Technical Support
All customers with IGEL thin clients have free access to technical support from centers in Europe, the United States and Asia.
In addition, you receive free updates to the IGEL Universal Management Suite as long as your devices support the latest UMS
client. We maintain our firmware images for up to 3 years after a
model reaches end of life, giving an exceptionally long service life.
IGEL Universal Desktops offer extremely low running costs and
are always kept up to date with the latest technology for delivering
your server-based applications.
Reliability Built to Order
IGEL Technology holds no stock in its channel. Instead, when
you order IGEL thin clients, we assemble and flash the units at
our warehouse facilities in Europe, North America and Asia. This
means your devices undergo final flashing and testing the day
they are sent to you, ensuring you get the latest firmware and
best “out of the box” experience.

An Introduction to Thin Clients
Thin clients are the modern form of Personal Computers and Terminals. They provide access to applications running
elsewhere on a network and have a keyboard, mouse and user experience just like a PC. Thin clients can be used for
a wide variety of tasks including word processing, email, data processing, voice and multi-media. They are available
as desktop, mobile and all-in-one LCD integrated devices.
Unlike a PC, thin clients do not run applications and store no data; they simply collect key strokes, mouse clicks or
audio/video input from the user and display the application interface.
Thin clients have major advantages over PCs and Terminals:
a
a

a
a
a
a
a
Since applications are deployed centrally on a server, the whole IT infrastructure becomes far easier and less time
consuming to manage.
There is far less to manage or misconfigure on a thin client and their remote management software dramatically
reduces IT support desktop visits.
The total cost of desktop ownership is dramatically lower and IT budgets can typically be reduced by 25 % or
more since less “fire fighting” is needed.
Data is far more secure since it is centralized and backed-up, thus offering compliance with many data protection regulations.
No moving parts and no local hard disk make thin clients resistant to viruses and very reliable. The average lifetime
of a thin client can be up to eight years with dramatic return of investment (ROI).
Organizational and IT change becomes much easier due to the speed and ease of rollout and deployment.
Thin clients use much less energy than PCs and can cut CO2 emissions by up to 77 %, even if the additional server
capacity and data center cooling is considered (Fraunhofer research paper). In some cases, energy savings can
become an important ROI driver.
Modern Requirements of Thin Clients
Traditionally, thin clients have been used to connect to
server-based Windows® applications running on Citrix® or
Microsoft® using an architecture called Terminal Services.
The server acted as an enormous “PC mainframe” that
could share applications with many users concurrently.
Today, there are far more ways to deliver applications
than Terminal Services. A modern thin client should be
able to deliver any server-based application, from old to
new, and could include applications based on:
a
a
a
Mainframe
Blade PCs
Virtual PCs (VDI)
a
a
a
Web, Java
Voice over IP
Multi-media
This ability to access any network application, regardless of how it is delivered, is at the core of our design
philosophy and is why we call our range of thin clients the IGEL Universal Desktop series.

Thin client computing with virtual desktops –
both standardized and flexible at the same time!
Thin client computing with IGEL Universal Desktops and
virtual desktop infrastructures (VDI) is an unbeatable
combination; it’s flexible and efficient as well as secure
and economical. You can have the right desktops available for your users at any location. What’s more, you can
do all this without having to sacrifice the convenience
and security of a centralized computing environment. VDI
allows you to standardize your desktops with commonly used desktop pools or by desktop cloning. Beyond
this, you can even provide high-performance workstations for knowledge workers or power users, such as
those for use in R&D or in graphic, web and product
design – including CAD applications, image editing and
graphic-design layouts. In view of these new and powerful options, the IT-sector analysts at Gartner predict that
the market share of virtual hosted desktops will grow to
40 % by 2013.
6
IGEL’s VDI Strategy: more freedom to configure things exactly the way you want them
IGEL Universal Desktop thin clients closely follow the
roadmaps established by leading providers of virtualization technology, such as VMware®, Citrix® and Microsoft®. Our core competency is provisioning these solutions in an economical and flexible manner that is both
easily managed and secure. IGEL thin clients support
numerous connection brokers such as VMware View™,
Citrix XenDesktop™ as well as hypervisor-independent
solutions like Leostream®, Quest Software® vWorkspace
and Ericom® PowerTerm WebConnect, which are compatible with all commonly used hypervisors, including
Citrix XenServer™, Microsoft® Hyper-V™ and VMware
ESX Server™. IGEL supports VDI in all three thin client
operating systems: IGEL Linux, Microsoft® Windows®
Embedded Standard and Microsoft® Windows® CE.
The Portfolio: IGEL Technology’s thin client hardware and software. Many functions – One device!
Industry leading hardware and software
IGEL has a broad range of models for use in
accessing VDI environments, including standard desktop thin clients and integrated LCD
units, as well as software for converting standard PCs into thin clients. The powerful hardware
featured in the IGEL Universal Desktop model
series allows you to deploy virtual desktops in all
areas of your business enterprise. Rich multi-media: IGEL
Universal Desktops support multi-media acceleration for VMware
View™ and PCoIP as well as Citrix HDX™. Local decoding and integrated codecs help to relieve the workload on central IT resources
and the system network. For the greatest user convenience and
easiest operation, IGEL thin clients also offer the respective appliance modes supporting various VDI solutions, giving users a full
PC-like experience. A well-designed, future-ready investment: In
addition to being certified by VMware® and Citrix®, IGEL Universal Desktops also feature extra RAM and flash memory.
The best user
experience in all VDI
environments
IGEL thin clients in the Universal Desktop model series bring the
latest improvements in leading VDI solutions directly to users, with
no compromises. Everything that you need for perfect VDI access
is already integrated and ready to go! With the compatible firmware
package from IGEL, you will need no additional software. Especially in VMware®- and Citrix®-based environments, you will enjoy
maximum performance when it comes to speed, USB peripherals, multi-media and audio. Furthermore, IGEL’s firmware packages offer additional helpful software features, such as SPICE and
NoMachine NX (for Linux-based VDI), a web browser with a Java

Operating Systems
The IGEL Universal Desktop series are available with three different operating systems.
Microsoft® Windows® Embedded CE
Microsoft®
TM
Windows
Embedded CE
uses the familiar desktop interface without the high cost of a Windows® Embedded Standard operating system. Due to the fact that no local applications or drivers can be added
by the user, the system offers high security and stability. The footprint of the Windows® CE
operating system is the smallest of any Windows® embedded operating system.
Microsoft® Windows® Embedded Standard
14
Microsoft®
TM
Windows
Embedded Standard
delivers the power of Microsoft® Windows® XP in a thin client, with 32-bit Windows® compatibility for local applications and drivers. With a full-featured local Internet Explorer (Standard/Advanced) and Media Player (Advanced), users have all the required capabilities and
maximum flexibility.
IGEL Linux
is the most cost effective operating system with the best performance. IGEL Linux comes
with a broad set of software clients, tools and protocols giving the user the possibility to
access the required application with the best protocol. IGEL’s embedded Linux operating
system offers maximum stability and security. Having a strong in-house development team,
IGEL customers can be sure they always have the latest updates and features integrated,
in a rock-solid firmware.
Feature Packs
Only pay for what you need. We have grouped our software features into three “Packs”. Simply select the Pack that
meets your needs (For example: IGEL UD3-130 LX = IGEL UD3 with Feature Pack Entry and Linux OS).
Entry
This Feature Pack is designed for customers wanting to access just server-based Windows® applications using the Citrix® ICA or Microsoft® RDP protocols. The IGEL Linux and
Microsoft® Windows® Embedded Standard versions also have a Java SE Runtime Environment.
Standard
This Feature Pack has all the features of the Entry Pack plus virtualization support, local web
browser, PDF Reader, and terminal emulation. It also supports remote access using a variety of VPN protocols and the ThinPrint client for enhanced network printing.
Advanced
This Feature Pack is an extremely powerful collection of features that can connect you
to almost any application, media or peripheral. In addition to the Standard Pack it offers
extended multi-media capabilities like multi-media redirection, Citrix HDX, a local Media
Player and Flash. Additionally it supports more specialized features such as VoIP, a native
SAP GUI, NoMachine NX and ThinLinc printing. For advanced peripheral support, the
Advanced Pack also supports USB re-direction so USB devices can connect seamlessly to
the server-based Windows desktop.

Protect your Network and Data with Bullet Proof Security
IGEL Universal Desktops go way beyond the inherent security advantages of thin clients. All our devices support
smartcard readers and some models can have these as an internal option. This allows two factor authentication during log-in and also productivity enhancements such as smooth roaming between shared desktops. We also work
with other security devices such as USB tokens. To protect data, all IGEL Universal Desktops can have their USB
ports disabled or made read-only using our Universal Management Suite.

Certifications for IGEL Thin Clients
IGEL series UD2 LX/ES, and UD3 LX/ES have been accredited the Energy Star 5.0 certificate by the
Energy Protection Agency (EPA). Only the top 25 % of the market fulfill the criteria, ensuring the energy
consumption is in accordance with the Energy Star 5.0 specifications. These specifications include: less
than 15 Watt in idle mode and less than 2.7 Watt in Standby/sleep mode and Wake on LAN functionality. Also, power management is included in IGEL firmware for operating systems Windows® Embedded
Standard and Linux.
The UL / CUL mark of conformity is the most accepted proof that a product complies with the American and Canadian safety requirements. This represents the most recognized symbol for product safety.
IGEL thin clients with the TÜV/GS mark of conformity are checked with regard to the safety-related
requirements of the low-voltage guideline of RWTÜV. In addition, the GS mark of conformity certifies the
high ergonomic requirements of all IGEL thin client products.
26
The “CE mark of conformity” stands for “Communauté Européenne” (European Community). IGEL Technology guarantees that the production of the IGEL thin clients complies with the “EMC” (electromagnetic
compatibility) guidelines and that the low-voltage guideline applies to equipment safety. Within the framework of EMC testing, the CE mark guarantees that our products do not generate any electromagnetic
interference and are adequately protected against external cross interference.
The FCC mark of conformity confirms that an electronic device has been tested by the Federal Communications commission (USA) for compliance with admissible high frequencies. This mark is mandatory
for electronic products that are sold in the USA. This affects all devices that are equipped with a microprocessor. Frequencies that are not shielded by means of an appropriate casing or other measures may
cause faults in other equipment. There are two categories of FCC mark:
• Class A: For equipment that will be used exclusively in an industrial and commercial environment.
• Class B: For equipment that will also be used in residential areas.
DE 79295479
According to this EU regulation, the “Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment” (WEEE) directive,
the manufacturers are responsible for the redemption and disposal of their old equipment. As one of the
first manufacturers IGEL offered immediate, cost-free (member states of the European Union only), and
easy redemption service for thin clients purchased after 8/15/2005. With this, IGEL complies with the EU
law for the disposal of old electronic equipment.
The RoHS directive (Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances) requires companies to forgo the use of heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium and brominated flame retardants
in the production of electronic or electric equipment. Every IGEL thin client in the UD2, UD3, UD5 and
UD9 series is being produced according to the RoHS European Union directive.
The European Union Regulation REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of Chemicals) shall improve the protection of human health and the environment from the risks that can be posed
by chemicals. IGEL fulfils this regulation by informing customers and partners about materials on the
Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) in our products in a concentration above
0.1 % weight by weight (w/w).
IGEL Universal Desktops – The Green
Alternative
For organizations looking to reduce their carbon footprint, electronic waste and energy bills, thin clients have strong
credentials when compared with PCs.
The prestigious Fraunhofer Institute in Germany found that, even when the additional server electricity and data center air conditioning is factored in, thin clients can cut CO2 emissions by up to 77 % compared with an average desktop
PC when using 64 bit Windows® Terminal Services (Citrix®) for server-based desktop hosting. These energy savings
can offer a six year payback or less on electrical energy costs alone (US Department of Energy commercial electricity
costs per KWh 2009 in the NE United States).
In addition to reducing CO2 and energy, thin clients generate 66 % less electrical waste. We were one of the first thin
client vendors world wide to ensure all our devices were WEEE and RoHS compliant. Every device bought in Europe
can be recycled free of charge at end of life upon customer request.
