay. But she was wrong. The killer has escaped from prison and tries to get to Donna during her prom night. Towards the end of the movie Donna was about to get stabbed to death by the killer but Detective Winn shoots him four times, and he dies. I recommend this movie if you enjoy scary movies. It has a good plot and story. The actors are also good. This movie kept me at the edge of my seat. WARNING: This is a PG-13 movie, make sure you ask your parents before seeing this movie. From the book: “His spine arched in shock and panic, bucking the creature on his chest, but it held on effortlessly. It reached out a blue hand. Four fingers, thought Cosmo, only four. The hand settled on his heart and sucked. Somehow the hand was pulling the pain from his body. The agony dipped, faded, and was gone. The more the creature sucked, the brighter its light became, until its blue glow morphed into sunset gold. Cosmo used the last of his energy to look down.
