Kennedy Division 4 - Huntington 2014 Fourth In Feeney Family To Lead St. Pat’s Parade Dominick P. Feeney, Jr. will be happy when the 80th Huntington St. Patrick’s Day Parade is over, he jests. His phone will ring a lot less. He and his brothers, Mike and Dave Feeney, are responsible for running the parade, as they have been for over 30 years now as members of the Ancient Order of Hibernians’ Huntington chapter, the parade’s organizer. And this year, for the parade’s 80th installment, Dominick will take on an extra responsibility – he will lead the parade as the grand marshal for the March 9 event. “It’s a family affair,” said the lifelong Huntington resident. One of a long line of St. Patrick’s Day Parade grand marshals, he will be the fourth in his family. His grandfather, a native of Ireland, was grand marshal in 1960; his father had the honor in 1979 and his uncle held the post in 1985. Walking beside Feeney Jr. as his aides will be his brothers and close friend, Suffolk County Legislator William Spencer, known to many in town simply as “Doc Spencer.” According to Feeney Jr., Spencer, an ear, nose and throat surgeon, saved his father’s life. “My father had throat cancer, and he’s the one that found it, fixed him up and cured him, which is a big deal to me,” he said. Feeney Jr. and his wife, Janice, mailed out the invitations to the parade during the last week of December and have been planning ever since. His daughters, 35-year-old twins Kristy and Kerry and 33-year-old Tara, son-in-law Mike Sileo, and granddaughters, 7-year-old Dahlia and 4-yearold Violet, have each been involved. His brothers’ children have been doing their shares as well. “I’m sure my grandfather would be proud,” Feeney Jr. said. “I’m very happy that my father and my Uncle Marty, who’s coming from Florida, are still around to be a part of it.” Formerly the superintendent of the Dix Hills Water District, Feeney Jr. took a retirement incentive in 2010 and is now a management con- sultant for the Suffolk County Water Authority and a contributor to several charities. The planning required to make the parade happen has taken up a good chunk of Feeney Jr.’s time lately. But he said that the work is worth the outcome. “It’s a feeling of accomplishment. I know a lot of people enjoy it,” he said. “If you’ve never been in the village on St. Patrick’s Day, it is a jumpin’ town... It’s like one big party.” Dominick Feeney, Sr., who was grand marshal in 1979, is happy that his son will continue the family tradition. The Huntington Ancient Order of Hibernians, an Irish-Catholic organization, started the parade 80 years ago – Dominick Feeney, Sr.’s father was president of the organization when the parade was born, and his mother was president of the ladies’ auxiliary. “It’s the greatest thing that ever happened to anybody in Huntington,” Feeney Sr. said. “It’s a great honor to have four [grand marshals] in one family.” Dominick P. Feeney, Jr., is the fourth in his family to be honored as the grand marshal of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Thank you to the Feeney family for starting the Huntington Ancient Order of Hibernians over 60 years ago. It’s been a grand ride. -Larry Judson Dominick Happy St. Patrick’s Day! You have always been able to make me proud of you. Enjoy your day and congratulations on being the Grand Marshal of the 80th St. Patrick’s Day Parade 2014. Kennedy Division 4 - Huntington 2014 Meet the Colleen: Mary Elizabeth Brady Mary Elizabeth Brady is the youngest daughter of Joan Brady & Bob Brady, Jr. Along with her siblings Jessica, Colin, Robert (RJ) and Christopher, she hails from a long line of Houlihans, Daniels, Burns, Cowies, Cliffords and McAllisters. A life-long resident of Northport, Mary is currently a senior at Northport High School where she is a member of the National Honor Society, and a Captain of the Northport Tiger Cheerleaders. Mary has been a cheerleader from the age of seven, first in the NorthportYouth Football & Cheerleading Program then in Northport Middle School and thence to Northport High where she was named a captain of the Junior Varsity squad as a sophomore. This past December, Mary was named to the Long Island Cheerleading Coaches Association (LICCA) All Star Team and also received the further distinction of the being chosen as a LICCA Ambassador Cheer Team participant. Among Mary’s many extracurricular activities is membership for the past four years in Students For 60,000, the Northport High School club that seeks to get students to share their knowledge, friendship, and compassion with those who are less fortunate, in the surrounding community and throughout the world. The club does this by raising money to fund projects both locally and internationally. In 2011 Mary was selected to travel to Nicaragua for ten days where she helped construct a school. Mary has been a four year member of the Northport Tigers Marching Band and participated in the Northport High Peer Tutoring Program for the past four years where she has assisted other students academically. She is a team captain for the Northport High School Relay For Life to support the American Cancer Society. She has participated in the American Diabetes Association Annual Awareness Walk for the past two years. Mary has also assisted in Operation Christmas Child at her home parish of St. Philip Neri in Northport and was selected as a member of the Ambassadors Club at Northport High. This past fall, Mary was honored with selection to participate in the S.H.A.R.E. Program at Northport High School. While impressive, all of the above doesn’t tell you about Mary the person. She is outgoing, generous, personable, loyal, determined and charitable to a fault. Her sense of humor is impish and legendary. A favorite of the many friends she has made, Mary is an “organizer” whether it be for the next fund raising activity or a gathering at some bodies’ home. You can count on Mary to step up and take charge. We’d like to be able to relate to you what Mary does in her free time. The fact is she doesn’t have a lot of free time due to her school work (several AP and IB courses), many activities and working two days per week at a local restaurant. As she prepares for life after high school, Mary is in the process of deciding where she will continue her studies this coming fall. She has been accepted to several colleges and universities and is waiting for the rest of her applications to be acted upon before deciding whether to become a Seminole, Nittany Lion, Tiger, Terrapin, Husky, Laker, Minutewoman or Crusader. Whatever her decision, you can count on Mary to continue to work hard, work smart and have fun. Mary Elizabeth Brady Happy St. Patrick’s Day SPresident EAN M. Kennedy Division 4 - Huntington 2014 Meet The Colleen: Cassidy Catherine Brown Cassidy Catherine Brown is the daughter of Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 4 member Timothy Brown and his wife, Patricia Brown. Her older sister, Brianna Rose, was a Colleen in the 2008 Huntington St. Patrick’s Parade. Cassidy is the granddaughter of late Supreme Court Justice Harry Richard Brown, who was also an active member and former president of AOH Division 4. Her maternal great-grandfather, James F. Donohue, came to the United States from County Cork, Ireland and belonged to the Irish American Social Club which, in turn, founded the Huntington St. Patrick’s Parade. Cassidy is currently a senior at Northport High School, where she is an outstanding student. Her dedication to academics led her to become an International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma candidate, vice president of the Academy of Finance program and member of both the Business and World Language Honor Societies. Cassidy was selected by her teachers and the director of the Academy of Finance program to interview for an internship with KPMG, a big four accounting firm. Her resume and outstanding qualities landed her not only the internship with KPMG but also the Molloy and Mercy College Business boot camps, all of which she participated in this past summer. Cassidy plans on following her passion for finance and hopes to attend the University of Pennsylvania or New York University in the fall. On top of her passion for business, Cassidy has always demonstrated a love for animals. She is a warm and generous person who enjoys giving back to others. She has demonstrated this passion by volunteering at Little Shelter Animal Rescue and through peer tutoring. Cassidy derives the greatest amount of happiness through knowing she has made somebody’s life better or easier. Ever since she was little, she would always help out in the first-aid room of Windham Mountain, where her family has been actively involved in ski patrol for almost 30 years. Instead of skiing, Cassidy would rather spend her time replacing paper sheets on gurneys and handing out ice to injured people. Cassidy enjoys making others smile, especially with her witty Irish sense of humor. Cassidy is a gracious and beautiful young girl, with loads of passion and dedication. She is sure to have a successful future and make her family extremely proud. Congratulations Cassidy You will always be our “Wee Colleen” All our love, xxooo’s Mom, Dad, and Brianna, Aunt Barbara, Uncle Stephen, Uncle Thomas, Uncle Keith and all your cousins, Heather, Colleen, Cody, Jesse, Callye, Daniel, Nadjita, Juliette, Tristan, Aidan, Hunter and Sean. PATRICK’S DAY SPECIAL TO & THE RECORD 25 SPONSORED BY St. Patrick’s Parade 2014 The Ancient Order of Hibernians John F. Kennedy Division 4 - Huntington St. Patrick’s Parade in Huntington - A Grand Tradition For 80 Years O n the second Sunday of March, tens of thousands of Huntington residents gather to celebrate the unofficial start of spring at the Huntington St. Patrick’s Day Parade, sponsored and organized by the Ancient Order of Hibernians John F. Kennedy Division # 4. The Feeney Family will be cheering on the Grand Marshal, with his granddaughters Dahlia and Violet riding along as “Wee Colleens.” Dominic’s wife Janice will view the parade from the Reviewing Stand along with daughters Kristy, Kerry, and Tara, and son-in-law Michael. This year, the 80th edition of the parade, will be no different. On Sunday, March 9 beginning at 2 p.m. in Huntington village, Dominick Feeney, Jr., of Huntington, a retired Town of Huntington employee and longtime member of the A.O.H, leads the St. Patrick’s Day Parade as the Grand Marshal. Dominic, Jr. will be accompanied by his Parade Aides, Dr. William Spencer, Michael Feeney, David Feeney, Dominic Feeney, Sr., Martin Feeney, Jr. and Paul Costello. They will lead one of the largest St. Patrick’s parades in Huntington history with fifteen pipe bands and five marching bands. or 80 years the St. Patrick’s Day Parade has been a wonderful family community event going all the way back to before the Depression when Finnegan’s was the gathering spot for the Irish workers. This Sunday spectators will have dozens of great pubs and restaurants in a vibrant Huntington village to choose from to enjoy the parade that would have been hard to imagine back in the 1930s. The parade is not only a great community event, but according to Chamber of Commerce Co-chairman Bob Bontempi, it’s also a tremendous catalyst to the local Huntington economy, with spectators packing the local restaurants, shops, and pubs. With the current rough economic times and the brutal winter weather, “buying local” not only feels good, it helps all of us. Dominic is the fourth member of the Feeney Family to lead the Parade in Huntington. His grandfather, Martin Feeney who died in 1973 was Grand Marshal in 1960 followed by Dominic’s uncle, Martin Feeney who led the Parade in 1985. Dominic Feeney, Sr. wore the Grand Marshal’s sash in 1979. The Feeney Family has been active in the Huntington Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians for four generations. 26 SPECIAL TO F The core of the parade is, of course, the bagpipe bands, and no parade on Long Island can match Huntington’s lineup of bands from all over the Island. Returning are the highly sought after NYPD Emerald Society Pipe & Drum Band, the Nassau County Police Emerald Society Pipe & THE RECORD Band, the IBEW Local # 25 Pipe & Drum Band among many others. The Northport Pipe and Drum Band, the home band of the Huntington Ancient Order of Hibernians, will continue its long association with the parade. The St. Anthony’s High School Pipe and Drum Band, representing the next generation of bagpipers, returns after its debut last year. Of course, the Huntington High School Blue Devil Marching Band will be there along with the Walt Whitman Wildcat Band, Irish step dancers, antique cars, and numerous veteran, civic and youth groups. This year also marks the return to the parade of the Northport High School Tiger Marching Band which is the largest high school marching band in New York State. The Huntington Ancient Order of Hibernians will once again, as is their custom, march dressed in their gray morning suit tuxedos. “We take a great deal of pride in putting on the parade,” said AOH President Andrew X. Brady. “We work hard to make sure the St. Patrick’s Day Parade is a wonderful Huntington community event.” P resident Brady, who is also the parade’s journal chairman, added, “Many residents mistakenly think the Town of Huntington sponsors the parade each year. This is not the case. It’s actually the Huntington Hibernians who organize, promote, run and raise the money needed to pay for all the expenses associated with putting on this spectacular parade. Each year, the Hibernians go door to door soliciting donations from local businesses for advertisements which appear in this special St. Patrick’s Day Parade edition of The Long Islander and The Record newspapers. It is these generous ad sponsors that enable us to run the parade, so we hope folks support their businesses.” A lthough the AOH runs and finances the parade, Huntington town officials have always been very supportive of the AOH, said AOH Vice President Greg Kennedy. He added, “We have been very fortunate that each year almost all our local officials join us at our annual Grand Marshal’s Ball to kick off the parade weekend.” The ball – one of the major social events of the year featuring bagpipers, step dancers, a live band and plenty of dancing – kicks off at 6:30 p.m. at the Huntington Crescent Club on Friday, March 7. The Parade honors St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, who converted the pagan Celts to Christianity around the year 430 A.D. St. Patrick founded the cathedral church of Armagh and it soon became the center of the Catholic Church’s activities in Ireland. During his three decades in Ireland, he raised the standards of scholarship, encouraged the study of Latin and brought Ireland into closer relations with the rest of the Western Church until his death on March 17, in 461 A.D. T he Ancient Order of Hibernians in America is a national Irish-American Catholic organization that was founded in New York City in 1836 and whose roots can be traced back to Ireland. The AOH is dedicated to preserving Irish heritage. Their motto is “Friendship, Unity and Christian Charity,” and a large portion of their efforts are devoted to charitable works. In the past few years, the Huntington AOH has raised tens of thousands of dollars for various charitable organizations including being one of the leading donors to the town’s eight local parish food pantries. If you, or anyone you know, are interested in joining the Ancient Order of Hibernians, please have them call 631-261-8293. Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month at the VFW/AOH Hall at 210 West Pulaski Road at 7:30 p.m. The next meeting is Wednesday, April 9. The parade will kick off just north of the Huntington Train Station along New York Avenue before turning west onto Main Street and ending at St. Patrick’s School. It begins promptly at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 10. But get to town before 1 p.m. when they start closing the roads and good viewing spots are gone. Kennedy Division 4 - Huntington 2014 Walk With The Irish Our Annual Pub Crawl A.O.H. members outside a Huntington supermarket soliciting donations for area food banks. Hibernians Help Stock Area Food Pantries Although the Huntington Hibernians’ focus this Sunday will be on the parade and celebrating Irish culture, the organization is also keenly aware of another piece of Irish history. The history of the Irish is not one of all harmony, peace and celebration. In most cases, the daily life for the Irish, in this country and in Ireland, was one of struggle and hardship. Through the many years of the Irish famine, “Great Hunger” and their never-ending fight for freedom and human rights, the Irish became even more committed to their families, friends and improving the quality of life in their communities. Past President Jack Ryan, AOH Charities & Missions Chairman, stated that each year Division 4 is a leading contributor to the area's eight local parish food pantries and when the call came in asking for Thanksgiving help, the Division as usual responded. "The Division has a long history of helping our local parish food pantries. Back in the 90s, most of the work was done by a late brother, Jim Regan," Past President Ryan mentioned. "When Jim passed away a few years ago, the Division decided to memorialize his work by formally creating the Jim Regan Memorial Food Drive, not only continuing his work but greatly expanding it." True to the mission of Friendship, Unity and Christian Charity, the Hibernian members enjoy working together reaching out to their neighbors to help the less fortunate. In keeping with our motto of “Friendship, Unity and Christian Charity,” we gather together for an annual pub crawl to raise donations for charity. Our group follows bag pipers through Huntington to visit our sponsors and enjoy an afternoon with good friends. Watch for news of the 2014 pub crawl at www.huntingtonhibernians.com.
